falls high FaLLS, PENNSnV OluMEL THE ORANGE AND THE BLACK Although Brighton always favors The Crimson and the Gold And Maroon and Gray are colors That make the Beaver Bold, We will own the lilies slender, Nor honor shall they lack, While the Tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. Through the three long years of high school Midst the scenes we know so well As the mystic charms to knowledge We vainly seek to spell We will win athletic victories On the football field or track, Still we’ll work for dear old high school And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o’ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray, Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortune fall away, Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our mem’ries back And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the Orange and the Black. FOREWORD As we go through life, there are many events and moments to be remembered from our three long years of high school. By paging through this special book, the '76 Tiger Yearbook Staff hopes you will recall pleasant memories of this Bicentennial year. Through cheering at Friday night football games, organizing ring sales, painting chairs, getting new lockers, trying to make it to classes on time, missing buses, sitting through assemblies, listening to the morning announcements, attending club meetings, and dancing all night long at the prom, the BFHS students worked hard and proudly to uphold the name of the Tiger and to prove Beaver Falls has always been Someplace Special.” JUNIORS APPROACH JUNE AS THE STEP TO A NEW EXPERIENCE. Throughout the year the school board makes many decisions which affect the students and faculty at B.F.H.S. Working with the school baord, to administer the policies it establishes, is our superintendent, Mr. Stanley C. Brobeck. Mr. Brobeck, who now has the responsibilities of the assistnt superintendent in addition to his own, also oversees the plans for the new school building. Another man vital to the working of our school is the Director of Curriculum, Mr. William A. Smith. It is his responsibility to coordinate courses at the elementary and secondary levels. The members of the school board, Mr. Brobeck and Mr. Smith all devote a great deal of their time to improve the quality of our education. For all their time and effort, we at B.F.H.S. would like to express our appreciation. —John Wooden TRATION SCHOOL BOARD Seated: Steve Rhodes; Robert Veon, President; Stanley Brobeck, Superintendent. SMITH CURRICULUM COORDINATOR ADMINIS CHARLES PIETRO PRINCIPAL In his many functions as principal of B.F.H.S., Mr. Pietro’s main concern is always for his students. In his willingness to help, he becomes involved in all school activities, continually working for the best possible education for all students. Working with Mr. Pietro, the school board, and faculty members, are the assistant principals, Mr. Evan Nardone and Mrs. Laree Riley. Anxious to make learning a meaningful experience for everyone, Mr. Nardone guides and helps us constantly. Mrs. Riley believes that the quality of education we receive depends upon the amount of effort we put forth. To improve our school, she and Mr. Nardone spend much time working with all of our faculty members. Mr. Pietro, Mr. Nardone, and Mrs. Riley have all given us much help and advice this year, and for this, everyone at B.F.H.S. would like to say Thank ft TRATION EVAN NARDONE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL LAREE RILEY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Every individual has a place to fill in the world, and is important, in some respect, whether he chooses to be so or not. ■Nathaniel Hawthorne GUIDANCE - . -■ KNOW THYSELF —PLATO The Guidance Department here at Beaver Falls, directed by Mr. William Dunfee, has the year-round job of helping us to find the direction of our lives after high school. To this end, our guidance counselors are involved in informing us about various colleges suited to our needs and giving us advice about vocations open to us. They also help us while we are still in school by aiding us in forming our schedules for each year. When I was coming, I was very afraid of the people, school and how to integrate in the group, but now I realize I didn’t have any reason to be afraid. It has been a year of surprise and happiness. Of course, there has been bad things and bad news too, but at least, I have had all of you with me, and I'll never forget it. The only thing that has been worying me is that you give me so many things. You have done so many nice things for me, and there is nothing I can give you, just my friendship, but that is sincere. The school has been a great experience, because it is so much different from Spain, and here you have the chance to know many people and get friends. I have enjoyed so many different activities especially those such as football games which were new for me and filled me with so much excitement. The