The Afar of JyoutnfK I Beaverhead. Countu High School. rDsf onj flosttona. School C. E. Naugle, Principal; Ted Hazelbaker, Elmer Petersen, Mrs. Orville Sparrow, Lester Jones, W. E. Monger, Chairman, and Mrs. Theo Bay. NOT PICTURED: Hiram Lapham. The school board consists of citizens of Beaverhead County who are willing to donate their time for the welfare of BCHS. On the second Monday of each month they meet to discuss the many problems which are important to all of us. The school board members receive no pay for their work, but they have the satisfaction of knowing that students of BCHS are attending school in an up-to-date educational system. 2 Rueben Waters You to the left and I to the right, For the ways of men must sever - And it well may be for a day and a night, And it well may be forever. But whether we meet or whether we part (For our ways are past our knowing), A pledge from the heart to its fellow heart On the ways we all are going. Richard Hovey P viec A ncC We, the seniors of 1958, take great pride in presenting this yearbook to you. Recorded in it are photo- graphs of your fellow students, friends, teachers, and many memorable occasions. It is our wish that you will enjoy this yearbook as much as we of the staff have enjoyed editing it. We hope that as you look through this yearbook you will recall the many assemblies, games, class yells, initiations, and dances. Although this book contains only a few of the activities that were held at BCHS, let us hope that as you glance through this book it will bring back many pleasant memories of your high school days at BCHS. eaveftAecuC ountef SeAooC SCHOOL BOARD........................................2 FACULTY.............................................5 SENIORS............................................11 JUNIORS............................................23 SOPHOMORES.........................................29 FRESHMEN................'..........................33 ACTIVITIES.........................................37 MUSIC..............................................61 SPORTS.............................................67 DANCES AND SNAPS...................................81 4 To the Class of 1958: Graduating classes are usually sent packing with lectures and messages filled with admonitions for the future. This has merit. However, too infrequently are you, as a class, admonished to ’’look back. Your class has many distinguishing features about it. For example, you are the class of the I. G. Y. Ten, twenty, or thirty years from now, what significance will the International Geophysical Year have? You are also the class of Dillon's first paving. Can you remember the before and after” aspects of the school in regard to the paving? Sputnik, Vanguard, and real, honest-to-goodness space travel shared the year with the Class of 1958. The year you graduated, the chemise made a return appearance after an absence of nearly 30 years and women's shoes looked like something resurrected from the attic. Big league baseball moved to the west coast (Brooklyn lost its beloved Bums ) and the Winter Olympics were scheduled to be held in a re- mote California valley. The Ford Motor Company introduced a new car--the Edsel--during your last school year. American education was being subjected to a critical examination the year you graduated. What type high school will your children attend? What subjects will they take? How critical will you be as a parent? On the state level, your class saw students of Montana State University burn their president in effigy in one year and stage a protest strike in support of him the next year. The Class of 1958 moves out into the world in a time of bewildering confusion, a world at once exciting and promising as well as forbid- ding and challenging. We know you will give a good account of yourselves. Keep us in mind as you glance through this annual in the years to come. Reflect a little on what WAS taking place and what IS taking place. Are you satisfied with your contribution to the world you live in? Good Luck! C. E. Naugle, Principal Beaverhead County H.S. 6 pexu 'pax puCe cutei .ccC We appreciate our custodians for several reasons. They keep our building in A-one order and they are courteous and pleasant at all times. George (Red) Pettit and Jules Wenger are indispensable to all of us. Fern Fox, secretary to our Principal, Mr. Naugle, has the big responsibility of keeping the books for all clubs and organizations and issuing excuse slips to the students in addition to numerous other duties. We appreciate Fern’s patience under the constant hubub of school. Dan Scott, Larry Lloyd, and Marvin Lundburg. 