Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1974 volume:

2 THE ORANGE AND THE BLACK Although Brighton always favors The Crimson and the Gold And Maroon and Gray are colors That make the Beaver Bold, We will own the lilies slender. Nor honor shall they lack, While the Tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. Through the three long years of high school Midst the scenes we know so well As the mystic charms to knowledge We vainly seek to spell We will win athletic victories On the football field or track. Still we'll work for dear old high school And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o'ertake us. Mingling fast our locks with gray. Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortune fall away. Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our mem'ries back And recall those days of gladness 'Neath the Orange and the Black. 3 1974 is a year to remember for everyone at B.F.H.S. Everyone, from the seniors down to the freshmen, has some special event by which to remember this year. For the Class of '74 it is the last year of high school. We have had three years of classes, parties, and friends to look back on. For us, the prom, commencement, and high school are now only memories. The freshmen have just started their years of high school. They have three more years to look forward to. For them, the prom, high school, commencement, are beautiful dreams. The sophomores and juniors have the memories of the excitement and awe in their first year of high school and the visions of their last. The staff hopes that Tiger '74 will recall happy memories and kindle dreams of tomorrow. F O R E W A R D 5 AND TOMORROW IS ONLY A VISION i! For the giving of their time and themselves, B.F.H.S. thanks them. 20 DR. J. RICHARD FRUTH SUPERINTENDENT Dr. J. It was such a wonderful year and has gone so fast. To be a BFSH Tiger in 1973 74 was an incredible experience for me. Before I came I did not know anything about American schools and I was a little bit afraid of studying in a foreign language with students I did not know. But then I was welcomed so friendly by everybody that I felt at home at once. 1 enjoyed everyday at BFHS and got a lot of new ideas from the Student Council meetings and all the various activities. It was a great pleasure for me to participate in several clubs especially in the Project Club in which 1 had the opportunity to help somebody with my own knowledge. On visitations to other schools in the area I had the chance to see some new and different things and to meet some other students. I enjoyed these visits very much but at the same time I realized that there is no equivalent to BFHS. Each school has its advantages and disadvan- tages but among all if I would have the choice I most certainly would choose BFHS. So, thanks a lot to everybody, to the teachers, our principal, Mr. Pietro, the great 1973 74 Senior class and the rest of the students, to make my year so enjoyable. Thanks a lot to the teachers for their understanding when I missed classes for going on visitations or in order to give speeches. I appreciated it very much that I was given so many opportunities to participate in school life and that everybody was so open-minded and friendly towards me. I think 1 could write a book about my BFHS year, but I hope that this gives you an idea how much I enjoyed and appreciated it. It will always be a wonderful memory for me to think back to 1973 74. I will do everything to come back and see my dear friends again. The band began the hard work of the marching season with band camp daily for two weeks at East Palestine City Park, East Palestine, Ohio. This was where the fundamentals of the football shows, which were performed at half time of each Tiger football game, were laid down. Throughout the half time shows and the numerous parades participated in, many worked hard. Recognition is due to the incalculable work of the Beaver Falls Band Boosters, comprised of band parents, concerned adults, and former and present band members. Miss Denise Sturm served as advisor to the Tigerettes, Majorettes, and Lancers. Gwen Steals served as Tigerette captain, Michelle Oros as head Majorette, and Frank Lonnett as drum captain. The backbone and driving force behind the marching and concert bands was the band director, Mr. Daniel Reuter. A graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University, this year was his first year as band director at BFHS. Special recognition goes to Mr. David Hunter, who is an important factor in all the musical programs in the Big Beaver Falls School system. Concert Season for the Beaver Falls High School Concert Band was highlighted by the two concerts performed by the band. A Winter Concert was presented on February 2. Several excellent selections from My Fair Lady, The American Civil War Fantasy, and Highlights from The Music Man were presented. A nostalgic piece, Tubby 126 BAND The Tuba, was performed featuring Mr. Reuter as soloist, David Hunter as conductor, and Richard Agey as Narrator. The Superintendent's Concert honoring the superintendent of the Beaver Falls Schools, Dr. Richard Fruth, was presented May 3. Some selections from that concert were Selections from West Side Story, Sounds of Sonny and Cher, and