pep rallies and pretty cheerleaders were new too. I enjoyed meetings, banquets, caroling, dances and so many other new things. I am so grateful to Mr. Pietro, Mr. Nardone, Mrs. Riley, and Mr. Dunfee. Thanks to all the teachers, always helping and being so nice. For the students, I have a special place. All the words about my feelings for you would never be enough. This year is almost over; it has been so fast that I haven’t realized it. I'm going to leave here so many good friends, but I hope I’ll see you some day. Thanks to everybody for making this year possible. All the love from your Spanish friend, Marie Rosa M Dear Tigers, I am very happy for this opportunity to write some words in this book. I think Beaver Falls is really great. It means a great experience for me, especially to be a member of the football team. The main difference between my school in Austria and yours is that our school is a place to study, but here it is also a community. Finally, I want to say thanks to all of you, and I’ll never forget this fantastic year. Gerald Dear BFHS Tigers, This year has been the most wonderful, but also the fastest in my whole life. Too many beautiful things happened to me during these last few months that it is very hard for me to realize that time has come now to leave all the people and things that I learned to know and love. MY opinion of the United States has changed completely since I arrived here. When I think of what happened during this school year, it seems to me like a beautiful dream. I really want to thank everyone in the school, that not only made this experience possible but so positive. Many thanks to Mr. Pietro, Mr. Nardone, Mrs. Riley, all the teachers, but especially to all the students who really give the BFHS its spirit. Of course, the school atmosphere was a lot different than the one I used to know, for during all my school years I went to an all-girl school! Every event in the school was something new to discover, and always very exciting. I would like to spend a lot more time here, but I wish that many other foreign students will be as happy as I was among the people of your school. I also want to invite you to visit Belgium; you will always be welcomed in my house. Goodbye to everyone! The 75-76” edition of the Beaver Falls Fighting Tigers was one that was young but proved that they were of the same quality of Tiger teams of the past. In their first conflict of the season the Tigers battled a newcomer to the section, North Catholic. The Tigers looked good for a young team, but in the final minutes of the game their greenness showed, and the North Catholic team struck back to win 20-19. The second game was won by Beaver Falls on a forfeit from Sharon, 2-0. The next opponent was the strong team from New Castle. In the first half the Tigers were subdued, The Red Hurricanes ran at will. With the score 23-0 at the start of the second half, the Tigers began to roar, but it was too little, too late. Final score was New Castle, 30, and Beaver Falls, 12. The Hopewell Vikings were the next invaders of Tiger Territory” and walked away with a 21-10 victory as the Tigers still struggled to get things rolling. As the Tigers prepared for the game with Erie Prep, Coach Bruno reached to his bench and pulled out sophomore quarterback Jimmy D'Achille. The Tigers moved like a different team winning easily 20-6. Riding a 2-3 record, the Tigers evened things at 3-3 by defeating Ambridge 16-0. The newly reborn Fighting Tigers” then traveled to Aliquippa to take on the heavily favored Indians. Playing inspired football with a crushing defense, the Tigers upset the Quipps 14-7. The most controversial game of the season was the game at the North Western Field with our local rival, Blackhawk. The contest was close for four quarters with the only difference, a missed point by Blackhawk after a touchdown. With time running out and Blackhawk on the Tiger three yard line, the Alley Cats got tough and stopped the team from Someplace Special” with a loss of a yard. The Beaver Falls fans began to ceiebrate and count down the clock. The fighting Tigers had won 7-6, but a flag, after time had elapsed, gave Blackhawk a second chance. With no time left, the Cougars kicked a field goal. The last game of the season was against a tough Butler team whose only loss was to the eventual MAC champion, New Castle. Although the Tigers lost to Butler, the one bright spot was that the Big 0 put more points on the board than any team had done against Butler all year, including New Castle. The Tigers had indeed fought many long and hard battles during their season. Although the Tigers finished under fifty percent for the season, the youngness of this year’s team looks fruitful for the future. This season Coach Bruno had five lettermen; next season he will have three times as many. Come August of 76,” the MAC will hear the Fighting Tigers roar once more. Alvin Gibson heads into the last leg of the race. The 75 season