DREAMS Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow. Langston Hughes BEAVERIAN 1971 BEAVER RIVER CENTRAL SCHOOL BEAVER FALLS, N.Y. DEDICATION BEAVERIAN 1971 The dedication of this year’s Beaverian to Mr. Robert Williams should come as no surprise to anyone. Never before have we, the class of 1971, owed so much to just one person. As class advisor through- out our high school years, Mr. Williams brought success to many of our fore- seeable failures. As advisor to the Year- book Staff, he has shown us how to work harmoniously to produce the lasting memoirs of our high school days in a 2 book—and most important, to be proud of it. Yet Mr. Williams has gone on to ben- efit the whole school as a coach. As John Gardener once said, “Some people strengthen the society just being the kind of people they are.” We feel it is only fit- ting that in dedicating this year’s Beave- rian to Mr. Robert Williams we may repay a trifling portion of the debt we owe him. 3 SINCE TEENAGERS ARE TOO OLD TO DO THE THINGS KIDS DO AND NOT OLD ENOUGH TO DO THE THINGS ADULTS DO, THEY DO THE THINGS NOBODY ELSE DOES. - Anonymous 4 5 6 SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO BE OUT ON A LIMB BEFORE THEY’LL TURN OVER A NEW LEAF. —Franklin P. SENIORS 13 IN MEMORIAM The Senior Class of 1971 pays tribute to Jerry Martin, a classmate for nine years. J 29 CLASS HISTORY Our years at Beaver River have been very little differ- ent from anyone elses, but they hold a special value for each of us. Those of us who started right here at the sand box level heartily welcomed additional classmates from Father Leo Memorial School. It seems the dream of any class on its way through high school is to end up with a lot of money—ours was no different. Our most strategic move was in ninth grade when we voted Mr. Williams in as our class ad- viser. Our first proposition was a dance. Fortunately bands were much cheaper then and w'e made a small profit with respect to money, but fared very well in gaining experience. Car washes never made it very big around here, but we all seemed to have a special knack for selling and could talk a leg off of anybody. First we tried selling stationary and did quite well. Next we moved to the traditional magazine drive and the sales reports proved some of us could talk pretty fast. Bake sales seemed to be very common, but availed us little as we many times literally ate up the profits. All classes have dark days and we believe ours came when the Sen- iors asked us, as Juniors, to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom. Our brightest days were yet to come when we set out to tackle a $1600 proposition—the W.W.V.A. show. Again our salesmanship paid off and we made a consid- erable profit from the efforts of some of the class. After some negotiation between Seniors and the Adminis- tration. the “Last Word” finally granted us a Senior Ac- tivity Room. We feel very indebted and would like to thank all who were involved. 1...2...3...4...2...2...3...4... echoed all over the fields of Beaver River this last fall as our great- est Football team trained and readied itself for our best season ever in eleven man football. Many of the team members were seniors. With an ear to the ground, the distant sound of pattering feet could also be heard from the League winning Cross Country team. Here also we had many returning seniors. This was by no means the end as tradition was carried on to the mats by a fine bunch of grapplers who opened up with a promising season. Even the basketball (hoop) players opened up with good prospects. Baseball has many of its starters back and Track seems to have its old winning team back. It took us many years of some defeat and some triumph to get to where we are now. We will always have fond memories of the life we had at Beaver River and with some regret look forward with optimism to the life the future holds for us. 30 VOCATIONAL SCHOOL Both business and college bound students attend half-day sessions at the new vocational center in Glenfield. The students prepare for college, busi- ness life, and vocational pursuits. The training en- ables each student to see and understand their 32 work. The subjects are not easy, students must learn to cope with many problems. Despite the di- vided time, the vocational school is increasing its enrollment and adding new subjects each year. Visit the new center and see for yourself. 33 EDUCATION IS DISCIPLINE FOR THE ADVENTURE OF LIFE.