N0 one will forget her ac- tivities in our behalf, her sincerity, friend- ship, interest in our affairs, and her ever- present smile. It is for these qualities that she has won and held the respect and admiration of all her students. The little things in life determine the major thingsf, So it is that Mrs. Cook's simple likes and dislikes are characteristic of her personality. Among her many leisure time pursuits are reading good books, writing, and playing the piano. Be- ing a student of human nature, she recog- nizes shortcomings and frailties, as well as success and happiness and because of this understanding can make excellent use of the better features of people, while making allowances for the weaknesses. This recog- nition of human attributes has endeared her to faculty and student alike. Miss Beulah Veiock was an honor gradu- ate of New Brighton High School. She at- tended Grove City College on a scholarship and soon after began her teaching career in Beaver Schools. She stopped teaching for a while at 'the insistance of a Mr. Geyer Cook and took time out to raise a family. She returned to the profession about 1944 in our junior high school. In 1946 she accepted her present position as junior English teacher in the high school. During the war Mrs. Cook was an active member of the Red Cross and she is a past president of the Rochester Woman's Club. Not all of Mrs. Cookis work has been confined to the English classes in the high school in-which she makes American Liter- ature a real live experience. As coach of the junior Class plays she directed A Date With Iudyv, class of '48, Dear Ruthv, class of '49 and Strange Boardersv, representing the efforts of the present Senior class as juniors. As a .friend she showed a keen in- terest in-such activities as our magazine sale, junior prom and even the production of our Shingas. At present she is serving on a State Committee for English Curricular Revision giving prestige to both self and school. Mrs. Cook has earned the respect of Beaver students in many ways. Her mature counsel has helped us to meet our prob- lems. Her classes have dealt with develop- ing personalities and a broad view of the future. Her interest in our activities has helped inspire our class on to many new records. Her trust in our ability has given us encouragement to tackle jobs that other- wise we would have left undone. Her sincere friendship toward all students has gained admiration and love throughout the school. Thus it is with a small show of gratitude for the great help she has not only given to us but to the school and community alike that we, the Class of 1950, proudly dedicate our Shingas to our real friend- Mrs. Beulah Cook. He has offered to this class, Wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. When Dr. McCormick first came to Beaver schools in 1936, the class of ,50 was almost ready to begin kindergarten. He has shown a personal friendship throughout the years to every individual and has taken a keen interest in the future of each of the members of the class. Words fail to express our feeling of appreciation for his efforts in our behalf. He is a friend well worth hav- ing and one that we shall never forget. We believe that no person can handle this job any more capably than our principal. He is always reacly with congratulations for a job Well done, with encouragement for those who seek it, or with just retribution for those who need it. The effect of all this is to raise morale and to impart a sense of being an integral part of the school as Well as the organizations Within it. UWQZWX ROM the time students enter high school as Freshmen until they graduate four years later as seniors, they come under the guiding influence of many people. Of these a few stand out because of their close association with class extra curricular activities. Miss Anna Mary Fleck guided us through the first two hectic years. M Thelma Campbell took up there and led us to records never before attained by any class. Our magazine sale topped all previous records and the Tulip Time Prom was something to be talked about for years to come. We express our sincere appreciation for the time and effort she has put forth on our ac- count. As we entered our senior year Mr. William Charlesworth assumed the sponsorship. With his unbounding enthusiasm transferred to us we foloreciafion promptly sold over 700 boxes of Christmas Can- dles. Lending his aid to Mrs. Mary Allen Jones, director of our Senior Class Play, by taking over the business details, he helped to make I Re- member Mamaw a great success. And again in the exciting days around commencement his mature counsel kept us moving in the right di- rection. For his work we express many thanks. As Shingas adviser, Mr. Paterick, too, tackled a big job. His supervision has made another Shingas come to life to present a new chapter in the story of Beaver High School. We appreciate his knowledge of publications and his numerous ideas more than we can say. For the efforts and sound advice offered by