Its resolution into a union or district required the approval of the citizens in each unit. This was approved by the voters in November, 1953. July 7, following, saw the beginning of the Beaver Area School District, composed of Boro and Brighton Townships, Bridgewater and Beaver Boros. This year is also noteworthy from the fact that a new wing and a cafeteria were added to two buildings-the Brighton Township School and the Senior High School. The gymnasium of the high school was reconstructed to provide greater facilities for classes conducted there. As a tinal touch, the beautiful, new cafeteria was opened to the student body on February 1. At the present writing, plans are under way for a new Senior High School, the site of which has not been officially dis- closed, although several are being considered. Looking into the future, it appears that the growth in enrollment in the Beaver Area Schools will look somewhat like this: Grades Grades Grades 1to6 7to9 10to12 Present ....,....,..........,.,.. .,..... 1 875 730 500 Estimated for 1957 .....,. ......... 2 000 830 610 1960 ..... ...,... 2 200 930 790 unior High School . if-'Q fiilgijtiiflltljtgfg K iwi? 5 'V-'4lLs'?-.E 'I fra all -r,m.?m.' We have found that Mr. R. Glen-don Smith, our effervescent, happy-go- lucky commercial teacher is-a friend indeed. Always willing to help, offer counsel, or buoy up one's spirits when they are dragging-he is known and loved by everybody in and around the high school. Smitty, a name by which he is well known, was born in Grove City. Upon graduation from Grove City High School, he enrolled in Valley Forge Military Academy and was a member of its first gradu- ating class. Returning home, he entered Grove City College where he received the degree, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The next stop in his busy, happy life was in Springdale, Pennsyl- vania. There he taught commercial subjects in the high school for two years. Moving to Beaver in 1936, he took over much of the work of the Commercial Department and in his stay here has taught every subject which it offers. To show his versatility, Mr. Smith substituted in the Physical Edu- cation Department for two years during World War ll. At that time he organized, trained, and commanded a Victory Corps, which won much acclaim in the community. ln addition to teaching a full schedule of classes each year of the 18 he has been in Beaver, he has, at various times, served as sponsor of the Bobcat Club, the senior, junior, freshman classes, and as drill master for the majorettes and cheerleaders. With all such activities, it is surprising to see the pep he displays in his walk, in his actions, in his classes, in fact, in everything. So we, the class of 1955, recognizing his abilities, his understand- ing nature, and his love for young people, are happy and proud to dedicate our Shingas to our good friend, sminy. 9 ,911 Hppreciation One of the biggest little jobs to be done in Beaver Senior High School is that of produc- . . I ing the Shingas. Ea-ch succeeding Senior C ass faces the task of making contracts, selecting covers, arranging pictures, and planning the layout, as well as a myriad of other problems. Without someone with experience and know- how to guide them, many of these would go undone or worse still, the book might never get to press. With 'I6 years of advising ex- perience behind him, Mr. William W. Paterick provided the necessary instruction to our staff so that we could present the largest and, we think, the finest Shingas ever published. For all his advice, supervision, and help, we sin- cerely express our thanks. Along with the work of the Shingas Ad- ' comes the herculean task of managing viser, the finances, directing the projects, and plan- ' . Taking ning the Senior banquet and dance these new duties as Senior Class Sponsor, UP Mrs. .lo Etta McLaughlin has done an excellent ' ' ' activities. iob of aiding us In our many Through the class officers and committees, her steady hand helped the class in a very profit able wreath and candle sale, a wonderful dance and the financially successful promo- tion of the class play. Mere words are inadequate to express th nks to Mrs McLaughlin, but we want our a . her to know that we really do appreciate her help and guidance during our last year in high school. McClements, Business Manager for the Beaver Area District, has assumed the responsibility of directing the financial aFFairs of the schools. He was employed during the past summer to take over these duties formerly con- ducted by the superintendent. From his oFfice in the high school building he quietly and em- ciently goes about the tasks of paying bills, making up payrolls, managing the cafeterias, handling purchasing contracts, and doing all things specifically business in their nature. Virginia Croyle, Secretary CHANDLER E. MCMILLAN, B.s., M.s., n. Ed. pf ,gb xl yy, SUPERINTENDENT or BEAVER AREA sci-lool.s WLMAZZ' Any period of transition is never easy. To undergo a change 'From four school districts oper- ating independently along some lines and col- lectively along others