Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1981 volume:

photo by Jeff Duflo ALMA MATER There’s a land of rushing waters Where once a forest grew And the dark trees trailed their branches In the rivers dusky hue. There the beavers build their houses In confidence serene And the sunset was the orange And the forest was the green. BEAVERIAN 1981 BEAVER RIVER CENTRAL SCHOOL BEAVER FALLS, NEW YORK REFLECTIONS . . . Dedicated to the Parents of the Class of 1981 Senior year is a time for many decisions. In dedicating our yearbook, we asked ourselves who had done the most for us as a class and as individuals. Although there have been numerous persons involved in our high school years, none have come close to your prominence. As parents you have sacrificed a tremendous amount for us. Your hard work, care, and love have given us the incentive to seek success. Through the years we have taken much more than we can ever repay. In dedicating this yearbook, we, the Class of 1981, hope to slightly decrease our immeasurable debt to you. Graduation is a time when we must look forward while recalling the past. New beginnings await as we leave B.R.C.S., and new people will enter our lives as we face the future. We realize the important role your guidance has played in our lives and vow never to forget the doors you have opened for us. One day, many of us will watch as our child receives his or her diploma. It will be then from our pocket the money for class rings, senior pictures, and caps and gowns must originate. Only then will we fully comprehend all that you have given. Reflecting on our past, it is from our love and gratitude that this dedication stems. Thank you. 3 HOMECOMING Homecoming is a time when old friends return and new memories are acquired — Homecoming 1980 was no exception. The theme was “Movies” and the weekend began “rolling” at the Pep Rally on Friday. The popcorn party at 7:00 was highlighted by the 1st annual Big Mouth Contest. Saturday dawned, but not bright and clear. Rain clouds threatened during the float parade and judging. Unfortunately, a consistent downpour discouraged the majority of spectators at the football game. During half time the Seniors out yelled the underclassmen to win the Pep Jug. The game versus the Spartans ended in a 14 14 tie. Starting at 8:00 p.m., Kindergarten played tunes for our 11th Homecoming dance. Under the “direction” of Student Council and all the Cheerleaders, the weekend was one we will all remember. 6 8EAVE6 centbal I W CLASS HISTORY bivei SCHOCM Vi September, 1978 arrived and WE WERE OFF AND RUNNING! Our first season was completed under the COACHING of Mr. Shortt. Class President was Scott Haluska; Vice President, Pam Corey: Secretary, Sheri Monnat; and Treasurer, Rob Campany. Our sophomore year came and we were ready to TACKLE any problem. Class officers were President, Rhonda Foote; Vice President, Dari Zehr; Secretary, Lisa LaPlant; and Treasurer, Mary Widrick. Coach Shortt returned and warned us to stop WARMING THE BENCH. We realized that the next year we’d join the Varsity ranks and wanted to have our ACT TOGETHER. Fund raising events included a sub sale, dance, kit sale, and they all helped PIN our opponent — bankruptcy. Our junior year began and officers UP TO BAT were President, Lisa LaPlant: Vice President, Rob Campany; Co-Secretaries, Sheri Monnat and Brenda Zehr; and Treasurer, Mary Widrick. We were SET to make a big SPLASH. Coach Shortt reminded us that junior year was no FREE THROW and we began to plan for Senior year. To raise the SCORE of our treasury we had a dance, sold Tom Watt and . . . The Junior-Senior Prom wound up our season as UNBEATABLE Juniors and we got PSYCHED for our final year of high school. We gave a CHEER as our Senior year arrived and we vowed not to end up in the GUTTER. Mr. Hall joined Mr. Shortt in the COACHING RANKS and class officers were President, Lisa LaPlant; Vice President, Rob Campany; Secretary, Teresa Lyndaker; and Treasurer, Deb Brouty. Our GAME PLAN consisted of magazine sales and the Christmas Ball. High POINTS included Senior week and, of course, graduation! As we look back in our memories via INSTANT REPLAY, we are certain that we have reached our GOAL. Undoubtedly, the Class of 1981 has achieved a tremendous VICTORY. 