these, our sponsors we, the Class of 1950 extend our warmest thanks and appreciation. wanfd N 7. The fundamental pur- pose of this organization is to give all Spanish students a chance to use the Spanish they learn in class. For this reason the meetings are con- ducted almost entirely in Spanish. If you should happen to wander into one of the monthly meetings you might be entertained with a play such as the one given by Jack White and Cordon Milligan at the October meeting. An extra special meeting was held at Christmas time, complete with decorations and a pinata. The pinata was made to resemble the head of Santa Claus, a cap, whiskers, cheeks and nose. made from red and white crepe paper. The officers of this club have been Cather- ine Zachodni, president, Marv Linn, vice-presi- dentg and Kitty Lou Heller, secretary-treasurer. SAWSCKMA LASH! Bugs and bacteria are on the loose. No, it's not an epidemic of virus xg it's only the workings of the Science and Nature Studv group, better known to its followers as the S. A. N. S. club. The club is open to all biology students who wish to supplement the knowledge which they have gained in the classroom. This is accom- plished through movies, talks, and demonstra- tions during the regular meetings, and by numer- ous field trips. One of the club's most interest- ing demonstrations this year was a display of stuffed wild animals secured from the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh. The S. A. N. S. club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Charlesworth, visits the Buhl Planetarium in Pittsburgh yearly. This is one of the main events of the club year, since the planetarium offers visual education in many fields of science. The club's officers are Bill Anderson, presi- dent, John Shelar, vice-president, james For- svthe, secretary, and Bob Mowery, treasurer. Under their leadership and the sponsorship of Mr. Charlesworth, the S. A. N. S. club has achiev- Jafin MO, amas, amatv-no, that wasn't part of a love story you heard when you passed room 214, that was a part of a Latin Club program. These were the awarding of prizes to the students re- ceiving the highest ave.rages in Latin, and par- ticipating in the Latin exhibition at Buhl Plane- tarium. The members also conducted their reg- ular meetings with games, skits, quizzes in La- tin. The officers of this club are known by their Latin names: Sally Fife, Consul, Bill Anderson, Pro-Consul, Rita Craig, Scribio, and Paul Shutey, Quaestor. The club's sponsor is Miss Anna Mary Fleck. enior dence HE Senior Science Club is a club in school that usually isn't joined solely to have fun. The purpose of this organization is to supplement class work and to gain extra knowledge in the different fields of science. It is open to all chem- istry and physics students. For its activities, the club has interesting experiments, demonstrations, talks, and scientific movies. Most of the meet- ings are concluded with a social gathering in which refreshments are served, in contrast with the more serious part of the program. The club is under the sponsorship of Mr. Reber, and the officers this year are: President, Ralph McCullough, Vice-President, Marilyn Moore, and Secretary-treasurer, Suzanne Mc- ed well eamed success. This past year the club has done a splendid piece of work spreading this feeling of Christian character throughout the club and school. From the impressive candlelight induction cere- mony in September, to the installation of officers in May, the group has worked hard to help better themselves and their classmates in their social, spiritual, physical and mental development. Besides the instructive meetings of the club, there were several social gatherings for the members including one informal dance open to the entire school. Another feature was an assembly program which was brought to the high school by the eluh and was well received by the students. The officers, who are to be commended for their fine leadership, are: Myrtle Minkc, presidentg Anne Me- Cullough, vice-president, Rose Marie Schneider, secreta- rv, Charlotte Bradshaw, treasurer, Janet Paterick, histori- ang Mary Eaton, chaplain, The sponsor is Miss Thelma Campbell. ome conomiw C744 LAMOHOUS girls and luscious meals is the goal which the members of the Home Economics Club try to reach. This task is not difficult if you dili- gently attend the club meetings and apply the knowledge gained there. The first few meetings were devoted to the election of officers and the planning of future programs, but once the arrangements were completed, the activities of the club provided action in the various fields of Home Eco- nomics as well as entertainment. If you received a beautifully wrapped Christmas gift it might have been wrapped by one of the club's members, since a demonstration on gift wrapping was part of the Christmas meeting. At various other meetings the girls learned how to dress fashionably and how to be well groomed. As outside activities, the club arranged for a bake sale, a demonstration