Your 18 years of service to Beaver Area High School, your definite interest in everyone, your fine character and pleasing personality, were all considered when the class of 1958 chose you for this honor. You have been strongly motivated to offer only the best in Mechanical Drawing and Shop instruction. The various awards won by your students attest the quality of your teach- mg. You were born in Venetia, Pennsylvania, attended the Bethel schools and were graduated from the California fPa.1 State Teachers College with the degree Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts. Later you received your Master in Educa- tion degree from the University of Pittsburgh. ln January 1940 you came to Beaver schools to take up your duties as Industrial Arts instruc- tor, but you remained only a few years before answering the call to serve in the Navy. Two and one-half years later you returned to Beaver to stay. ln our school you have been active not only as a teacher, but in extra-curricular affairs as well. At present you hold the titles of attend- ance officer and faculty manager of athletics. Previous to these assignments you found time to sponsor a Vocational Club, a Sportsmans Club and the Bobcat Club. ln civic life you are a loyal Rotarian, a member of the Beaver Sportsmans Club and a faithful member and officer in the Beaver Christian Church. Friendship is one of life's most valuable gifts. Through your many activities and associa- tions you have gathered a host of friends. May we hope to be included among them. We, the class of 1958, express our sincere thanks for this friendship, your time and assist- ance, and proudly present our Shingas to you. Class of 1958. Moore 42 EDITORS Sarah .lane Cooke Boyd Murray Sally Davis The Shingas is great for '58. This slogan was the keynote of the highly successful T958 sales campaign. Sales manager, Bucky Noll and his assistants on the circulation staff sold T150 subscriptions forthe 1958 Shingas. It is not likely that many people realize the length of time taken to produce a yearbook. Mr. Paterick chose the editors, Sarah Jane Cooke, Sally Davis, and Boyd Murray in early October. Every afternoon between that time and March, room 'I05 was the center of great activity. The book was planned by the editors, the soles drive was organized, reporters were assigned to cover all school functions, and the photographers came to take a great number of pictures. When the pictures were returned from the photographer, the photography staff went to work sorting, trim- ming, and gluing the pictures on their panels. At the same time the literary editors were busy edit- ing and revising the reports and stories of the re- porters. Then all work had to be proofread and typed. Actually this is everyone's Shingas because the job of the staff is to record on paper the per sonality and character of the Class of 1958. TYPISTS J. Yellig, M. J. Sell, J. Birge, B. Bogovich, B. Their worthwhile proiects this year were the sending of nine boxes of clothing to three needy families in Kentucky, addressing March of Dimes' cards, and holding the Square and Round Dance , in cooperation with the Hi-Y. The group's sponsor was Mrs. Ellwood Hughes and the officers were: Marion Foster, president, Carolyn Krupinski, vice-president, Elizabeth Sutter, secretary, Carole Hammond, treasurer, Susan Swager, historian and Lee Ann Rodgers, chaplain. Service and kindness to others may well ex- press the theme ofthe Alpha Tri-Hi-Y, an organi- zation consisting of 39 iunior and senior girls. Each Saturday two girls were sent to Roches- ter Hospital to take a cart containing magazines and candy to the patients. The Rochester Hos- pital was again the center of the girls' wcrk at Christmas time when they made favors for the patients. Other proiects included the annual mum sale and devotions in the Thanksgiving and Easter assemblies. The officers are Janice Riggs, president, Kay McConnel, vice president, Susan Rice, treasurer, Joy Springer, chaplain, Sarah Jane Cooke, his- torian, and Mrs. J. W. McBurney, advisor. Mrs. J. Linn Chap- ter of the Future Teachers of America. The chapter has 40 iunior and senior members. The three main purposes of the chapter are to acquaint its members with the teaching pro- fession, to help the prospective teachers select their colleges, and to give the future teachers some actual experience in instructing pupils by letting them do occa- J sional student teaching. ln trying to fulfill these aims the group has heard experienced - teachers, has seen movies, and has conducted panel discussions. The officers are president, Jean Mathews, vice president, Nell Torrencep secretary, Judy Cazen, and treasurer, Nancy Stammelbachg sponsor, Mrs. Bar- bara McCoy. s 62 Guidance in being sure of their choice of professions and choosing the right training school is the aim of Future Nurses of America Club for its fifty mem- bers. This year the girls participated with the Tri-Hi-Y in taking a gift cart through Rochester Hospital. In October the organization made a trip to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh and later enioyed sharing their impres- sions and asking questions about the hos- pital. At the November meeting, Karen Riggs, a graduate of Beaver High School and a former student of Sewickley Hos- pital, told the girls something of the train- ing and life there. As a Christmas project the future nurses assembled gifts for a worthy fam- ily. Two women representing the Western Pennsylvania Hospital Council visited the club, talking to the members and show- ing films. DL BHIILL