—Alfred North Whitehead FACULTY 34 FACULTY Muriel H. Hynes — Mathematics — B.S., SUC Oswego. Beaver River Central’s cross-country teams have been powers in central and northern New York. This year was no exception. The varsity placed first in two major invitationals, second in the Stone Jug Meet and second in the Section III Championships. The J.V.s and Mini- Beavers showed great promise with some junior high individuals turning in some startling performances. The cross-country teams of the future at Beaver River will be traditional—teams to be reckoned with. 46 47 VARSITY FOOTBALL Row I: Manager Bob Chamber- lain. Terr)' Kieffer, Andy Lehman. In sports at Beaver River, this year has undoubtedly belonged to the football team. This past season. Beaver River rose from a mediocre finish last year to first place in the B-Division and a near win in the League Championship against I.H.C. The 1970 football team was perhaps the best balanced in school history, pos- sessing a very aggressive offense and a ruthless defense. The team placed eleven members on the Frontier League All-Star Team. This fact alone illustrates the abil- ity of the team as a whole. Eric Clemons was recipient of the first annual B. D. Bramhall Award which is given to the outstanding player of the team. In analyzing Beaver River’s sudden football prowess, do not forget the new head coach, Mr. Bob Norcross, and assist- ant coach, Mr. Joe Perry, who helped give the team its best season ever. 48 Row I: B. Originally expected to be a rebuilding year for Coach Gior- dano, following the loss of three starters, from last season, 1970-71, has turned out to be a very successful season. Led by Co-Capts. Paul Schamback and Jack Bushey, the team took sev- eral successive wins and was quickly established as a top con- tender for league honors. As we go to press, the team’s record is 9-3 with several games left to play. At this stage of the season, everyone’s attention is focused on the play-offs and the sectionals. Whatever the outcome, the team has already made a fine showing. The hard work and enduring ef- forts of both coach and team are evident from this year’s fine rec- ord. The 1970-71 basketball team surely measured up to the high standards established by previous teams. Row I: J. Monnat, E. Fredenburg. J. Steria. D. Nortz, P. Company, D. Spencer. M. Walseman, W. This is the first year in Beaver River history that a wrestling team has had a winning season. Encountering extremely tough competition, with many teams well-endowed with experienced seniors, the Beaver River squad managed a 6-5-1 record with a rel- atively young team. This year’s fine effort will give the team’s main con- tingent, which consists primarily of sophomores and juniors, added incentive to come back with an even stronger showing next year. We know that the wrestling team will continue on in the winning tradition of Beaver River athletics. BEAVER RIVER OPPONENT 13 Indian River 37 33 Copenhagen 23 26 Carthage 26 27 S. Lewis 21 30 G. Although they have con- sistently produced tough competition for league op- ponents, the team members have yet to attain the domi- nance they desire. Requiring a combination of skill, speed, and very fast reflexes, tennis is a sport which requires dedication and persistance, something all the team members have exhibited. 53 Row 1: P. Duflo, T. Unbeaten in dual meet competition for the past several seasons, and consistently tough in sectional meets, there are few people in the surrounding area who have not heard of the Beaver River track team. In the past, it has placed members on track teams belonging to Princeton, University of Maryland, and Rutgers. In addition, it is responsible for several sectional records. Perhaps the best explanation for the success of the team has been Coach Pete Wallack, who no matter what the turnout each March, always manages to produce an outstanding team, year after year. 54 BEAVER RIVER OPPONENT 98 Belleville 32 97 Carthage 34 112 Indian River 15 95 Lowville 36 89 South Jefferson 42 Sectional III Relay Carnival—3rd Frontier League Meet—1st Sectional III Track Field Championships—3rd Row I: Coach Williams, J. The baseball team, under Coach Les- ter, although certainly having its share of troubles, closing up with a 6-9 season last year, must be given credit for a fine effort. Last year however must be considered a rebuilding year. With many fine soph- omores and juniors to choose from to fill the gap created by graduated team mem- bers Zehr. This year, the school and community were able to see the “Sound of Music,” as presented by the club. Although some questioned the possibility of producing such an awesome play as this, the directors and club members responded by presenting what many people feel was the finest production ever staged at Beaver River. “The Sound of Music,” a Broadway musical and movie sensation which required a high level of singing and acting talent was indeed a serious undertaking for all involved. Necessitating many hard nights of practice, the play resulted in three out- standing and well-received performances. We sincerely hope that this newly established tradition of annual musicals is con- tinued. for it is an event which is anticipated by students and district residents alike. 74 Rogers and Hammerstein’s THE SOUND OF MUSIC Maria Rainer. . .