of sewing machine attachments to the entire Home Economics department, and the prepara- tion and serving of several luncheons. A Valentine's Day tea and picnic in May were purely social events which were enjoyed by the club members. Under the direction of Miss Elizabeth McKinley, the club has profited by the gaining of knowledge and the social contacts made during the meetings. The offi- cers are Shirley Speer, president, Helen Sehleiter, vice- presidentg Laliue High, secretary, and Gwen McCain, treasurer. gui, iZ3rinL, cm M carrie Front Row: Marilyn Ervin, jean McCreanor, LaRue High, Helen Schleiler, Shirley Speer, Gwen McCain, Eleanor Rom- isher, Evelyn Cable, Marsue McChesney, Jacqueline Paul. The Wednesday night basket- ball games are eagerly anticipated by our boys. Thursday morning, if you visit the boys locker section, you will find the main topic of conversa- tion centered around these games. As in past years, senior football players, not out for basketball, are the team captains. These captains take the best available talent and hope they have a winning combination. The values gained from such an organiza- tion are immense. Although these boys are not varsity members, this is no reason for their talent to remain dormant. B. A. C. enables boys to gain experience and lessons they can apply to future life. They find it takes teamwork, good sports- manship, and team morale to win and lose grace- fully. The lessons learned from such an organi- zation can not be estimated in dollars and cents. 0661, el 5 HE busiest girls during gym classes and C. A. A. games are the Leaders. These girls are selected because of their interest in sports, leader- ship, sportsmanship, and activity in the C.A.A. These girls are chosen, some at the end of their sophomore year and some in their junior year, by the old leaders. Their duties consist of taking roll and checking showers in gym classes, helping with the junior High classes, helping with C. A. A. tournament games and generally assisting Miss Naismith in any Way possible. This Club, under Io Ann Schaff, president, and Charlotte Bradshaw, secretary, has been very active this year. Besides helping to put on a dance, this group attended the annual Play Day at Aliquippa and a special Hockey Play Day at P. C. W. in the fall. It might be mentioned that the girls did very well, winning one game and tying the other. These girls also enjoyed many thrilling basketball games with girls of other nearby schools. With money they made on the dance, the Leaders bought small silver basket- balls to help them always remember the wonder- ful times they had while members of the Lead- ers Club. 54,4 HOHTLY after school started in the fall, feminine shrieks of come, on, take it down the field or ouch, my shinf' could be heard echo- ing through the air. A rough, tough hockey or soc- cer game was progressing. From these games, the girls were very likely to emerge with many bruises, for they were sometimes kicked as often as the ball. Following hockey and soccer, the girls mov- ed into the gym for their sports. The first tourna- ment was volleyball. It has been heard around school that the senior boys challenged some of the girls to a volleyball game and that the girls accepted. As to the results, well- The next sport in which a large group of G. A. A. girls participated was basketball, the favor- ite of all sports. The teams, captained by the members of the Leaders Club, played at noon during the winter. As spring advanced, the girls again went out- side for the last sport, mushball. Anyone who valued her life didn't dare go within 35 feet of homeplate, for as soon as the batter hit the ball, the bat went flying. As a reward for their efforts, the girls who had obtained the required number of points at the end of the year, received an emblem. The girls will tell you that they had scads of fun working for these awards. Officers of the club were president, Mary Linn, vice president, Neda Burnesong secretary, Lois Piemmeg treasurer, Gwen McCain. Miss Charlotte Naismith was the capable sponsor. LEADERS CLUB Kneeling: Charlotte Bradshaw, Sally Garvin, Janet Broyles. Standing: jo Ann Schaff, Mary Linn, Barbara Moravec, Kathryn Craft, Myrtle Minke. gan! LTHOUGH the band played at pep meetings and at the Music Festival, it was essentially the marching unit of our music department. Nat- turally enough, the band received its greatest at- tention at the football games. At these games, the band, reinforced by the majorettes, executed many difficult formations. Bn, HI , The Clock , and the Halloween Crescent Moon were but a few of them. Aside from these, the band's repertoire included several specialty num- bers, such as the Wedding Ceremonyf, In that, it duplicated the actual ceremony, moreover, the placing of the ring and the traditional kiss proved very humorous. - The band was the backbone of the student bodyis morale and school spirit. At the pep meetings and then at the games, its lively music did much to put us in the spirit to cheer our team to victory. The band's reputation did not suffer in out of town performances. It has received several honorable mentions from surrounding commu- nities. Also, our band, along with two other bands, received a prize for the best marching and playing at the Rochester Centennial. Con- sidering the large number of competitors, this was indeed an honor. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Cornelius, the band practiced and improved. In this his second year at Beaver, Mr. Comelius set out to produce the finest band in the history of Beaver High. He made the members work hard the seventh period and often after school, but they remained loyal to him and even enjoyed the work. The band banquet, unlike most banquets, came in the middle, not at the end, of a success- ful season. Held in the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver, the affair was sponsored, as usual, by the Band Mothers. Following a delicious and filling turkey dinner, awards were presented to members of both the band and orchestra. After being introduced by toastmaster Mr. William Paterick, Mr. Linn presented letters to members who had served three years. Mrs. Young, Presi- dent of the Band Mothers, 'then presented gold pins to the senior members of the band and or- chestra. Those who received letters were: Don- ald Cadley, Ioseph Hammond, Reese Henry, Marjorie Kane, Nancy Mangiarelli, Ianet Pater- ick, Andree Razairre, Steve Schupay and Chalm- ers Waddell. Those who received pins Were: Vir- ginia Benson, Ernest Brown, Barbara Dowd, Iuliana Embree, Carol Gibson, Robert Girting, Roberta Graham, Robert Havenhill, Barry Kun- kle, Mary Ann LeFebvre, Ruth McCahan, Rich- ard Nevill, Helen Schleiter, Shirley Speer, and Robert Waddell. Mr. Cornelius, director, praised the group highly, then Barry Kunkle, student manager of the band, spoke briefly to thank all who had helped the band during the year. To climax the evening, an entertainment program was present- ed by Buddy O'N eil, a clever phonomimic, who gave impersonations of popular records. The Girls Chorus was limited to only Hfty members this year, due to the Girls Ensemble and Nfixed Chorus. Under the supervision of Mr. Cornelius, the group was able to present a splen- did Christmas program for the high school, and another program in February. These girls have Worked hard throughout the year, and deserve a great deal of commendation. Like the Girls Chorus, the Boys Glee Club worked earnestly to present their finest in popular and classical music. These boys acquired an abundance of determination and skill which has aided them through difficult performances. The Mixed Chorus is composed of those, who have successfully passed auditions for the group. In addition to a Thanksgiving performance, this unit formed the nucleus for the final number of the Spring Nlusic Festival, Battle Hymn of the Hepublicf' XVith the orchestra, the voices of the choristers made the festival a program of beauty and inspiration. These three organizations have endeared themselves to every boy and girl in our high school. They shall always be appreciated by the faculty and students of Beaver High for the harmony given. QPCA85 find USIC, music, music. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the orchestra met in the music room in the basement. Realizing that much practice is required in order to be able to do anything well, the orchestra members set out to Work hard and concentrate on their music. Hence, no one was surprised when the orchestra soon mastered such numbers as Nocturne,' and Light Cavalryf, Our conductor, Mr. Cornelius, in this, his se- cond year at Beaver, faced a difficult task in get- ting an orchestra together. However, he Worked hard with the group and soon had them playing together expertly. This required much labor on the part of both Mr. Cornelius and the orchestra members, but their success was evidenced by the Way they played at the junior and senior class plays and at several of our assemblies. Although the orchestra did not perform every week, its work and practice Went on just the same. The orchestra's greatest glory, however, came with the Spring Festival of 1950. At this time, the music department tried something entirely different. The entire choral department, includ- ing Glee Club, Mixed Chorus, and Girls Chorus, united with the orchestra in presenting The Bat- tle Hymn of The Republicfi This unusual num- ber, first of its kind in our school in many years, Was the outstanding feature of the Music Festival. and effectively demonstrated the abilities of our music department. jlwee frzfngd ana! oz gan! 3 528 lf. . CAMERA CLUB Watch the birdief, Say cheescf, These are a few of the things you would have heard, if you had visited the Camera Club. It was a fairly new organization in Beaver High School this past year, and was quite successful. The group met twice a month to discuss new innovations in photographic equipment and problems the members may have had as amateur photogra- phers. In addition to their regular