The entire student body is grateful for Dr. Fruth's support, strength, and ability. TO THE CLASS OF '73 One of the many measures of genius in the American system of life has been its comprehensive system of free public education. The compulsory part of this educational period can take a young citizen from kindergarten through high school. Many important Americans have felt that this system of public education has been the crowning jewel of American democracy. It is the major ingredient that could and should make democracy work. May the knowledge and self-discipline that a good public education gives, enable you to make your life an intrical part of the fabric that is America. Your support and improvement of our free public education system can guaran- tee the same opportunities to future Americans. Free means free to those who go to school and free of restrain so the people, through their representatives, can manage and control it. May all your days be filled with doing, with excitement, and with accomplishment. -I. Richard Fruth 20 A NHNE SCHOUL BO RD A good school board is vital to any school system. They prepared for a long football season with two strenuous weeks of band camp. As fall pro- gressed, the Tiger Marching Band put forth quite an effort to bring to the football aud- ience pleasing shows. This year such songs as Shaft,,, Get It Onf, and Hawaii Five-Oi' were featured. The band brought the home crowd to its feet after their annual Light Show. In early November the band entertained Cenevians with a half-time show, featuring the Budweiser Songf, To no oneis dismay, the tiring hours of regularly scheduled practices and many extra practices in the roasting sun, freezing cold, and pouring rain came to an end. As band members began to arrange the past-football shows,,, an invitation to march in the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. sparked a new kind of enthusiasm. The fighting Tigers of Beaver Falls finished one of the best cage seasons in the schoolis history with a remarkable 17 wins and only 5 setbacks. Beaver Falls fell short of a section title behind Sharon in the mighty Section III. Sharonis only loss was to Farrell while Beaver Falls finished the league season with eight victories and two losses. The loss of the versa- tile jim Character due to a leg injury in an earlier exhibition game hampered the Tigers, hopes of winning the section title. The mighty Tigers started off the season slowly but soon picked up and finished the exhibition season with a 7-3 record. The high- light of pre-season play was when the Tigers stormed to New Castle to capture the New Castle Tournament. The Tigers opened the season strongly by edging Farrell at home and then beating New Castle and Ellwood City in a rather easy fashion. Following an exhibition win against Beaver, the Tigers were undefeated. Then Sharon came to Beaver Falls and outplayed our flu-ridden Tigers as our offense just couldn't get untracked. Following this defeat, Beaver Falls reeled off five consecutive wins, including a non- league win against West Mifflin North and a victory at Farrell, marking a first in the history of Tiger Basketball. Beaver Falls then traveled to Sharon only to lose 69-40. Beaver Falls finished its season with a victory against Butler, ending what was one of the better seasons, thanks to Coach Chan and Assistant Coach Ciannini. Senior, Don McCann, who finished the season scoring 109 points in the section while gathering many rebounds, earned a spot on the first team for the Section III All-Stars. Senior, Tom Podbielski, and junior standout, Emie Rozier, both gained spots on the second team, while another senior, Desi Wiley, was placed on the list of honorable mention. Managers: L. Mathews, D. Freed, B. Stump, C. Novak, Athletics-65 Senior, Tom Podbielslci, drives around an opponent for two more points. Calvin Brown and Sam Carr sail over the high hurdles. 68 The Beaver Falls Track Team finished their season with a very respectable three wins and four losses in league matches. Under the supervision of Head Coach Albert Carbone, the Tiger Thinclads tied for eighth place in the MAC standings. Four tracksters placed well enough in the VVPIAL qualifiers to advance to the finals held at the Baldwin High School. Effery Tisdale placed fourth at the WPIAL quali- fiers in the 440 yard run. Broderick Hauser placed in the 120 yard high hurdles while Sam Carr placed fourth in the qualifier for the 330 yard intermediate hurdles. In the field, jim Carr also copped fourth place in the long jump. Other lettermen starring in the field were Keith Coosby, Steve Higgins, and Artie DeSisto. With the return of some of these athletes and of the other experienced underclassmen, Beaver Falls should become even tougher contenders in years to