Pmerick 3 Foreword The purpose ot a high school yearbook is to present, through pictures and words, a cross-section ot the high- lights ot the school year. The T963 SHINGAS has been compiled and edited by the Senior Class with that obiec- tive, as well as a desire to present an interesting and attractive record ot our last year in Beaver High School. The memories ot a high school career are many and var- ied. We will always remember the pep meetings, as- semblies, dances, report cards, football and basketball teams, club meetings, our 1963 SHINGAS, and gradua- tion, as the pertect finishing touch to our high school education. In presenting the SHINGAS we should like to call attention to this tact-in 1923 the title SHINGAS was adopted as the name ot Beaver High School's annual. It has been used consistently ever since. We are happy to continue this name, tor this, the 'Forty-first edition. In tact, it you are interested in the meaning ot the title SHINGAS . . . it is the Indian word tor Beaver. We present the 1963 SHINGAS . . . Contents Faculty . Classes . Activities . Athletics . Junior High . History is replete with men whose leadership, character and personality have left deep impres- sions on mankind. Whether in politics, social work, science, economics or athletics these con- tributions are of lasting value. Their influence is felt in every walk of life from the oldest to the youngest. Many times this inf1uence determines a pattern of life for some boy or girl. We believe that the person to whom we are dedicating this SHINGAS is such a person. As a student in Beaver High School, Geneva College or in Franklin-Marshall College his ma- jor interest was in athletics. To him, athletics is a Way of Life , whether it be in active participa- tion in any given sport, coaching, officiating or with a strong desire to help a boy become a bet- ter athlete. Next to earning a living for himself and his family, this hos been the driving force of his life. Using every available minute, not essen- tial to the conduct of his business, to lead, to en- courage and to counsel boys land yes-many girlsl to become better athletes, to meet competi- tion with greater confidence, his influence has been felt by a myriad of boys and girls in the Beaver Area over the past 35 years, and, we hope, will continue to be felt through many, many more. To describe his many exploits adequately would take more space than is available. Suffice it to enumerate a few highlights of his varied career. He earned letters in four sports while in high school and in two major sports-football and baseball in college. ln his baseball playing days he was an outstanding shortstop for several local and district teams, earning a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has been an assistant football coach, baseball coach, organizer and manager of many baseball teams from 12 year olds to Junior Legion. CHis 1952 Knee-hi team was state championj. He has supervised Senior and Junior High B.A.C. and the O.S.Y. program and at present is under appointment as the Rec- reational Director for the Beaver Area Schools. In all he has given over 35 years of dedicated effort as coach, director, and instructor to the youth of our communities. As we review the requirements of service, loyalty, leadership and lasting influence not only to the schools lout to the community as well, we can think of no one who is better qualified, no one who has exerted a more profound influence for good, clean living and hard but clean compe- tition in athletics. We, the class of 1963, humble as we stand in awe of this leader of youth, proud to have been his student and friend, take extreme pleas- ure in dedicating and presenting our SHINGAS to: MR. McMillan. While State law and the Board of School Directors establish the broad general policies, it is incumbent upon him to see that these policies are carried out throughout the entire school system. Although we see him only on occasion we know that it is not from neglect, but because his duties keep him engaged in all manner of adminis- trative activity. We appreciate the fact that his influence is, at all times, being exercised to provide us with the best in education. For all his efforts, as well as those of Mr. John McClements, Miss Ruth Johnston, and Mrs. Virginia Hawkins, we express our sincere thanks and appreciation. Class of 1963 - ifffitlfel DR. CHANDLER B. Never too busy to talk over our problems, offer advice and counsel, and suggest ways and means of finding answers to our problems, Mrs. Cook renders a service of immeasurable value to all of us. So also does Mr. Rogers offer counsel to the underclassmen. The class of 1963 would like to express its deep appreciation to these two for their untiring efforts in our behalf. Mr. Frank H. In this our last year in Beaver High School, we depended on a man of extreme insight and dedication to lead our class and make it the success it was. He