7 ?acu£tef KATHRYN ARBUCKLE Shorthand, Bookkeeping, Typing. September 7, 1954, the day and the time we were looking forward to and yet almost afraid to have arrive. Initia- tions were fun. We looked at our classmates as we assembled in our costumes of barrels, sack cloth, hula skirts, and other modes of dress and enjoyed a good laugh. It didn't take us long to organize with Bob D'Evelyn at the helm with Donna Lee Given as Vice President; Mary Garrison, Secretary; and Gary Swartz, Treasurer. Shirley Cote qualified for yell leader and Charles Tolson represented us on the Student Council. Bette Mockel and Bruce Thomas became Red Cross representatives. We had our ups and downs but all in all we did quite well. Bob D'Evelyn and Bob Wallace began their athletic careers in football. Mary Garrison was named candidate for Harvest Ball Queen. Mrs. McCollum and Mr. Scott were our class sponsors. Our sophomore year Bob D'Evelyn was again chosen as President with Sonja Holland as Vice President, Bette Mockel as Secretary and Walton Peterson as Treasurer. Fred Backus was our yell leader and Mary Garrison and Bruce Thomas represented us on the Student Council. Bette Mockel and Dan Rebish were on the Red Cross Council Don Puyear was elected to serve on the Beaver Lodge Committee. Some of us tried our luck in dramatics, some ir Music and some of the boys really made our athletic contribution to the school show outstanding progress. Sonja Holland was Harvest Ball Queen candidate. The three members who made Honor Society were Sonja Holland, June Packer, and Gayle Wheat. Miss Nelson and Miss Christy sponsored us through our sophomore year. Our junior year began with Gayle Wheat as President; June Packer, Vice President; Vida Flander, Secretary; and Roy Cor- nell as Treasurer. Mary Garrison was our yell leader, with Bill Petersen and Mary Kay Straugh as members of the Red Cross Council. Our Student Council representatives were Mary Garrison, Dick Newton, Bill Petersen and Sonja Holland. Bette Mockel was Harvest Ball Queen candidate. Mary Garrison, Bette Mockel and Vida Flanders were initiated into Honor Society. Gayle Wheat and Vida Flanders were elected by the girls of the junior class to attend Girls State held at Montana State College in Bozeman. The boys chosen to attend Boys State were Ricky Riebhoff, Bob D'Evelyn, Roy Cornell, Dick Newton, Steve Andrews, and Bill Petersen. One of the outstanding events in our Junior year was the Junior Prom and the Junior Senior Banquet held at the Elks Lodge prior to the Prom. Miss Mc- Quillan, Mr. Scott and Mr. McDonald were our class sponsors. Seniors at last! We've had such fun looking forward to the year we would reign supreme. We chose as our senior officers: Bob D'Evelyn, President; Mary Garrison, Vice President; Gayle Wheat, Secretary-Treasurer; and Fred Backus, yell leader. Marilyn Bogut and Bruce Thomas served on the Red Cross council. Bob D'Evelyn served as President of the Student Council; Ricky Riebhoff, Vice President; Roy Cornell, Treasurer; and Gayle Wheat. Sec- retary; Bob Wallace, Representative. The seniors entered Gayle Wheat as their candidate for Harvest Ball Queen. Dave Ferris, junior class president, crowned June Packer,Queen of the Prom, with Mary Garrison and Mary Kay Straugh as attendents. Senior Sneak Day was a red letter day for all seniors. We made the trip to Elkhorn by bus - did lots of swimming • had loads of food and Oh what delicious chicken. Those who didn't plan on swimming were promptly tossed in - clothes and all. Then remember our ride home - the bus just gave up - so we hiked those last few weary miles. Then May 28th arrived, we were really not as happy about leaving as we had thought we would be. It gives one a nostalgic feeling - saying good-bye to four of the most precious years of our lives. Mr. Bierrum and Mr. Curran were the sponsors who guided us through 1957-58. 20 SEA VER HEAD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL CHU.ON. MONTANA Gommerxcemerit W.dn.ldoy Etoning. May . I9M Gght oClock H . Christmas is a special time of giving, and in this spirit the Spanish Club worked a week before Christmas with paper, boxes, glue, wire, and scis- sors to make a pinata for the children's party at the Soroptomist's Home in Butte. They filled this large decorated bell shaped pinata with over a hundred presents and many pounds of candy, nuts, and pop- corn. One of the children with his eyes closed, tries to break the pinata with a stick. If he can’t breat it, the stick goes to another child. Finally one of the children broke the bell, the contents fell to the floor; and the happy little ones picked up the goodies. 49 Miss Moran Dick Newton Sponsor President ROW 1: Miss Moran, Dana Andreasen, Roy Cornell, Dick Newton, Roy Newton, Tym Stocks, Ricky Rieb- hoff, and Mary Kay Straugh. The Bop Kats from Rigby, Idaho furnished the music. The Club 58 theme was carried out by the use of a sidewalk cafe with tables and chairs encircled by a white picket fence. Powder blue and midnight black gave a night club atmospheric effect. One of the highlights of the evening was the crowning of June Packer, the Junior Prom Queen, by Dave Ferris, the president of the Junior class. Mary Garrison and Mary Kay Straugh were the attendants of the Queen. The entertainment was furnished by several choral groups.
