“
Foreword We, the Seniors of 1955, take great pride in presenting this annual to the students of Beaver- head County High School; for recorded here on these pages are the memories of the fun and good times we have had together. We sincerely hope that it willtake its place among your most cherished possessions, so that in future years you may glance through its pages with fond remem- brance. If learning were all we gained here at Beaver- head County High, it would make the years spent here worthwhile, but the obtaining of knowledge was only one phase of our varied and full high school life. We also treasure the hours of companionship with our friends and the warm understanding and tireless efforts of our teachers. Equally precious are the experiences we shared in learning to live and work together in the classrooms and various organizations. We shall never forget the rousing assemblies. the class yells and cheerleaders, the band and chorus activities, the class meetings and plays, and the many dances and games. There are also the memories of athletic fame, noisy study halls, and the numerous romances which have come and gone through the years. Nothing can ever dim the pride we have inour school. Beaverhead County High has always had outstanding work in music, athletics, journalism, and dramatics. In this annual we have tried to show a small part of our extra-curricular ac- tivities, class histories, and various organiza- tions. Although we may not be well remembered as the years pass by at Beaverhead County High, we will never forget our days here. May this book, which binds us all together, show to us and our school mates the true spirit of Beaver- head County High School. 2 Contents Adminstration Seniors Underclassmen Sports Music Activities Snaps Advertisements School Board Mrs. Harry Anderson Mrs. W. Each year our greatest hope is to have a winning football team. Naturally, this is not always possible; however, 1954 has been a lucky year. Spurred by the enthusiastic yells of fans, the Beavers fought their way, undefeated, to victory as Montana Southwestern Division Champions, Class B. With a feeling of deep pride and ap- preciation, we hereby dedicate this 1955 Annual to our championship team, the Bea- vers. A winning team is not only made of play- ers, but it is also built on the hard work and patience of a wonderful coach. Our team has such a coach in Ben Tyvand. It is our heartfelt wish, therefore, to dedicate this Annual to a man we will al- ways remember. It is difficult for a new prin- cipal togetto know all of his students in a short time. You have made it a relatively easy task by your fine personalities. As leaders of the stu- dent body, you have made my first year a pleasant one. Your pleasant attitude and scholastic tendencies have been an excellent example for the entire school. vVe feel that BCHS has done its part in preparing you for the world ahead. We hope we have given you the 3 R's” in their entirety, and, in addition, have taught you how to get along with society. Your parents and other taxpayers of this county have financed your education. You are now on your own to face the rigors of the world. We trust that you have the necessary educational equipment. I would per sonally like to wish each one of you the best of luckinyour ventures. Please feel that BCHS is still yours and rest assured that you are always welcome to come back and see us. Your high school will con- tinue to assit you in your chosen walks of life. We Seniors of 1955 would like to express here the gratitude of ourselves and the entire school for the work done by Jules Wenger, ’Red Petitt, and Mrs. Fox. It is through their constant efforts that the school runs smoothly and steadily, for their jobs play very necessary parts in the lives of all of us. These persons have displayed co-operation and willingness in doing their many and varied duties. At all times they have shown good-natured friend- liness toward us. Thus, in these few lines, we take the opportunity of saying, Thanks for the jobs well-done . 10 Seniors Reading left to right: 1st. Row: M. Sorenson, M. McLaughlin, J. McMannis, A. Klang, B. Lohr, S. It goes without saying how proud we are of them. 25 Senior Class History Can anyone forget September 4.1951, the Date when seventy-three somewhat scared but eager Freshmen enter- ed the hallsof Beaverhead County High School? It seems as though ourbest friends at the time were our protectors, the Juniors. Every corner seemed to have a thousand hidden Sophomores and Seniors waiting to initiate us. Friday of the first week, the official end of initiation came with an assembly and parade in which we were the chief actors and actresses. That night the Sophomore class honored us at a mixer held in the Beaver Lodge. As Freshmen, we gave a return dance for the Sophomores on September 21st and sponsored another dance on October 19th. Our firstyear’s officerswere Pete