Editors-Tom Davis, Judy Feicht, Abbe Lang Managers-James Moorhead, Judy McCondless Adviser-Mr. W. W. Paterick Foreword On the following pages of the 1959 Shingas we have tried to bring to you a pictorial cross section of life during our last year in Beaver Area High School. How well we have succeeded will become evident with your comments after you have looked thru the book and perused its contents. We hope you enioy the 1959 EDITORS Shingas as much as we have enioyed putting it together. J. Feicht, T. Davis, A. Lang. The Editors PHOTOGRAPHY STAFF-SHINGAS J, Charron, R. Bainbridge, J. Wayne, C. Occasionally one remains until he or she seems to become an essential part of the system. Sometimes their duties keep them very much in the public eye while others perform their appointed tasks with efficiency, quiet dignity and unassuming grace. Seldom noticed, yet they are always imparting wisdom, directing learning, exerting a good influence and making their presence felt for the benefit of pupils, faculty, and community. Such a person is she, to whom we are privileged to dedicate this T959 edition of the Shingas. Miss Adella Lawson, truly a dedicated teacher, ever conscious of her profes- sional responsibilities, has been equally trustworthy in many other ways. Born in Beaver Falls, she received her elementary education in the College Hill School. Following graduation from New Brighton High School she entered Geneva College where she maiored in the Language Arts to qualify for teaching in this field. Later she received a M.Ed. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After a period of teaching in Patterson Township School, Miss Lawson came to Beaver. Here she was assigned the task of introducing Spanish into the curricu- Ium. How well she has developed the program, how high her standards of achievement have been, may well be seen in the fact that many of her students have progressed rapidly in college, indeed some have been exempt from advanced courses due to their knowledge of fundamental Spanish grammar. She has returned to Geneva College on numerous occasions to teach Spanish in the evening and summer school, and to work in the Registrar's office. Her leadership, always exemplified by the highest ideals of Christian living, has been extremely varied. ln Beaver, she has been High School Building Repre- sentative for the B. A. E. A., she is a past president of the B. E. A., a past president of the Junior-Senior High Unit of the Beaver P. T. A., and a past president of the Beaver County P. T. A. She has been elected to membership in the woman's Hon- orary Educational fraternity-Delta Kappa Gamma. Not only in the school and community does her leadership make itself felt but also in her church. A life long member of the Geneva congregation of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, her activities in it include the teaching of a Women's Sabbath School class, membership in a Missionary Society, superinten- dent of ci Mission Sabbath School and leader of the choir and congregational singing. Quiet, reserved, unobtrusive, yet making her personality felt through the force of her Christian ethics, Miss Lawson characterizes the best. We feel honored in presenting this-our Book of the Year to our teacher and friend. Class of 1959 6 ,f dm 5, if 3 if ,..-- Q au? l 5 Ls N we hope they wil Our Senior k Mr. E. Thull S w-M ww M ... Kane Senior Class business is big business these days. Direction of the financial, social and other affairs of the Senior Class is no minor job. When we think of the amount of plan- ning it takes to provide the money to finance the Shingas, the Senior Dance, the senior ban- quet, as well as the purchasing of invitations, cards and thank you notes we realize what a tremendous job yours is. Guiding officers and committee members into wise decisions for all these things, organizing the class into coopera- tive groups to accomplish the desired results requires much forethought, patience and per- ceptive. We thank you, Mr. Kane, for being our guiding light in all our class endeavors. We know that future classes will profit greatly from your world of experience. Class of l959 Mr. William W. Paterick Supervising the production of a Shingas, as anyone can see, is becoming a bigger and bigger job. More books are published each year, the number of pages, and pictures, have increased, the amount of copy, the planning of layouts, all require more and more atten- tion to detail. Because of your twenty years of experience in the business of producing a Shingas, each of which is better in its own way, you seem to accomplish these insur- mountable tasks with distinction. May we pause here to express our sincere thanks to you, Mr. Paterick, for your eFforts in making a Shingas for 1959 which we know will take its place among the best of all the finer books which have been published in the past. We thank you sincerely. Under the direction of Leslie Marietta, the l25 high-stepping members ofthe B.A.H.S. Band performed in nine exciting half-time shows and several parades. As soon as football season was over, rehearsals began for the spring concert in which both skill and versatility were exhibited. This year the newly organized Symphonic Wind Ensemble gave its first annual invitational concert, and performed on numerous occasions 'For events both in and out of school. The Bop-Cats also entertained with their melodious dance music. Three special events were: a thrilling visit to Kennywood Park, the awarding of jackets to Senior members, and participating in Pitt Band Day. The annual banquet, planned by the Band Mothers, was the most fun of all. Eight representatives were chosen to attend Midwestern Band at Darlington. They were Betty Besong, Barbara Bunish, William Listh, Peggy Mills, James Moor- head, Carole Nelson, Mary Jo Patterson, and Renee Sarchet. Linda Walsh was our representative to Midwestern Orchestra. Beaver High School is as proud of its band as the members themselves, who admit that while it is hard work, it is fun and a valuable experience. 