At first it is a muddled mess and we wonder if it will ever be finished. But slowly and surely the pieces fall in place and at last you step back and admire your labor. In order to present the Shingas for 1960 of Beaver Area High School we have had to take many different and varied elements and by trial and error, adding or discarding, changing, re- arranging, writing and rewriting put all these various parts together in orderly manner to pro- duce this finished book. From September to March, when the Shingas was scheduled to go to press, pages had to be laid out, pictures had to be taken, articles had to be written, all pointing to that one final day of reckoning so that we could be sure our Shingas would be here for delivery on time. When you see your Shingas, you see the com- pleted jigsaw puzzle. But, unless you have spent Adviser Mr. W. W. Paterick 4 Editors Judy Gibson, Lois Rieser, William Paterick the time putting all its parts together you never can really appreciate the time, the effort, the sad- ness and gladness that went into the production of the Shingas. May we, the editors, take this means to ex- press our sincere thanks to all who helped in any way to make this Shingas as wonderful as we hope you think it is. May we particularly express our thanks to Dr. Charlesworth for granting us school time to take the necessary pictures. Thanks also to Mr. Kane for his superb job of handling the funds of our class so that we could produce our Shin- gas. To Mary Jo Patterson, treasurer of our class, and to Miss Ruth Johnston, who paid our bills through the activities fund, we'd like to express our thanks for efficiently handling our accounts. We would be remiss if we forget to express our thanks to the business managers and sales- men for setting a new sales record-1201 books. We hope you enjoy your 1960 Shingas. FROM THE STOREHOUSE 0F OUR MEMORIES O Captain, my Captain Our fearful trip is done. The ship has weathered every rack, The prize we sought is won. Although Walt Whitman never knew Mr. Paterick, we are certain that our Mr. Paterick is the type of individual to whom he was referring. Mr. Paterick is the Captain of the Shingas. When there are storms and rough weather at sea, everyone turns to the captain for instructions. When storms arise in the production of a yearbook, everyone turns to the adviser. Amidst all this responsibility and turmoil, Mr. Paterick commands the respect of all those who work with him. His fairness, patience, honesty and foresight are all taxed tothe utmost, for Mr. Paterick believes that all things worth doing are worth doing well. Anything that bears his name must be done correctly or not at all. This, then, accounts for the consistently fine books produced under his direction. Born at Hastings, Pennsylvania, at a very young age, fso he saysl he received his elementary and a portion of his secondary education there. After receiving his diploma from the high school at Patton, Pennsylvania, he worked for several years with the Western Electric Company in New York. Following this experience, he enrolled at Indiana State Teachers College to become the fifth member of his family to enter the teaching profession. In East McKeesport, where he started his teaching experiences, he met and later married Miss lngeborg Hedstrom. Before coming to Beaver in 1931, he took several advanced college courses as well as representing the W. F. Quarrie Co. as a salesman for the World Book Encyclopedia. In the fall of 1939 a war was starting in Europe. In Beaver, a new adviser was tackling the production of a Shingas, editing the Echo, teaching a course in Journalism and a full schedule of social studies. The war has long since ended, but the production of the Shingas goes on and on. For twenty-one years now Mr. Paterick and the Shingas have been synonomous. When we think of the Shingas we think of Mr. Paterick. The Shingas has often been called his annual headache, for each book, edited by successive senior classes has pre- sented distinct new challenges to tax his imagination and experience. Each year he must conceive new ideas and an original format, train new personnel, and finally present a book which will express the personality of the class and portray a cross-section of life in Beaver Area High School. This is no easy task. As we, through the eyes of our adviser, look back through the twenty- one years, we realize the changes wrought and the advances made in the pro- duction of the Shingas. In 1940, his first book contained 96 pages with only 73 engravings, our book contains 136 pages with 240 engravings. In 1940, 400 copies were produced, while the class of 1960 has set a new record with 1200 copies. To watch a yearbook such as the Shingas grow steadily into the produc- tion it is today,-representing a class of 230 members and a high school of approximately 1000-can only be appreciated by the one who has been asso- ciated with that growth. Not only for his personal dedication to our Shingas, but also for his interest in students, his life long devotion to his duties as teacher and adviser-we, the class of 1960, take great pride in dedicating our SHINGAS to- MR. Marietta, presented varied and stimu- lating programs this year, ranging from halftime shows at football games to parades. Skillful leadership, enthusiastic