Beaver River Central School BEAVER FALLS. NEW YORK DEDICATION 1972 2 We, the members of the class of 1972 would like to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Lawrence Ryan. It is here that they receive specialized training. These stu- dents take this training in preparation for busi- ness life, college, and vocational pursuits. This first hand experience often means sacrifice. The vocational students miss class meetings, assem- blies, and activities. The students, however, feel reimbursed from the valuable training they re- ceive. 27 ELEMENTARY Rom- I: P. Geiger. D. Hunt. D. Thomas. A. Bush. M. Maloney, M. Currier. J. Finguerra. Row 2: G. It was a time of milk and crackers, recess, kickball, and paste eating. However, it also a time of the three R's—reading, rit- ing. and 'rithmetic. We, the class of 1972, would like to dedicate these two pages to the elementary teachers. We feel that they are often forgot- ten by the time we graduate. The class of 1972 has not forgot- ten your important role in getting us to this day. 30 UNDERCLASSMEN ? Row I: C. Austin. B. Boshart. C. Boliver. S. Campeau. Row 2: J. Hirsh. D. Glenn. A. Grunert, t. During the past summer, LuAnn Virkler traveled to Guatemala for two exciting and educational months. She visited many places and met many people, including the President of Guatemala. This past September, Hortencia “Tita” Salos came to Beaver Falls, from Arequipa, Peru. She has resided at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Schneeberger. During the school year, Tita attended Vocational school where she trained to fulfill her ambition of becoming a secre- tary. In June, Tita will return to Peru to study at the University. Through their experiences, these two girls feel that they have gained a better understanding of different people and their customs. 67 STUDENT LOAN FUND STUDENT COUNCIL Row 1: P. Campany. Highlights of the season in- cluded the big upset wins over Lowville and South Jeff in a tri-meet in the best team perform- ance of the season. Kenton Hoppel’s consistently outstanding individual performances, capped by a fifth place in the sectionals, made him the out- standing individual runner. In non-league competition the girl’s defeated Holland Patent twice, while losing to both Rome and New Hartford. In their Frontier League schedule, the girls defeated Lowville’s team for the first time in their four years of competition. In addition, the team posted two victories over Carthage, while being outscored twice by a strong Watertown team. By finishing with a 4-2 record, the girl’s team captured second place in the League behind the unde- feated Watertown team. 82 Row I: W. Petzoldt, L. Grau, S. Kalamas. P. Edwards. C. Lee. S. Bushey. The Beaver River GAA Field Hockey teams, under the direction of Miss Ford, impressed all their opponents this year with Teams I and II going undefeated and Team I regaining the Frontier League Championship title. The strong varsity offense was backed up by an equally strong defense. Beaver River scored 34 goals, to its opponents three. Excellent stickwork, teamwork and great determination were the prime fac- tors influencing the team's success. Row I: S. Bush. C. Wctmore, M. Lehman. C. Farney. R. Chartarnd. J. Lehman. FOOTBALL Although the football team dropped from two losses in 1970 to just one this year, the team finished second in the Frontier League behind undefeated General Brown. Lack- ing last year’s strong passing game, the 1971 football team resorted to ball control offense and a savage defense; a de- fense that shut out four teams, and held three to minus yardage. Led by All Upstate halfback Ron Lee and seven other All League members, including seniors Tom Meyer, Jim Martin, Jim Zehr. and co-captain Andy Grau, the Bea- vers played their most remembered game against Lowville. This was the first meeting of the two schools and although Beaver River won by only 10-0, our players so completely dominated the game that Lowville was held to minus sixty total yards for the night. The prospects for next year look bright with thirteen returning lettermen, including three jun- iors who made the All League team, and a strong group of upcoming sophomores. The highlight of the year was the winning of the Boonville Christmas Wrestling Tournament. There, the Beavers produced three third places (Darrell Roggie, Joe Bush, Joe Stanek), one second (Lynn Zehr), and four champions (John Bush, Ron Lee, Andy Grau, Kim Lyndaker). At the Frontier League Tournament, again the Bea- vers made their strongest showing ever, led by 155 pound League Champion Ron Lee and third places by Joe and John Bush, Lynn Zehr, and fourth by Earl Zehr. At the Sectionals, things did not go as well as ex- pected, but surprising strength was shown by the boys who will help build next year’s team. Darrell Roggie, Joe Bush, and Earl Zehr placed third, Calvin Shaw took fourth, and senior Lynn Zehr also took a third. Two other members of the Varsity who showed strong promise at the end of the year were John Campany and Mike Slayko, who along with Joe Sta- nek, should come into their own next year. The wrestling team can look back with pride on its best season yet. Although still a fairly young team, with only four seniors on the varsity squad, the team has improved considerably since last year. A strong showing was made against schools that have con- sistently had excellent wrestling teams. After a slow start, at the beginning of the season, the team came back to win the Boonville Christmas Tour- nament, its first championship ever. The Beavers, sporting a strong offense and a defense marked by a savage press, worked as a well balanced team. But the credit for this victorious season goes not only to the players. Mr. Giordano, who the players feel is the best coach in the league, was responsible for the success of the team. Hav- ing won the Frontier League title, the Beayers then finished second behind I.H.C. in the play- offs. In Section III, Class C play, the team ad- vanced as far as the semi-finals before being de- feated. The team is losing three seniors, but the crop of juniors coming up will make up for this loss. Woodhouse. The 1971 Baseball season was a very disappointing one for the Beaver River Varsity. The Club was mainly a sen- ior ball club that was potentially very strong. As soph- omores, they had compiled a 10-1 junior varsity record. As inexperienced juniors, they sported a 6-9 record. As seniors, prospects looked very promising for league con- tention. But their downfall was in their failure to hit and field in the clutch; generally weak pitching; and inability to jell together as a unit. Hopes for the 1972 Division Championship at this time are quite doubtful. Beaver River is the smallest school in the Frontier League “A Division, and if we are to be in contention for top spot, we need superb effort from our returning lettermen and those boys up from the junior varsity. Expected to head that category are Lynn Zehr, who led the club in batting; Andy Grau, one of the Tri- Captains of the 1971 ball club; and Phil Merry, one of the better outfielders. Row : B. Roggic. This came about even though the team sufTered their first dual meet loss since 1965. Perhaps the team's success was due to this loss. Coming in the opening meet it kindled a spark that became an inferno by season’s end. Sweet revenge came in the League Champions Meet. 1971 saw six new- school records set, including Bruce Pet- zoldt’s stunning ten Hat 100 yard dash in the Sectionals Great sophomores, led by Rick Stuhl. gave abundant prom- ise of things to come. I he season was climaxed by a second place for the all senior 880 yard relay team in the Interclass Meet in a new school record. Bruce Petzoldt was the first recipient of the annual Silverthorne Award given to the outstanding B.R.C.S. Track and Field athlete, graciously donated by Mrs. Holly Silverthorne. Row I: T Meyer. J.
