Each year your Senior English classes are introduced to Shakespeare, Macbeth and the three witches, and each year they leave with a deeper and richer appreciation of the works of a great man because of your keen and sensitive interpretation of his many characters. While we recognize that Shakespeare is, perhaps, one of your greatest inter- ests, we also know that your other interests are many and varied. Extensive reading, writing poetry, and strumming your ukelele certainly show the breadth of your activities. Born the daughter of a minister, in Topeka, Kansas, you received your ele- mentary and secondary education in many different localities as you accompanied your father in his appointed ministries. For your advanced education Western College in Oxford, Ohio, became your Alma Mater. Following graduation, sev- eral teaching positions gave you your experience before coming to Beaver Area, one of which was in San Juan, Puerto Rico, until illness caused you to return to the states. Later, after marriage to Mr. William Hokman and the raising of a daughter, Jennifer, you returned to your chosen profession by accepting a position in Mid- land High School. When the opportunity presented itself, you transferred to Beaver Area High School-Midland's loss and our gain. Since coming to Beaver you have taught Sophomore as well as Senior English. While directing class plays may be thought of as an extra-curricular activity, you have inspired the casts with the desire to do their best, a good example being this year's Senior Class Play, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners. As sponsor of the National Honor Society you have exercised great influence in raising the stand- ards for admission as well as inspiring members to greater heights of educational achievement before and after graduation from high school. And so to Mrs. Genevieve Hokman, who loves people, particularly young people, who has dedicated her life to educating and helping those young people, whose interests are so many and varied, and who never ceases to demonstrate a rich enthusiasm for her work, we proudly dedicate our Shingas. Class of l96l 6 dedicated to: Mrs. Genevieve Hokman The Board of School Directors proudly presents to you the new Beaver Area Senior High School. Its dedication marks the happy completion of a long-planned step in the development of our public schools. In planning for this new school building, the task was to develop educa- tional specifications to meet the needs of a residential community located in the center of an important industrial area. The task was shared by school board members, authority members, administrators, the teaching staFf, architects, engi- neers, and builders. The new building is modern and functional. It provided facilities to meet the everchanging goals of secondary education. In addition to housing the educational program, the new building pro- vides a center for worthy community activities. It should be a source of continu- ing pride and inspiration to the citizens of the Beaver Area who share in its ownership. Chandler B. And so, we too celebrated the coming of May with the traditional festivities. The girls' gym classes under the direction of Mrs. Richard Riggs presented their adapta- tion of May Day in Old England. While Milk- rnaids, Chimney Sweeps, Hobby Horses, and Robin Hoods danced, the senior girls, whose fresh radiance was a perfect complement to the beauty of spring, provided the beautiful background. The celebration came to an end with the traditional May Pole Dance. Maid of Honor Flower Girls ., Ladies Godiva ride again Crown Bea rer Scepter Bea rer Queen ...,..,....,,.. .. Attendants ...., ,.,. Polio struck Janet when she was in 8th grade. She has been tutored ever since. This year, though, she actually attended B. H. S. from September until Thanksgiving. Although handicapped, Janet is an ex- cellent student and always maintains a cheerful disposition. She is widely read in literature and sci- ence, and an encyclopedia is her constant companion. She is able to type well with the aid of special apparatus. She not only types all of her homework assignments, but also does most of her father's business corre- spondence. She has had some rehabilitation train- ing at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. It erected the Nativity Scene, sold candy at home basketball games, sold plastic yearbook covers, and underwrote the cost of the Kay Lewis Trophy. lts support was given to the P.T.A. and their an- nual Fair . This year, for the first time, the Stu- dent Council sold book covers picturing the new school. lt also provided a medium for exchange of ideas between the sudent body, faculty, and administration. This organization was under the sponsorship of Mr. Frank Rogers. The otticers were: Richard Stilley, President, David Noll, Vice President, Ron- ald Patterson, Treasurer, Joel Wolgemuth, Secre- tary. rl. l1. S. Membership in the National Honor Society is the iustification for outstanding character, leadership, service and schol- arship. Alpha Chapter initiated a new edu- cational concept this year. Members agreed to make themselves available for tutoring services to any student de- siring such. Such fields as English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and For- eign Languages were included in the program. It was felt that such a pro- gram would serve two distinct services- help for those students needing it, and advancing the cause of education in general. Ofticers for the year were: Tom Hied, president, Margaret