BEAVER FALLS HIGH SCHOOL BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA VOLUME LXI From the moment we enter Beaver Falls High School and even after graduation, we have a certain pride in our school and ourselves. In four short years, the memories of hard work and special activities have been captured in our minds. To each of us, these memories will last forever. The 1977 TIGER Yearbook has been compiled of many unforgettable events. Throughout its pages, our TIGER staff has tried to show the fine character and spirit of Beaver Falls High School. The purpose of this book is to enable each of us to relive all the wonderful moments which have happened during this past year.. The staff sincerely hopes that the TIGER 'll will help all of us to recall the days of gladness 'neath the Orange and the Black. Cathy Richter Dianna Thumm Editor Assistant Editor THE ORANGE AND THE BLACK Although Brighton always favors The Crimson and the Gold And Maroon and Gray are colors That make the Beaver Bold, We will own the lilies slender, Nor honor shall they lack, While the Tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. Through the four long years of high school Midst the scenes we know so well As the mystic charms to knowledge We vainly seek to spell We will win athletic victories On the football field or track. Still we'll work for dear old high school And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o’ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray. Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortune fall away, Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our mem'ries back And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the Orange and the Black. 4 6 7 9 10 13 14 15 You will stand many times At a crossroad in life Just as you're standing now. And no one can tell you Which way to go . . . Or what you should do . . . or how. Yours is the choice . . . May you follow your dreams and believe in yourself all the way As you journey along With your eyes on the stars And with hope in your heart day by day. Seniors—59 Dear B. F. H. S. Tigers, This year has been a great experience for me. I have been very lucky to be able to stay in Beaver Falls. The people are very nice and friendly. Thailand and America stand in different parts of the world. Almost everything is different, and I had to learn many new things: the ways of life, customs, culture, food, and especially the weather. I never saw snow before, but I saw enough this year to make up for all the other years. Although I was very cold, I enjoyed skiing and ice skating very much. At first in B. F. H. S., I had a big adjustment because everything is different from the school in my country. I am studying to be a teacher, and in my school, we must wear uniforms and spend much time in the library. I received much help from my teachers, my host family, and all of my friends. So I would like to say, Thank you, to everyone for understanding and helping me. I will never forget my great year. Everything will be in my memory all the time. I hope to see all of you again. Under Mr. Ross' supervision as B. F.H.S.'s Athletic Director, Beaver Falls saw the establishment of all of the girls' athletic teams in our high school plus the addition of the boys' golf, crosscountry, tennis, and track teams. Faculty—125 DRAMA % CONCERT The Beaver Falls Tiger Band made an impressive showing by working extremely hard throughout this year. Summer practices gave the members a chance to start learning music for football season, but the real work began with band camp, at East Palestine City Park, East Palestine, Ohio. Here the band spent two weeks learning the music and marching routines for the half-time shows of many Tiger football games and numerous parades. A championship football team gave the band an even longer season than usual. A few of this year's most popular marching songs were Sky High, Mickey Mouse, and Blow Youi Whistle. Mrs. LaNave did an excellent job as advisor to the drill team and majorettes. as did Mary LaNeve and Cindy Cook, drill team’s co-captains, and Pam Binder, the majorette's captain. Finally, the long hours of marching in all kinds of weather came to an end, and the band prepared for the concert season. This year's concert, on May 3, featured the following selections: Sousa Spectacular, Symphonic Rock, Walt Disney Overture, Chicago: A Portrait in Sound, Get Up and Boogie, Romanya, a French horn solo by Dale Russell with Cece Cantlemi as accompanist, Stan Kenton in Concert, Selections from Shaft, Lassus Trombone, and Your Father's Mustache. The stage band also presented an exciting program, playing Caravan, Night BAND Train, Give It One, Woodchopper's Ball, and Hey Jude. The band participated in many important events this year, including the Geneva Homecoming Parade, North Hills High School Band Festival, and various firemen's parades. The stage band was also active, playing in festivals at Steel Valley, Fox Chapel, and Freedom High Schools. Also, for the first time the stage band performed for the West Hills Symphony Band's Annual Formal. Mr. David Hunter is to be congratulated for his hard work and great success as director of the band and stage band. Officers of the 1976-77 Tiger band are: president, Karen Gottschalk; vice-president, Kim McKeithen; secretary, Jerome Brown; and treasurer, Cindy Cook. The band would like to express their appreciation to the Beaver Falls Band Boosters, made up of band parents, concerned adults, and former and present band members. This organization sponsored the sub sales and other sales projects which helped pay for band activities, such as the Band Banquet, held on May 6. The Beaver Falls Tiger Band worked long and hard to have such a successful season and would like to thank everyone who contributed their time and efforts to make this a memorable year. The Christmas concert was presented on December 15 and was aired on Friday, December 24. The choir also went Christmas caroll- ing. The Spring Concert, the highlight of the year, was held on May 19. Some of the selections performed at these programs were Once in Love with Amy, Mood Indigo, In My Solitude, and Glory to God. The Mixed Chorus was made up of ninth graders preparing for Concert Choir. This year, for the first time, the Mixed Chorus performed as a separate group in the Spring Concert. 