Mac-Arthur Park. Principal, Charles Pietro, conducted the Hall of Fame March. Also featured at this concert was a woodwind trio consisting of Donna Allen, Gilbert Coogler, and Joanne Vetter, and playing two selections, Canon, and two movements of Three Observations for Three Woodwinds. The entire concert season was very much a success, and all those involved truly deserve to be commended. The year ended with participation in memorial services at the Beaver County Airport on Memorial Day, May 27, and a trip to Cedar Point Amusement Park, Sandusky, Ohio, on June 1. Band officers for 1973-74 were Sam Minnette, president; Donna Dillan, vice-president; Melanie Casciato, secretary; and Terry Tallman, treasurer. Gilbert Coogler served as Concert Master for the winter and spring concerts. The band put in many long hours to make all their endeavors the great successes they were, and many thanks goes to all those who gave their much appreciated help. Music Drama— 127 First Row: T. After losing three out of their first four games, the Tigers won their last five in a row to finish with a record of 6-3. The Tigers opened the season by losing to a strong Butler, who the Tigers defeated last year, by a score of 34-0. The team then crushed Ell- wood City 43-20 as Kevin Scanlon and Steve Higgins combined on three touchdown passes. The Tigers then traveled to Sharon where they were shut out, 24-0. The Fighting Tigers completed the season with their sixth win, a 34-6 victory over Erie East. The Tigers had a hard climb, but the charges of Coach Bruno showed the traditional fighting Tiger style and came away a winner. Senior three-year letterman, Mike DeChellis, came away with berths on the MAC Coaches first team defense and offense along with senior letterman, Rick Rhodes, and junior, Steve Higgins, on offense only. Next the Fighting Tigers traveled to Blackhawk, where the first game in a long rivalry was played. The Tigers walked away with a big 74-42 victory over Blackhawk. Undefeated Farrell then came to Beaver Falls and handed the Tigers their first league loss, 53-42. The team finished the first half with a loss to Ambridge. Beaver Falls opened the second half with victories over Ellwood City and Butler. Then, in an upset, they were defeated by New Castle. In exhibition season, the Tigers were hampered by numerous rainouts. This caused the team to be late getting ready for the league season. Also, because of the rain, the Tigers were forced to play several exhibition games immediately before the regular season opened. In one stretch, less than a week before the regular season started, the Tigers played five games in three days. As the regular season opened, the Tigers had problems as they dropped two of their first three games. But they came roaring back to capture five of the next six games. After a crucial loss to Beaver, the Tigers won two of their last three, thus finishing in second place behind Beaver in the section. Tiger pitchers hurled two no-hitters this season. Joe Williams threw his no-hitter against Ambridge while Frank Miloszewski's came against Ali-quippa. At the beginning of the season, the team was picked seventh out of eight teams in the section. But with teamwork, hitting, pitching, and fielding, the Tigers surprised many people. With many lettermen coming back next year, the Tigers should be greatly improved next year. The leading hitter this season was Rich Manzetti, and the leading pitcher was Milo. Both are returning lettermen who have a good future. The annual Sportsmanship Award, which is selected by the members of the team, went to Joe Williams. Athletics—14« CROSS COUNTRY First Row: D. Kusnerik, C. Tisdale, B. Rudi, A. Gibson, ). Kolson, E. The Beaver Falls Cross-Country Team ended a poor season without winning a meet but showed excellent signs of things to come. The team was a bit inexperienced as it didn't have one senior. Junior, Effery Tisdale, was named Outstanding Runner, and he shows a lot of promise for his final year at B.F.H.S. The most Promising Runner Award went to John Kolson, a sophomore, who showed excellent form for only his first varsity year. The Tigers were fifth out of eight in the MAC meet and came in last out of twelve teams in the WP1AL Qualifier. The Tigers loosen their muscles in preparation for upcoming meet. Outstanding runner, junior Effery Tisdale, crosses the finish line. 150 GOLF First Row: T. Sheridan, R. Botti, R. Belcyk, R. Reeher. Second Row: R. Welsh, B. DeCaro, R. Marshall, S. Minnitte, Coach Kinkead. Tom Sheridan, one year letterman, blasts out of a sand trap. The Tiger golfers prepare for the day's competition, and Ron Reeher tees off. The Tiger Golf Team suffered through a long, hard season, due mainly to lack of experience. The team had an especially rough time in Section 10 of the WPIAL, which is always one of the toughest sections. The Tigers finished with a 2-6 section record. The Tigers' two victories came over Rochester while their defeats came at the hands of Ellwood City, New Brighton and Riverside, each beating the team twice. Rich Marshall, a senior and a two-year letterman, led Coach Pete Kinkead's charges with an excellent low score of 70 for the season. Rich fired an 88 in the WPIAL Section Qualifier and participated