Beaver High School is no exception. Each November, when our football team meets the Rochester Rams, another game is added to the chain which spans over forty years. Hand in hand with this game go the Old Oaken Bucket, and the classic Rochy pep meeting. The design for our class rings is a tradition dating back to 1941, and a twenty-three-year-old tradition, Mayday, was culminated this year. The name Shingas itself is a tradition which was started in the 1920's. Before that, it was simply called the Annual . The tradition which most a'FFects and identi- ties Beaver High however, is that of the Bobcat. Not only is Bobcat a name for our football team, but it also is the symbol of our school spirit- enthusiasm, independence, and pride. It has only been during the last seven years that these ideals have been given tangible form. This came about in the creation ot the live Bob- cat, and even though he is only a senior boy in a furry gray suit, he is the symbol of all that the tradition of the Bobcat stands for. Six boys have thus far served as Bobcat. The first was Dan Edgar, who was Bobcat in 1959 and 1960. Then in succession came Dave Shoup, Jim Hagarman, Bob Heddleston, Dave Morton, and Dave Sebastian. The tradition ofthe Bobcat has figured heavi- ly in the cover of this year's Shingas. On the back cover is a raised picture of the Bobcat, the symbol of Beaver High School. Our lives for the past three years have revolved around this sym- bol and it is with great pride that we present it upon this, the 1965 SHINGAS. 3 f 5 by S Q Dedicated to: Throughout our years in high school, we students come in contact with many teachers, a few of whom we will remember all of our lives for their leadership, their originality, and their inspiration. These few have managed to stop us on our merry way and give us something to think about-an ideal to achieve--a goal to reach. Such has been the inspiration of the person to whom we wish to dedicate our Shingas. Our selection this year is a teacher who was born near Bristol in Scott County, Virginia. She attended Pocahontas High School where her father was principal. She maintained a straight-A average and served as a cheerleader and president of her senior class. When she was seventeen, her mother died and she was left to care for a younger brother and three younger sisters while commuting to Virginia Inter- mont College in Bristol. From there she went to Richmond Polytechnic Institute where she maiored in pharmacy. She met her husband, who was stationed in a Virginia naval camp, and transferred to Geneva Col- lege to continue her education-this time in chemistry. She and her husband have been living in Beaver since 1955. They have two young sons, Jim and Tom, and are looking forward to another addition in the very near future. Her interests are many and varied. While her greatest enthusiasm centers in her teaching, her school spirit is felt very deeply and her pep and encouragement support our teams in defeat or victory. An- other interest is in the field of music, where she enioys playing the piano. Her performance in teacher-science programs attended during summer vacations has earned her high honors. She is a conscientious teacher who has the rare capability of pre- senting chemistry as the challenge of a new adventure which leads to a worthwhile future. It is with great respect and admiration that we, the class of 1965, dedicate our Shingas to mf' 'Sf ii I pam Q .wsn-mv wr Mfweifw-1 mu .M , ml.-W QL, 12 ' ' Q 5 5. 1 -, I ' . He guided the sophs in the planning of the highly successful football cl a n c e , Twilight Touchdown, and always had a ready ear for their problems. Mr. CanteImi's academic duties are the teaching of Me- chanical Drawing l and ll, senior busi- ness English, and Metal Shop. i l' i a l ii lf t Senior Sponsor ln the years ahead, when each member of this year's Senior Class remembers his last year at Beaver High School, we will all have a dif- ferent memory to cherish. Among these things will be the senior dance, the Shingas, and the senior candy sale. When we recall these events, we are sure to think of Mr. Thomas Cochran, the Senior class sponsor. Mr. Cochran has given un- selflshly of his time to make our Senior year the success it has been and the wonderful memory that it will surely be to us all. lt is with great pleasure that we stop here and say to you, Mr. Cochran: thanks for a job well done! W--....,,, Junior Sponsors Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Betty Sue Schaughency and Mr. Bruce Webb, the junior class had a very successful year. Through the ef- forts of every member, the class topped all pre- vious records in magazine sales. Mrs. Schaugh- ency and Mr. Webb guided the class through their main project, the prom, which was a de- light and ci headache for all concerned, entailing hours of planning, preparation, and hard work. The Class of T965 wishes the juniors much suc- cess in their final year at Beaver High School, and thanks Mrs. Schaughency and Mr. Webb for helping to make this junior class one of the most successful. McMillan to co-ordinate these activi- ties under one efficient organization. Al- though he is rarely seen at any of the schools, he is always behind the scenes working tirelessly. Whether he is plan- ning a program to improve the schools or investigating new educational proce- dures, he ceaselessly endeavors to make a system of unexcelled quality. We, the class of 1965, feel that thus far he has succeeded admirably in his purpose. ln this space, we would like to publicly ex- press our appreciation 'For the education he has made available to us. -If u vu ewif' 1413 DR. C. B. McMIlLAN MISS RUTH JOHNSTON MRS. LOIS HAGERTY Dr. William L. Charlesworth The principal of a high school is regarded as its backbone. No other person in the school has as much responsibility