Hilger, President; Marvin Miller, Vice-President; Elizabeth Me Fadden, Sec- retary; Duane Simon, Treasurer; and Jack Zinc, Yell Leader. Don Murray was Student Council representative, and Carol Mockel and Donna Krause were elected to Beaver Lodge Committee. The class sponsors were Mr. Patterson, Mr. Scott, and Mrs. McCollum. Our class has always been an active one. It had its share of scholars also; over one-third of the class was on the honor roll that year! The class elected Sharon Lindley to be our Harvest Queen candidate. September2,1952 began our Sophomore year. This time we were on the other end of initiation, and how good it felt. That week we officially welcomed the Freshmen to school with a mixer. We were able to walk down the halls with perhaps a braver and more confident stride, and in our first class meeting we elected Don Murray as President, Sharon Lindley, Vice-President; Donna Krause, Secretary; Carol Mockel, Treasurer; and Rochelle Kofoed, Yell Leader. Student Council representatives were Pete Hilger and Dixie South. Beaver Lodge members -- Doris Stefantz and Mary Harrington. During the year we lost several members; however, we gained an equal amount which balanced the count. Again, the class was active. We had members in almost every club. John Nelson, Don Westad, Pete Hilger, Marvin Miller, and Jack Zinc were initiated into the B Club. Joyce Sneed became a cheerleader and our Harvest Queen candidate was Sharon Stanchfield. The class was honored when Elva Owen and Elizabeth Mc- Fadden were elected to the National Honor Society. Yes, 1952 was quite a year for the class! 1953 held a thrill for us. For the first time in our high school career, we were upperclassmen. The year’s officers were Sharon Stanchfield, President; Donna Krause, Vice-president; John Nelson, Secretary; Elve Owen, Treasurer; and Dixie South, Yell Leader. Dan Pendergast and Pete Hilger were elected to Student Council and Joanne Clark and Bob Loveridge to the Beaver Lodge Committee. Oir biggest undertaking was the Junior Prom of which the theme was Showboat. It was hard work but quite a thrill when done. Another not-so-small project was the Junior Class play, Uncertain Wings. The year saw Sharon Stanchfield and Don Murray elected to National Honor Society; and Bob Schiopen, Don Murray, and Dan Pendergast were initiated into B Club. Boys' State finally rolled around. Those attending: Bob Loveridge, John Wilke, Dan Pendergast, Pete Hilger, Don Donovan, Bob Schiopen, John Nelson, and Don Mur- ray. Elve Owen and Carolyn Fry represented BCHS at Girls' State. Alternates were Elizabeth Orr and Carol Mockel. Mary Harrington received instruction at Publications Pow Wow at the University of Montana. And so -- another year at BCHS passed. 1954, the long-awaited year! It seems like yesterday that we were Freshmen bowing to Seniors; here we are at last -- Seniors ourselves. Senior Class officers were George Slanger, President; Bob Schiopen, Vice-president; Barbara King, Secretary; Dan Pendergast, Treasurer; and Yvonne Smith, Yell Leader. Dixie South, Don Murray, Pete Hilger, and Marvin Miller were elected to Student Council. Bob Loveridge served as Student Body President, George Slanger, Vice- president; Elve Owen, Secretary; and Dan Pendergast, Business Manager. Yvonne Smith and Sharon Stanchfield, Editor and Assistant Editor respectively, took over the tremendous duties of the Beaver. Barbara King, as Editor, and Carol Mockel, as Assistant Editor were chosen to edit our biggest Senior Project -- the yearbook. The Harvest Queen candidate this year was Dixie South. We have had the honor of having the Queen award given to our candidate for the past three years. As the date of commencement approaches and our final year draws to a close, we want to thank all those who have helped us toward this goal. We hope that our days at BCHS will not soon be forgotten, and that we have in some way left a little bit of ourselves to help you remember. Our four years of high school have been both fun and hard work, and it is our sincere desire that those following may have an equal share of success! 26 Underclassmen Juniors Class History On September 2, 1952, seventy-nine freshmen entered Beaverhead County High School. They received a hearty wel- come from all. Initiation ended with a bang Friday night when the Sophomores sponsored the Freshman Mixer. In return the Fresh- men sponsored a dance, which started their treasury rolling. The following were elected to clas s offices for the year: Bob D'Evelyn, President; Donna Lee Given, Vice-president; Secretary, Mary Garrison; and Treasurer, Gary Swartz. They are as follows: Sen- tinel, James Marchesseault; Secretary, Lowell Nelson; Treasurer, Tom Pen- dergast; Reporter, Wayne Harrison; President, Dan Pendergast; Vice Presi- dent, Delmar Rowe; and Advisor, Mr. Walton. This year the Future Farmers of America are celebrating their twenty- fifth anniversary. The chapter