92 Jr. Hi Band Front Row, L. to R.: J. Searight, M. About two weeks after the 'final game of the season, a banquet, which is spon- sored by the Football Mothers, is held for the boys and their parents. At this ban- quet, letters are presented by Mr. Linn to every boy who has earned one. Each of the seniors is given a small statuette, a miniature gold football, and a iacket which the boys themselves picked out before the season began. The Football Mothers earn the money for this dinner and these awards, by selling programs at the games and sponsoring the dances after the games. SENIORS IN UNIFORM GROVE CITY VS. Although the score doesn't show it, it was a fiery contest all the way to the final gun. Beaver - 6 Monaca - 0 The toughest victory of the season for the Cats, was the scalping of the Monaca Indians. Both teams were very strong defensively, and neither was able to make a strong threat in the first half. As the second half got underway, the Beaver boys seemed to find renewed vigor. With about two minutes to go, the cats plunged over from the two yard line to climax a 65 yard drive. Beaver - 0 Rochester - 20 To the victor belong the spoils! Rochy's done it again, the Oaken Bucket has been sen- tenced another year across the river. The Ram was merciless, as he rolled over the smaller Bob- cats for a 20 point victory. Beaver was held in their own territory for almost the entire game, after an attempt at an on-sides kick failed. JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL Front Row, L. to R.: J. Hogan, E. Loudon, E. Stewart, C. Bell, G. In addition to textbook edu- cation, one should acquire knowledge of living in today's complex society in a socially acceptable fashion. Schools should develop virtues-char- acter, honor, dependability, sincerity, kindness- and prepare the student for life, they should lay the foundation upon which the student will build either in further education or in direct contact with the outside world. Now, as seniors, an almost finished product of high school, we may review our few short years at BAHS and deter- mine how well we have achieved these purposes. Freshmen As freshmen we discovered ourselves quite alone. Though our classes were conducted in the senior high school, theoretically, we were con- sidered a part of the junior high. Actually, we were permitted to attend the affairs of neither and had to content ourselves with senior high left-overs, an occasional junior high assembly or pep meeting and dreams. Each of us antici- pated: eventually finding his way around the new surroundings, mastering the art of eating cafeteria food-in 25 minutes, actually seeing assembly participants not just blurred blobs of color, being considered something other than a disdainful freshman, and actively participating in senior high activities. However, we did have our brighter mo- ments. Didn't we delight in the night-after parties for which we used the seniors' Hawaiian Holiday and the juniors' Silhouette in Silver? ln acquainting us with senior high customs our sponsor, Miss Wain, and class officers, Don Sal- tarelli, Flo Pettler, Joy Springer, and Linda Bee- man did a commendable job. Although none of our boys were on the squad, we thrilled to Friday night football games. Some of our ranks were fortunate enough to be in the senior high band-an honor for a lowly freshman. For the girls, participation in Wo- men's Olympics, the May program of 1956, was a way of being included, we were too young and enthusiastic to fully understand why the upper- classmen complained about it so! Probably almost every freshman girl gazed excitedly- and perhaps a little wistfully-at the coronation of Jeanne Ross as May Queen. For the first time we could read the Bobcat's Echo, a printed, not a dittoed, school newspaper. As for books and classes, we entered a com- pletely new way of life. We now moved as indi- viduals and no longer as a home room. Teachers began to treat us as adults-well almost. Per- iods were shorter, never again were we to yawn through 80 minutes, double periods. Finally we had some, if only a little, choice in subject matter. Latin was the first foreign language for many of usp we vicariously lived the adventures of the Noted Jimmy. Algebra and Mr. Hopkins opened to us a form of mathematics which util- ized, but sugar-coated some of the drudgery of basic math. Wasn't the new General Science teacher, Mr. McBurney, a dream? What a shame that two such wonderful persons as Mr. Haddad and Mrs. Schaughency had to undertake the task of acquainting us with the