never looked like a Golden One for the Tiger Runners, but in the usual Beaver Falls tradition, the team carried on the pride of the Orange and Black with the return of only two letter winners, senior Bob Whisnant and junior Alvin Gibson. Coach Chan had to rely mostly on the capabilities of inexperienced people. Although the season showed a record of three wins and eight losses, the team placed sixth at the Student Council Invitational and will return four lettermen in 76”. Jerry Eckhardt leads the way to the finish line. Chuck Connors finishes a hard race. 128 Athletic —129 GOLF Ed Campbell takes a second shot from a nice fairway lie. Sheridan had the low round of twenty-three players with a 77 at Sectional Qualifiers and tied for sixth out of fifty with a 79. Coach Kinkead has a fine future ahead of him with three freshmen, and one sophomore, along with the many experienced juniors. The sandtrap proves hazardous to Jeff Turconi. Tom Sheridan gets set to tee off. Ray Belczyk makes contact for a good shot. The '75 Tiger Golf Team won only two matches and lost six but will return four letter winners out of five starters in '76. The team was lead by junior three year letter winner, Tom Sheridan, and two year letter winners, Eddie Campbell, Jim Metheny, and Jeff Turconi. Golf Team First Row: J. Turconi, B. Blythe, M. For the second straight year, the Fighting Tigers, under the helm of Head Coach Frank Chan, had a strong pre-season as they ended 7-1. Among these seven wins were the semi-final and final game decisions over Bishop Boyle and Meadville to capture the Meadville Tournament for the third straight year. The section 3 opener found the Tigers still running hot as they downed Ellwood 77-53. They then lost close games to Butler and New Castle. Coming back home, the charges of Coach Chan played the role of the spoiler as they upset heavily favored Sharon 59-52 in overtime. The next game, things went badly as the Tigers shot poorly and lost to Black-hawk 58-43. However, showing what a good team can do, they bounced back to upset Farrell in a close contest 54-53. The first half then ended with a disappointing loss to Ambridge 71-70, leaving the Tigers three and four, and all but out of the section race. Playing Inspirational Basketball, the Tiger five ran off five straight victories before losing to Farrell. Included in this streak were wins over Ellwood, Butler, New Castle; a second upset of Sharon at Sharon; and a revenge on Blackhawk's earlier victory 61-49. After the loss to Farrell, Ambridge was the next victim as the Tigers ended the second half six and one. For the season they were nine and five and tied with Sharon for second honors in section 3AAA. 130 TBALL Gene Williams goes up and over the defender for a shot. Tim Wood shows good form on a tough backhand shot. Coach Sheffield’s '76 Tennis Team didn’t fair as well as was hoped; but nonetheless, they never gave up when they were down. With senior letter winners, Tim Wood and Ron Andino, and junior, Jim Metheny, playing the top three positions, the Tiger Netters seemed set for a successful season. Although the team finished 7-10, overall the experience gained by the underclassmen will help in the next few years. 133 Jim Metheny serves to awaiting opponent. Ron Andino awaits serve. But no matter how well the season goes, it’s not good enough when the Tigers can't repeat last year’s achievements of Section V and WPIAL Champs. Plagued by the loss of many seniors from last year's team. Coach Smartz had to start basically from scratch. After the first seven exhibition games, the Tigers were four and three and then went on to win the next six remaining encounters on the exhibition schedule. After losing the first two games of the league schedule to Ellwood and Hopewell, 6-5 and 10-7, respectively, they then knocked off their arch rivals, Blackhawk and Ambridge. The Tigers then dropped four straight—all in close games and hard decisions. The next two games were victories. One of which was against Blackhawk. However, the Tigers dropped the last two decisions of the year. Overall, the Tigers were 14 and 11, while finishing 4 and 8 for the league. The Tiger hitters were led by Dave Hornacek, followed by Rick Chiappetta and Mark Veon, who also was the leading pitcher. With many returning letter-men and the abilities of Coaches Smartz and Frankhouser, the '77 edition will again be a team of championship material. Dave Hornacek gives a strong delivery. 