BEAVERS’ CLASS OF 1954 BEAVERHEAD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL DILLON, MONTANA THE CLASS OF 1954 DEDICATES ITS ANNUAL TO JULES AND “RED” In hopes that we might give them the recognition they so rightfully deserve, we hereby dedicate our annual to Jules Wenger and George Pet- tit. It is due to their perseverance and hard work that the school build- ing is clean and comfortable for us. We consider ourselves very for- tunate to have them as our custodians. 2 FIRST QUARTER FACULTY STUDENT ASSOCIATION FRESHMEN FOOTBALL SECOND QUARTER SOPHOMORES BASKETBALL SPORTS' BOOSTERS SCIENTISTS THIRD QUARTER JUNIORS DRAMATICS HO NOR ARIES JOURNALISM FOURTH QUARTER SENIORS TRACK MUSIC 3 SPECIAL AWARDS To The Seniors: In the years to come you will turn the pages of this book with memories of Beaverhead High. May each picture and each name re- new the joy that is yours at this graduation time. M. C. Aahl, Principal ADMINISTRATION Not too often seen but keenly appreciated for their administrative capabilities and their warm friendship to all, are the members of the Board of Trustees. Their behind-the-scenes work has placed Beaver- head County High School as one of the best in the state. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mrs. Christine Anderson, Chairman Mrs. Theo Bay, Superintendent Mr. C. E. Blinn Mrs. W. W. Hawkins Mr. Edwin Hilger Mr. Joe Rowe 4 Mr. Wallace Christensen To the Seniors: Sometimes I believe the pupil feels a gulf between himself and the teacher, but in the deepest sense this is not true. We are all learners, teachers as well as students, from the day of our birth to the end of life which is the master teacher. If we cease to seek after knowledge as it is found in books, in nature, in human relations we are untrue to our God -given c a - pacitiesfor mental and spiritual growth. The school and the teacher are but helps to start the individual on the great quest of learning. As one of your teach- ers I share with the faculty in the sincere hope that here you have caught a glimpse of the desirability of learning and that you will go out from these halls with open minds and a zest for the pursuit of know- ledge. Lenore McCollum, Assistant Principal. To the Seniors: For youth, in a complex society, education is more than a luxury; it is a necessity. It must prepare them to improve on the civilization which their fathers have built; to live more fully than their parents have lived; to be more farsighted statesmen and leaders in world affairs than their fathers have been. Seniors, I hope your four years of life at Beaver- head County High School, will aid you in this complex society. May I congratulate you on your achievements and fine plans for the future, wishing you the best life that our society has to offer. W. J. The secretary of the office plays a very necessary part in the lives of the stu- dents. This year we are fortunate to have Mrs. Fern Fox with us. Credit must be given to this patient, long-suf- fering person, for she must listen to the long list of excuses, which the students dream up, and de- cide whether or not they deserve a permit. This job is just her minor duty as compared with acting as secretary to the principal and keeping charge of the books for the various clubs. TO THE CUSTODIANS: To Jules Wenger and Red Pettit go our thanks for the very fine job they do keeping our building clean. They can be seen working late at night and on Saturdays. These two men have shown unselfish attitudes in their willingness to assist with programs and dances that we have held. To these two men go our thanks, not only from the Sen- ior Class, but from the entire school, for their friendly, cooperative services. 9 STUDENT ASSOCIATION OFFICERS CAROLYN SARGENT President JOHN McCOLLUM Vice President ELIZABETH McFADDEN Treasurer SHARON STANCHFIELD Secretary ELVA OWEN Business Manager State Bank Trust Company, Member F. NATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY The National Thespian Society gets its name from the Greek, Thespis, reputed founder of drama, and so is related to dramatics. It has been established in many secondary schools throughout the United States and in other countries to stir interest in drama and give it a more prominent place in the school program. Membership for Thespians is based on the point system, and points are given for stage work, acting, and dramatic readings . The members are required to maintain certain national standards to remain in the society, and they pledge to do so upon entering. This year two one-act plays were presented and directed by the Thespians. QM was directed by Hal Wight, and MThe Window was di- rected by Jon Tolson. Q was taken to Missoula for the Interscholastic Meet. There were two formal initiations held this year, the first in January and the second in May. There are now more than 1000 clubs throughout the nation. The first Montana club was formed in Billings. New members are selected by the faculty. The list of these names is compiled by the teachers and is presented to the old members, who se- lect them. They are chosen on the basis of leader ship, scholastic stand- ing, thespians ability, and athletic standing. Only about 10 per cent of the high school enrollment can become members of this club. It is not, however, a secret or fraternal organization. On April 5, 1950, the Dil- lon Key Club was started with fifteen members. The object of the Key Club is to develop initiative and leadership, to provide experience in liv- ing and working together, to serve the school through its administrative officer and the community, and to prepare for useful citizenship. The club sponsored many worthwhile projects this year. It sponsored a kite flying contest, completed and maintained an ice skating rink, spon- sored a March of Dimes dance, tightened the bleachers in the gym, held a magazine drive for Montana Institutions, and sponsored a boy to Boys' State. The club holds its weekly meetings every Monday noon. Each mem- ber furnishes his own lunch. At each meeting a Kiwanian is present. This year's Key Club officers are: Bob Loveridge, President; John Me Collum, Vice-President; Don Murray, Secretary; Jules Marches- seault, Treasurer. At this year's State Convention, Bob Loveridge was elected State Treasurer. 