dreaded Pennsyl- vania History! Our freshman year had begun the process of our high school education. We increased our textbook knowledge and advanced a little farther in choosing our careers. We learned to meet new people and develop our personalities in strange surroundings. By being given the oppor- tunities of making more decisions and added re- sponsibilities, we were developing character and growing up. Perhaps we didn't relish the thought of being lowly freshmen, but in retro- spect, we realize that we were preparing to face the responsibilities of the upper levels of high school. We parted at the close of the term with keen anticipation of actual membership in Beaver Area High School. Sophomores Beginning our sophomore year we realized we were bona fide members of the high school. We had moved forward one whole section in the auditorium, and many of our classes were con- ducted in the old building. For the first time we could actively join senior high activities- S. A. N. S. Club, Camera Club, G. A. A., Future Teachers, and Future Nurses. Our home room representatives could voice an opinion and cast a vote in student council. We apparently had acquired a few social graces for we could attend the seniors' dance, Sea Fantasy and the jun- iors' prom, Slightly Sophisticated. Several sophomore boys saw action as the Bobcats chalked up an impressive 7-2 record and finished the season spectacularly by bringing home the Old Oaken Bucket. This was to be Mr. Kane's last year as head coach of our foot- ball team. Mr. Marietta and the increasing B. H. S. Band entertained with some unusual half- time performances. ln addition to musicians, the sophomore class contributed three new ma- jorettes-Wozie, Sandy, and Kay. What excitement and fun we had in tack- ling Gridiron Glory, our football dance, it was an appropriate climax to a terrific season. The gym never seemed so large until we struggled at our first attempts to fabricate a ceiling of red and white-traditional football dance colors -crepe paper. Mr. Rogers' experience, officers such as Steve Ratey, Mimi Catanese, Ruth Farkas, and the co-operation of the entire class consti- tuted an unbeatable team. lt was with great and justified pride that we hosted the juniors and seniors to a major dance and directed the crown- ing of Football Queen Mary Ann Karns. Were you shocked to hear yelling in the halls? Closer observation revealed sophomore girls practicing yells such as lots of pep, lots of steam for cheerleading tryouts. Those who had the pep and the steam to stick out those two weeks deserve to be commended. All of the competitors got stiff muscles, but Joan, Peggy, and Sandy received more-the position of cheer- leaders. Trying our social wings caused many of us to procrastinate in our homework. Thus we ac- quired the knack of staying up all night, espe- cially prior to leaf collection and world history project deadlines. Biology class field trips pro- vided opportunities to discuss the latest jokes and gossip or just cut up. Speaking of cut up, do you recall that squeamish feeling and disinfec- tant odor of formaldehyde during the first earth- worm dissection! Friends, Romans, Country- men was the familiar cry heard round the school, erupting from Mrs. Hokman's room 104. Coach Mclsaac's world history class lyawni of- fered relief and a chance to catch up on the pre- vious night's sleep. Mr. Cantelmi and his Latin classes almost didn't get poor old Caesar across the Rubicon! Many students chose a College Pre- paratory, Commercial or General course, thus, this year served as a parting of the ways. Obviously, as May Day approached, the girls were participating members of high school. They groaned and complained as much as any upperclassman during the rehearsals for Disney- land, the setting in which Mary Ann Karns was crowned May Queen of 1957. We matured a lot in one brief year by ac- cepting and conquering new challenges in class work and social organizations. Faced with many new responsibilities we, with the help of our parents, interested teachers and classmates, proved capable of becoming juniors. Little did we know that our first year as upperclassmen was to top the riotous times we had as sopho- mares! Juniors Upperclassmen at last was an oft re- peated phrase as our junior year commenced. Until then the word busy had little meaning. School work was forgotten as we demonstrated our persuasive powers by selling an unprece- dented 57070 worth of magazines. This is an- other record, never beaten, set by the junior class. DeeDee Tokarski, Football Queen, reigned over the Pigskin Prom to conclude an outstand- ing season of 7-'I-l. No one had expected us to score so well that year. In basketball and base- ball, even though many junior boys saw action, these two sports were not as good as might have been expected. Dave Lennox proved his skill at track meets by setting several new records. Remember the fads of that year? The one effecting most people was the Asiatic Flu! Mr. Ledebur was caused a great deal of consterna- tion when several cast members of Stag Line, our fabulous class play, contracted the bug! However the play must go on!