BEAVER FALLS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA VOLUME LXIII TIGER 79 THE ORANGE AND THE BLACK Although Brighton always favors The Crimson and the Gold And Maroon and Gray are colors That make the Beaver Bold, We will own the lilies slender. Nor honor shall they lack, While the Tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. Through the four long years of high school Midst the scene we know so well As the mystic charms to knowledge We vainly seek to spell We will win athletic victories On the football field or track. Still we'll work for dear old high school And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o'ertake us. Mingling fast our locks with gray. Should our dearest hopes betray us. False fortune fall away. Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our mem'ries back And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the Orange and the Black. As we approach the future, let us not forget the memories of the past. Through the following pages, we of the 1979 TIGER Staff sincerely hope that this yearbook will give each of you pleasure and enjoyment in the many years ahead and will bring back fond memories of the old as well as the new. For Don Our human sense Of human events Tells us that Railing are places For finding each other or Greeting friends or Saying goodbye. Each day. Each student and Each faculty member Touches our railings Innumerable times squared To create a kind of Kinetic equation of force That helps to bind us together. On this morning. We wrap our fingers tightly Around the brown pipe Of the railing And wait And hope. But its usually comforting parallels Are cold From the final subtraction Of life. He stood each day On the second or third floor levels On the north side of the commons At his spots on the railings. Sometimes he had camera in hand. Sometimes, pointing, with a student Or fellow teacher at his side. He would angle for focus. Calculate distances. And set exposures To stop us ail At our best. In our happiest moments. His pictures, Like his life, Were used To dedicate the railing He shared Each day With us. And what do we do now about Unfinished equations and Undeveloped film and The touch Of friendly hands Now missing at the railing? We can be angry with our own mortality. We are. We can be hurt by the unfair timing of Death We are We can be grief-stricken over loss. We are. We can remember life. We do. Our human sense Of human events Tells us that Railings are places For greeting friends or Saying goodbye or Finding each other. To many of us here at B.F.H.S., Mr. Donald J. Hicks will always be remembered as an understanding friend and a very fine teacher, who constantly expressed a genuine interest and concern for all his students. In addition to teaching for twenty-eight years, Mr. Hicks spent many long hours as the Tiger Yearbook Advisor, as the Tiger Yearbook Photography Advisor, and as the treasurer of the Beaver Falls Teachers' Credit Union. Year after year, he devoted so much of his time outside of the classroom to taking pictures of so many different school activities. To those of us who have called him friend and teacher, we shall truly miss his concern, his courage, his humor, his help, and especially, his guidance. First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Pietro, Mrs. Riley, Mr. Nardone and especially my counselor, Mr. Dunfee, for their help. This year opened to me a new view of the world. This experience in my life made me discover a different language, different habits of living and, most of all, new people. It wouldn't have been the same without all of your help. I came with a serious problem with the English language and its adaptation to my life. I realize that if I learned English, it's mostly because of all of you, because you cared to repeat and gave me some of your time. I really enjoyed the football and basketball games. I found here a winning school. The right words do not seem to come easily to tell you thank you for your patience, your help, your confidence, but for the best you gave me — your friendship. If you ever come up to Canada, just stop by. You'll surely be welcomed. Salut! Love, Marie MARIE-IOSEE CARON % On behalf of everyone at B.F.H.S., The Tiger Yearbook Staff would like to acknowledge Lesley Greenwood from England and Vincent Tafur from Ecquador and regret that they were unable to spend the entire year at B.F.H.S. We all enjoyed the time we spent with them and with Marie-losee Caron from Canada and Katia Shaian from Iran. Throughout the year, Katia, Marie, Lesley, and Vince have enriched our school by sharing with us their countries' languages, customs, and traditions. We thank all of them for this unique opportunity and wish them all the very best. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Dear Tigers: Thank you for being so kind and friendly, and thanks, especially for your patience. I really had a great time in Beaver Falls with you in this high school. I know I'll miss all of you a lot when I go home to my country. Beaver Falls is my second home, and I can never forget all the crazy things like plays, pep rallies, football and basketball games. Living here has given me the opportunity to understand a different way of life. I want to thank Mr. Dunfee and everyone that has helped me make it through the year. Under the direction of Head Coach Larry Bruno, who will retire after 32 years of coaching, the Tigers went undefeated this year in conference play while capturing the MAC Championship. They continued on into the WPIAL Playoffs, knocking off both Carlynton and Wilkinsburg, before being defeated by Knoch in the Championship Game. The Tigers were led on the field by senior quarterback, Mike Nardone. Out of 97 passes attempted, Mike completed 65 for 1369 yards and 16 touchdowns. Leading the Tiger ground attack was junior, Dwight Collins. Glenn Dennison, the leading pass receiver, caught 26 passes for 634 yards and 8 touchdowns. The team began their 11 game winning streak by upending arch rival, Blackhawk, 27-14. The following week, the Tigers trounced Freedom by a score of 34-0. Leading the Tiger scoring was Dwight Collins. The defense recorded another shutout in Ellwood City with the final score, Beaver Falls 12, Ellwood 0. Mike Langston ran back an interception for a touchdown, and Kevin Brown led the ground attack. The Big O really started to roll. They put 50 points on the board against Sharon, and the defense held the Bengals to 18 points as the Tigers prepared for their big confrontation with Beaver. At Reeve's Stadium the Tigers defeated Beaver 34-28 in the winning minutes on a halfback pass from Collins to Dennison. They captured the top spot in the MAC race where they would remain for the rest of the year. They continued their pace at Rochester as they destroyed the Rams 55-6. Everyone got into the scoring act as the Tigers put on an impressive offensive show. The following week, in the mud and rain, the Tigers won the Homecoming Game by a score of 18-0. On Center's home field the following Saturday, the Tigers started off fast. Dwight Collins took the opening kickoff on a reverse, returned it for a touchdown, and from then on, the Tigers never fell behind as they scored 28 points and Center only gained 8. To tune up for the playoffs, the Tigers traveled to rival New Brighton to battle for the Little Brown |ug. Collins scored 5 touchdowns; Beaver Falls won 40-13; and the jug stayed in Beaver Falls. Carlynton was the opponent in the first round of the playoffs. The offense put points on the board early, and the defense held off a late rally by the Cougars to win 19-14. It was on to North Allegheny where the Beaver Falls Tigers faced the Wilkinsburg Tigers. The Fighting Tigers completely dominated Wilkinsburg both offensively and defensively. Led by the running of Collins, the passing of Nardone, and the super catches by Glenn Dennison and Ivan Howard, the offense put 34 points on the board to win 34-14. The Tigers visited Pitt Stadium for the Championship encounter with Knoch. The Tigers were in the game for three quarters but could not hold off the inspired Knoch Knights. Two late touchdowns were not enough as the Tigers went down to defeat for the first time all year by the score of 40-15. The Fighting Tigers finished the season as the number two team in the entire WPIAL. Coach Bruno and all the players should be commended for a fantastic season, one that will be remembered-for many years. 129 Ralph Burroughs runs past defender. Coach Bruno gives offense instructions. They captured the section championship without a loss, the first Tiger team to accomplish that feat since 1923, and went on to win the WPIAL Championship. Before bowing out in the quarter finals of the PIAA Championship, the Tigers compiled a 29-2 record, the best in the history of Fighting Tiger basketball. In exhibition, the Tigers were victorious over Bra-shear, Peabody, highly touted Schenley, Beaver, West-inghouse, and Latrobe. Over the Christmas holidays, the Tigers participated in two tournaments. In the Farrell Tourney, they defeated Mercer and host Farrell to capture the championship. In the johnstown Tourney, the Tigers defeated DeMartha Catholic, the number one team in the nation, before losing in the championship to number two ranked Philadelphia Overbrook. During section play, the Tigers defeated Sharon, Blackhawk, Butler, Farrell, Ambridge, and New Castle twice each to compile their perfect 12-0 record and gain a berth in the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs. In the first round, the Tigers defeated Hopewell 54-47. They faced Fox Chapel in the quarter-finals, and won easily 80-65. A 62-53 victory over Wilkinsburg propelled the Tigers into the championship game against a tough Burrell team. In a hard fought game, the Tigers pulled out an exciting come-from-behind victory in the closing seconds, to defeat