l llJll.-AlI1fN Mr. W. W. Paterick Whenever the word Shingas is mentioned, invariably one name comes to mind--the name of Mr. Paterick. Because of his work as adviser to the Shingas staff the last five years, Beaver High School has had a yearbook of which it can be justly proud. His success in this activity is best explained by an understanding of his preparation for and interest in extra-curricular work. Born in Hastings, Cambria County, he finished his public school educa- tion there before taking a job in New York City with the Western Electric Company. After three years of work there, he returned to his home state and attended Indiana State Teachers College from which he was graduated in Jan- uary, l929. ln the following year and a half he was employed by the East Mc- Keesport and Forest Hills School Districts as music supervisor and instrumental instructor. In l93 l , after taking additional work in social studies and science, he came to Beaver as civics and history teacher in Junior High School and as director of the Junior High orchestra and Senior High band. Four years later he was transferred to the high school where he taught English, music, social studies, and journalism. Aside from his teaching schedule he served as a class sponsor several times, as Student Senate adviser, and as adviser of the Echo. For the last five years he has had complete supervision of the Shingas and in that time there has been a marked improvement in our yearbook. Always on the watch of current trends and ever alert for chances to im- prove the annual, he formulates plans a year ahead to give each succeeding class the chance to produce a book newer, different, better. ln grateful appre- ciation of his many services to the school, the development and improvement of the yearbook, and his valuable advice and untiring efforts in the publica- tion of our book, we, the Class of I944, dedicate this volume of the Shingas to Mr. Paterick.

Too often a class never appreciates the full value of school until the day of graduation. ln this building, the scene of our high school life, were spent many happy enjoyable days. Lasting friendships were formed here, much work was accomplished, and many activities were engaged in. Thus it is with a mixed feeling of regret on leaving and happiness in having new worlds to conquer that we round out our high school career.

Little do we realize throughout the year just how much time and effort our sponsors and advisers devote to us. They work behind the scenes un- acclaimed and almost unknown. We, of the senior class, wish to here ac- knowledge the services rendered us this year by Mrs. Cummins, Mr. Paterick and Mr. Smith. These three have helped us in all the varied activities which must be undertaken by any senior class. Sales campaigns, dances, the pub- lishing of a yearbook, and numerous other projects connected with our com- mencement-all were helped and guided along by our sponsors and advisers. Our most sincere appreciation is extended to those individuals whose mature advice and guidance has enabled us to bring our high school career to a suc- cessful conclusion.