Yohe, secre- tary-treasurer, Mrs. Genevieve Hokman, sponsor. An excellent opportunity is given in our school to girls who may be interested in the nurs- ing profession, to find out whether or not this is their career. With the help of Miss Fisher, Mrs. Benner and Mrs. Rinehart, the members become acquainted with the various phases of the pro- fession. Visitations by registered nurses, trips to various hospitals, films and proiects helped each of the members. The officers are: Phyllis Walter, President, Bar- bara Patterson, Vice President, and Claudette Snitger, Secretary-Treasurer. The Future Teachers of America is a national organization whose aim is to equip seniors inter- ested in teaching with a fuller understanding of the opportunities, responsibilities, rewards and challenges in the field of education. ln order to fulfill this aim and to give its mem- bers first hand experience the F.T.A. arranged for its members to observe actual teaching conditions and methods right in the classroom, held panel discussions of teaching problems and invited sev- eral speakers to its meetings. The organization was sponsored by Miss Adella Lawson and officers were: Judy Zischkau, President, Penny Hill, Vice President, Karen Clark, Secretary, and Patricia Macon, Treasurer. A I wind ensemble ln November l960 the music department, forthe third straight year, reorganized its instru- mental group known as the Wind Ensemble. This year the Ensemble consisted of 47 members and was directed by Mr. Leslie H. Marietta. The organization made its tirst public appear- ance in December. At that time the Wind En- semble along with the Triple Trio, a girl's choral group, presented a Christmas Program for the Band Parent's Organization. The group played on numerous other occasions: two of which were the Christmas assembly and the dedication of the school. Finally the largest program presented by the Ensemble was that of an invitational con- cert in the spring ofthe year. swing band Dance, anyone? Mellow saxophones, swinging trumpets and trombones, a tinkling piano, and a hot set of drums-this is what makes up the Bopcats, Beaver High School's l7 piece swing band. Under the direction of Mr. Leslie H. Marietta, they have pleased countless numbers with their popular dance tunes. During the year, they supplied the music for two adult dances sponsored by the Band Mothers, one in the fall and another in the spring. Money from these dances was put into the uni- form fund. The Bopcats also provided entertainment be- tween the acts of the class plays and they were featured in the annual spring band concert. SWING BAND Front Row, Lto R: B. Clark, B Listh, P. Brdar, A. New interest has developed in this organization since last year's outstanding Mixed Chorus. The Choir of seventy-two voices is striving to give our school a new and better choir. The new Concert Choir has replaced the Mixed Chorus of preceding years and has shown us what can be achieved in two short years. They have many plans for the future and they have already begun a new tradition of exchang- ing Christmas Programs with Rochester. We should also take notice of two new groups in our music department: Girls' Triple Trio and Boys' Octet. Girls' Chorus was seen in the Spring Concert. , athletics 96 ,- 1 congratulations m. a. Head Coach John Berdell Football banquet decorations 101 Bobcat David Shoup The Old Oaken Bucket is symbolic of good fellowship between the high school students of Beaver and Rochester. Since its inaugural in 1949, it has been a highly sought after prize going to the winner of the annual Beaver-Roch- ester football game. In case of a tie, as in 1950 and 1959, the bucket resides in each school for six months. The Old Oaken Bucket is presently resting in the Beaver Area High School trophy case after this year's Bobcat victory over the Rams by a score of 16-O. lt is hoped that in future years the Bucket will remain in Beaver as a symbol of a Beaver victory over the cross-river rival, Rochester. BEAVER I9 SHALER I3 The Cats capped the lid-lifter of the i960 football season by downing the highly-touted Shaler Huskies. The game, which was marked with long runs by both teams, saw the Bob- cats come from behind Twice before they could claim victory. Beaver scored two touch- downs in the first quarter on a 75 yard punt return by Ed Snitger and a pass from Dave Mooney to Vince Binkoski. The game-winning tally came early in the fourth quarter when Jim Sanford scored from eight yards out. BEAVER 'I2 EAST PALESTINE 0 Remembering the 20-8 pounding they took last year, the Berdellmen went to work to gain revenge from the East Palestine Bulldogs. After a close first-half defensive battle, the County-seaters began to move early in the third quarter. After a Bulldog punt was blocked, the Cats had the ball on the enemy's 'Ii yard stripe. Two plays later Beaver led 6-O. The final Bobcat tally came in the fourth quarter on a 44 yard off-tackle iaunt by Lauson Cashclollar. Victory number two was in the bag! BEAVER 22 MIDLAND 6 The Bobcats' first bus ride ended on a highly successful note. After a slow start, the Beaver cleaters swung into high gear and trounced the Midland Leopards. Lauson Cash- dollar opened the scoring in the second per- iod with a 44 yard run. The Maroon and Grey picked up two more points in the same period with a safety. Beaver added two more tallies in the third stanza on runs of 8 and 7 yards by senior halfback Don Novac. The lone Mid- land score came late in the fourth quarter against the Beaver reserves, who gained valu- able experience playing almost all of