1 34 CHOIR J. The Tigers opened their exhibition season with a 28-18 victory over Chartiers Valley. Bob Linzey scored on an 82-yard run with 156 yards rushing. Against the tough team of North Catholic, the first Midwestern AAA opponent, the Tigers conquered the Trojans 28-7. Rain or shine, the Tigers always came through as they shutout Sharon 14-0 in the drenching rain. Coming from behind the Tigers overcame the powerful New Castle team 20-14 as the Tigers went 61 yards in the final 1:39 of the game on the passing of Jim D'Achille. D'Achille's 13- yard touchdown pass to Lance Walker came in the final seconds. Mark Veon's scoring on a pass from D'Achille was the big play against Hopewell as the Tigers pulled through with an 18-6 triumph. Erie Prep became the sixth victim of the Tigers as they were smeared 35-13. Dwight Collins had a 20 yard touchdown run and Tony Omogrosso caught two touchdown passes. Then, came the scoreless tie with Ambridge, the only blemish on the Tiger record. Beaver Falls played an excellent game with a 21-6 verdict over Aliquippa, who had lost only to Butler. The Tigers rolled up 23 first downs and 323 yards rushing. Collins had 95 yards rushing and a 44-yard run for a touchdown. TIGERS'' CAPTURE MAC C. Harris, B. Montagazzi, R. Hoover, D. Kittner, M. The Beaver Falls Tigers annihilated the Cougars 28-7. Veon had two touchdowns, while Linzey and Rich Halligan added six pointers. Dave Brewer, Automatic, kicked three conversions. Brewer's final overall record for the season was 24 out of 27 attempts. The last game of the season was the deciding game of who would be the Midwestern AAA champs. Even though the Tigers lost their key man on defense, Tony Mendicino, in the second period, they managed to compensate for Mendo's absence and went on to blow the number-one ranked Tornadoes away 14-6. The key play of the game was a 94-yard run by Linzey, who was helped by the good blocking of his teammates. Veon scored on a 2-yard dive for the Clencher. Defense was the name of the game for the Tigers. Beaver Falls then moved into the Playoffs ranked number two against the number-one ranked Penn Hills. Even though the Tigers never gave up, Penn Hills proved too powerful and defeated the Tigers 16-7. The outlook for next season looks just as bright as this season was. Although the record was a poor one, it does not reflect the great amount of talent on the team. There were four return- ing senior letter winners and one returning junior letter winner, who were the nucleus of a hard playing team. The girls played well, but fell victims to tough opponents. Next year's team will see three returning letter winners out of this year's nine, five of which are seniors. With the return of these hard working athletes and the fine new prospects coming up, next year's season has a bright outlook. 146 FIRST ROW— M. Gasper, J. Metheny, J. Krupa, B. Blythe. Three year letter winners are seniors, Jim Metheny and Jeff Turconi. Two year letter winner was sophomore, Bruce Blythe. Earning their first letters were senior, Joe Turconi, and sophomore, Jeff Krupa. With these returning letter-men, Coach Kinkead feels next season will be just as successful. The Fighting Tigers ended their season with twenty-six wins and three losses, the best in the history of Beaver Falls High School. The Junior Varsity had a great year too as they went undefeated under the new leadership of Coach A1 DeBona. A great way to go guys! The Chan Clan ended their exhibition play with an 8-0 record, including the semifinal and final victories over Peabody and Meadville to take the Meadville Tournament for the fourth straight year. Also among the eight wins was a great triumph over the Bullets of Brashear. Alvin Emol Gibson sparked the Tigers with thirty-three points, ten rebounds, and six assists. The Tigers breezed through the first half of Section 3 with seven wins and no losses. Alvin Gibson led in scoring for Beaver Falls with 134 points, Sam Scott second with 111 points, and Damon Bryant third with 93 points. In the opener of the second half of Section 3, the Tigers struggled through five overtimes to down New Castle 84-75. The next two games against Butler and Blackhawk were won easily by the Tigers. Then the Tigers tasted defeat, when Sharon pulled through with a 65-60 win over the Tigers. Farrell and Ambridge then came to town and fell victims to the Tigers, giving the Tigers Section 3 honors. When the Tigers moved into the W. P. I. A. L. competition, their key man on rebounds, Bob Jones, was tampered with a hip injury, and they were defeated by Fox Chapel in the finalgame. In the P. I.A.A. competition, the Tigers defeated Hickory 80-63 in the opener. It was here that Brashear was then eaten up a second time by the Tigers, 58-46. However, the Tigers fell victim to Norwin 62-58 in the semifinals of the P. I.A.A. Congratulations, Tigers and Coach Chan, for a superb season of basketball! Congratulations also to Alvin Gibson who was selected as M. V. Carolyn Young Pete Zwieryznski 195 The production of the 1977 TIGER YEARBOOK could never have been completed without the hard work and fine efforts of many people. Therefore, we have reserved this space to express our great appreciation to everyone involved. We would like to thank Miss Geraldine Selby, our yearbook advisor, for her good judgment and understanding in answering-all of our many questions. A grateful thank-you goes to the entire yearbook staff for their many creative and useful ideas. Many, many thanks goes not only to our photography advisor, Mr. Donald Hicks, and his photography classes for taking and developing so many of our pictures, but also to our professional photographers, Mrs. Pat Gerard of Stanley's Studio and Mr. Michael Sprock of Michael Charles Studio. Finally, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. William Singer, our American Yearbook representative, for the expert advice he has given us throughout the year.