to a consolidated union re- quires many long hours of careful analyses, planning, and preparation. This is what the Beaver Area School District has recently com- pleted under the guidance of Dr. C. B. McMillan and a board of 22 directors. The work is not yet complete but under such capable leadership we can look forward to an even greater advance in education when the new high school building becomes a reality. The Class of T955 would like to express its gratitude to Dr. McMillan and the board for what they have done for us while we were in high school. Ruth E. Johnston, Secretary 14dminiA tration MR. CHARLES S. LINN A. B., M. ED. President's Cabinet S upel'17iAi0n Mr. Charles S. Linn, our senior high school principal, was to be found in a new setting this year. With the completion of the new addition to the old high school- his oFfice was moved to its new location. With more space and much more privacy, Mr. Linn and his efficient office stat? were able to go about their appointed tasks ot operating an ever expanding program of education. May we, the class ot 1955, pause here in our life, to sincerely thank Mr. Linn for the many kindnesses shown us, for the helping hands extended on many occasions, and for his wise, experienced counsel. We do appreciate all that he has done for us. May we also express our sin- cere thanks to Mrs. Mary Grove for the gracious and eFFicient manner in which she handles the 'lOOO and 'I roblems that 77Zwf!g!u'V0 confront her dails. Her quiet composure allays the fears of the most timid or quells the tur- bulent emotions of the most daring. 14 l ,gi Jsqilws GUIDANCE COUNSELOR Guidance, as a specialized service in a school system, is of comparatively recent origin. Formerly, the task of counseling students, voca- tionally or otherwise, fell generally to the teach- ers or more specifically to the principal. ln keeping with modern trends, the Beaver Area School District now has provided a full time guidance counselor in the person ot Mrs. Beulah V. Cook. From her oFiice, adiacent to the prin- cipal's, she directs the activities designed to show the interests and aptitudes of the students, give counsel to the confused, assist in college plans and in other ways direct the students' attention to a better life. May we, the Class ot '55, take time to ex- press our sincere thanks 'For the comfort, peace, and inspiration Mrs. Cook has brought to our troubled minds during this past year. These cryptic words from Mr. Linn, our principal, at noon on February 3, l953-struck sadness into the heart of every student and teacher who knew her. To lose a friend is badenough, but to lose a friend such as Jan, is indeed tragic. Charlotte Jan Eakin was born January 8, 1938, in Rochester, Pennsylvania, where she lived until she was ten. She attended the Adams Street School for five years before her family moved to Vanport. Her elementary education was com- pleted in the school there before she entered Beaver Junior High School. Perhaps her greatest thrill came when she was chosen a junior high cheerleader. Entering into her duties with such great enthusiasm she won the friendship and admira- tion of students and faculty alike. Jan had many hopes and dreams for the years ahead in high school. The first of these dreams was realized when, in her sophomore year, she was elected secretary of the Bobcat Club. Later, in November, she was selected as a cheerleader. Now, she knew, she was on her way. Many adventures were challenging her and with her characteristic enthusiasm, her friendly personality and her will to win she was bound to succeed. Her untimely death, however, cut short the opportunity to do all those things which she had planned. We grieve at her going and mourn our loss but we can agree with Edwin H. Parker as he said: Lifes race well run, Lrife's work well Clone, Life's victory won, Now cometlz restf' 42 anim! Standing Mr. W. W. Paterick, Pennie Pollock, Rae Nancy Fife. When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for a Senior Class to pub- lish another Shingas, and to assume, among the graduate classes of former years, the great and exalted position to which their year- book entitles them, a decent respect to the stu- dent body compels us to declare the work at- tached to such an undertaking. We hold these truths to be self-evident: editors, reporters, artists, typists, salesmen, and many others are needed, advice must be secured, contracts must be signed, plans must be made, deadlines must be met, and then a new book is born. The history of the present book is a his- tory of repeated urgings and admonitions by the adviser and editors, all having in direct object a better product, a higher sales, and a greater number of Oh's! and Ah's! when the Shingas appears in May. To prove this, let the facts be submitted to a candid school. The adviser selected Lee and Lou to organize, plan and coordinate the build- ing of the book. They selected Joe, Pennie, and Rae to plan, conduct, and complete the best sales campaign ever. They put artists, photographers, and writers to work producing the best for the pages of the