spent many long hours working with committees and indi- viduals, keeping our class in the black and making the hallowed halls remem- ber the young men and women of 1963 for many years to come. A native of Monaca, Mr. Glass was educated in the public schools before attending Geneva College and the University of Pittsburgh from which he received his A.B. degree and M.Litt. degree respectively. Following a number of years as teacher in the Monaco Public Schools he was affili- ated with the Western and Southern Insurance Company. He came to Beaver in the fall of 'l955. Any one who knew or associated with Mr. Glass could not fail to be affected by his sense of humor, his happy carefree demeanor, and his ability to have fun even under the most trying situations. While we in Beaver will have cause to remember Mr. Glass for his many character- istics, students of Monaco High will have more cause to remember, as he left the bulk of his estate to be used for scholarship grants to worthy students of his home town. At the present writing, plans are being formulated by the Student Council, to place a suitable memorial in the halls of the high school in honor of Mr. Glass. We are sorry to have lost our friend but feel that in this small way we can remember him in the future years through the pages of our SHINGAS. To accomplish these, self-discipline must be strongly exercised by all members. Membership in the Hi-Y is open to any soph- omore, junior or senior boy who feels that he can qualify. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Taylor, the group goes bowling twice a month and plays basketball weekly. The Hi-Y also sponsors the high school Ping Pong Tournament. This year's officers are: George Clark, presi- dent, Al Homesley, vice president, and Joe Brown, secretary-treasurer. Tri- '-Y High Christian standards of conduct in the home, school, and community is the most impor- tant objective of the Tri-Hi-Y. Projects designed to develop these standards and work for greater Christian services in the community were planned and carried out by the members this year under the direction of the sponsor, Mrs. Mary Haskins. Money collected from the sale of mums was used to send four delegates to the Tri-Hi-Y con- ference at Butler, Pennsylvania, as well as mak- ing Christmas favors for the patients in the Roch- ester General Hospital. Cascio-Mgr. 62 8 WELLSVILLE Beaver opened its T962 grid season on the seventh day of September. Little did Coach John Berdell's men know that they were in for the toughest night of the season. Their op- ponents were eleven young men from Wellsville, Ohio. How- ever, the scrappy 'Cats were able to edge the visitors from across the state line by a slim T3-7 margin. The Bobcats made their tirst score of the night on a Denny Hromika to Ed Rose pass midway through the second quarter. The second half found Beaver and Wellsville each scoring one T.D., and the Bobcats walking off with victory number one in the '62 cam- paign. Beaver 'I3 - Wellsville 7. EAST PALESTINE One week later the Beaver Bobcats extended their win skein to eleven over the past two seasons with a 19-O victory over the tough East Palestine Bulldogs. Senior captain Don Morton climaxed the 'Cats first T.D. drive by plunging over from the Bulldog T. The first half ended with the Bobcats enjoying a 7-0 advantage. Charley Bell and Morton ran rampant over the Bulldog defense in the second stanza as they accounted for Beaver's two second half T.D.'s. The victor's offense totaled 233 yards while the defense was holding the Ohioans to a meager 72 yards. Beaver T9 - East Palestine 0. MIDLAND Headed by Don Morton, the Beaver cleoters toppled a gang of fired-up Midland Leopards by a 20-0 count on Sep- tember 2'l. Morton rushed for 93 of the Bobcats' T50 total yards gained. Time and time again he ripped the Midland defense for gains of six and seven yards. lniury ridden sen- iors Mike Christner and Don Stilley made their initial appear- ances of the season, and were instrumental in the much im- proved play of the Bobcat club. Halfbacks Ed Rose and Greig Berkley also turned in commendable performances in the Bob- cat rout. Beaver 20 - Midland O. HOPEWELL An explosive ground attack enabled the County-seaters to extend their win streak to T3 at the expense of the ever- rough Hopewell Vikings. The game got oFf to a fast and furi- ous start when Charley Bell recovered a Viking fumble of the fourth play from scrimmage. Moments later Ed Rose con- verted Hopewell's miscue into six big points. The third quar- ter found the Bobcats on the dangerous side of their 30 yard stripe for the entire period. Things began to look less than good as the Norsemen tallied T.D. number one for the evening and were able to pocket the extra point to take a 7-6 lead. However, the Berdellmen were not to be denied as they pulled the game out with an early fourth quarter score and a T2-7 victory. Beaver T2 - Hopewell 7. Beaver