meetings, they made several field trips on which they pho- tographed the interesting subjects they met. Some of these pictures were placed in the main hall where all students Could see them. Some of the members also photographed the various dances held during the year. The money from these pictures is to be used to buy equipment for their new dark room. This club was under the fine leadership of sponsor, Mr. William Charlesworth, president, Ioe Hammond, vice president, Donna Hageg sec- retary, Marjorie Kane, and treasurer, Cilson Mc- Clnre. Production of this book is a year-round process. When school commenced in the fall, the adviser, Mr. Paterick, was already choosing his editors, Barbara Dowd and Tom Piemme. Pictures were taken, engrav- ings prepared, and a great sales campaign was begun. ln two weeks all sales records were brok- en and the promises of a great Shingas ran high. ln the ensuing weeks the book was plotted and the art work was begun. Our artists, Millicent lteehl, Jean McCreanor, and Shirley Speer, de- serve much of the credit for the success of this book. The work on division pages, the bottoms of pages, and chronology is of a class seldom seen in high school yearbooks. Finallv bv Feb- ruary some of the work was ready for the printer and by March fifteenth the hook was to press. Now that publication of the 1950 hook has been completed the path is cleared for 1951. And may it he a great hook. IIE Echo, published monthly with copies available hy subscription only, added many new features to an already fine paper. Perhaps the most important of these was the standard maroon and grey cover adopted by the staff. However, this was not the only change, the staff decided to mimeograph the paper themselves. The process was very successful, and the staff is to he con- gratulated for its fine work. Two other features added to the Echo were a special page devoted to the music department, and a calender of school activities. Of course, each issue contained the usual articles on sports, club news, and fashions, along with editorials, witty sayings, and the eternal gossip columns. Among the activities of the Echo Staff were a trip through the office and printing plant of the Beaver V allev Times and the sponsorship of the animal Valentine Dance which was dubbed The Heart Hopf, Those who attended this dance will never forget the unique decorations and the dreamy music. STUDENT COUNCIL he student council is an organization com- posed of one member elected from each home room in the high school. The council under- took several worthwhile projects this year. They rented backrests at the football games, sold con- cessions at basketball games, decorated the school Christmas tree, sold pencils for the Tuberculosis Association, sponsored an amateur hour for stu- dents. and placed signs containing slogans in the main hall. The council has no governing power, but thev do bring the students viewpoints to the school authorities. The officers are: Tom Franks, president, Ronald Xliller, vice-presidentg and Yvonne Heath, secretary-treasurer. Nlr. Linn is the sponsor. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ervice, leadership, scholarship, and char- acter-these are the qualifications necessary to become a member of the Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society. To be chosen as a mem- ber is an honor available to all, but obtained by few. Twice each year at an impressive candle light ceremony, the society inducts those selected to become members. A certificate, declaring the studentis membership, is presented to each by Mr. Linn. Aided by Miss Cathryue Esenwein, this yearls group with Frank Forsythe, president, Tom Piemme, vice president, and Barbara Dowd, sec- retary-treasurer, has lived up to and increased the high standards and ideals set by their prede- cessors. These are the dreams made real by the Bobcat Club of B. H. S. This is a strictly social organization which has provided, with the help of Mr. Donald Hig- bee, sponsor, many senior high students with an enjoyable evening. While it is not a hard and fast rule, the dances are usually held on Saturday nightg if you didn,t happen to have a date that night you were more than Welcome, for students are encouraged to come stag. Fourteen dances were held this year and the attendance Was better than it has been in the past. Of course the club could not fail to have its animal Christmas dance. This year's dance was a huge success due mostly to the dreamy music and the ultra, ultra decorations. Those who at- tended Were heard to say that it topped the list of the holiday events. The credit for the success of these dances goes to William Segmiller, president, Steve Oli- phant, vice president, Nancy McCoy, secretary, and LaRue High, treasurer. MIDLAND We opened the season with Midland at Gyp- sy Glen Stadium. The Bobcats Wanted to avenge but Tom Equals' try for 7 was blocked. The score at the half Was 19-6. last yearis 19-12 defeat, but they were unable to do it. Midland 'took the kickoff. Beaver gained