instrumental- ists, and unusual arrangements produced the winning combination. The musicians were in- vited to participate in the Kennywood Band Fes- tival as a result of their high degree of perfection. As a token of appreciation for their consistent diligence, senior members were presented with maroon corduroy band jackets. The able talent performed effective numbers at the Spring Band Concert. The sponsors are Mrs. Ruth Patterson and Miss Dolores Sayre. In order that more girls might learn the responsibilities of the club oFFicers, a set of officers was elected from each grade. The eighth grade officers are: Joan Sulser, president, Jean McConnel, vice-president, Kathy Reichart, secretary, and Susan Faulk, treasurer. The sev- enth grade oFFicers are: Betsy Reynolds, president, Helen Hall, vice-president, Sharon Gallagher, sec- retary, and Kathy Sell, treasurer. Each set of ofificers conducted alternate meetings. This year the Beaver-Rochester game ended in a tie. When Mr. Charles Linn CBeaver principall, and Mr. Fenton Farley lRochester principalj started the bucket tra- dition in 1951, they agreed that in the event ot a tie, the bucket, which is usually given to the winner ofthe game, would be shared by the schools. This year was the first time since 1951 that the game has been tied. Since Rochester had possession of the bucket at the time of the game, they kept it for 90 school days until March, when it was given to Beaver. The Bobcats came through in fine fashion, eliminating Dormont from the Class A race. Our boys looked well organized on the playing field and with this victory, it seemed that the Bobcats would top last season's record. BEAVER 8 - EAST PALESTINE 28 The next game for the Beaver Bobcats was at East Palestine, Ohio. The trip out of the state must not have agreed with our players for they were soundly defeated by a strong East Palestine team. ' i if . z 2, :iv if SENIOR FOOTBALLERS Standing, L. to R.: J. This time the Bobcats fell to the Midland Leopards. The loss knocked Beaver out of the Class A race. This score climaxed a 56 yard drive in only three plays. The Bobcats gained a total of 179 yards. BEAVER 7 - HOPEWELL 13 The Bobcats went into this game with a l-2 record. Over the past years, the Vikings and the Bobcats have met 12 times, with the Bobcats winning 9 of these and scoring T91 points to Hopewell's 72. The Vikings sunk Beaver with a T3-7 victory. The Bobcats shut out the Lions with a score of 18-O. In this contest New Brighton collected 13 tirst downs to Beaver's 9 and completed 14 out of 20 passes as compared to our 4 out of 10. Our Bobcats gained a total of 250 yards while New Brighton gained 262. Beaver scored three times without allowing New Brighton to cross our goal line. BEAVER 19 - FREEDOM 0 The following Friday saw our boys pitted against the Freedom Bulldogs on our field. Both teams went into this game with a 2-3 record and both were hoping to make it 3-3 with a win. But the Bulldogs were chased back to Freedom with a 19-0 loss. BEAVER 13 - NORTH ALLEGHENY 0 Our next game with North Allegheny was rained out on Friday but was played the follow- ing Monday. This delay did not dismay the Bob- cats for they rolled to their third shutout victory over the Tigers. In this contest Beaver totaled 223 yards while North Allegheny was held to only 70 yards. BEAVER 18 - MONACA 0 The sports reporters for the local newspaper predicted the Beaver-Monaca game as a toss-up, but our gridders made it a one-sided contest beating the Indians 18-0. Our 209 yards were split into 121 rushing and 88 passing. The In- dians were held to 38 yards rushing and 44 passing. BEAVER 12 - ROCHESTER 12 Then came the game everybody had been waiting for-the traditional game with Roches- ter, with the Oaken Bucket going to the victors. But the game ended in a 12-12 tie, which meant that each school would keep the bucket for six months. This was the second tie since 1908. A total of 50 games have been played up to last year, with Rochester winning 37, Beaver 12, and two ties. SENIOR JACKETS. Standing, L. to R.: R. Bevevino, R. Gray, W. Sanford, J. Hogan, E. However, in the past several years an increasing interest has been noticeable. In Beaver Area High School under the tutelage of Mr. David Mclsaac several boys have worked hard to develop an interest in the sport. While the results in the past have not been as desirable as we might have hoped tor, we will predict that the future will show some real development for Tennis as a maior sport. Kane Steve Ratey Steve Ratey was the 1959 recipient of the Kay Lewis Award. This award is presented annually by the Sigma Chi Fraternity of the University of North Carolina in memory of the late Kay Lewis, a 1947 graduate of Beaver High. Kay's fraternity brothers were so impressed with his athletic de- sire and sense of sportsmanship that they estab- lished this trophy to be awarded to the Beaver athlete who exemplifies the highest qualities of sportsmanship and leadership, whether in varsity or intramural sports. Steve was active in three major sports, earn- ing letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He met all standards necessary to receive the Kay Lewis Award. Steve is continuing in athletics at the Coast Guard Academy where he participates in football. Selection of the award-winner is determined by a committee consisting of the entire coaching staff, Mr. Paul Jones representing the intramural program, Mr. Donald Higbee, the faculty man- ager, the high school principal representing the administration, and two senior boys who do not participate in athletics. The winner of the trophy has his name inscribed on the plaque located in the trophy case in the south wing of the building. Former winners of this award were Bob Rich- ards, 1953, Kent Black, 1954, Don Hayes, 1955, Anthony Taormina, 1956, Bob Garvin, 1957, Drew Ward, 1958. 