After all, the little u in BiFHuS is really a big U that transforms the Orange and Black from simple shades into a vibrant living Tiger. YOU are in these pages. Maybe YOU will see yourself struggling valiantly through chemistry or metal shop. Or perhaps that's YOU with your mouth wide open singing in the Concert Choir. If not, then surely YOU are somewhere in the vast range of clubs and activities that so many BFASHS Tigers belong to. Then again, YOU may be the real tiger type Tiger and will find yourself in a crushing football touchdown, a cleanly-scored basket, or a smashing homerun. And if YOU are not in the game, YOU certainly are somewhere among the fierce Tigers in the stands. Then there’s the Sophomore Party, the Junior Banquet, the Senior Prom, and the innumerable classmates with whom you associated at those events. We know YOU are there smiling, laughing, grimacing, flirting or swinging. YOU are in these pages somewhere—all 540 days of YOU. I faculty DR. J. RICHARD FRUTH Superintendent Overseeing all of the activities in a school district is not an easy task, but it is evident that Dr. J. Richard Fruth, Superintendent of Schools, has filled his position quite capably. During the years that he has been connected with the Beaver Falls School System, he has always strived to move forward and to improve the standards of the schools. Dr. Fruth is an enthusiastic person and a very co-operative man to work with. Beaver Falls cannot thank him enough for all of the time, effort, and work that he has put forth in order to better BFHS. The Beaver Falls Board of Education is a primary force of influence behind the school program. Although most of its work is accomplished behind the scenes, the members always keep one foot in the present as they discharge their responsibility of directing the school system efficiently and wisely. Throughout the years, they have established many of the ideals of BFAHS and have supplied the students with the necessary equipment for social, as well as intellectual, growth. We wish to express our admiration of the work they have done for us and those who come after us. board of HARRY B. FRY ALBERT S. CARBONE DOM CASEY President Vice-President 20 MR. HARRY D. MILNES Federal Coordinator Mr. Harry Milnes, in his second year as Federal Co-ordinator, has made much progress for the Beaver Falls School System. The Head Start program and the Federal Work program are just two of the projects in which Mr. Milnes has played an important role. The new' printing equipment for the journalism program was also accomplished with the use of federal funds. We appreciate all of the interest that he has taken in us in his roles as a teacher and Federal Co-ordinator. JUNE VOGEL CONNIE DeSANZO education EUGENE DESIMONE CHARLES HIGGINS GLENN L. PEGG GRANT SMITH LEONA CARLISLE Secretary RONALD LENCH Solicitor 21 MR. WILLIAM A. SMITH Principal Any student of Beaver Falls Area Senior High School is familiar with the phrase, My door is always open. 1 he door, of course, is the one leading to the office of Mr. William Smith, BFAS-HS principal. The student who walks through the doorway knows that Mr. Smith will always meet him more than half way concerning any problem. Indeed, Mr. Smith is a fair, cooperative person. Students naturally feel at ease with him because he always talks WITH a student, rather than TO him. The entire BFASHS sincerely thanks him for everything he has done for us. He has always been a great person to work with a fine man to look up to. wilma McCullough PAT ALAKSIN HELEN MIDDLEBROOK 22 MR. EVAN NARDONE MR. ROGER A. ALEXIS Assistant Principal It takes a special kind of person to see a high school student as an individual, rather than just a face among 1600 others. Mr. Evan Nardone is such a person. His position as assistant principal places him in contact with perhaps more BFHS students than does any other school official, yet he treats each student he sees in a special way. Mr. Nardone is very involved with the affairs of the school and is always pushing to improve standards. His decisions are always in the best interest of BFHS, and we appreciate this. Director of Guidance Mr. Roger Alexis, BFASHS Director of Guidance has devoted many years of service to the students of Beaver Falls High School. His duties include the scheduling of tests for all three classes, advising the Senior Class and arranging such programs as College Night, the Ninth Grade Orientation Program, and separate meetings for those students who plan a future other than college. His patience, understanding, reliable judgement, and wide-ranging information will always be appreciated as long as there are BFHS students who seek advice. BABSON 23 PAT SHOAFF CATHY CORBIN PAT BENKO basic english undertook many forms VIRGINIA C. BARBER BETH MUIR Lord Bacon has said, Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.” The English Department at BFASHS offers students reading, conference, and writing in various forms to help them mature into the most complete sort of man possible. The regular English and College Preparatory English classes expose pupils to all three, with experiences in literature, composition, grammar, and group discussions. To gain special instruction in writing, students can take journalism or creative writing courses. These courses afford students an opportunity for help in their strongest area. Pupils with a special interest in reading and speaking may enroll in public speaking and drama classes. Finally, for greater emphasis on discussion, BFHS students are offered an extensive course in great books. With so many outlets for specialized talents, many complete persons should graduate from Beaver Falls High School. WILLIAM D. KNESS Pfctwnl i 24 JANET BERNHARDY THOMAS D. ANDERSON DONNA M. LUTHER HARRY YOKEL outlet for expression offered through music