the fourth period. BEAVER 'I4 HOPEWELL I0 An explosive fourth quarter rally enabled the Cats to sink the big, fast Hopewell Vikings. Late in the third stanza the Norsemen had a big TO-O lead, and it was beginning to look like the end of Beaver's victory streak. Then an explosion occurred that sent the Vikings' victory-ship to the bottom. With Beaver on their own 25, Cashdollar started the ruckus with a 57 yard run to the Hopewell 8 yard stripe. One play later the score was TO-7. The final tally came with 'l:I2 seconds left in the game when Dave Mooney ended a 76 yard drive by skirting left end for the essen- ial 6 points. BEAVER I2 NEW BRIGHTON 7 Another sensational last-minute rally kept Berdell's cleaters in the thick of the Class A race as they edged by the fired-up New Brighton Lions. The first half was complete frustration for both teams as neither could pose a serious threat. The Lions scored in the third quarter after they recovered a Bobcat fumble on the Maroon and Grey 'IQ yard stripe. The Cats scored on the last play of the same quarter on a beautiful 57 yard aerial from Dave Mooney to Ed Snitger. The game- winning tally came with 57 seconds left in the game when Mooney snuck over from the 'I yard line. l 4 4 BEAVER 7 FREEDOM 0 The County-seaters passed a big test when they downed the rugged Freedom Big Red. The only score of the game came in the sec- ond stanza on an eight yard pass to Ed Snit- ger, who ran the P.A.T. The Big Red put on only one serious threat, coming late in the first half, but it was snuffed out when the Bobcat defenders intercepted a pass on the Beaver 4 yard line. The Cats showed their best all-around form of the season with a strong defense and a well-balanced oH:ense. This big win gave Caketown fans a vision of greater honors W.P.l.A.L. honors. BEAVER I3 NORTH ALLEGHENY 13 Saturday, October 22, would have been a good day to stay in bed! The Beaver cleaters left North Allegheny about 4:30 that after- noon, still trying to figure out what had hap- pened. A good guess would be that lady luck took the day off. The frustrated Bobcats could do no right, and the pass-happy Tigers could do no wrong. Beaver scored both touchdowns in the second period. The second and story- telling extra point was wide of the mark. North Allegheny scored their second tally in the fourth quarter on a fantastic pass play. Beaver now had a record of 6-O-T, and they were still in the Class A race. BEAVER 27 MONACA 6 The revitalized Beaver Bobcats took out their revenge as they literally bombed the hapless Monaca Indians. Three of the Bob- cat tallies came on passes from Dave Mooney to Vince Binkoski. The Cats got rolling early in the initial period after Binkoski intercepted an Indian aerial on his own 45 yard stripe. The Berdellmen used the pass interception as a deadly weapon by inter-snagging five Mon- aca aerials from the hands of their intended receivers. Dick Forsythe, the hard-working senior fullback, scored the final tally in the third quarter when he raced 63 yards to pay- dirt... Eight down and one to go! BEAVER 16 ROCHESTER 0 The last victory of the regular season was the one the Bobcats had awaited for a long time. With iust one more victory needed to gain the coveted playoff berth, Berdell's chargers proceeded to pound the once-power- ful Rochester Rams. Both Beaver touchdowns came in the second quarter on pass plays from the reliable combination of Mooney to Binkoski. The Cats added a safety in the third quarter. The Bobcats completely dominated the game and the scent of victory was sweet after many years of losing at the hands of Rcchy. Senior Footballers Front Row, L to R: M. Kinkopf, R. Gerbi, L. Showing tremendous spirit, the fired-up Cats outclassed the big and heavily favored Bisons during the first half. The Berdellmen scored their only touchdown in the second quarter on a one yard plunge off right tackle. The Bisons scored both their tallies in the fourth after they recovered two costly fumbles on the part of the Bobcats. Se- wickley's last touchdown came with only 51 seconds remaining in the game. The hard-fought contest climaxed the best sea- son that the Maroon and Grey has ever known with a final record of 8-'I-l. W. P. I. A. His sense of sportsmanship and athletic drive so impressed his Sigma Chi Fraternity brothers that, after his death, they founded the annual Kay E. Lewis award in his memory. This award is made by the North Carolina chapter ofthe Sigma Chi Fraternity to the Beaver Area High School boy who best represents the Kay Lewis spirit in either intramural or varsity athletics. Selection of the trophy winner is determined by a committee consisting of the entire Beaver coaching staff, Mr. Paul Jones, representing the intramural program, Mr. Donald Higbee, faculty manager, Dr. William Charlesworth, high school principal, and two senior boys who do not par- ticipate in athletics. Mike Sanford was selected by the committee to receive the Kay Lewis Award in 1960. Mike's quiet, gentlemanly personality made him a favorite among the student body, and his burn- ing desire to win made him a worthy opponent of the teams he met in the fields of action. Mike also possessed a high quality of leadership. He lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. He is continuing his participation in athletics at Edinboro State College where he is a member of the football team. Former winners of the award were Bob Rich- ards, 1953, Kent Black, 1954, Don Hayes, 1955, Anthony Taormina, 1956, Bob Garvin, 1957, Drew Ward, 1958, and Steve Ratey, 1959. 3 xl . E 1 1 2 1 1 .
