RAY FULMER The aims of the driving course are two-fold: First, to teach us the mechanics of driving an automobile, and second, to instill in us the proper and polite habits of road courtesy. The course consists of one semester of class work, which includes lectures, discussions, visual aids, and question and answer periods. Each student taking the course also receives several hours of actual driving and observation throughout the school year. STUDENT TEACHER Miss Sara Klausman, a senior at Pennsylvania State College. This is the first year that we have had student teachers at Beaver. The entire student body found having student teachers a very interesting and educational ex- perience. We, the student body, sincerely hope that this practice will be continued in the future. CLASS HISTORY On September 2, 1947, We entered the doors of Beaver Vocational High School-thirty-nine rather green-looking freshmen. In a short time the class of '51 was a going organization. Our officers were: Richard Dean, president, John Hassinger, vice-president, Amber Hassinger, secretary-treasurer, and Twila Aigler, assistant se-cretary-treas- urer. The faculty was: Mr. Marlan Shearer as principal, Mr. George Fetterolf, Mrs. Sarah Charles, Mrs. Jean Kline, Mr. John Slegeski, Mrs. Donna Walker, Miss Betty Jane Herr, Mr. Daniel Womer, and Mr. H. Daniel Baylor who came to taske the place of Mr. Wo:mer, who resigned from the facu.lty. Mrs. Kline and Mrs. Charles were our class advisors. Our first class activity was a booth at the Beaver Fair, held September 18, 19, 20. Our booth was entitled Safety in the Home, and we won third prize. January 14, 1948, the whole student body attended the Farm Show at Harris- burg, and the next activity was the Fashion Show on January 23, in which all the freshmen girls participated. For our assembly we presented a radio program of short skits. The musi-c department activities included the County Chorus at Middleburg on March 19, Forensics on April 2 at Selinsgrove, and the Spring Concert on May 7. . The Junior-Senior Prom was held May 13. Being our first Prom it was a very thrilling event. Baccalaureate services were held May 23 and Commencement May 28. Thus, we saw one lclass complete their four years at Beaver while we had completed one short year. We had many experiences that year which helped us to become better students throughout the rest of our high school days. During the year We lost seven of our classmates-Phyllis Hornberger, Betty Weader, Richard Dean, Mae Snook, Charles Brouse, Hoover Herman, and Russell Lefpley. We gained one member, Wayne McCardle. - When we returned on August 30, 1948, to start our second year at Beaver we had a total of thirty-one members. Robert Wagner, Milton Yetter, and Walter Zechman did not return but we were joined by Phyllis Peters who 'moved into the community from Lewistown. Our officers were: John Hassinger, president, Anna Louise Dreese, vice-pres- identg and Mary Ellen Krebs, secretary-treasurer. -Changes in the faculty were Mrs. Irene Benner for Mrs. Charles and Mr. James Howell for Mr. Slegeski. Mr. Fetterolf was our class advisor. The Beaver Fair was held September 23, 24, 25, and we won second prize on our booth entitled High Prices and Inflation. Our assembly was in the form of a living room party with an orchestra, sing- ing, and a skit. There were several special assemblies-A debating team from Bucknell Uni- versity, two speakers, also from Bucknell-the one spoke on Divorce and the other on Conservation of Our Natural Resources -and Mr. Harvey Murray gave a talk on The Highways of Pennsylvania. Our moneyemalking activities during the year were selling Easter cakes and having an eating stand at a sale in Beaver Springs. Both activities 'proved profitable. We 'received our copies of the first edition of The Brook on May 6, and how wonderful the days that followed! Everybody was so busy getting their books autographed since this was a new tradition started at Beaver. The Spring Concert was held May 6, and the County Chorus at Selinsgrove on May 16. The Junior-Senior Prom was held in the gym May 12. May 18 our class journeyed to Sunbury to visit the Sunbury Daily Item, the Butter-Krust Bakery, and Fort Augusta. In the evening we roller skated at Island Park and everybody had a wonderful time. Baccalaureate Services were held May 15 and Commencement May 20. Now the class of '49 was gone and we were half way through our high school days. During the year Paul Bowersox left for another school and Anna Earnest dropped out. Twenty August 29, 1949, and we were ready to start the second-half of our high school career and we were also upperclassmen. All of our members returned and there were two changes in the faculty. Mr. Donald Houck for Miss Herr and Mrs. Charles returned again in the place of Mrs. Benner. Mr. Howell was our class advisor and as officers we elected Carl Young, pres- identg Phyllis Peters, vice-president, Anna