7 1. Kay Widrick 2. Mr. Brian Klossner 32 PAeciaf 0tecc mAi m Mr. James Hall Mr. Earl Shortt The Class of 1981 extends its appreciation to our advisors, Mr. Shortt and Mr. Hall. The most important choice of our freshman year was the selection of Mr. Shortt as our advisor. From 1977 to 1981 Mr. Shortt has shared our hopes, mistakes, and most importantly, our achievements. Thank you does not seem to say enough to this special individual and the Class of 1981 takes this moment to recognize our friend and advisor. The Class of 1981 also extends its thanks to co-advisor for our Senior year, Mr. Hall. As our friend and advisor, he has further illustrated his care and interest in the student body of BRCS. The Class of 1981 respectfully acknowledges former classmate William Downing. The Class of 1981 extends its sympathy to the family of William Downing. Our school district and community was saddened by the death of Mr. Gerald Kirch. Mr. Kirch’s dedication and service to education and BRCS spanned thirty-five years and affected the lives of many within Lewis County. The bus rides to BOCES get monotonous at times, but with continuous card games, along with other pastimes, our sanity is safely kept. Attending BOCES gives us the opportunity to advance our knowledge in a particular field, as well as to develop friendships with students from surround- ing schools. As we are ready to begin our lives in the working world, we realize the vast importance of this educational service. FACULTY Row 1: C. Lambie. S. Winkley. G. Salmon. M. Golas. R. Pellegrino. J. Mr. Haluska 81 In February 1980, ten B.R.C.S. students enjoyed a two week vis- it to France. Their travels took them from home to Brockville, Ontario, to Montreal, Quebec, and to Paris. They covered over 1300 miles while in France. In Paris they visited the Louvre Museum; Notre-Dame Cathedral; the Arc de Triomphe; Mont- martre. the artists’ quarter; Na- poleon’s tomb; and the Eiffel Tower. From Paris they went to Ver- sailles. home of Louis XIV, the Sun King, and from there traveled north and then along the coast of the English Channel and back to Paris. Castles, a winery, a disco, the Normandy coast, shopping, eating, the Metro, and a bus driv- er who spoke no English, were but some of the highlights. A la prochaine fois! FHA Row 1: J. Kloster, C. I have never known such nice people and I am very happy because I had the opportunity to spend time with you. I would like to write all the wonderful things that I have experienced with all of you but it is impossible, because I believe it would take all the space in the yearbook. I am sure this year has been one of the most beautiful years of my life. I would like to give a special “thank you” to a wonderful family — the Elmers. I can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to live in their home and to have the chance to love them. Another person who helped me tre- mendously during my stay is Mrs. Vowles. With all my love I would also like to thank my Mexican parents who made this trip possible. I don’t believe that it’s necessary to thank everyone who has helped me during this year because they know who they are. I know I will never forget you, that will be impossible. I will be awaiting your visit in Mexico. You are always welcome in my house. I won’t say good-by, only see you later, because we will always be to- gether. With all my love, Claudia Baez First of all I want to say that this year at B.R.C.S. was great — a wonderful, unforgettable time of my life. It was very interesting to meet new people and to learn new customs. My stay in America will be a helpful experience in my future work in Italy. I want to thank all of the students, teachers, and counselors at B.R.C.S. for making me feel like at home, and a special thanks to my American family who helped me in many ways and for treating me as a son. (Grazie ancora per tutto.) Ciao, Alex I would like to say thank you to my host family, the Ryans; to my teachers; to my parents in Japan; and especially to my dear friends. My friends have taught me American ways and customs. They have given me lots of kindness and a wonderful experience. Students at BRCS are very lucky to have many excellent teachers. Americans enjoy their lives very much — they are not overworked, and students are more happy and free and active. Before I came to the United States, my life was very narrow. Because of my stay here at Beaver River, I have learned to be more flexible in my ap- proach to life. I hope BRCS continues to welcome International Fellowship Exchange Students and I hope someone from BRCS will come to Japan and stay sometime soon. Kazuko Yamamoto It is difficult to find the right words to express my sincere gratitude I feel toward all the people that have helped me to cope with all the difficulties I encountered while here in this school. The life style here is very different from the one in Peru and therefore, very broadening. To me every day here means more English learned, more friends, and knowledge of things I had never seen before. My stay here means more to me than just a three month stay and learning some English but more important is the fact that I can learn to internalize local customs and the knowledge of what opportunities exist here for a better future for me. Not only are there many more schools and colleges and universities here but technology is much more advanced than the one in my country. To help in the development of Peru, a great need for well-trained skilled technologists exists. My goal then is to learn what I can in the field of technology so that I can put that knowledge to work when I get back. For