in the MAC Tournament. He shot an 87. A promising freshmen, Tom Sheridan, was second among the Tiger Golfers. Sheridan played well in his first year and showed promises of good things to come. Tom had a fine season low of 78 and a 97 in the Section Qualifier. The third man on the team, Ron Reeher a junior and one-year letterman, also will be returning next year and helping the Tigers. Ron shot an 88 for his low score of the year. He shot a 92 in the MAC tournament, and with another year's experience behind him, Ron should be a fine senior golfer. With the younger golfers gaining valuable experience and with the fine talent returning, the Tiger Golfers of next year will be a team to be reckoned with in the section. Jay Glover set a new pole vault record as he vaulted 11' 6 to break the old record by four inches. Sam Carr set a new school record for the 330 intermediates. Finally, Effery Tisdale finished seventh out of twenty-four runners at the WPIAL finals. The team had many performers who had a hand in the successful season. Tom Wagner was one of the best two-mile runners in the country. In the high, long, and triple jumps, Howie Yellock captured numerous first places. Another big factor in the season was the success of the 880 and mile relay teams. Each team was only defeated once this year. Even though the Thinclads will lose several key seniors. Coach Carbone has several excellent underclassmen returning in hopes of back-to-back winning seasons. Kevin Burton sets to hand the baton to Steve Higgins as the Tiger runners compete in the 880 relay. Effery Tisdale finishes another race in first place. 152 TENNIS First Row: T. Dewhirst, F. Mike Crognale puts extra power on his backhand Dan Casey, a junior, shows a fine forehand, as he hopes for another win. The Tennis Team completed a very successful tennis season as they finished with a league record of 7-3 and an overall record of 11-4. The team finished second in their section behind Beaver. Mike Crognale, a senior, and junior Dan Casey, who is a three year letterman, anchored the tennis team this year as they shared the title of Mr. Reliable. In almost every match, Mike and Dan could be counted on not only to win their singles but also to win their doubles when they combined efforts. Senior, Rick Rhodes; junior, Tim Dewhirst; and sophomore, Tim Woods, also played a big role this year in the success of the team. With several lettermen coming back next season, the team has the potential to be a big winner. Next year's team will be headed by Dan Casey, who Coach Sheffield says will be one of the greatest tennis players to come out of B.F.H.S. The Beaver Falls Girls' volleyball team saw its best season to date during the fall of 1973. With seven girls returning from last year's team, the addition of freshmen, and the leadership of Coach Terry Colatriano, the TENNIS The newly organized girls' tennis team was under the direction of Mr. Sam Sheffield. The team consisted of seven seniors and two juniors. Although lacking experience in competition, the girls displayed fine sportsmanship and enthusiasm. The record for the team was 1 win and 4 losses. The victory was over New Brighton at the outset of the season. Sue Grau, a senior member, has been rated by Coach Sheffield as ''one of the best female players in Western Pennsylvania. team achieved a fine record of 6 wins and only 2 losses in the section. The team barely missed the play-offs this year, coming in second. The highlight of the season for the team was the victory over Beaver, a highly ranked team in the section. The girls' hard work can be seen in the resulting record. The prospects indicate that girls' volleyball could and should become a strong of BFHS. 154 First Row: M. Casciato, K. Gossard, S. Grau, D. The overall record for the team was 4 wins and 9 losses. The victory over Blackhawk, by a score of 47-33, was the team's biggest win. The team was captained by senior guard, Kathy Lee. High scorer for the year was sophomore, Patricia Steals with a 123 points. There is much potential for next year's team, as there are only 3 of the 14 team members graduating. Despite the record of 4 wins and 9 losses, throughout the season the team maintained a high competitive spirit. GYMNASTICS Also making its debut this year was the girls' gymnastics team under the coaching of Mrs. Vicki Kearcher, Mrs. Joyce Webster and Mr. Lynn Hill. Their record of 5 wins and 1 loss indicates that the girls' gymnastics team should become a very strong team at BFHS. Members of the team competed on the uneven parallel bars, on the beam and horse and in floor exercises. Even though the team was young, the girls proved themselves strong competitors. First Row: P. Competing inter-scholastically during its first season, the team exploded on the sports scene. The team ended the season with a perfect 5-0 record. Not only did the girls do well as a team, but also 18 of the 24 members competed at the state qualifying meet. Delores Wallace competed at the state meet. The girls competed in all the track and field events. except the pole vault. This year the team voted Carol Scott as the outstanding girl in the field events and Cindy Ford as the outstanding girl in track e-vents. The coach for the team is Mr. Karlin Ryan.
