Beaver Area High School Editors-John Caclley, Ellen Lipsifz, Lourene Peugeot Beaver, Pennsylvcmic Managers-Bcarborcl Pcxtferson, Dove Stout Presented by The Class of 1962 Adviser--Mr. W. W. Poferick 3 lt does not happen frequently that one teacher and one class progress through high school together - so to speak. However, such has been our experience as a class with Mr. Cochran, our present sponsor. From ninth grade his teaching assignments have paralleled our class as we moved toward graduation. General Science, Biology, World Cultures, and Physical Science have been taught by him. During each of these years he had members of our class in his home room. This closeness does not stop there. He is and has been associated with many of our classmates as assistant coach in football. He is presently serving as adviser to the Hi-Y club as well as being our class sponsor. Born in Springdale, Pennsylvania, his family moved to the Beaver Area where he attended school. ln the eighth grade he received the American Legion Citizenship Award for outstanding leadership and citizenship. While attending Beaver High School he participated in sports, distinguishing himself in football sufficiently to receive honorable mention on the All-County team. Upon gradua- tion in 1943 he entered the Armed Services and afterwards entered Geneva College from which he received a B.S. degree. While attending Geneva he con- tinued his activity in sports by playing shortstop for one of the county baseball teams. Conway Junior High School provided his first teaching position in the field of education. At the same time he worked for and was awarded a M.Ed. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Returning to Beaver in 1954 he taught in the Junior High School, also assisting and coaching football. He moved to the Senior High in 1956 to teach General Science and Biology, and was appointed assistant football coach. Mr. Cochran is married to the former Miss Mary Reed of Beaver Falls and they are the proud parents of three year old Suzanne. Both are active in the affairs of Chippewa Township where they live and the Chippewa Community Church which they attend. We feel that Mr. Cochran, our class sponsor, is doing an outstanding iob, not only in the classroom, but in developing high ideals of character and sports- manship as well. His winning smile, pleasing personality and keen sense of humor endears him to all who come to know him. It is therefore with a great deal of pride and deep appreciation of his services to the school, the sports program, our class and to us as individuals that we, the class of 1962, dedicate our Shingas to - MR. Just as men have celebrated through the ages, we too of Beaver High welcomed the coming of May with traditional festivities. Under the direction of Mrs. Daneen M. Riggs, the girls' physical education classes presented the Ancient Rites of Spring. The colorful spectacle, including Roman, Voodoo, Chinese, and Persian dancers, was terminated by Greeks and their traditional dance around the Maypole. A perfect accent to the occasion was the rainbow parading of the senior girls. The celebration, of course, was all in honor of our May Queen, the lovely and pert, Miss Christine Dawson. Wherever there were people, there was sure to be Jose, Alex, Ada or Roberto in their midst. From Lima, Peru came our friends Ada Cossio and Roberto Nesta. Ada stayed with Joan Kiefer and Roberto shared the home of Rick Trent. The first student to arrive and leave, was Jose Ramirez who stayed with Dave Patrick. Jose was from Med- ellin, Columbia. Alex Santos, from Pana- ma, the last to arrive, made his home with Greig McClure. Our exchange stu- dents saw many of the sights our coun- try has to offer. They came here on an exchange program in which Dave Pat- rick visited Lima this past summer. We hope Jose, Alex, Ada, and Roberto were as glad to be here as we were to have them. We will always remember the flashing eyes of Ada, the friendly hello of Roberto, the winning personality of Jose. May our exchange program help the relationships between our countries -to be summed up in one word- friendly. While waiting for our chance to be on top, we've contributed a lot to good old B.H.S. Our main project was the prom. The seniors can tell you how much work that is. I bet they didn't envy us any. Late even- ings, lots of preparation and paint made up the prime factors in the planning of the Junior-Senior Prom. Of course, ours was the best yet, Then there was our magazine sale. Did we make money? Our class really topped them all. Mrs. Schaughency and Mrs. George may have had their problems with us, but we made up for them. We had our football players, cheer- leaders, basketball