this reason I appreciate the help the Widrick family has given me, the help all teachers have extended during my stay in this lovely community. Thank you Widricks, thanks classmates, thank you Beaver River Central School. Javier Garaycochea 85 COLOR- GUARD Row 1: L Proulz, S. Steiner. J. Ritz. J. Altmire, R. Foote Row 2: L. Elmer. GAA SOCCER The varsity soccer team had only two returning starters from last year’s team. The Beavers were in- vited to a September soccer tourna- ment at Lafargeville and they played the first game to a 1-1 tie. Because of the tie, a sudden death penalty shot shoot out was held. Thousands Islands prevailed by one goal. The next day the team came back and defeated General Brown for third place. The team showed a tremendous amount of improvement. They man- aged to win an amazing eight games and turned the table on Lafargeville by defeating them 4-2. A real high point of the season was the perfor- mance of the team as they upset 10th seeded Sandy Creek (2-0) at Beaver Falls. This was a true team win and demonstrated how much the girls have improved. The future appears bright as next year’s team will have nine returning starters and twenty other returning lettermen. VARSITY CLUB OFFICERS 99 1980 TRACK FIELD The 1980 edition of boys’ track and field completed the dual meet season with a 6-2 record. Wins came against South Lewis, Adiron- dack, Old Forge, Gouverneur, Hol- land Patent, and powerful West- moreland. South Jefferson posted an excit- ing 7714-7214 win over the Beavers in the most disappointing meet of the year. A highly imporved Water- town team topped BROS for the first time in the last 3 years. In Sectional competition the team placed 4th at the Section III relay carnival, and 10th at the Section III C championships. A tremendously talented group of seniors will be lost to graduation, and this fact may present coaches Brown and Barrett with many head- aches for the 1981 season. Among this group of 12th graders are: tri- captains Ken Flint (new school high jump record holder), Doug Hoch, and Gary Demo. Philip Widrick, Mark Hills, Kerry Streeter, Ralph Taylor, and John Nortz will also be moving on to other things as they have spent many hours out on the field practicing. The track and field team at BRCS extends its thank-you to the faculty members and other volunteers who helped officiate the many home meets in 1980. Without this great support, the team could not flourish. It was a typical Frontier League “A” Division sea- son with many games decided by a single bounce of the ball. Though hampered by a paucity of varsity level experience, as the season commenced, these young men with characteristic perseverance pro- ceeded to refine their skills and continued on to achieve a very re- spectable finish. Led offensively by Seniors — Mike Ramos, Brent Planty, Brad Zehr, Joe Anderson, and Doug Keefer, along with David Becker, Pete Bush, and Duane Golden, the team batted, and scored 114 runs in 20 games. On the mound Seniors Joe Anderson and Brad Zehr and Ju- niors — Pete Bush and Dave Becker saw most of the action, while defensive responsibilities were shared by all the players listed above along with Rick Buckingham, Dari Zehr, Pat Boliver, Rob Cam- pany, and Darwin Keefer. With help in the near future from the freshmen and sophomore mem- bers of this season’s Frontier League “A” Division JV Champion Beavers, the future for varsity base- ball appears to be bright. The Bea- vers 46-0 thrashing of highly-fa- vored Lowville was the highpoint of the season. The heart-breaker was the 8-6 loss to League Champion IHC who had a line with an average weight in excess of 200 pounds. The most exciting game of the season was the 22-8 “come from behind victory over Indian River. Pete Bush took a short pass and zig-zagged his way 80 yards into the end zone. Bob Kerfien’s T.D. reception of a defected pass spelled defeat for the Warriors. The season suc- cess was based on a balance be- tween running and passing. The running game was led by All Northern back Dave Becker and the passing was executed by Ju- nior Rick Bush. The trio of Kirch, Kerfien and Bush were on the re- ceiving end of the Bush comple- tions. Dave Becker ran 197 times for 1138 yards, 13 TD’s and 10 xp’s. The success of the team was dependent on the line play and defense of Pat Boliver, Marty Turck, Kevin Zehr, Dari Zehr, Bill Jackson, Dan Golden, and Ken- ton Lyndaker. The success of next years’ team will be depen- dent upon the off-season weight program of our sophomores and juniors. Captain Scott Haluska. leading runner Kip Flint, Matthew Chamber- lain. and Leslie Petzoldt. Together these four boys ran many, many miles through their training in cross country. Highlights of the season were a 1st place finish by the Varsity at the Can-Am Invitational in Massena and a 2nd place finish in the Sauquoit Invitational. The Junior Varsity team ran to a 5-0 won-lost record in dual meets as well as posting Invitational