Louise Dreese, secretary, and Shirley Deppen, treasurer. At the Beaver Fair, September 22, 23, 24, we had a ball and a dart stand with which we did well financially. We also displayed a booth on Youth of Amer- ica and won second prize. At the beginning of the term we decided to get the Beaver Broadcaster printed but after one issue we changed our minds and printed it ourselves for the remainder of the term. We worked very hard each month to make each issue as interesting as possible. September 27 the student body journeyed to Williamsport to see a Police Rodeo which was very entertaining. After waiting patiently for several weeks, we received our rings and pins on December 8, 1949. That was a wonderful day! Another wonderful day was January 17, 1950-the night our varsity basket- ball team defeated McClure. Remember? We had the next day off to celebrate. That night our class and the seniors went to Susquehanna University to see Shakespeare's MACBETH, presented by the Susquehanna Players. Through fine co-operation we were able to have an eating stand at each home basketball game and we also had several successful bake sales, one at Beaver Springs on February 11, one at Beavertown on March 18, and another at Beaver Springs on April 29. All of these projects increased the balance of our treasury considerably. This year Beaver was host to the County Chorus on April 21. April 28 was Booster Day for the Varsity Club and in the evening a juke- box dance was held. May 11 the second edition of The Brook came out and again everybody was busy getting their books autographed before the seniors would leave. The seniors had their Farewell Assembly May 12, and our final tribute to them was a Farewell Picnic at the Tall Timbers. We went on two tractors and wagons and everyone had a splendid time. Our Junior-Senior Prom was a success after much planning and work. It was held in the gym on May 12. The theme of the Prom was Cinderel1a. Baccalaureate Services for the class of '50 were held May 20 and Commence- ment May 22. Now all our upperclassmen had graduated and we would be next to go. Dur- ing the year we lost only one member, Park Aumiller, who left the icofmmunity. When we returned to Beaver on August 28, 1950, to begin our last year in high school there were twenty-eight in our class. Shirley Deppen didn't return, but Jim Folk joined us. There were no changes in the faculty and Mr. Howell was again our class advisor. Our class officers were: Dueressa Bailey, presidentg John Hassinger, vice- presidentg Anna Louise Dreese, secretaryg and Amber Rae Hassinger, treasurer. At the Beaver Fair, September 20 to 23, we sponsored an eating stand which was an outstanding success. The members of the class really co-operated in this pro- ject and through co-operation, made it a success. We also had a booth on which we won first prize. It had to do with Democracy and Communism. During Pennsylvania Week in October, we visited several of the industries in Beavertown and Beaver Springs. This helped us to realize the important part our industries play in the community. October 27 our class sponsored a Halloween party for the whole school, and everybody present had an enjoyable evening of fun and recreation. November 1 we had the tryouts for our class play and from then until the day we presented it, we worked and practiced to make it a success. We presented MAKE MINE MONEY at 8:00 p. m. on December 2. We also gave a matinee on December 1, and we received many compliments on this, another class lproject. Twenty-One -,-- --- ..... -------- - 'T'T:Y:T 23:2 23:31 '13131312:2:E:f: ' ---' -' f7'.y.'z . - We journeyed to Susquehanna University to see another Shakespearean play on November 13-THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, presented by the Susquehanna, Players. November 22 we had a Thanksgiving Assembly with each class contributing something to make it a well rounded program. Thanksgiving vacation was the 23rd and 24th of November. We elected the Hall of Fame of the Senior Class on December 4 and on thc 5th and 6th the pictures for The Brook were taken. The morning of December 22 the final intra-mural volley ball games fboys and girls'J were held. The boys' ping pong tournament was also played off. Then all the students gathered in the auditorium for the gift exchange and assembly. At 12:00 we were dismissed for Christmas vacation. Our first activity in 1951 was on January 5, when We went to Lewistown to have our graduation pictures taken. We received the proofs a week later and the pictures the middle of March. The school went to the Farm Show on the 10th of January. The next day we took our first-semester examinations. During the first semester we had a course that was very helpful to us seniors. It was our Family Relations class. A professor from State College gave us a test on Social Attitudes on Janu- ary 22. We also had to write essays on the subject, Myself, Eight Years From Now. We