ngm-ism-igm-iem-ieai i TIBER BEAVER FALLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA VOLUME LXV In constructing the 1981 TIGER yearbook, we have used one of the most modern technolgical advancements known in publishing today. Our cover this year was designed with the help of laser photo art. However, as we progress into a new era of technology, we must not forget our past. The 1981 TIGER Staff, therefore, has tried to capture the best memories that we have all experienced here at B.F.S.H.S. Since we were limited to only two hundred pages, we could not include every picture, idea, or piece of writing we had, but we do hope that everyone will enjoy the 1981 TIGER yearbook as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career; however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. 46 ALEENE VALLELONGA HIGHEST HONORS STEVEN HORNACEK PATRICIA RILEY LYNN MAHON ED TRN TERRI MATTSSON-BOZE Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strenght of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you. no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God. whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. — Max Ehrmann DENNIS VAN HORN LISA YOHO 47 HIGH HONORS FIRST ROW: SHARON LASKO. SUSAN JARVIS. LU ANN GUZZETTI SECOND ROW: ROBERT FLEISCHMAN. TIM BIRD. SCOTT LEWIS. At first, it was very hard to get some friends, but when the year was coming to an end, I got to know more and more people. From the beginning, many cheered me up when I was down and helped me out when I didn’t understand what those crazy Americans were doing. I found out that BFHS is a wonderful school with wonderful people, and for one year, I was allowed to share the happiness and good feeling you get in this high school. For this, I would like to thank everybody — the administration, the faculty, my fellow students, and, last but not least, my great family. Without their love and support, it all would have been much more difficult. I’m very thankful! Het ga je goed. Vaarwel! (I wish you well, farewell). As you read your last chapter on Big Beaver Falls Area School District, and I start reading the first. I am happy to have this opportunity to congratulate all of you for your successes, accomplishments, and triumphs. After graduation many of you will enter an occupation while others will continue with their educations. Regardless of the course you may follow, many of the joys and memories of high school days will linger on in your hearts and minds. However. as you grow older, your duties and responsibilities will progressively increase. As parents and citizens, the responsibility of providing for your family and the obligation of being an active civic member of the community will be yours. Don’t become totally engrossed in earning a living — take time to live. TAKE TIME Take time to live: It is the secret of success. Take time to think: It is the source of power. Take time to play: It is the secret of youth. Take time to read: It is the foundation of knowledge. Take time for friendship: It is the source of happiness. Take time to laugh: It helps to lift life’s load. Take time to dream: It hitches the souls to the stars. Take time to God: It is life’s only lasting investment. — Fred Helsabeck May each of you experience success and happiness in whatever endeavor you pursue. Sincerely yours. E. J. Season highlights included a four game winning streak in section play and a defense which held its opponents to less than two touchdowns. In exhibition play, the Fighting Tigers and the New Brighton Lions fought to a 7-7 deadlock in the season opener. The Lions were WPIAL runners-up in AA play. New Castle was the other exhibition opponent. The Red Hurricanes, a Quad A team, defeated the Tigers, 24-16, only after a furious fourth quarter, highlighted by two long touchdown bombs from Frank Campagna to Joe Harris. In the section opener, the Tigers defeated a highly rated Montour football team. Jeff Cook rambled for an eighty yard score in a tough defensive battle that the Tigers lost to Hopewell. Troy Mefferd highlighted the game with a forty-two yard field goal. The Tigers then rolled off four straight victories over Beaver, Sharon, Ellwood City, and Blackhawk. The defense allowed only thirty-nine points in those victories while the offense rolled up eighty-six points. In the Beaver game, the Tigers looked impressive until a late score by the Bobcats on a fumble provided a score closer than the game and statistics indicated. The Fighting Tigers totally dominated the Sharon game as they rolled to an impressive 28-7 