HARRY YOKEL outlet for expression offered through music In such a diversified field as music, students with some sort of musical talent will find an outlet for expression. The Music Department at BFASHS is broken into two main branches—vocal music and instrumental music. Pupils in instrumental music may be members of the high school band, the Bandette, or Tiger Swingsters. All of these share their talents with others by performing within school and for the public at concerts. Vocal music students can participate in Girls’ or Boys’ Chorus, Concert Choir, Chorale, or Madrigal Singers. These groups perform for the school and also for the public at the Vesper Service and choral concert. Theory and music appreciation classes are also offered for students who are interested in the reading of music and its history. JAY MANN languages involved understanding of other cultures ED GIANNINI In earlier years children of foreign born parents were urged to become Americanized”, and abandon their native language. However, today the trend has shifted. It is admirable to be fluent in as many languages as possible. B.F.H.S. is in accordance with such an idea and therefore offers her students courses in the various levels of French, Spanish, and Latin. As branches of the Romance Languages, French and Spanish can be studied for similarities in the many other European tongues. As his grandparents and parents did before him, the language student learns to speak intelligently and precisely. The student must also be quick to grasp the spoken language. He is therefore exposed to various tapes and recordings to sharpen his comprehension. He must be able to read before his teacher as well as speak fluently before others in his class. Also as his ancestors before him, the student of foreign language will translate the works of the great authors and appreciate their universal ideas, applying them to our own culture. WILLIAM D.
