Under the direction of Mr. Brammer music director, and Mr. Smith, drill master the band has made manv unusual and inter- esting formations. For each game they form- ed a letter for the opposing school and a special novelty formation. The band made its first appearance at the Beaver-Leetsdale game where they formed a huge horse shoe for luck. ln the following games, the novelties included a Fifth Street dinkv train with mov- ing wheels and smoke a bubble pipe with large colored bubble balloons rising high into the skv a lighted crusaders shield with a burning flare cross in the center and flaming batons for accent and a smart new oldsmo bile with a horn and moving wheels The cli max of these formations came at the Roches ter Beaver game on Halloween night The lights were extinguished and in total dark ness the band formed a lighted lack-o-lantern and a skull with cross bones. The highlight of the evening came when Mary Lou MacMillen tw'irled flaming batons as the band performed a shadow dance. Victory celebrations, marches, and pep meetings were stimulated by our snappv band. They marched in the Firemen s Parade, and added to manv holidav celebrations. The maroon and gray' musicians were always there with spirited music. Donna Hag l nt l3r1dsh xx Reflecfions of fhe Culinary Arf UMMEf No, we just can't forget those delicious odors that issued forth from the home economics room. And say, wasn't that new room something to rave about? Don't you remember the three new kitchen units complete with sink, stove, table, and those super cupboards with just loads of room to put all the new utensils. l'll bet the girls real- ly enjoyed themselves at those meetings. While we're speaking of meetings, let's take a peek at the monthly gatherings of the Home Economics Club. With Miss McKinley supervising and ad- vising, the officers, president, Patty Iohnston, vice president, Emma Iean Way, secretary, Iudy Cooper, and treasurer, Edith Decker, conducted the first meeting which proved to be a grand success. Mrs. Marcellus Nesbitt presented an illustrative speech on home life in Egypt. The Home Economics Club ended the old year and started the new year with a delici- ous and beautiful Christmas tea which was served to the faculty and members of the home economics department. The tables were gaily decorated, and the highlight was the beautiful Christmas tree decorated by the girls. ln March the members turned the spot- light on fashions and presented a style show sponsored by one of Pittsburgh's department stores. A trip to the Heinz factory was of great interest to the club members and a fitting conclusion to the year's activities. Yes, this has truly been a year of happy reflections for the Home Economics Club. J C, - i NX Home Economics Room Top Row: Frances Kitson Ros- lonee Donna Cl rk VV'ld 'VI ll , ,c ,. 1 a , 1 a i egi . These are but a few of the familiar sounds echoing from the gym each evening after school. The G.A.A. tournaments, involving any girl in high school who enjoys sports, always draw enthusiasm from the active par- ticipants. In the fall, the members could be seen behind the school kicking each other and a little round ball. This is the time for the soccer games. When the days became too cold for outside activity the girls turned to the sport of basketball. ln the spring, mush- ball games were squeezed in between May Day practices. Girls who support these tournaments are rewarded with miniature emblems and letters. according to the number of points they have gathered. This year the G.A.A. sponsored several diversions to swell their treasury. In Novem- ber they held the Turkey Trot -a Thanks- giving dance. You may have noticed the victims of circumstances who dared not sit the following day. Under the leadership of Miss May, the sponsor, and the officers, president Ianice Hanley, vice president Alene Roll, secretary Helen Cvalia, and treasurer Carolyn Steph- ens, the G.A.A. has had a successful year. LEADERS CLUB Each year, girls with outstanding athletic ability and leadership are chosen as members of the Leaders Club. These girls fulfill their position by performing various duties in the gym classes, such as taking the roll, checking showers. refereeing games, and instructing the freshmen. They also take charge of G.A.A. tournament games after school. As a reward for their work, the leaders attend the annual 'Play Day, where sports- minded high school girls throughout the county meet for a day of fun and friendship. Frank Rogers. a newcomer in the teacher ranks, was chosen as coach. A large turnout of aspirants greeted Coach Rogers at the first practice. early in March. Workoiits were held in the gymnasium until the weath- er permitted outside drills. The scene of activity was then shifted to the athletic fielcl. The harriers participated in two dual meets and in the VV.P.I.A.L. meet. VVith some ex- perienced runners returning and enthusiasm increasing, track is regaining the position it once held-that of a major sport in Beaver High School. The lettermen were: Conlon. The response was good and practice was begun soon after the open- ing of school. Each night a crew of lightly clad aspirants could he seen starting on a two and a quarter mile trek out Gypsy Glen. The first meet took place on September 30, when Amhridge furnished the opposition, The team then traveled to New Castle, following which they met Brentwood. Canonshurg. New Castle, and Amhridge. Due to the lack of ex- perienced runners. the team met with little success. With increasing interest. however. the future for cross-country looks bright. Lettermen for the 1947 season were: R. Strenger, Loxley. Oakes. Torp, Van Nial- deghem. Pendy. Strouss. First and Ten One sweltering day in the middle of Au- gust, Coach Peter B. Kane called for candi- dates for the football squad. Although the weather was fit only for swimming, a large group of aspirants donned the traditional moleskins and began practice under the ex- perienced eye of Coach Kane. Assisted by Iames Cutri, who came to Beaver from Gir- ard, Pa., where his grid and cage teams had compiled an excellent record, Coach Kane put the squad of about 50 through their paces for a week Lettermen Tom Brodigan Stan Boden Bob Staub and Tom Kissick formed the nucleus of the 1947 team. The athletes showing the most promise were selected to journey to Grove City for a week of intensi- fied drilling on the college campus. During this week the squad, now reduced to 33 men. ate, slept, talked, and played only football. By the end of the week the team was beginn- ing to click. STAGE CREW There are many groups around our high school that bring honor, glory, publicity, and such to the school. Elsewhere in this book we have presented appropriate tribute to those groups-the athletic teams, band, orchestra, and many others. Behind the scenes might be correctly used to describe this group fat the risk of being accused of punningl. Actually that is where this group does most of its fine work. Unheralded and unsung they go about their tasks of presenting fine stage settings, changes of scenery, lighting and sound ef- fects to ensure the success of the various pro- ductions put on behind the footlights. May we stop here long enough to say A'Well done, boys, your work is seen and ap- preciated, even if you aren't in evidence dur ing a performance. P. A. SYSTEM ln its first full year of operation our P.A. system has literally become indispensable in our high school. Something would surely seem amiss if we dicln't hear those two fa- milar notes followed by, Here are the no- tices for this morning , shortly after the tardy bell rings, or if we didn't hear 'AThe devotions, this morning. will be conducted by the Tri-Hi-Y. Don Kennedy and Ed Freeland have been selected to take over much of the operation of the system, but Mr. Linn can attest how many steps it has saved him. From his office he can contact anyone, anywhere in the building, the gym, or the auditorium within a matter of seconds. A new tradition has been started this year. Each Monday morning the devotions are presented from the office of the Superin- tendent. With new uses being found for it almost continuously, it will not be long before the P.A. system will be as necessary in our school as our textbooks and other tools of instruction. Y-5... -., We Take Our Leave As the doors of our high school life are closing behind us, the time has come to put into action all the ideas we have absorbed in these formative years together. But before we close our 'iBook of Reflections let us pause to reminisce on our last four years. Our freshman year found us deep in the enthusiasm of a new experience. Things were different and we felt important, yet we were awed by the upperclassmen. We liked study halls and assemblies. Dances and parties pro- vided a chance for us freshies to exhibit our social graces. The second year, we took on a little more responsibility. We entertained the freshmen at a Frosh-Soph Hop and then showed our school spirit by sponsoring the annual MFoot- ball Dance . At last we were eligible to at- tend the i'Prom. Yes, we were catching on to the life of the school. Another year and we became upperclass- men. Seven periods a day provided more study halls, but school started earlier. Our subjects became more advanced, and we di- vided into more specific sections. The class worked hard on the magazine sales, and then put over a super Cinderella Ball with some of the receipts. And don't forget our first at- tempt at the stage. We wowed them with A Date With Iudyf' Finally, we advanced to the coveted posi- tion as Seniors. We managed to squeeze classes in between extra-curricular activities. Plans for the future were formulated and we began to work a little harder. The Class of 1948 was taking its place in the annals of Beaver High. We, as a class, should thank the people who have helped make these four years of opportunity profitable and pleasurable. The ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Photography-Graule Studios, Rochester. Pa. Engraving-Iahn 8 Ollier, Engraving Co., Chicago, Ill. Printing--Craftsmen-Zeigler Co., Butler, Pa, Covers-Craftco-Kurtz Bros., Clearfield, Pa. tax payers have given us, through taxes, the buildings and tools with which to work. The school board and administration have chart- ed the various courses of study. Our instruct- ors have wisely led us along the subjects we have chosen. ln those classes we have tried to develop broadminded thinking and demo- cratic ideas. Something would be amiss if we passed on without saying a few words about those who keep the building warm, clean, and cheerful-the custodians of the high school. Always alert to keep the buildings looking their best so we get the best possible environ- ment in which to work. We now extend our many thanks to them for their troubles, and were sorry for things we did that caused them a lot of extra work. And so, as usual, our custodians close the doors of Beaver High after our graduation. VVhen they are opened next September, we will not be among those entering. Another group will take our place, but as we go out in life, it will be our privilege to reflect on the many pleasant days we spent in B.l'l.S. CLIFF AND FRANK ... fm ..-..1-b 1k...na...m3,n.