9 CLASSES Z W- 'w rm-N .m.,.....0-MW W 'WWW MNMMMXMMJQWW ,,,,..,...,,-.www-....W,,.,..-fM...W.A .,.,W.,.,,..M-wow-fw ,W , .....4......-.,..,,..-.....M.J-v ...W , , T. , ,, ..,.,, .slr . ,, , ' m e NW ' M W ' w'f5ffi'fEt.1, I . nw,-...4, ,, W F f Senior Candy Sales--Disiribuiion I..fo R.: T. What have been his reactions to Beaver High School? Eric says, ln Beaver I have found everyone to be friendly. People here seem to enioy life to its fullest extent. ln the high school, the pupil-teacher relationships are much more relaxed and informal than they are back home. It has been a very pleasant experience for me. We say, It is not hard to be friendly with anyone who is as friendly as you are, Eric, with your ever-ready smile and pleasant personality. It has been our pleasure to have you with us during this past year. May you hold fast to your memories of Beaver High School, and come back to visit with us some day, Eric. McMll.l.EN Superintendent Beaver Area Schools s,..1 .,,, The tasks involved in operating a school system as large as ours are many and varied. To know the complete educational picture, the problems, the accomplishments, the purchasing of supplies, the selection of teachers, textbooks etc., and a thousand other tasks is the job of Dr. C. B. McMillen, the superintendent. While we only see him on cccasion we know that he is always be- hind the scenes, planning an educational program that will improve our school sys- tem, always alert for new educational ideas and procedures and doing what ever is necessary to keep the entire school sys- tem running smoothly. For all these con- siderations we express our thanks. May we also thank Mr. John McClements for his capable handling of all the school finances. His task is no easy or light one. Our appreciation is also expressed to Miss Virginia Croyle and Miss Ruth John- ston the secretaries whose tasks are legion. Especially do we thank Miss Johnston for handling our Senior Class funds in the School Activity Account. Class of 1960 MR. JOHN McCLEMENTS Business Manager Beaver Area Schools Miss Ruth Johnston Secretary to the Superintendent Mis. Virginia Croyle Secretary to the Business Manager mtivn At the close of school last year Mr. Linn announced that he was resigning. Most of us wondered who would till his shoes. The position has been capably filled by Dr. William C. Charlesworth. Dr. Charlesworth was not a stranger to us, for we remember the years he served as our principal in the Junior High School. There are several reasons why Dr. Charlesworth has made a top-notch princ- ipal. One reason is his training. He was graduated from the University of Pittsburgh on three occasions-first with a Bachelor of Science, then a Master of Letters and finally with a Doctor of Education degree. Another reason is his experience. Dr. Charlesworth has served the Beaver Area Schools as a Biology teacher, Science teach- er, principal of the Junior High School and acting principal of the Senior High School. A third reason-and one we consider to be the most influential-Dr. Charlesworth is the 'Father of three children. May we also extend our thanks to Mr. Donald Higbee, Assistant Principal, and our secretaries Mrs. Lois Hagerty, and Mrs. Janet Williams. Class of 1960 DR. W. L. CHARLESWORTH Principal Beaver High School MR. DONALD HIGBEE Assistant Principal Mrs. Lois Hagerty Secretary to the Principal Mrs. Janet Williams Clerk and Switchboard Operator While we recognize that all of our teachers have an interest in us as students striving to meet the requirements for graduation, we also must pause in those hurried endeavors to thank Mrs. Beulah Cook, our guidance director, and Mr. Frank Rogers, our guidance counselor, for their interest in our immediate 'Future following gradu- ation. As we voice our hopes and aspirations to Mrs. Cook we find her ever willing to offer ad- vice, to lend a hand, to investigate requirements, to lend encouragement to whatever we hope to accomplish. No time is too long, no eFfort too great, seems to be her theme as she goes about her tasks of helping students in the solution of their problems. uidance MRS. BEULAH V. COOK Director of Guidance Capably following in her footsteps is Mr. Rogers. Lending his time and efforts principally to the underclassmen, he advises them on their proper selection of subjects which they will need for college entrance, Military Service or any one of many occupations. We cannot pass by without our expression of thanks to Mrs. Hogsett, who very diligently performed all the clerical tasks of the guidance office. To all we say a sincere thanks for your efforts on our behalf. Class of 1960 MR. FRANK ROGERS Guidance Counselor MRS. MARGARET HOGSETT Secretary JOHN BERDELL ANTHONY F. CANTELMI THOMAS L.