vs. Wellsville Beaver vs. Monaco NEW BRIGHTON Gypsy Glen Stadium was the place this week. A iam- packed crowd saw four quarters of tight and hard fought football and when it was all over the New Brighton Lions found themselves on the short end of a 7-O count. The Lions were weakened by the first quarter iniury of star halfback Jim Hutkay, but they never stopped fighting. Beaver back Greig Berkley put in his finest show of the season as he blazed trails through the tough Brighton line with little apparent diffi- culty. Don Morton provided the most spectacular note of the evening as he dodged and danced past four Lion blockers to make an ankle tackle on a seemingly T.D. bound Brighton halfback. Beaver's lonesome end, Charley Bell, caught a Denny Hromika pass and raced to paydirt for the game's lone score. Beaver 7 - New Brighton 0. FREEDOM It was Beat 'Em Bobcats time again this Saturday night as the 'Cats chalked up win number six for the season and extended their streak to 15 over the past two years. Coach Berdell's powerful football machine started slowly scoring iust once in the first quarter, but gained momentum in the second period when they hit paydirt three times for a 26-O half-time lead. End Don Stilley sparked the offense with a T.D. pass reception and also demonstrated his versatility by intercepting a Bulldog aerial. When the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard read: Beaver 39 - Freedom 6. NORTH ALLEGHENY A Beaver High football team that looked like the unde- feated 1961 Bobcat eleven ruined North Allegheny's Home- coming Day festivities by trouncing the Class AA Tigers, 26A6 Safurday afternoon, October 19. Charley Bell played havoc wiih the dumbfounded Bengal defenders as he sped by them on back to back punt returns of 62 and 30 yards. Don Mor- ton, Charley Bell, Ed Rose, and Greig Berkley all put in their six points worth in the Bobcat triumph. Defensive specialist Dick Melkerson split the uprights twice on this sunny after- noon as he added two conversion points. Beaver 26 - North Allegheny 6. Beaver vs. Wellsville MONACA On Saturday, October 26th, the Bobcat cleaters scalped a hapless bunch of Monaca Indians on the Red Men's land. Denny Hromika was iniured in the first half and was replaced by sophomore signal-caller Bill Phillips. Phillips performed admirably under tough conditions as he led the 'Cats to a 32-13 victory. Dazzling Don Morton electrified the crowd in the second half by bursting through the Indian line on his own two yard stripe and sprinting for a total of 97 yards before being pulled down on the Monaca one. Despite the fact that the Bobcats didn't throw a pass for the entire con- test, they put on a show that the Monaca people won't forget for many moons. Beaver 32 - Monaca 13. ROCHESTER Beaver rocketed from a 6-6 half-time deadlock to trounce their cross-river rivals from Rochester to the tune of 27-6. The win lengthened the 'Cats win skein to 18. Dependable Don Morton carried the pigskin 17 times for 95 yards while Ed Rose carried thirteen times for 79 yards. Quarterback Denny Hromika and tackle Mike Christner stifled Rochy drives with timely pass interceptions. The contest featured fine runs by Morton, Berkley, and Rose, coupled with aggressive line play by defensive stalwarts Hazen Wilson, Mike Christner, and Don Stilley. And so the '62 campaign ended on a highly success- ful note for Coach Berdell and his Battling Bobcats. Beaver 27 - Rochester 6. Hull LeT's hex Rochester Q 1 Ka ewis Award Kay Lewis, a member of the class of 1947, was an outstanding varsity and intramural ath- lete in both high school and college. His athletic determination and great sportsmanship so im- pressed his fraternity brothers, that after his un- timely death, they founded the Kay E. Lewis award in his memory. The award was presented annually by the North Carolina chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. However, several years ago the 'Fraternity seemed reluctant to continue the award, so the Beaver High School Student Council assumed the responsibility and now pre- sents it to the senior boy who best characterizes the highest quality of sportsmanship and leader- ship in varsity and intramural athletics. The selection committee is composed of the Beaver High School coaching staff, Paul Jones, representing the intramural program, Mr. Don- ald Higbee, faculty manager, Dr. William Charlesworth, high school principal, and two senior boys who do not participate in athletics. James Sanford was selected by the commit- tee as the T962 recipient of the award. Jim dis- played his athletic prowess, his drive, and lead- ership by participating in varsity basketball, football, and baseball during his three years in Beaver Area Senior High School. The class of T963 would like to congratulate Jim Sanford, the ninth winner of the Kay Lewis award. B. A. C. Row 'l,Lto R: L. Morris, G. Langsdale, R. Gilroy, S. Salopek, J. Lang, M. Lipsitz, L.