possession on a quick kick and started a march that ended when Beaver fumbled inside the Mid- land 30. The Bobcats faltered in the second half, af- ter receiving the kickoff. Midland made the first score when Allen carried from the 20. The extra point was good. In the fourth quarter. Yanosvich scored from the 24. Even in a 13-0 defeat, the play of the Bobcat line and the running of Don Ray, lim Pinkerton. and Bon Miller looked good. TARENTUM Our second game was with Tarentum. VVe took the first kickoff, but were stopped on the Tarentum 23. From there. the Redcats took control. The score stood at 13-0 when Beaver made its first T. D. Don Rav gave us 6 points, cond half, but Tarentum cracked through for another touchdown. The Bobcats, offense couldnit get started, and the final score was 25-6. Frank Forsythe and Don Ray began to display the ability which was to carry us through the year. WEST VIEW The Bobcats met their third defeat of the year at the hands of the West View Indians. Featured in downfield drives was the running of Don Rav and Ronnie Miller. They Were stopped short as Gressang intercepted one of Rayis passes and ran 63 yards before Forsythe pulled him down. Their threat was ended Buddy Har- rah intercepted a pass. The third quarter was fairlv matched but in the last stanza, Wfest View finally hit paydirt. Kibler lateralled to Heintz who flipped a long pass which right end Mazur caught in the end zone. A pass attempt for the extra point was incomplete, and Beaver had lost another game to the tune of 6-0. MONACA Monacais Indians handed the inexperienced Bobcats their fourth straight defeat of the sea- son. In the first quarter, Beaver fumbled on their own 21 yard line where Monaca manufactured a sustained drive climaxed by Dusoldis scoring from the one yard line. Nicol,s dropkick con- version was good. Beaver put up a stubborn defense in the second quarter, but neither team threatened seriously. The second half was made dismal for the home team as the Indians padded their lead by 19 points. The game clased with a 26-0 score. NEW BRIGHTON New Brighton nosed out the Bobcats 7-6 on the former's field in a close, hard fought game. New Brighton,s score came in the second period on a 78 yard run by the Lions, speedy halfback, Moldovan. Lynn's placement was good for the extra point. Beaver came smashing back in the third stanza with a 62 yard march climax- ed by Ray punching an off tackle smash on fourth down. For the extra point attempt, Ray hit right tackle but was stopped a bare few inches from the goal. The score remained un- changed at 7 to 6 through the rest of the ball game. FREEDOM We finally made it. Beaver's victory-starved Bobcats came through with a 7-6 win over the Freedom Bulldogs in a close game at Gypsy Glen Field. Beaver lost no time in scoring. We receiv- ed the opening kick-off and marched 66 yards for the tally. Don Ray climaxed the drive by going over from the three yard line. Ronnie Mil- ler added the extra point that was later to be- come the margin of victory. In the final quar- ter, Freedom drove 66 yards to score. Borro tried to plunge over for the extra point, but the determined Beaver linemen rose up to stop the play. BUTLER Beaver's one game winning streak,' was snapped by Butlefs Golden Tornado. Butler took the opening kickoff. A sleeper pass from Dunn to Yingling carried to the Beaver 26. Un- daunted by a 15 yard penalty, Butler scored on a long pass. The extra point came on a center plunge. Again, in the fourth quarter, taking Pinker- tonls kick on its own 26, the Tornado traveled 74 yards in eleven plays. Monteleone ran the last 19 yards for the score. A conversion at- tempt for the extra point was no good, but the Bobcats were still left on the wrong end of a 13-0 score. CORAOPOLIS By virtue of vicious line play and a powerful ground attack, Beaver smothered the favored Blue Devils. Early in the first stanza, Gord Milligan in- tercepted a pass on the Bliie Devily42 yard line, and went the remaining distance untouched. Later Coraopolis attempted to punt from their own 19 yard line. A high pass sailed over the punter and into the end zone where Koenig Hayes dropped on it for the second score. Iust before halftime, Ray passed to Hayes for 20 yards and another tally. Cory's lone score climaxed a sustained drive of 57 yards. Beaver bounced right back, grind- ing out 60-odd yards, John Hays punched over for the final tally. ROCHESTER This year the underdog Bobcats battled a strong Rochester eleven to a 6-6 deadlock, the only tie in the long series between the two schools. Led by Frank Forsythe, our line play- ed a stubbom defense. The Rams drew first blood with a wide lateral play at the end of a long march. Roches- gens placement was wide, and the score stood at -0. In the closing seconds of the first half, Ray heaved a long pass to Miller, who outran the Ram defenders for Beaver's score. Hay's line smash missed the extra point by inches. In the final period, Rochester was stopped short of a second tally on the Beaver 5 by the