victory. Beaver Falls blew out Ellwood, 24-6, as Joe Harris and Jeff Cook both ran for over 125 yards each. Beaver Falls had a tough time at Blackhawk as the Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 half-time lead. In the second half, the Tigers roared back to score twenty points and seal up the victory. In the last two games against play-off bound teams, the Tigers fared well. The Tigers were winning until the fourth quarter, led by a stalwart defense and ten points by the offense. Center then exploded for nineteen fourth quarter points to put the game out of reach. WPIAI runner-up, Aliquippa, struggled to defeat the Fighting Tigers in the season final. Troy Mefferd was named to the first team for the second year in a row, while Joe Harris, Jim Crees, Lonnie Johnson, Angelo Sabino, Roger Robinson, and Jeff Cook were named to the second team. Frank Campagna and Rick Zuk received honorable mention. This year’s most valuable players were seniors, Jeff Guzie, Joe Harris, and Lonnie Johnson. Ed Brenzo received the Greg Mitchell Award, and this year’s Scholar Athlete Award went to Ed Trn. Since the Tigers have much experience returning in skilled positions, next year, we can look forward to another terrific season. 128 FOOTBALL First Row: Coach Godsen, J. Veon, J. Sabino. C. Ellis. L. The Beaver Falls High School Tiger Basketball Team again had a successful season. The Tigers, led by Ron Rowan, compiled a 19-11 season record. Coach Frank Chan had perhaps done his best job of coaching this year with only one returning letterman. For the third straight year, the Tigers captured the Section 2-AAA Title. Though facing some of the toughest competition in the last five years, the Tigers won the section in a tie-breaker with New Castle by the score of 65-54. The Tigers completed their exhibition season with a record of 7-5, including a visit to the prestigious Las Vegas Tournament where the Tigers suffered three of those losses. Though the Tigers lost three of their first four section games, they came on strong to win the section. In playoff action, the Tigers defeated the Fox Chapel Foxes. Seniors, Steve Taylor and Ron Rowan, and junior, Carliss Jeter, led the attack. The Tigers lost the next game to the Center Trojans, 86-81, despite 36 points by Rowan. The Tigers ended their season with a tough loss to Bethel Park. Congratulations to Ron Rowan who was selected to the First Team All State, who was named M.V.P. of Section 2- AAA, who was selected to the First Team Section 2-AAA All Stars, and who played in the Dapper Dan Roundball Tournament and the Kentucky Derby Basketball Classic; to Steve Taylor who was selected to the Section 2-AAA All Stars and who played in the Quigley Classic; and to Junior, Carliss Jeter who made the Second Team of Section 2-AAA All Stars. Good Luck to the whole team and especially to Ron Rowan who received a basketball scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. The girls upheld Beaver Falls’ fine basketball tradition by going undefeated in the section and finishing with a 22-4 record. With preseason losses only to Moon and a tough Quaker Valley team, the girls rolled over the rest of their opponents, including the tough Aliquippa Quips. The Tigers then opened section play with impressive victories over Sharon. Butler, New Castle. Ambridge, and Blackhawk, the highlight coming when the girls wrapped the section title with a win over the second place Bridgers. Then rolling, the Tigers started the W.P.I.A.L. Playoffs with a 43-40 win over a highly ranked Valley team, and a 58-56 victory over Norwin. Next came a disappointing 44-46 loss to the W.P.I.A.L. champs of Baldwin. The girls bounced back in the P I.A.A. Playoffs by defeating Carrick, 39-33. However, a GREAT season ended with a 51-59 loss to state runner-up, Altoona. Seniors, Mary Jo Kalish, Sue Cox, and Connie Slappy were voted to the All-Section First Team, with junior, Kim Steals, selected to the Second Team. Sue Cox was Co- M.V.P., and Coach Coach Ryan was voted the Coach of the Year. Cox, Kalish, Slappy, and Liz Harris were selected to play in the Quigley Classic, with Sue Cox capturing the M.V.P. award. Slappy, Steals, Kalish, and Cox were selected to the Blackhawk Christmas Tournament Team, with Mary Jo Kalish capturing M.V.P. honors. TIGER BAND Keeping to tradition, the Beaver Falls Tiger Marching Band spent many long, grueling hours this summer on the school’s parking lot, practicing various marching formations and tunes. After much effort, the band members perfected their routines and were ready to begin the