134 BALL Beaver Falls EXHIBITION Opponent 7 Riverside 3 5 New Brighton 2 2 Center 7 9 Rochester 6 3 Freedom 4 6 Freedom 3 0 Butler 12 12 Center 6 9 Neshannock 7 11 Neshannock 3 2 Monaca 0 3 Cornell 0 5 New Brighton 4 LEAGUE 5 Ellwood City 6 7 Hopewell 10 3 Blackhawk 2 7 Ambridge 0 6 Aliquippa 7 4 Beaver 9 7 Ellwood City 8 5 Hopewell 14 8 Blackhawk 7 3 Ambridge 1 5 Aliquippa 9 3 Beaver 4 Wins—14 Losses—11 A sliding Rick Chiappetta beats a close play at third. Because of its many new members, the team lacked experience even though it did have one returning letter winner, Senior Peggy Ross. The prospect for next year’s team is one of great expectations. There will be five returning letter winners. With hard work and practice, the Tiger Girls’ Volleyball Team next year could become a big threat in their section. The Beaver Falls Team shows Its superiority. The girls receive instructions before the gun. This year’s Girl’s Cross Country team ended its season with a two and one record. There were seven letter winners this year. Three of the girls, Anita Piccinini, Michele Browder and Mildred Thomas placed within the top ten at the All County Meet. These girls were just three of the eight person team under Coach Frank Chan who won first place in the Beaver County Recreation Cross Country Meet. Next year looks promising for the team because it is only loosing one letter winner, Senior Patti Ann Barnhart. With the rest of the six letter winners and many new runners, the Beaver Falls Girl’s Cross Country team may prove to be an upcoming sport at our school. 140 GYMNASTICS First Row: L. Guzzetti, M. The Beaver Falls Girl's Gymnastic Team has completed the '76 season undefeated. This is the second year in succession our girls have captured the Section V Championship. The team has a record of nineteen wins and no losses for the past two years. The girls are coached by Mr. Lynn Hill and Miss Debbie Caroll. This year the gym team will have one senior, Pam Turconi, leaving the team. The team consists of many young members and has three letter winners returning for competition next year. A freshman, LuAnn Guzzetti, set three school records on the uneven parrallel bars, in the vaulting competition and in allround scoring. LuAnn also competed in the State Finals and placed fifth in competition. With the returning team members and new brilliant gymnasts coming into the high school, our team will once again prove their powerful gymnastic ability. BASKETBALL Tigresses head down the floor displaying their fine ball handling. Senior, Flo Smith, puts it up for another goal. The Girl’s Basketball Team, under the supervision of Coach Karlin Ryan, had a season’s record of ten wins and six losses. This winning season was sparked by the most valuable player, a sophomore, Cathy Barrett. Playing basketball with skill was the girls’ most powerful weapon. They showed their knowledge of the sport in their fine game against Sharon. The team led until the fourth quarter, when Sharon’s team began using their height advantage over our girls, to win the game. The girl’s bas- ketball team, on the whole, handled the ball well, but their lack of height caused the girls to suffer their six losses. This year’s team had a total of nine letter winners. Eight of these athletes will be returning for a fine season next year. The only person not re- turning to see action next winter is senior, Flo Smith. With this great amount of experience, and the girls giving their usual hundred percent, the next year’s girl’s basketball team will prove their power in Section II play. 142 TRACK First Row: R. (Courtesy of THE NEWS TRIBUNE) The Tigeresses suffered their first losses in their three years of competition during the '76 season. The girls ended the season with a record of eight wins and three losses. This record, added to the previous years' records, gives the Girls' Track Team a fine record of twenty-four wins and three losses. Under the leadership of Coach Karlin Ryan, the team set records in eight events. This year the team saw twenty-one girls receive letters. Next year’s team will have the return of seventeen letter winners. Peggy Ross, Tina Elefterin, and Rene Thatcher, all seniors, set records in the shot, triple jump, and discus, respectively. Another senior, Virginia Sissy” Grant, earned a letter. With a strong nucleus of returning letter winners, next year the Girls’ Track Team will once again have a great season. Peggy Ross gives her all when she throws. She proved her power by once again setting a record. Thus, we would like to express our gratitude to all the people who were involved in making the 1976 TIGER a success. Our sincere thanks and appreciation goes to Miss Geraldine Selby, our yearbook advisor; for without her time, patience, understanding, and hard work, our book would have been a total disaster. To our yearbook staff, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude for all their useful ideas and for a year of fantastic but hard work. We would also like to thank Mr. Donald Hicks, our photography advisor, for his excellent photographic assistance; our professional photographers, Mrs. Pat Gerard of Stanley's Studio and Mr. Sprock of Michael Charles Studio; and of course, our own staff photographers, who did a superb job in taking pictures. Our special thanks goes to Mr. George Stewart and Mr. William Singer, our American Yearbook representatives, for their expert guidance. Mary Ann lerardo Editor Judy Douds Assistant Editor a v .'v.
