He completes his lirst full year as principal of Beaver River Central School in this, our graduating year. Mr. Chamberlain joined the faculty of Beaver River Central School in September, 1959. For four years he taught social studies, English, seminar work and earth science in the Junior-Senior High School. For two of these years he was transportation supervisor for the school system and for one year he was vice-principal. In September of 1963 he became full-time vice-princi- pal, succeeding Mr. Kirch who became full-time guid- ance director. He also continued as transportation su- pervisor. After graduation from Copenhagen Central School in 1940, Mr. Chamberlain enrolled in Crane Depart- ment of Music at Potsdam State University College. Military service as a lieutenant in the Marines with duty in the Far East interrupted his college training. Upon his return to the United States, he entered Franklin and Marshall college, from which he was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Educa- tion. He also holds a Master's degree from St. Lawrence University. In 1951 he was recalled to active duty with the Marine Corps. After his tour of duty, he worked as a salesman for the New Holland Machine Company. In 1956 he became a partner in Croghan Motor Sales, and in 1959, began his service at Beaver River Central School. Larry M. Corey Assistant Principal Mr. Corey became assistant principal of Beaver River Central School in January 1964. Mr. Corey as- sumed his new duties as assistant principal at midyear about one month after Mr. Chamberlain became prin- cipal. Mr. Corey is a native of Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in June 1955. In 1959 he graduated from the State University College in Oswego with the degree of Bachelor of Science. Since that time Mr. Corey has continued to take graduate work at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he is matriculating for a Master's degree. Mr. Corey did his practice teaching in Marion Cen- tral School, Marion, New York, and Homer Central School, Homer, New York. He began teaching in Sep- tember, 1959, at Bolton Landing in the field of Indus- trial Arts and Driver Education. Mr. Corey came to Beaver Falls in September, 1961, and became Junior- Senior High School Industrial Arts instructor. Mr. Corey remained in this position until his appointment as Assistant Principal to succeed Mr. Chamberlain. Dedication Pierre H. Wallack The graduating class of 1965 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Pierre Wallack who has won the respect of both students and faculty members in only two years at Beaver River Central School. Our class feels that we have come to know Mr. Wallack not only as teacher, class advisor and coach but also as a friend. We are sure that his influence on us and future classes will be lasting. 3 Board of Education ROW I Clayton E Vrrlder, Vice Prgsidgnff Donald Hirsch, A. J. It is a group elected by local citizens that can air varying points of view in formulating school policy. It is responsible for school property, supervises the spending of money, and employs school teachers. The improvement of our' school system depends upon the quality of our School Board. Participating in the festival as soloists were Karen Virkler, Sandra Schwendy, and Rebecca Phillips. Two new select vocal groups which have been formed this year are Tri-Trio and the Choraliers. The latter was a featured part of an exchange concert program at Lowville in January. Several members of the Senior Chorus were chosen to take part in the Lewneida League Festival at Old Forge and the North Central Zone Festival at Lowville. The chorus continues to work toward its goal of acquiring choir robes for use in future years. The 1964-65 band began its activities for the school year by playing at the home football games. In December the band and choruses combined in presenting a Christmas Concert which was well received by the public, all are looking forward to a successful spring concert. 24 9 ROW I: Elsie Lehman. Since we had so many members in the chapter, we divided into three groups that met different eighth periods. The groups, which rotated every three months, worked on the fol- lowing projects: Money making, program and service. In October we participated in the Fall Area Rally at which time Sally Lehman was elected Area Chairman for next year. In addition, with the F.F.A., we held a game night for members and guests. Through the annual Tag Day, the donations from local citizens and industries, and the repayment of former loans, the fund has been able to assist many graduates. Service Walk together, talk together, O ye people of the earth, then and only then shall ye have peace. This is the basic philosophy behind the American Field Service. In past years, it has been our good fortune to sponsor foreign students in local homes. This current school year started on a dis- couraging note for the Beaver Falls Chapter, when Guntekin Berkkurt, a young man from Turkey, withdrew his application from the program. It is our hope that at least one of the several students who have applied from this ,school for the American Abroad program will be selected. We are hope- ful, too, that a family representing Beaver River Central School will be host- ing a student during the 1965-66 school year. 'r National Honor Society LaVerne A. ROW II: Shirley Mattis, John Shamback, Paul Kuhl. 31 For several years the Student Council worked to form a National Honor Soci- ety in our school in order to give recog- nition to those who maintained high scholastic averages throughout the four years of high school. In 1962-1963, Robert Carnie, President of Student Council, an d a committee-George Boger, Robert Kieffer and Robert Yousey-drafted a constitution. The Na- tional Honor Society issued a charter for the LaVerne A. Norton Chapter in June 1963, named in honor of Mr. Norton, who, prior to his retirement in January 1964, had been principal of Beaver River Central School for thirteen and a half years. Last year, for the first time, nine members of the Senior Class were selected charter members of the LaVerne A. Norton Chapter. The induction cere- mony was conducted by a team from the Society Chapter of Lowville Academy. The charter members were: Rebecca Phillips, presidentg Elizabeth Gilbert, vice-presidentg Lena Yousey, secretary, Susanne Skriver, treasurer, Sharon Mon- nat, Susan Ford, Stanley Moshier, Rob- ert Yousey, and Paul Lehman. This year the induction ceremony was conducted by the charter members on December 21, 1964, at a special assem- bly. The new inductees were Shirley Mat- tis, presidentg Paul Kuhl, vice president: Cynthia Wetterhahn, secretary, John Schamback, treasurerg and Elaine Marolf. The Society looks upon education as a total product, measured by the four di- mensions of life: scholarship, leadership, character and service. To be eligible one must have completed his junior year, be working for a Regents diploma and have a three-year scholastic average of at least eighty-eight percent. The promotion and establishment of the LaVerne A. Norton chapter of the National Honor Society is one of the ma- jor accomplishments of the Student Council. This year we look for solid performances from veterans Bob Dawson, Gary Kohler, Don Kaler, Mike Wool- schlager and promising newcomers Don Lehman, Dick Yousey, Dan Payberg, Larry Mosher and Mike Co- lombo. One of last year's veterans, Wendy Kuhl, went on this summer to earn the Distinguished Expert award for rifie-the highest award given by the National Rifle Association. Cross Country Fall 1964 The varsity Orange and Green harriers in their sec- ond season led by Captain Erling Hansen served no- tice on North Country high schools that they are a force to be reckoned with.