determined Bobcats. Thus the 1950 season came to a close. ry , fax ,jlfii Xelfmflv . f HE official close of tlie football season was proclaimed at tlie annual banquet for coaches, members of tlie squad, senior clieer- leaders, and parents of tlie boys. Clad in their pretty white sweaters and red corduroy skirts, they made a very striking picture as they cheered our teams to victory. Head cheerleader for the ,49-,50 season was Josie Cuzzetti. With Josie,s capable leading and the vigorous cheering of Nancy Lindahl, Evalyn Savisky, Hilda Haire, Carolyn Cooper, and Patty Anzio, our student body gave forth with many a lusty cheer for B. H. S. The girls introduced to us some novel new cheers which aided greatly. Rita Jean Craig, Shirley Azarello, Dolly Mott, and Edna Mae Holt are our up and coming new cheerleaders. We know that next year these girls will do their utmost, and keep the tradition set up by the present group. fa, fel. O OUR junior high school principal, Mr. Schaffer, may We express our sin- cere thanks for a job well done. In the past few years we have realized the full value of the guidance he offered while we were in junior high. He showed us a ready ability to get along with everybody by his own example. He proved that to be a friend hurts no one. We, of the Shingas, owe him a special debt of gratitude. The splendid cooperation he oifered in the preparation of this Ir. VVhile the crew handled scenery and curtains some of the time, their most frequent task was that of operating the lights. Ordi- narily not an extremely difficult task, lighting became a complicat- ed problem during the class playsg however, the boys came through without much trouble. The stage crew was an important part of every production. Its timing had to be perfect, for the success of the play depended upon it. The members of the stage crew were probablv the 'cforgotten menu of our dramatic production, but they were very important. Barrv Kuukle X' Tom Pieinme 1 X ppp Ralph McCu lough 7! Aside from the tact that tht Twenty-third Psalm was read prac- ticallv every other dav. the morn- ing devotions were in good taste. The system also proved valuable for spot announcements because ot' the speed with which it could be 'iplugged-inf, Although none of the boys plan a future in radio. the announcemeuts were well understood and a great help to everyone. rlli iwgfiiii it' 'it' tie .www Mft... tj fwi' 3245 W M t T T fi 9 ff .T fi ul lirc . iailif t, ga if if Ni. ,swf so A and 5 -' tltl :li iw.-9.1 xx i X om1mf1'off f f T ff 111 ffiilf THIKE UP the band! I J .ghdoof E026 Now I sit me down to work A Tri book on my lap, All my Stills and knowledge I am ready to uncap. I take out my worn pencil, My slide rule within reach, I work upon the problem- Cross an apple with a peach. First I take the cosine And divide it by a two. I put it over tangent, And then I follow through. Take the diameter of the apple And the square root of an eight, I daresn't stop now for I fear My answer just won't rate. Division now is possible, From 2 point 4 take 2 point 8. That will give the cube root of Any simple apple tree. From the product of the means And the sum of the extremes Take the difference and the product Of a couple of moonbeams. Now the long process is finished, When you come out with the peach, And the answer is by this time just outside of reach. You try it over once again Until it's half past four, And then when you have finished You jump upon the floor, You put your head between your hands And loudly shout for joy, For now you have succeeded. Boy! Oh, boyl Oh, boy! Oh, boy! And when you reach the climax Of this your so-called fit, You reach out for the apple-peach And take a bite of it. The chem lab is no place for me, N o doubt no place for you, For there you study elements And learn your valence, too. Experiments must be performed And deadlines must be met. If they're not through by a certain time You'll pay a heavy debt. I had a lulu just last week. My mind was not so placid, For I was asked to make some stuff They call sulphuric acid. I thought and though and thunk and thunk About how I would make it, And then I took a great big flask, Cautious not to break it. I put in it a dash of salt And then a pinch of copper, Then a bit of this and that And on it went a stopper. I put it on a flame to heat And let it boil and bubble. The teacher came and looked it at And Warned me thereld be trouble. I took it off and let it cool Then worked the calculations. There never was so much to figure In the history of ten nations. I added up specific heat And took away the weight And multiplied three ratios And came out with the date. I checked the figures up and down To end the giant task, And knew that if lid worked it right Twas acid in the flask. I lifted up the gosh dum lid To see what I had wrought. It smelled quite nice and looked so good But acid it was not. r . il l SW 'i cw . moaoar lsr' El Z I E Ik 2 i 1 ab XO R ' ' mg a ,mlm .5 33 x+..f5 r rt' ., , '. f i s 5:2--Tir .. 0 ,, y I f .rl 2 Tl 1rr U bA-i w!