players, track and baseball men, band and chorus members, leaders, and student coun- cil representatives. This school iust couldn't have done without us. Have we proven our value? Definitely. Therefore we take our leave with the words, See you next year! CLASS OFFICERS W, Seyboth, secretary, L. Student Council The 1961-62 Beaver Area Student Council, under the direction of Mr. Frank Rogers, was composed of 33 members--a student-elected president, four representatives-at-large, and the homeroom representatives. Jim Hagarman, president, Joel Wohlgemuth, vice-president, Joyce Kiernan, secretary, and Patty Patterson, treasurer led the student governing body in sev- eral successful projects this year. Among the money-making prciects were the sponsoring of a Thanksgiving homecoming dance and the sell- ing of candy at basketball games. The group assisted the Chamber cf Commerce in making post prom arrangements and also set up a nativ- ity scene during the Christmas season. Council members co-operated with the P.T.A. by acting as guides at open house. The student council acted as an intermediary between the faculty and the student body. lt strived to promote pride in the school on the part of the student body and to train the students in leadership and parlia- mentary procedure. ational onor Socie y Twenty-one highly screened members com- posed the roster of the 1961-62 National Honor Society. Requirements tor membership this year became more stringent. A member must have maintained a B average throughout his high school years and possessed the qualities of lead- ership, service, and character. The maior ob- jectives of the National Honor Society are to promote higher qualities of scholarship, leader- ship, and service, and to develop strength of character. Besides participating in several social activities, members acted as tutors to underclass- men and sponsored a service proiect. Philip Phillips and Sandra Stephens acted as president and secretary-treasurer of the organization. Mrs. Genevieve Hokman was adviser to the group. S. Stephens, Mrs. Hokman, P. Beaver Area High School Ban The T20 piece Beaver Area High School Band has been very busy this year. Mr. R. C. Jones, assisted by Mr. W. Schwarts, struck up the band during every pep rally and football game half-time. Also scheduled were various com- munity activities such as the Geneva Home- coming and a trip to Kennywood Park. Dressed in their new navy-blue uniforms, the band struck a fine note in the Veteran's Day, the Memorial Day, and the Halloween Parade. During the winter, instruments were practiced diligently in preparation for the Spring Concert, which was a huge success. The annual Band Banquet yielded a frolicking time for all who attended. Jones, was composed of 50 interested senior high band members who had Cl definite desire to fur- ther their musical education. In the Wind Ensem- ble members had an opportunity to improve their musical talents by being introduced to more diffi- cult and extensive band literature. This instru- mental group's first performance was the Christ- mas concert at the holiday assembly. Also on the agenda was a trip to the Beaver County Home and Hospital to entertain the elderly pa- tients. ln the spring, the members busily pre- pared for the Invitational Concert, the longest program of the year. Swing Band A one an' a two were words quite frequent- ly uttered by Mr. William W. Schwartz since tak- ing over direction of the Beaver Bop-Cats swing band this year. lts members, including T7 in- strumentalists, Sharon Swingle and Val Brkich as vocalists, thrilled audiences large and small with their excellent renditions of dance melodies. Pro- viding entertainment for the all-school play and presenting several musical selections in the an- nual spring band concert were two important school performances of the swing band. During the year the Bob-Cats performed at Slippery Rock College and Riverside High School. They also furnished four evenings of toe-tapping music for the adult dances sponsored by the Band Mothers. A final and very outstanding concert climaxed the event on Sat- urday evening. Requirement for membership is a recommendation by the high school band di- rector. The Festival selection committee governs instrumentation. Beaver was well represented this year as six of our talentecl student musicians were selected for the 200 piece band. The rnaior obiective of this organization is to provide valu- able musical experience for the skilled high school musician beyond that attainable on the local level. Mid-Western Choruses A group of several Seniors from Beaver Area High School journeyed to New Brighton on April 5 to participate in the Mid-Western District Chorus