The Beaver Area High School Marching Band, one hundred and twenty strong, completed another successful football season. Although badly ham- pered by the wet weather and the flu, the amphibious organization, under the direction of Leslie H. Marietta participated in most of the football games and numerous parades. Some high points of the season were performing at the Pitt stadium during the university's annual band day and a trip to Kennywood Park. After football season the concert band began to practice in preparation for the annual concert in April. The band banquet was held in February and everyone had a wonderful time, thanks to the band mothers who organ- ized the banquet and who worked so hard during football season selling food in order to buy band iackets for the seniors and much needed equip- ment. Midwest District Band was held in New Castle this year and Beaver was well represented. The students selected for the 250 piece band were Susan Brown, Sarah Jane Cooke, Dave Lipsitz, Janice Logan, Skip McConnel, Libby McTaggart, Dick Morrow, Chris Reynolds, Lois Shafer, Aarne Vesilind, and Ed White. 75 ORCHESTRA Center Circle, l. to r.-L. Logan, Piano. 0 Once again the orchestra, under the capable guidance of Mr. Marietta, enjoyed a successful year cf rehearsal, climaxed by its performance in the Spring Concert. Both classical and Broadway music was played by the group, which this year was comprised of 33 student musicians. The members worked especially hard to overcome a deficiency of string instruments. The orchestra has certainly contributed to the quality and value of Beaver High's growing music department. ' gms. fhrmm, Following a school year of practicing three times a week, the freshmen girls' chorus per- formed capobly at the spring choral concert. These fifty-six girls learned a variety of music from spirituals to light opera. Under the direction of B. Nelson Maurer they are being prepared for mixed and girls' chorus for their re- maining years at B. H.S. Some have already shown their talents by performing in the Junior High School Operetta. Accompanists for the chorus are: Shirley Fei- bus, Susan Swager, and Patti Macon. N!NTH GRADE CHORUS First row, l. to r.-B. McNear, K. Sommer, P. Leiffer, C. Stahl, J. Ziscau, L. Sutton, N. Dixon, L. Although cheerleading is the ofticial iob of these girls, who work under the leadership of head cheerleader, Jean Mathews and spcnsor Betty Sue Schaugh- ency, they have done many more things than this. They planned all pep meet- ings and participated in them. They led the cheers at the pep meetings, football games, basketball games, and-this year for the first time-the bonfire. At the end of the fall, they trained those sophomore girls who were interested in becom- ing cheerleaders. The girls have carried on the tradition of fine cheerleading, set by the many previous cheerleaders of Beaver Area High School. 80 8' 3 iv x . MISS DEE DEE TOKARSKY jrwtball mance, On November 15, 1957, the annual football dance, Pigskin Prom, was held in the Beaver Area High School gym. Amidst the traditional red and white decora- tions, Miss Dee Dee Tokarsky reigned as football queen. Crowned by Anthony Catenese, Miss Tokarsky was at- tended by Nancy Benner and Jean Mathews and their escorts, .lack Stewart, captain, and Dick Bevington. The queen's chair was beautifully accented with gold and surrounded with trellises cn which was writ- ten Congratulations Dee. To pay tribute to the team, miniature footballs bearing each player's name dotted the gym and football programs were given as sou- venirs. The sophomores and their sponsor, Frank Rogers, are to be commended on such a fine and successful dance. Their advertising campaign paid off well as this football dance was one of the most successful ever held in recent years. 81 BEAVER 0 GROVE CITY 0 Friday-thirteen-proved a nemesis for Coach Berdell and his Bobcats in iourneying to Grove City to open the season. lnexperience, costly fumbles and failure to capitalize scoring opportunities cost the cats the game. The Grov- ers' ground attack was stopped cold. Result- scoreless tie. BEAVER 7 QUAKER VALLEY 6 With only seconds left the Bobcats stunned Quaker Valley as Mike Casp turned left for seven yards and scored our only TD of the game. On a fake placekick Catanese hit Staub with a perfect pass to add the extra point. A kick, blocked by Jack Stewart plus fine teamwork defense spelled defeat for the Quakers their first playing as Quaker Valley High. BEAVER 6 MIDLAND 0 Avenging last year's defeat the Bobcats won number two from Midland on our home grid. The Lecpards, although hampered by fumbles, could not penetrate Beaver territory but they did suc- ceed in stopping many of the cats drives. Late in the game, sparked by Catanese and climaxed by a two yard plunge Casp scored the lone TD of the game. BEAVER 28 HOPEWELL 12 Beaver's charging line and hard running backs combined to give the Bobcats a comfortable lead of two TDs during the first half, Hopewell struck back with two quick tallies in the fourth and victory seemed uncertain. However, with the aid of an interception, a fumble, and time- Beaver bounced back with a pair of TDs to put the game on ice. BEAVER 25 NEW BRIGHTON 6 Back to back touchdowns in each of the first and third quarters gave the Bobcats a well earned win over New Brighton. Plunges, quar- terback keeper plays, coupled with a terrific 63 yard punt return by Ed Staub all helped Beaver push across those four TDS. A 23 yard pass play in the fourth quarter by Brighton ruined Beaver's shutout. BEAVER 37 FREEDOM 6 