-and it did-fea- turing the original cast too. Early in the new year, an air of mystery and excitement surrounded the conference room and 215. Juniors could be found frantically grow- ing carolebells, hollyhocks, wisteria and other tropical flowers of a colonial plantation. Baron Elliots orchestra lent southern enchantment to Bells and Beaux, the Junior-Senior Prom. It far surpassed Shangri-la , the senior dance- just ask any member of the class of 59! Secondary to most of us came classes. Type- writers clacked far into the night as juniors com- posed literary masterpieces in the form of auto- biographies for English Ill. What ever would we have done without paper-bound novel condensa- tions containing critical analyses on the cover? ln the basket and balance the equation were the popular songs of Doc Reber in room 205. The tinkle of a service bell will forever remind math students of a year or so spent with Mr. Mowery. How many girls will be able to forget Mr. Kane's gorgeous blue eyes--or to remember the American History he taught? As juniors we qualified for a modern language-French or Spanish-journalism and speech. Spring brought with it the usual problems- May Day and finals. Most of us survived both, but not without some uncertainty. Many a stray bobby pin or piece of chewing gum fastened stray bits of cotton to the costumes of the junior girls as they portrayed the winter season by dancing to Winter Wonderland. Amid such an atmosphere did Jean Matthews crown Nancy Benner, May Queen. Life offers so much: we perhaps realized then that we get from it only what we put into it. We as a class co-operated and put a lot, from blood to tears, into creating a successful junior year. Such success necessitates capable leaders. Our sponsor, Mr. Cantelmi, and the class oFficers, Don Saltarelli, Kay Hoben, Janet McCleery, and Judy McCandless are to be commended highly for the capable leadership they gave us in all our class activities. Senior How strange it seems to realize that this is our last year in Beaver Area High School. Where will we be next year?-at college, in business school, in an office, the service or perhaps home- making. Everyone told us how busy our senior year would be with very little time to do the many things we wanted-home work, activities, dances, planning for the years ahead. Little did we realize then how true that was. As class officers, editors, and such we were too busy many times and some of our classes suf- fered. Our football season along with basketball, baseball and track all showed the prowess of our senior athletes. Some even became the recipient of athletic scholarships. The Football dance- Scrimmage Scamper put on by the Sophomores provided an interest- ing, enioyable and beautiful evening. Eddie Frazier's orchestra provided dreamy music. Dee Dee Baker made one of the prettiest Football Queens we have ever seen. The Junior Class Play-- Our Miss Brooks showed the drama devotees of Beaver the abili- ties of our Junior Thespians. College Board time found many Seniors di- ligently cramming to make the most of this op- portunity. We even tried to surpass previous records. Amid beautiful decorations and centered around the theme, Chest of Golden Opportun- ity, seventeen Seniors were inducted into the Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society. The pledge was directed by the president, Don Salterelli. Dr. McMillen presented the certificates of membership. Our Senior Dance Bali H'ai surpassed in beauty all those of the past. Palm trees, outrig- ger canoe and straw hut all added to the senti- mentality of the occasion as we danced to the romantic strains of Jimmy Rubbo's orchestra. Ah! never to be forgotten days and nights. Seventeenth Summer, a realistic drama, the first of its kind to be presented in Beaver High School turned out perfectly wonderful. A fine cast, aided by enthusiastic committees, and trained by Mrs. Hokman could hardly be ex- pected to do more. We would be remiss if we did not comment on the last dance we would be privileged to attend in B. H. S. The Junior Prom- Fantasia was all that could be expected. Beautifully decor- ated, the gym was the scene of dreamy music, light-hearted frivolity, yet with a slight twinge of regret that this had to be the last. Then came the day we had been waiting for. Just to hear the Ohs! and Ahs! as the 1959 Shin- gas, on which we had worked so feverishly to complete on time, made its appearance in the annual Shingas Dedication Assembly. Those mo- ments will stand out for many, many years in our memory. Now--all that is left-yet we do not mean to imply that they are least-are our Senior Ban- quet, Baccalaureate and Commencement exer- cises. These are really the highlights of our Sen- ior year. These are the events which will put us in with that ever growing group-known as Beaver High School Alumni. Once again we say-it seems strange to re- alize that we won't be here next September. Dur- ing our years here we have acquired a good edu- cation, and, we hope, have developed character- istics of honor, loyalty, dependability, and kind- ness. Our teachers have tried to lay a firm foun- dation for us. As we, the Class of 1959, leave Beaver High, and infiltrate the outer world, we hold our eyes to the future but there will be times when our thoughts will stray back to our Alma Mater and we will remember the good times, the carefree days, and perhaps the hard work. 1515 f W 4 f X N?