rehearsals and concerts. An outstanding direc- tor was engaged to conduct these concerts. Beaver Area High School was host to the Regional Chorus of the Mid-Western District on May 3, 4, 5. After intensive rehearsals two con- certs were presented for public entertainment. Mr. John Raymond of Lafayette College was the guest conductor. Get rid of that gum and sit up straight are not unfamiliar words to the ears of Con- cert Choir members. These two phrases are often spoken by Miss Marilyn Werner, our new and pert choral director at Beaver High School. Under her direction the sixty-eight voice choir performed first this year at the Thanksgiving assembly, and shortly afterwards sang gay yuletide selections at both our own Christmas assembly and also at an exchange program with Rochester. A new feature, and we hope the start of a tradition to continue on our school calendar, was a Christmas evening program presented to the public. After Christmas the Con- cert Choir settled down to work on music for the annual Spring Concert which included num- bers from the popular Broadway musical, West Side Story. Sometimes receiving less recogni- tion, but nevertheless worthy of praise, is Beaver High's Girls' Chorus. Also directed by Miss Wer- ner, our forty-six singing maidens performed several songs in the Christmas and Spring Con- cert programs. GIRLS' CHORUS-Row 'I, L to R: G. Reep, C. Headland, S. Deem, B. 'll4 One of the least acknowledged phases of football is the work of the football manager and trainer. All through the season these boys work hard keeping equipment and players in good condi- tion. Their duties range from repairing broken equipment to nursing the bruised and battered bodies of the players. The players may gripe about the easy jobs these boys have, but after a tough prac- tice those rubdowns feel mighty good. Our thanks go to these boys for a iolo well-done. J. Hogan W. T15 Manager Footballs Finest Scenes and Scores SHALER Beaver's Battling Bobcats executed a success- ful debut in their brand-new class AA schedule on Friday evening, Sept. 9, by defeating the Shaler High School Huskies T9-T2 in a game played on the loser's field. The 'Cats were never behind in the contest, as they scored twice in the first quarter and once in the second to take a commanding 19-O lead. Shaler was unable to hit pay-dirt until late in the third stanza, when they passed their way to two quick T.D.'s. EAST PALESTINE On Sept. 16, the charges of Coach John Ber- dell took number two, this time at East Palestine, Ohio, where they trounced the Bulldogs 20-O. Beaver's big line and fast backs seemed to com- plement each other perfectly in this one. Time and again big holes were opened in the Bulldog line, and once Beaver's backs got moving they were unstoppable. The first team sat out most of the second half, allowing the reserves to gain experience. Coaches Mr. Bischoff Mr. Berdell Mr. Cochran MIDLAND Beaver's home opener on Sept. 23 marked the 'Cats third straight, as they defeated a strong Midland eleven by a score of 12-O. The Leop- ards were tough, but Beaver scored twice in the first half and hung on to their slender twelve point margin until the final buzzer sounded. This game marked the second win in two years over the always-troublesome Leopards. HOPEWELL Hopewell was next. Who will ever forget that one? Out-played and outscored for three- and-a-half quarters, and trailing T3-0 with six minutes to play, Beaver took to the air with a new-found passing attack. A long one to end Jim Anderson put the ball on the Hopewell one, where Don Morton carried it over. A short one to Ed Loudon evened things up with only six sec- onds left to play. .lim Sanford's extra point was too close for comfort, but it cleared the bar by inches and the Bobcats had notched their fourth. NEW BRIGHTON On Oct. 6, Beaver traveled to New Brighton where they wrecked the Lions with a 34-6 drub- bing. Keeping in mind the game of the week previous, the Bobcats went at them early, scor- ing twice in each of the first two quarters, to lead at halftime by a comfortable 27-O margin. The Beaver defense played a big part in this one. The Lions were never able to gain consistently on the ground, and time after time the Bobcat sec- ondary plucked New Brighton passes from the air to ruin hopes ofa touchdown through the air- lanes. FREEDOM On Saturday, Oct. 