busy football season. The drill team and majorettes also worked hard, under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Conley; Lynn Mahon, captain; Holly Anderson, Holly Harrison and Tina Jones, co-captains; and Lori Walker, head majorette. The girls learned to experiment and work together to perform many exciting routines. Cindy Gill was the band’s feature twirler, capturing not only the audience’s eyes but the title, Miss Majorette of Pennsylvania at the intermediate level. After the football season had drawn to a close, the band toned down its sound to the concert level. The Concert Band held their annual Winter Concert on February 18. A few of the selections played were ‘'Vaquero,” “Valdres,” “Gua-dacana March,” “From Sea to Shining Sea,” and “Adagio and Allegro,” from Sonata, No. 1, featuring a duet by Chris Vallelonga and Sue Hunt. The Jazz Band did “their thing” by performing such songs as “In the Mood.” “Movin’ Out,” Night Winds,” and “Bandstand Boogie.” This year, the Jazz Band featured Kim Haskins as its vocalist and started a dance group, the Jazz Plus. Immediately after the Winter Concert, the Concert Band began to work diligently for their Spring Concert. They performed such tunes as “A Chorus Line,” “Homage To the U.S. Navy,” “Bugler’s Holiday,” “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorites,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The Jazz Band ended their evening by playing some very fine Glenn Miller tunes, such as “A String of Pearls, and “Moonlight Serenade.” Even with their busy football and concert seasons, the band was able to participate in many special activities. Throughout the year, they marched in many parades and invitational festivals. The most prestigious invitation came from President Jimmy Carter, when he visited Beaver Falls. The climax of the 1980-1981 school year was an awards banquet and a trip to Kings Dominion in Virginia on April 24 and 25. The band members had to spend many long hours raising money to use for these special events, but with the dedication and help of the band boosters, headed by Mrs. Becky Carothers, Mrs. Conley, Mr. Hunter and his staff, and with the band officers, they were able to attain their goals. This year’s band officers were Bob Fleischman, president; Tim Bird, vice president; Aleene Vallelonga, secretary; and Kelly Newman, treasurer. The band had a long, busy year, but to each band member, the time spent in practicing and performing was very rewarding and satisfying. 152 HONORS Front: ALEENE VALLELONGA (District. Geneva. The Beaver Falls High School Concert Choir, the Madrigals, the Mixed Chorus, the Boys’ Quartet, and Essence, along with their director Mr. Bierer, are to be commended for their excellent work. The Madrigals is a select group of students who performed for open house held here at B.F.S.H.S. Along with the Concert Choir and the Mixed Chorus, the Madrigals recorded their Christmas Concert held on December 18 for broadcasting on WBVP. A few selections performed were “Fanfare for Christmas Day,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “The Christmas Song.” Mr. Bierer and our Choral Department sponsored a recital featuring many of our outstanding Choral students. The recital, which was held on March 26, was well received. The Concert Choir held their Annual Spring Concert on May 21. Some of the selections performed were “The Creation,” “Fanfare for a Festival,” “American Trilogy,” and “Just the Way You Are.” The Mixed Chorus, com- posed of freshmen preparing for Concert Choir, and the Madrigals also performed. Essence, a group of seven girls, along with the Boys’ Quartet, chosen by Mr. Bierer, performed at numerous civic and social functions. A few of the songs they performed were “Mr. Sandman,” “Seems Like Old Times,” “Walkin’ Blues,” and “Hava Nagela.” A new feature in which the groups did a hat and cane routine to “The Old Soft Shoe” was a “show-stopper” at all performances. Audrey Strathmann served as president of the Concert Choir, while Tim Bird served as vice president. Melanie Channels served as secretary-treasurer. Tami Miller served as president of the Madrigals this year; Eileen Lindsay served as her vice president; and Pricilla Tisdale was secretary-treasurer. For Mixed Chorus, Marty Goldinger was president; Kim Majors was vice president; and Susan Fowler was secretary-treasurer. We would like to thank Mr. Bierer and his students for making this an exciting year for vocal music in our school. 161 ESSENCE Mr. Bierer. D. Holiday, C. Lombardo. K. Majors, E. Lindsay. L. Quest. A.