Shingas. He coerced, caioled and counseled everyone into doing his best so that the Shingas would look the part. He contrived with others fbusiness firmsj and gave his assent to their ac- tions in order to: Save money by contracts, Save money by discounts, Secure greater services from those companies for the benefit of the class. They have given time, energy, and thought to the overall plan. They have exerted influence on all others to cooperate in getting the Shingas ready on time. He has and does praise the staff, the class, the faculty, and the student body for wholehearted support. Therefore, we, the class in final meeting as- sembled, do solemnly swear that we are, and of a right ought to be, proud of our Shingas and that it has full powers to assume among all other fine Shingases its proper station in life, and with firm reliance in our integrity, we mutually pledge our loyalty, our payments, and our sacred autograph- Best of Luck to a Swell Kid. Q ?v0 Mall Queen Denny Nancy Turner Phil Icenhour g Elsie Shuster Peggy Supler Kunkle Neil Avery The annual Football Dance, sponsored by the Sophomore Class under the direction of Mr. Rogers, was held in the gym on November 24. Considered by many to be one of the most delightful dances of the year, it was highlighted by the crowning of Nancy Turner as queen, attended by Elsie Shuster and Peggy Supler. Escorted to the throne by the co-captains, she was crowned by Phil lcenhour, as Neil Avery and Denny Kunkle, the other co-captains looked on in com- pany with the royal attendants. The crown bearer and sceptre bearer were Eddie Snyder and Nancy Stahl respectively. Attractively decorated in red and white with an array of roses imbedded in a trellis behind the throne, the gym presented a very colorful setting for the gay and festive occasion. 98 4355 'Sava' Eigflif za- : 5 III! Helen Jean Bloom THIS IS MY COUNTRY Sailors' Hornpipe Cowboys Book and Slate Varsouvianna Scarecrows May Pole Southern Belles THE RECESSIONAL The royal court was made up of eight senior girls: Marianne Anderson, Sandy Bix- ler, Mary Estelle DeWitt, Judy Hult, Rosalie Leis, and Janet Reising, who provided a beau- tiful background for their queen, vivacious Frances Cucinelli. Queen Fran, wearing a white lace gown which set off her curly black hair, was crowned in traditional May Day fashion by the Maid of Honor, pretty Helen Jean Bloom. The dances, on the theme This is My Country, were cleverly arranged by Mrs. Genevieve G. Truter, with the help of Rosalie Leis and Judy Hult. Happy sailors danced a lively hornpipe, charming Southern belles a graceful waltz, set off with a solo by Rosalie Leis. Petite little girls carrying books and slates gaily tripped to palsy-waIsy , while comical scarecrows loped their way across the field. Snappy cowboys, doing a precision routine, made a nice appearance in their bright costumes. Country folks doing the Var- souvianna, an old American folk dance, and the traditional May Pole dance brought to a close another impressive May Day program. To the Band, under the leadership of Mr. Leslie Marietta, much credit is given, to the script writers, Sally McClements, Janet Reising and Mary Shaw, and to the announcers- Joan Brew and Charles Farrell-many thanks are extended for their efforts in making the evening's performance so successful. ACT I And away we go, back through the years To Sophomores big without shyness or fears. Mr. Linn has replaced Mr. Shaffer and we are in a new place The building is huge with so many kids, we don't know a face. Trying to find lockers and classes, we were told the way And found there was no sixth fioor or elevators like they say. We soon got into the swing of things when football season came But somebody must have goofed, because we lost every game. Then to our Football Dance, the neatest of them all Under red and white streamers, we really had a ball. Our basketball season was cruel this year With 4 wins and 'I6 losses, Cutri's bitter we hear. But this is one year that will remain in our heart Because Jan Eakin left us and went on apart. Remember kids, she's watching over you and me. Let's give her something really grand to see. La Vie En Rose was a perfect prom with white and pink And the after prom party at the roller skating rink. There were lots of neat dances and parties you bet, With loads of nice kids that we finally met. Grrrr. One of these days, Mr. Charlesworth, one of these days! Ug, those horrible grasshoppers and worms have a way. We couldn't say Bugology was all bad though, 'Cause look at the neat field trips, and away we go. First to Pittsburgh to see the museum, flower show, and zoo We thought for sure the monkeys would keep Daisy, too. Then too, there's the trip to Cook's forest to recall What a panic and riot was had by us all. The Senior Dance was dandy and to another class good- bye. How dreamy it was when the band played Tell Me Why? Time for the last assembly and the Shingas goes to Mr. Linn Now to report cards and a promotion we win. Next year we'll be dandy, dandy Juniors and almost through Hurry back to B. H. S. we'll be looking there for