'l4, in their most important game to date, the 'Cats had at the Freedom Bull- dogs in the midst of an autumn downpour, and walked off the field with a surprisingly easy 34-O win under their belts. The Berdellmen played in- spired football and, in spite of the wet field, came up with many spectacular plays. The Bob- cat defense lived up to its reputation by holding the Bulldogs to scant yardage gained, and by MONACA The powerful Bobcats rolled to their eighth straight the next week by defeating the visiting Monaca lndians 37-6. Statistics told the tale as the 'Cats ground out 373 yards against the ln- dians. ROCHESTER November 3 rolled around and Beaver's tra- ditional crossriver rival Rochester was the only team standing between the 'Cats and the first perfect season in the recent school history. The Bobcats apparently realized this and ended their season in a blaze of glory, mauling the hapless Rams, 60-0. forcing several fumbles. This was the sixth straight win against no losses or ties for Beaver. NORTH ALLEGHENY Friday, Oct. 6, just six days later, Beaver en- tertained the North Allegheny Tigers at Gypsy Glen Stadium. The entertainment wasn't of the polite type however, as the Tigers were forced to endure 32-i6 drubbing at the hands of the bigger and more experienced Bobcats. ln win- ning their seventh straight, the 'Cats scored spec- tacularly in the first three quarters, then relaxed in the fourth while the Beaver reserves took over. 117 J. Anderson End J. Sanford Halfbtack T. Brown H. Griffith Center Halfback Down across the years, particularly since the W.P.I.A.L. was organized, sections and classes established, and rigid rules laid down, Beaver High has striven for an undefeated season. Now, in the fall of 1961 our dream has become a reality. Shaler, East Palestine and Midland went down in order. Hopewell almost upset the dream until the last few minutes when our team really came through to win by one point. From here on New Brighton, Freedom, North Allegheny, and Monaca fell before the onslaught of a team that would not give up. With the scent of an undefeated and untied season in their nos- trils our team ran roughshocl over Rochester in the final game for that coveted dream-9 wins, O loses, 0 ties. The entire student body expresses its sin- cere thanks and appreciation to this team- its coaches and managers who have made this long time dream a reality. E. Stewart Tackle D. Mooney Quarterback l. Stuart Football Da nee Ladies cmd gentlemen, we would like to announce the finale of the football season, the 'Final Touchdown'. This was the voice of The sophomore class members as they worked hard to put on Beaver's annual football dance. It is the evening of November TO. The scene opens and in the center of the tioor is an immense oaken bucket with The names of our Team members inscribed on it. Soft lights reflect on The dancers as They turn lazily to the music of Lee Tolfa. The moment has come-enter sceptre bearer Pam Luster, and Dianne Grossglass, crown bearer-then-Her Royal Maiesty, Miss Patty Patterson. Atten- tion is held at the throne as our queen is crowned by honorary captain and her escort, Ed Stewart. Patty and her subiects then danced away the remainder of the Final Touchdown, a fitting tribute to our unde- feated football team. 'I'l9 Beat Rochy! W TU EU VISITU ,L 3 k, X 1 SEESN F? FS v L31 A x. Oops! Not another iump ball! Jump ball, iump ball, get it, get it! Don't those cheerleaders ever let up? The Beaver cheerleaders are picked amid stiff competition in their sophomore year. Pep, looks, personality and ability are the ingredients that make up our cheerleaders. The varsity cheerleading squad consists this year of tour seniors and three jun- iors. Before basketball season our four new sophomore cheerleaders were picked, and are now serving on the iunior varsity squad. Next year they will become varsity cheerleaders. Beaver pep meetings were really sparked this year by the clever minds of our cheerleaders. From the evolution of cheers to Doctor Pep- per's Pep-O-Machine, skit after skit unfolded be- fore our eyes to the great entertainment of all. Cheerleader is a synonym for vim and vigor. We can hand it to ours this year for instilling in us team spirit. Our cheerleaders never give up on the team-therefore, neither does our student body. C Morrow G Vukson M Horst .I Howarth C. The 'Cats lost several close games and had come along enough at midi season to beat the league-leading Aliquippa team which was previously undefeated. He par- ticipated in football and track and his ideals of sportsmanship and conduct made him well liked not only by his teammates but also by his fellow students. The student council has carried on the tradition of the Kay Lewis Award by purchasing the trophy this year. The council took over this project in 1958 when the Sigma Chi Fraternity ot North Carolina discontinued its purchase. The selection ofthe recipient ofthe award is made by all the coaches, Dr. Charlesworth, Mr. Higbee, Mr. Paul Jones and two senior boys who do not participate in athletics.