Victory tastes sweet. The Bobcats clawed the Freedom Bulldogs for win number five. Beav- er's potent offense overcame Freedom's strong defense as the Tony to Ed combo clicked for two TDS. Casp rambled for two more on runs of 42 and 69 yards. Gordon and Ratey each added one to complete the scoring. BEAVER 24 NORTH ALLEGHENY 0 Victory number six came at the expense of North Allegheny. Everything clicked right as Dean, Casp and Bevington recovered fumbles to help set up Beaver's TDS. A 63 yard pass play with speedy Jack Stewart on the receiving end was the highlight of the game. Crichton, Cat- anese and Casp scored the other TDS. BEAVER I3 MONACA 7 Seven in a Row -Beaver's Bobcats were still in W.P.l.A.L. competition as they downed a hard fighting Monaca Indian Tribe 'l3 to 7. De- termined to avenge the one point defeat of last year and trailing 7-0 at half time-Beaver drove 65 yards to pay dirt. Catanese scored first on a three yard plunge and Casp followed with the winning TD-three minutes later. BEAVER 6 ROCHESTER 7 Alas and alack! All good things must end. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the Rochy Rams were really up for this one and hopes for a W.P.l.A.L. championship and the Old Oaken Bucket went sailing as Rochy scored first and converted. Coming back strongly after Casp sparked the team with his 59 yard run from scrimmage, Beaver scored but failed to convert. Thus any claim to fame vanished. Kane Kay Lewis was a member of the Class of 1947. His great athletic desire and sense of sportsmanship so impressed his Sigma Chi Fraternity brothers at the Uni- versity of North Carolina, that they founded, in his memory, this annual Kay E. Lewis award to the Beaver boy who best personifies his spirit in either intramural or varsity athletics. This award is made by the Uni- versity of North Carolina chapter of the Sigma Chi Fra- ternity. Every year a committee ofthe Coaching staff, the principal, Mr. Paul Jones-representing intramural athletics-and two senior boys who do not participate in athletics is 'Formed to decide the recipient of this honor. Last year the committee chose Bob Garvin as the boy in athletics who exemplified the highest quali- ties of leadership and sportsmanship. Bob played varsity baseball and basketball, and he consistently displayed these qualities both on the diamond and the floor. The class of 1958 would like to congratulate Bob Garvin, the fifth winner of the Kay Lewis award. 92 pta-y,K11 'wx I Q' -- W, 4 QPQYNNMMWUQNU lu ' W as K M Nu X ll!!!-1':'. xxx M D nf. . l 1 4 Q' J x.. ,Y X, 1 ., . ,.,,,, R A3 0' W J 55352 WSL 213. , Q L! PARK FRANZ Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Mr. Franz entered the Beaver School system about 1940 and very soon thereafter was made super- intendent of buildings and grounds. Assigned the task of seeing that all buildings were kept in good repair and all grounds in good condition, he set about his work in his customary efficient manner. During the war, while Mr. Higbee was in the ser- vice, he was transferred to the Industrial Arts depart- ment, where, under an emergency certificate, he taught classes in Mechanical Drawing and Shop in the manner of a professional teacher. He also served as sponsor of the Bobcat Club during his term as Industrial Arts teacher. In the intervening years, evidence on all sides shows the effects of his handiwork. New typing desks for the Commercial department, new desks in the Mechanical Drawing room were all designed and con- structed by him. lnstallation of light fixtures, tile floor- ing and walls, storage closets constructed and many more things all bear mute testimony to the painstaking skill and expert craftsmanship of this man. We, in the high school, who know and recognize his value not only as a craftsman but also his friendly smile, his pleasing personality and above all his will- ingness to go out of his way to help when and where- ever needed, feel that our school is losing someone who will be hard to replace, yet we recognize his right to a well earned and iustified retirement. We wish for him the best of everything and many, many years ahead to enjoy the fruits of his labor. 01111, sfofm, Hafbtmmnfi- Hain, Mr. Glen Smith or Smitty as he was more famil- iarly known retired from active duty during this past school year. Having suffered a mild heart attack about a year ago he felt sufficiently recovered to start again last September. However, due to the strenuous expenditure of energy which Smitty always made, it became evident that if he were not to seriously im- pair his health further it would be wiser to withdraw under disability retirement before complications arose. Mr. Smith came to Beaver some twenty-two years ago from Springdale, Pennsylvania where he had been teaching. During his stay here he taught all of the various commercial subiects and some outside his field. When physical education instructors were scarce he took over as gym instructor. As a patriotic duty and because of his knowledge of military science and tac- tics, he founded and commanded a Victory Corps fcr several years during World War ll. Always active in extra curricular aflairs, he was for years, sponsor of the Bobcat Club and Senior class. On a number of occasions he acted as Master of Cere- monies at the annual football banquet. We, in the high school, regret losing Smitty as a teacher and fellow faculty member, but sincerely hope that his early retirement will result in many years of restful living and a return to strong health, and pos- sibly an eventual return to his chosen profession. 127 MR.