wins at South Lewis and Tug Hill. The girls’ varsity runners showed great promise with Linda Demo and Diane Everard leading the way. BASKETBALL The 1980-81 Basketball Team was an improvement over last year, but was plagued by injuries, sickness, and in- consistent play. The team played ex- cellent ball but turnovers spelled de- feat. On the positive side, we defeated ARCH — rival Lowville 62-42 at Low- ville and 68-43 at home. We also fin- ished second in the Lewis County Christmas Classic, losing in the cham- pionship game by two points after a good comeback. Larry Lyndaker was voted MVP of the classic while John Schulz made the ALL-Tourney team. Junior Rick Bush led the team in scoring with 200 points. Running mate Mick Lehman had 179 points and was the leading rebounder, while missing two games. Senior Larry Lyndaker (171) and Freshmen John Schulz (167) averaged close to 10 a game while senior Bob Kerfien had 106 points. Paul Jones played excellent point guard and shot 52% from the field. Coming off the bench and providing a big lift were Les Petzoldt and Tony Kohler. Both boys were vastly im- proved as seniors and were an asset to the team. Better with each game, Matt Chamberlain, still another player whose year was hampered and was a big plus for us. Mick Lehman was se- lected to the League All Star Team this year. If we can stay away from injuries and learn how to cut down on turnovers and inconsistent defense, we will be shoot- ing for our next years goal of making the playoffs. 107 SWIMMING The Varsity Swim Team members enjoyed a 5-5 season in 1980-81. The team members recorded many personal bests throughout the sea- son. Senior Kip Flint served the team admirably as its captain and only Senior class representative. He finished his career as the 2 all- time fastest swimmer in the 100 yard butterfly. With only 10 Varsity Swimmers the team looked good at times. Depth obviously hurt the squad with only two upperclassmen swimming. A fine group of sophomores and a strong junior high squad composed primarily of 7th graders makes the future look bright for the Beavers. RIFLE The Beaver River Rifle Team fin- ished its 1980-81 season with a re- cord of 5 wins and 5 losses, and so finished fourth in the six-team Adir- ondack Rifle league. There were several outstanding performances by Beaver River shooters this year. Tim Nagy had high average for the team, with a 271. Tim was named to the All-League Team. Nannette Yousey broke the school record with a 284 and this was one of the highest scores fired in the league this year. Rick Wormwood broke the soph- omore record with a 274. Brad O’Brian fired a perfect 100 target and finished strongly. The team will miss seniors; Jack Boliver, Kevin Austin, Joe Martin, and Tim Nagy next year. All of them were valuable first-line shooters. The golf team had a major rebuilding year due to the loss of four starters from last years’ team. Rick Steria led the team with low stroke average. Ten boys played in enough matches this year to earn varsity letters. With every- one returning next year, except Rick, we should enjoy a much better season. 109 Advertising The Vanden Portrait It’s What You Want It To Be. You were kind and understanding loving and sincere, You were ready with a compliment and a friendly word of cheer. You gave with generosity that never seemed to end, You knew the lovely secret of how to be our friend. When the day was finally here for you to say good-bye, We became so full of fear all we could do was cry. We wish we could have found a way to tell you that we cared, We wish we could have thanked you for the friendship that we shared. VanCour (Croghan Town Clerk) Belfort Inn Robert and Helen Campany Bishop's General Store As our high school days draw to a close, and this book goes to press, I would like to express my gratitude for the help and guidance provided by the producers of the 1981 Beaverian. First, I would like to thank our fearless leader and advisor, Mr. Robert Williams, who saw us through thick and thin regardless of the staff's physical state. I must not leave out our publisher's representative, Mr. Bill Ce- lano, who was always ready to offer assistance. I greatly appreciate the contri- butions of our parents, merchants, local businessmen, and faculty, without whom, this publication would not have been possible. Last but not least, I cannot fully express my appreciation of the super service provided by the entire staff, especially, the terrific editors. We have all worked hard to capture the memories of our high school days. I hope we have succeeded. Rob Campany Chief Editor I would like to thank and congratu- late everyone who helped to reach our goal in the advertising section of the 1981 Beaverian yearbook. My goal couldn't have been reached without all your cooperation. The tremendous amount of work done paid off to make the 1981 Beaverian a huge success. With much appreciation, Pamela Corey Advertising Editor 138 V % •