come. TIGER ETTER Left to Right First Row: M. Crognale, T. Dewhirst, F. Massa, D. Casey. Second Row: V. Papas, R. Rhodes, M. Caminite, T. Ryder, Coach Sam Sheffield. The Beaver Falls Tiger Tennis Team of 1973 ended an unbelievable season, finishing in second place behind Beaver with a 5-3 record. Their overall record, including the exhibition season, was a remarkable ten wins, four losses, and one tie. Leading the netters to their best mark ever in the history of the school was foreign exchange student, Tony Ryder. His excellent play made Tony one of the best players on the team as well as in the section. He, also, participated in the VVPIAL Qualifier. The number one doubles team was Van Papas and Tony Ryder, both senior lettennen. Under coach Sam Sheffield, the Tigers consistency over the season was amazing. Other underclassmen such as Rick Rhodes and Dan Casey seemed to reveal a bright future for High School Tennis. Thanks to a lot of hard work and experience, our tennis team hopefully will continue their success into the future. Dan Casey, the sophomore sensation, dis- plays his form in an exhibition match. Doyle, Mr. Smartz fcoachl The Beaver Falls Tiger Baseball Team finished an excellent season, capping Section V honors with a mark of nine wins and two losses. Their overall record, including exhibition, was seventeen wins and only four losses. Under head coach, joe Smartz, and his assistant, Rege Frankhouser, the mighty Tigers put together a fine all-around attack against their opposi- tion. Hitters like Greg Troyanowski, who during one stretch had six hits in six time-at-bats, Frank Pisano, Bob McDanelg joe Donnadio, and john Fencil, who displayed his hitting ability against Ellwood when he had three hits, terrified pitchers throughout the season. Balancing the powerful hitting attack were the de- fensive abilities of Denny Kane at shortstop, Mike DeChellis at third base, and Denny Miller, who did the catching for the Tiger Team. They constantly made flawless plays to get our pitchers out of what could have been serious threats. The champs of Section V then entered the WPIAL playoffs. They came from behind to beat Freedom 5-3 in their opening playoff game. Gene Palka was given credit for the victory with Frank Pisano in relief. Beaver Falls then bowed to Peters Township in the WPIAL quarter-final 4-3. The Tigers played a great game, but a few offensive mistakes hurt the team. Frank Pisano hit a two-run homer for the Tigers. 70 Two pitchers, Frank Pisano and Gene Palka, shared the award for the top pitcher of the season with similar records of seven wins and two losses. Joe Donnadio won the batting award with an average of A12. Pete Andino was given the sportsmanship award. CONGRATULATIONS TIGERS FOR A FINE SEASON! G 3 I W wwe' '1j ' yfzff W 24 1- W Q fi MW? In section 12 of the WPIAL, the girls' basketball team fin- ished the season in third place with a record of 7 wins and 5 losses. The section this year included six area teams. A 32-31 victory over New Brigh- ton at the outset of the season was the biggest win for the Tigeresses. This was one of New Brighton's two defeats the entire season. Blackhawk saw the team win by it largest margin, 52-23. Linda Cun- ningham captained the team and was high scorer with a total of 131 points. Until the end of section play, the girls played well and maintained a high com- petitive spirit under the super- vision of Mrs. Vicki Kearcher. GIRLS' BASKETBALL First Row: R. Wachter, P. It is impossible to de- scribe the feeling that I had when I found out that I was coming for certain, and now that I have been here for quite some time I can truthfully say that I was not in any way disappointed. To most New Zealanders my age, the USA is as faraway as the moon, and for me to actually come here as an AF S'er has been both an honour and a privilege I shall treasure throughout my life. The dif- ferent customs and activities that I have experienced while at BFHS have been most of the fun, like the Ushers Formal, pep rallies, football games, and the prom. I shall al- ways remember these. The subjects that I've taken in school have been another source of interest as in the way that they were taught and the class participation that is not so evident in New Zealand. My thanks must go to the teachers for their tolerance and interest in my activities and my special thanks to Mr. Sheffield for his most interesting biology classes and equally helpful tennis lessons. As I visit more and more schools, the one thing that becomes more apparent to me is how lucky I am to be in BFHS in preference to any school I've seen. So once again I would like to say a big thank you to all the students and teachers in BFHS for a truly fantastic year. Thanks for everything, Tony ,qQn 0' my by ' 0 ffl. if W? , Z1 A sr!