was started here at the high school in 1930 with Bernard Williams as advisor and Dan Pendergast Sr., president. Now, twenty-five years later, his son, Dan, sits in the same place. During these years the chapter has won several awards at both district and state conventions. They have two revolving projects which are running very smoothly. The chapter has thirty-five head of registered targhee sheep which Lyle Eliason is running on shares. This fall Dale Metlen gave the chapter a registered shorthorn heifer to start a revolving project. Lowell Nelson now has the heifer as part of his supervised-farming project. We have also had several chapter activities which have been interesting. Among these were the Harvest Ball at which Dixie South was crowned Harvest Queen, and the annual Parent and Son Banquet, given by the boys in honor of their parents and also as a celebration of their twenty-fifth anniversary. 63 Cheerleaders Our five active cheerleaders, consisting of three seniors: Doris Stefantz, Dixie South, and Carolee Bonneau, together with two jun- iors: Vonda Jones and Dalene Lessey, were chosen by the student body to lead them in yells at the games. All have been cheer- leaders for one year except Dixie, who was one last year. The girls made their own costumes, gold satin blouses and blue gab- erdine jumpers. Their efforts have contributed greatly in improv- ing the school spirit. Left to right. First Row: J. Sneed, M. Harrington, M. Wolfe, S. Ibey, B. Benson, W. Pil- grim, B. Clemow, D. Lessey, Y. The society plans to hold a tournament in the spring. Officers for the year were: President, George Slanger; Vice- president, John Wilke; Secretary-treasurer, Carolyn Fry; and Librarian, Elizabeth Orr. Anyone for chess? 66 BARBARA KING President Thespians HENRY PANNUTO, JR, Sponsor The National Thespian Society derives its name from Thespis, reputed founder of Western drama. The society's symbols are the Greek masks of comedy and tragedy, and it is devoted to the advancement of dramatic arts in the secondary schools. Requirements for membership are more or less based on the point system, but quality is an important factor and members must be active. This year our sponsor, Mr. Henry Pannuto Jr., is establishing two plagues in the auditorium, one on each side of the stage. Qn one is to be placed the name of the best actor for the year and the play he was in; and on the other is to be placed the name of the best actress for the year and the play she was in. This year the Thespians sponsored the Christmas play and the all-school play, THE HAPPY DAYS, which was a great success. The society's annual dance, used to advertise the all-school play, was also an all-around success. 67 President, BOB LOVERIDGE First Row, left to right: F. Willis, W. Harrison, J. Mequier, N. The club has had many projects this year including an ice- skating rink, a hay ride, a ping-pong tournament, a very success- ful dance, and a quiz show, It Pays to Know , which was present- ed for the student body. The Key Club also had charge of the Rec Center this year. President was Bob Loverdige and sponsor, Mr. Posey. 68 Color Guard Color Guard mem- bers are chosen each year by the Student Council. PANNUTO CAROLYN FRY BARBARA KING TERESA JAKOVAC Director Business Manager Stage Manager Properties “The Happy Days,” a play in the round February 15 and 16 were dates to be remembered as among the most in- teresting and enjoyable of the year. For on those dates the all-school play, THE HAPPY DAYS, scored a financial and artistic success that had not taken place in the school for sometime. Both students and townspeople flocked to see the play on its two-night run in Dillon. They were rewarded with a plea- santly entertaining evening made possible by good acting and the able directing of Mr. Henry Pannuto Jr., sponsor of the school's Thespian Troupe 752. Be- hind-the-scenes work was done by stage manager Barbara King, property manager Teresa Jakovac, and business manager Carolyn Fry. Their con- scientious work contributed greatly to the success of the play. On the evening of February 17, The Happy Days company also presented the play at Wisdom to a very hospitable and appreciative audience. The play dealt with young people who were growing up and having the usual troubles and problems of growing up. It seems that Marianne, Sharon Stanch- field, has a crush on Oliver, George Slanger, a distant cousin who imagines himself sophisticated and also bored with Marianne. Pernette, played by Janet Johnson, Oliver1 s sister, is being pursued by Bernard, played by Boone Sparrow who is Marianne's stuttering brother. Francine, played by Barbara Carlson, is the oldest and soberest of the lot; therefore, it falls to her to keep order. Micheal,Jack Bogut, is the handsome aviator whose presence delights the girls and disturbs the boys. The Good Old Days 1. Mickey Magee 2. Bob Loveridge 3. Joyce Sneed 4. Alberta Simpson 5.