wonder how our present hopes will compare with our lives eight years hence. Mr. Fetterolf, who has duplicates of these essays, will probably remind us. The Home and School Club of Beavertown had a square dan-ce for the junior- senior high students on January 24. They had an orchestra and several people to in- struct us since this was the first dance of this kind at Beaver. Seldom, if ever, have the students at Beaver had the opportunity to ice skate on the athletic field. But we were luoky on Friday, February 2, when we were able to ice skate during school hours. During January and February the staff of the yearbook worked very hard to lmake it better and even more interesting than before. This was a big task and again we stuck together as a class and did our best. Friday, February 23, in a special assembly, we were able to see a ventriloquist perform, which was indeed entertaining. The Student Council sponsored several juke box dances during March and April so that the students -could get in practice for the Prom. The Forensics were held at Beaver on ,March 9 and Beaver won six events- alto solo, clarinet solo, saxophone solo, girls' trio, girls' glee club, and mixed chorus. During the year we had two student teachers in the Home Economics De- partment. This experience was not only helpful to the student teachers but also to the student body. The last few weeks of school were busy ones. With the annual Junior-Senior Prom on May 5, Varsity Club Banquet sponsored by the Student Council, Alumni Banquet, final examinations, our Farewell Assembly on our last day of school, May 15, and the usual activity concerned with getting ready for graduation. Baccaleaureate Services were held May 20 and Tuesday, May 22, the twenty- seven lmembers of the class of 1951 graduated from the school in which we spent many happy days. During the year we lost one member, Norma June Bailey. We left for our trip to Washington D. C. on the morning of May 23, and re- turned late the 26th after having spent four days of sightseeing in the capital city of our nation. Novw we are part of the Alumni of Beaver Vocational High School, and we are very proud of it, but we shall never forget the happy days that we spent at our Alma Mater. For many of us it was the end of our formal education, but for some, it was just a stepping stone to a higher learning. During our four years we saw much improvement at Beaver, in that the entire school program became more diversified. The fine training we received in high school will most assuredly help us take our rightful place in society. We, the seniors of '51, owe mu-ch to our Alma Mater, may we ever remain faithful to her. The Beaver Springs Home and Community Club, with the assistance of eight women who are not members, have contributed their time and the art of fine cooking to the students of Beaver. The noon meal, which is delicious as well as nutritious, is made possible through their fine co-operation. The club receives a check each month in payment for its services, and this money is used for playground equipment and community improvements. The students of Beaver have also shown fine co-operation in their participation during the lunch hour. The average number of students being served this year has been sixty-two. The Beaver girls were in the thick of the fight for the championship throughout, finally losing out by a few points the last game of the season, Next year's team will miss the excellent teamwork and spirit of four of the sen- ior girls. These girls: Elsie Fleming, Dueressa Bailey, Anna Louise Dreese, and Am- ber Hassinger played the game fairly and to the very best of their ability at all times. The team at all times was a credit to the girls, the school, and their community. Only by fine team work and co-operation among a group may goals, such as this team has attained, be reached. o Fifty-Nine f? 'A .... Blessed are the meek: for teachers forget about them. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after knowledge: for they shall be stuff- ed full. Blessed are ye, when teachers shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely. Rejoice and be exceeding glad: for great is your acclaim in Beaver, for so persecut- ed they the students before you. The preacher had tied the knot and was filling out the certilficate. The young man, who appeared very nervous, spoke at last. How much do I owe you? The parson smiled, As much as you think the girl's worth. The young man handed him a dollar bill, which the minister took without comment. The young man was reluctant in leaving: in fact the minister thought he wasn't going to get rid of the couple. Have I forgotten anything? he finally asked. My change, said the young man. The principal of the school was making a prayer at assembly exercises. Oh Lord , he said, Bless those who are called upon to teach! A voice arnong the the students added: And don't forget those who are called upon to recite.