and authority. Dr Charles- worth has endeavored to make Beaver High School the best school in the county, with ad- mirable results. lt is common knowledge that this year was an important one to our school. On March 16, 'I7, and 18, our school was evaluated by a team of educators 'From all over the state. The guiding hand behind this evaluation was Dr. Charlesworth. He served as general chairman and organizer, calling very frequent meetings to check processes, functions, and results. The credit for overseeing the punctual completion of the massive self-evaluation also goes to him. In addition to these behind-the-scenes duties, he played host to the evaluating team during their stay here. We of the senior class wish to commend him for a most successful and rewarding year. 4, XM-at 'ig 19:5 ' .. . ,.. - ,Ag- ia A ..55::.g:x:..3g . fl .g:'Es 'f W Mr. Donald Higbee Be it a hole-in-one, a burned out proiection bulb, a football or basketball game, you will always find Mr. Higbee on the scene. Through individual sched- ule conferences and personal interviews, each student's likes and talents are revealed. Mr. Rogers holds conferences with the sophomores and most of the iuniors, arriving at a desirable schedule for each one. Mrs. Cook works pri- marily to place every senior after graduation. Her efforts to attain scholarships, secure cid- vanced placement, and insure admission to ac- credited colleges are untiring. Findings show that over ninety per cent of the graduating sen- iors are placed in jobs, colleges, nursing and business schools, and vocational institutions. Crumrine, Vice-President, Larry Haddad, Secretary-Treas- urerp and Gary Kolb, Chaplain. Shingas Producing a Shingas takes the combined tal- ents of many people. Outlining the procedures, setting time tables and planning the general lay- out must be undertaken before the first picture is taken. Since the Shingas is referred to as a pictorial history of one year in Beaver High, it follows that the enclosed pictures must be carefully planned and attractively arranged. Then the copy must be written, using originality and thought. Combining these two phases really makes the book. Other proiects, however, are equally neces- sary. Selection of a cover which will be attrac- tive, well designed and in general conformity with the contents is very important. The book is produced with the idea of reflecting the person- ality of the Senior Class and the entire school year. A dedicated sales staFf must be chosen who will cover the Senior and Junior High as well as the community. The job of the editors-to plan, to coordinate, and to manage the construction of the Shingase plus the contractual work for the pictures, en- graving, printing, and covers, result in the pre- sentation of a book which will be acceptable to all. Jones has spent his time making the Beaver High School Band one of the best anywhere, and it received its clue recognition when it was invited to perform at the New York World's Fair on May l3, 1965. The band presents some of its repertoire during the half-time shows at each football game. This year, the band's mighty influence even spread to basketball, as a group of band members were chosen to play at home games. Other activities of the band are the annual spring concert-this year on May 16-and the band banquet. Again this year, senior members were honored with gray blazers. We would like to thank Mr. Jones and our band for adding yet another reason-and this a large one-why we can be truly proud of our school. 78 VVUF5. To our dismay, however, they did not perform up to their capability until the second half of the Midland game, which ended in a 7-7 tie. The Bobcats' best performances were at the Hopewell and Monaco games. The boys de- feated Hopewell largely by sheer determination, and then beat Monaco in revenge for last year's defeat. The traditional Old Oaken Bucket and the M.A.C. co-championship were resting on the out- come of the Rochester game. Happily, the Bob- cats emerged victorious, and Beaver claimed the bucket for the fourth consecutive year. 86 COACHES. Through this sport he demonstrated his quality of sportsmanship, and by serving as Student Council President he proved himself a fine leader. Kay Lewis was a member of the Beaver High School Class of 1947, and an excellent athlete both in high school and college. After his death, his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers set up this award, to be given to the senior boy who characterizes the highest quality of sportsmanship and leadership in varsity and intramural athletics. The committee which selects the recipient consists of the various coaches, Mr. Paul Jones, Mr. Donald Higbee, Dr. William Charles- worth, and two senior boys who do not participate in athletics. We, the Class of 1965, wish to congratulate you, Ned, the eleventh recipient of the Kay Lewis Award. Jones Awards L. tc R.: Ned Russell, Mr. Morrow, Mr. Kane, Mr Jones Dennis Hromiko. PAUL JONES AWARD Dennis Hromika was the recipient of the Paul Jones Award for 1964. Denny was a valuable asset to our basketball and football teams, and served his school faithfully for three years. The Paul Jones Award was inaugurated three years ago by the Basketeers, a group of parents of basketball players. The award is named for Mr. Paul Jones, the recreation director of the Beaver Area. Mr. Jones is often considered Beaver's Mr. Sports, and it is an honor to receive an award in his name. The award is a partial scholarship to the college the recipient will attend. Denny was the third winner of the Paul Jones Award, and he certainly showed all the qualifications for this award. Denny, the class of 1965 wishes to congratulate you. 100 Helen Hall Betsy Reynolds Colleen Vlochos Front Row, L. to R.: K. Lewis, T. Rose, B. Sfouf, A. Knopp. 2nd Row: H. Hall, C. Vluchos, B.