Burrell 55-54. With this victory, the Tigers became champions of the W.P.I.A.L. Continuing in the P.I.A.A. tournament, the Tigers defeated Meadville, Oliver, and Eric Prep. Then, they faced a fine Valley team, in the quarterfinals of the state. Although they played a fine game, the Tigers went down to defeat, 60-66, for only the second time all year. Congratulations to the team for the Section and W.P.I.A.L. The band practiced marching and memorizing music, and after two weeks of hard work, they were ready to start their marching season. Mrs. Ruth Conley, advisor of the drill team, worked with the girls and helped them in perfecting their routines. Kathy Harris, Miss Majorette of Pennsylvania, was feature twirler for the band. After an extra long marching season, the band went inside to begin practice for their Winter Concert on February 13, 1979. Completing their successful Winter Concert, the band immediately began to work on music for their Spring Concert on May 9,1979. This year, eight members of the band were selected for the Geneva Honors Band. They were seniors, Tad Greig, trombone; Dave Johnson, tuba; Elaine Hornacek, flute; and Ken Powell, drums; juniors, Bonnie Merrymon, saxophone; sophomores, Aleene Vallelonga, clarinet; Jeff Burke, trombonium; and Bob Fleischman, trumpet. Four of these musicians, Dave, Tad, Jeff and Aleene, were also selected for district and regional bands. The Tiger Stage Band also had an exceptional year. The highlight of their season was participating in several Stage Band Festivals sponsored by Black-hawk High School and the Beaver Falls Band Boosters. The band held their annual banquet at the Holiday Inn, where they presented Mr. Hunter with a gift of their appreciation. On May 14, 1979, the band traveled to Cedar Point for a well-deserved rest. The band put in many long hours of hard work, and with the help of their director and band officers, they have had another terrific season. This years officers were Jay Carother, President; Cindy Montani, Vice-President; Beth Laderer, Secretary; and Tad Greig, Treasurer. Some of the songs performed by the Concert Choir were Praise the Lord Ve People, America Our Heritage, and Oh, Happy Day with a solo by Anita Grant. Other soloists for the Concert Choir were Karen Dreher and Darryl McMillion. The Madrigals performed songs such as Adoramus Te, Annabel Lee, Me and My Shadow, Little David Play on your Harp, with solos performed by Tammy Miller, Karen Boak, and Linda Gibson, along with a duet by Kim and Brenda Guthrie. The Mixed Chorus performed songs such as Pick-a-Little, Going Down the Road, Nine Hundred Miles, and Sentimental Journey with a solo sung by Janet Orlowski. Aside from their concert, all of the choral groups were active around the area. On May 18, they went on a trip to Cedar Point, and at Christmas, the Madrigals sang for a radio program which was aired on two community stations. This year's officers for Concert Choir were president, Karen Dreher; vice president. Queen Raines; secretary-treasurer, Tammy Miller. For the Madrigals, the officers were president, Dave Johnson; vice president, Karen Boak; and secretary-treasurer, Nancy Jasinski. For the Mixed Chorus, Chris Vallelonga served as president, Jo Ellen Fairley as vice president, and Jill Carothers was their secretary-treasurer. We wish to thank Mr. Bierer and the members of all the choral groups for all their hard work, and we appreciate their talents. 161 They got married, and then there was none. 162 Phillip Lombard aids Mrs. Rogers to the couch. DANCING IN THE DARK, WALKING THROUGH THE PARK, AND REMINISCING. In producing the 1979 Tiger Yearbook, we have tried to capture the unique togetherness we all shared here at B.F.H.S. Tomorrow, we will only have memories of this togetherness, and if the Tiger Staff had only one wish, it would be this — that we have produced a book of fond memories, never to be forgotten. Our sincere thanks goes to Miss Geraldine Selby, our yearbook advisor, for all her time, patience, and understanding. To our yearbook staff, we would like to extend our deep appreciation for their useful ideas and for a year of cherished memories. Most of all, we truly valued all the help and time that Mr. Donald Hicks gave us with our photography throughout the year. We would also like to extend a special thanks to all our Tiger photographers, to Mr. Michael Sprock of Michael Charles Studio, to Mrs. Pat Gerard of Stanley's Studio, and especially to Mr. Damon Turek, Mr. David Murray, Mr. George Potter, and Mr. Steve Rhodes, who helped us greatly with our photography after Mr. Hicks' death. Our final thanks goes to our yearbook representative, Mr. C.T. Miller, who helped us develop and complete our book. In closing, we would like to wish the very best of luck to future Tiger Staffs and hope that they have as much happiness as we have shared this year. Denise Dzura, Editor Mary Ann Rollins, Assistant Editor A TOUCH OF CLASS!