you. ACT ll School days, here we go again, let's see, is every one back? There's Jackie, Betty, Ann, guess no one is to lack. There certainly are a lot of Juniors behind the wheel Have you seen Ted and Frank race and peel? Let's go Juniors, set a new record. That's what we heard. When we started our magazine sales-we got the word- Hooray! S5668.i6. Now Seniors, what do you have to say? Guess, we showed them. Now let's get whippy and 9UY- Mother ls A Freshman, was our wonderful class play. After a lot of work and practice, it went off okay. What a whippy, dippy Senior Dance they had that year. With snowflakes, two sleighs, and white reindeer. Of course, nothing could compare with our March Fan- tasy The prom to end all proms, it was something to see! At one end was a waterfall with colors abright And flowers surrounding a small cottage of white. The bandstand was covered with daisies of yellow 'And didn't Tom Cody's orchestra sound sweet and mellow? Who could forget that Post Prom Party? It was a riot. And by the looks of things no one pretended to be on a diet. The entertainment was super with Bobby Caputo's band. The Mulcays, that drummer and dancer, best in the land. When we got home that morning we were awfully tired, but happy Hoping no one was mad-especially Pappy. Seven in a row and no holiday. What a sin! The poor football players will lose the spirit to win. We got the afternoon off, 'cause Mr. Linn came through true blue. But he was so nice about our little revolt, I 'felt bad, didn't you? Steadies could be seen at the dances or as the Honey- mooners of the Hall . Guess our class wasn't passed by when cupid was on call. Hearts weren't all that worked though, because brains were active too. Our new members in the N.H.S. were the best we knew. A very good selection we all agree, good luck to next year When we choose some more to loin with thee. Just the facts, that's all, just the facts, and an honor goes to Mr. Reber The dedication of the Shingas for 27 years teaching in Beaver. The Maypole made ready, girls dancing in gym class, guess now we're on the beam 'Cause we're ready for May Day, and crowning our queen. All went well and we found new talent from the Varsou- vianna Dancing And didn't Fran, our lovely queen, look entrancing? Well kids, guess this just winds up our Junior year Har-har-hardy-har. Next year is ours. You can bet we'll be here. ACT Ill Hi, glad to see you back. Let's goto assembly, okay? Our usual welcome back to school, Seniors dismissed. Oh, Happy Day! Football days are here again. Look who's rough and tough Ike, Kunks, John, Churm, Jerry, Neil and Earle are hard to bluff. Wally, Jim, Ted, and Fred were always on the beam They were an asset to any great high school team. We had a 4-4-i season, 'Full of excitement and fun. Our student body was always on hand to watch them kick and run. The Football Dance was a huge success with Ike crowning Nancy Attended by Denny, Elsie, Neil, and Peggy, it was really fancy. The ghosts are coming hooray, hooray, This means MacBeth He has struck again. For Seniors, it's a matter at life and death. Never forget our wreath and candle sales, and money that we made Or that Shingas Hideway. lt's a wonder there wasn't a raid. Hot darn. Time out 'For the holidays, filled with dances and parties We heard some of our class were under the weather, the smarties. Wasn't the Christmas night dance neat, and the Bobcat Dance in the gym ummmm-boy. That New Year's Eve dance with the lights turned dim. Well, back to school again in nineteen fifty-tive After that vacation we 'felt more dead than alive. Honest, we didn't do anything, Mr. Paterick, But - - - he took us to court The way they looked at us, we must have looked the criminal sort. The gym is buzzing with excitement, because the boys are trying To do their best to get on the team, with basketballs flying. Our Seniors are making a showing for themselves this year. With Tom, Joe, Don, Neil, and John, we have nothing to tear. The school record was broken by Don Hayes and Earle Stout With 33 points each, these boys we can't do without. But what's this? Something's wrong! Some kind at plague has hit Twenty, thirty, a hundred! This thing's getting out of hand a bit. We thought for sure they'd change our dear Alma Mater To Pop Goes the Measles. Don't you think they aughter? Oh, the misery of it all, to sit in class and smell the food Coming from our new cafeteria, it puts you in the mood. We surely did Made Believe at our wondertur Senior Dance lt was beautiful and we made with romance. Tommy Cody's orchestra sounded just like a dream As he played our last dance, we were right on the beam. Has everyone met Corliss Archer? Well, you did in our class play. lt was really a neaty all along the way, Thanks goes to our band, peppy cheerleaders, teachers, and teams Mr. Linn, Dr. McMillan, Mrs. McLaughlin, Mr. Paterick and Mrs. Cook, for it seems They have held a special part in making our senior year the best ln Beaver High School, barring none of the rest. The big moment arrives, the person is named And Mr. Smith joins our Shingas 'Hall of Fame'.