42 Gosman’s Drug SEATED LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Clemow, M. Harrington, H. Wight, B. Cottom, B. King, Miss McGown. SECOND ROW: B. The pur- pose of the ski club is to create interest within the school and organize the skiers. The skiers are fortunate as there are two excellent ski runs in the county, one at Jackson and one at Elkhorn. There are also a num- ber of runs in the surrounding country. Our club is a member of the Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Association. Officers this year are Hal Wight, President; Bill Cottom, Vice Pre sident; Mary Harrington, Secretary-Treasurer. The sponsor is Miss McGown. 43 McCracken Brothers ✓ Harold Jensen Business Manager Mrs. Mildred Avery Sponsor BUSINESS STAFF OF THE “BEAVER” Four Busy Beavers Montana Motor Court Davis Electric 44 Henry J. Stamm Jeweler’s 58 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 6,1950, seventy-eight shy, bewildered freshmen entered the halls of BCHS, eager to be- gin climbing the ladder of high school success. Mr. Aahl and the faculty welcomed us and the sophomores proceeded with the general paces of initiation. Friday night we were the guests of the sophomores at a mixer. At the end of the dance, we were of- ficially accepted into high school. Ahophonoring old Saint Valentinewas staged by us after the Beaver- Whitehall game on the evening of February 17. We also accepted the responsibility of managing the Beaver Lodge from February 19 to March 2. Officers for this first year in high school were Bill Bierrum, president; Jack Kenison, vice-president; Bill Cottom, secretary; Roberta Bowering, treasurer; Jeanetter Thompson, yell leader. Janet Williss and Sharon Hovde represented our class on the Beaver Lodge Committee and John McCollum was our student council member. Our sponsors were Mr. Bierrum and Mr. Gump. At the beginning of our sophomore year, our membership increased to eighty-eight making us the larg- est class in the school. Carolyn Sargent, Bill Bierrum, and Yvonne Wenger received the high honor of being initiated into the National Honor Society. We were also honored by having three sophomore members in the Key Club-- Joe Turner, John McCollum, and Bill Bierrum. Four of our athletic-minded sophomores were initiated into the ”B Club. These boys were Joe Turner, Jack Selway, Bill Bierrum, and Jack Kenison. Class officers for 1951-1952 were Jerry Dumke, president; Jack Bogut, vice-president; Bill Cottom, secretary;Roberta Bowering, treasurer; Lois Peters, yell leader. Mr. Bierrum and Miss Gilleland were our class sponsor. More esteemed and eager to enter the activities of our school, we enthusiastically began attendance once more in 1952 as upperclassmen. Carolyn Sargent was elected as our president; Yvonne Wenger held the position of vice-president; Kay Nelson kept a record of our class meeting; Nora Lee Jones had charge of our dues and funds; and Janet Williss led our class in yells at assemblies. Color Guard alternates are chosen from the Junior Class and our representatives were Frank Perusich, Jim Dodd, Jules Marchesseault, Nora Lee Jones, Yvonne Wenger, Kay Nelson, Lorraine Grimes. Sally Stroeder and Lorraine Grimes voiced our opinions on the Beaver Lodge Committee and John McCollum, Pat Richardson, Joan Christensen at- tended student council meetings. Our sponsors were Mr.Ryerson, Mr. Stroud, and Mrs. Andrus. John Mc- Collum, Jerry Dumke and Gunnar Kalsta were added to the present B Club membership and Carolyn Sargent won selection as a cheerleader. The year of 1953saw George Walker, Jim Dodd, Barbara Tysdal, Roberta Bowering, and Frank Perusich initiated into the National Honor Society. The delegates for that all-important anticipated event--Montana Boys'State--were selected and noti- fied of their appointment. Those attending were Gunnar Kalsta, Bill Bierrum, Henry Lohr, Chuck Pilgrim, George Walker, Fred Olsen, Louis Richardson, Jon Tolson, John McCollum, Jules Marchesseault,Frank Perusich, and Harold Peterson; Carolyn Sargent was elected by the girls of our class to represent BCHS at Montana Girls'State which was held in Billings. Yvonne Wenger was selected as the alternate. Vic West- ergard attended Red Cross Camp and Janet Williss and Phyllia Pickering received instruction at Publica- tions Pow Wow held at the University of Montana. The biggest project during our third year in high school was the Junior Prom which was held on April 32 (May 2). The theme April in Paris was carried out in shades of pink, lavender, and blue. This colorful and all exciting event took place in the gymnasium. Seniors at last! For the first time, we were able to take part in the freshmen initiation as Most hon- orable and almighty senior. . . Senior class officers elected this year were Frank Perusich, president; Lois Peters, vice-president; Gail Huntley, secretary; John McCollum, treasurer. Lorraine Grimes and Fred Olsen were our elected mem- bers of the student council. Mr. Ryerson, Mr. Stroud, Mrs. Andrus, and Miss Christy were our class spon- sors. This year found Carolyn Sargent installed as our student body president and John McCollum was elec- ted as vice-president of the school. Our class was honored in having Gail Huntley and Lorraine Grimes chosen as the last two members of the class to be initiated into the National Honor Society. John Mc- Collum was elected president of Chemocrats, Jules Marchesseault headed F. F. A., and Hal Wight was chosen president of the Ski Club. Joe Turner became president of the B Club and Frank Perusich, presi- dent of the National Honor Society. Janet Williss and Phyllis Pickering took over the tremendous duties of the BEAVER, editor and assistant editor, respectively. Liliom was chosen for the senior class play, in which Fred Olsen played an outstanding part to win the Best Actor Award for the year. The big project for the year was editing the 1954 annual, the BEAV- ERS’ TALE, with Gail Huntley heading the staff. The class of 1954 has had a full and eventful class history which will be hard to equal and it is sin- cerely hoped that the lives of its active members will continue to be as progressive and energetic as they were during their days in good old BCHS. 59 Ned-Eva Lanes Roberta Theater Queen Lois Peters and her attendants Nora Lee Jones and Carol Cocanaugher.