In such a diversified field as music, students with some sort of musical talent will find an outlet for expression. The Music Department at BFASHS is broken into two main branches—vocal music and instrumental music. Pupils in instrumental music may be members of the high school band, the Bandette, or Tiger Swingsters. All of these share their talents with others by performing within school and for the public at concerts. Vocal music students can participate in Girls’ or Boys’ Chorus, Concert Choir, Chorale, or Madrigal Singers. These groups perform for the school and also for the public at the Vesper Service and choral concert. Theory and music appreciation classes are also offered for students who are interested in the reading of music and its history. JAY MANN languages involved understanding of other cultures ED GIANNINI In earlier years children of foreign born parents were urged to become Americanized”, and abandon their native language. However, today the trend has shifted. It is admirable to be fluent in as many languages as possible. B.F.H.S. is in accordance with such an idea and therefore offers her students courses in the various levels of French, Spanish, and Latin. As branches of the Romance Languages, French and Spanish can be studied for similarities in the many other European tongues. As his grandparents and parents did before him, the language student learns to speak intelligently and precisely. The student must also be quick to grasp the spoken language. He is therefore exposed to various tapes and recordings to sharpen his comprehension. He must be able to read before his teacher as well as speak fluently before others in his class. Also as his ancestors before him, the student of foreign language will translate the works of the great authors and appreciate their universal ideas, applying them to our own culture. WILLIAM D. VETICA MARIAN STARR 27 practical experience gained in business courses As the role of business broadens in our society, the need for qualified personnel jumps to new levels. For this reason B.F.H.S. offers many courses to the student who wishes to enter a business career. These students are offered courses with various levels in typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. Business students may also qualify for a course in office practice where they may gain actual experience in typing tests and school publications, working in the various school-wide offices. Pupils who are involved in the academic program may also take courses in typing and possible shorthand for future use in college. Business students at B.F.H.S. are fortunate to be involved in so many pertinent courses with an added opportunity for experience in regular office work. KATHRYN E. McDONALD DONALD J. WHITE 28 LAWRENCE J. MATRAZZO JOSEPH SMARTZ 29 SHIRLEY HEADLAND DOB mathematics paved the way to other sciences One great modern mathematician has said that writing the history of modern science without discussing the importance of mathematical ideas would he a little like producing Hamlet without the heroine, Ophelia. Business mathematics, consisting of problems in profits, wages and interests, is necessary for a study of the social sciences. Mathematics is most important in the study of Chemistry and Physics. Those students who are interested in the advanced sciences must prepare for them through the study of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and additional courses in solid geometry, analytical geometry, or college algebra. In addition to these courses, specially gifted math students at B.F.H.S. may take an intensive course in calculus. In accordance with each department at B.F.H.S., no facet of mathematics has been overlooked. SIDNEY A. KANE 30 ROBERT NEWMAN JONELLE McMILLEN GORDON HARRIER 31 science - explanation ARTHUR E. JERNBERG NICHOLAS W. SKALKO of the functions of life One definition of science is a knowledge of facts and laws arranged in an orderly system, another is knowledge organized and systematized, and still another is systematized knowledge of any one department of mind or matter. Common to all three are the words knowledge and systematized. And so the students at B.F.A.S.H.S. embark upon their tour of knowledge following a very systematized pattern of courses. The beginning science student will first find himself involved in a course of practical science or biology, the study of living things. A first course in biology teaches the pupil to be aware of the things about him and to anticipate those things yet to come. Lab biology provides an opportunity to study plants and animals and to actually see the intricate phenomena of life. Students following a chemistry course attempt to attain the goals of chemistry: to gain knowledge and understanding of matter, its composition, properties, and uses, and to gain knowledge and understanding of the laws and principles of chemistry. In the laboratory the pupils apply a scientific method of thinking, seek for the truth, and express it as they find it. Following chemistry, students may study physics, the science of matter and energy and their regulations. As in chemistry lab, students will also experiment with the basic principles they have learned. As an additional branch in the science field, the study of individual experience provides an occasion for study plus discussion in basic habits of the human race. Through a study of the basic sciences, students will find their own lives organized and systematized. 32 E. HELEN SPONCLER preparations for future occupations through the arts TERENCE KEEGAN Although B.F.H.S. has devoted many teachers and class periods to the instruction of the academic pupil, the student interested in a vocational occupation has not been slighted. Two of the areas for construction and design are the wood and metal shops. Also an important phase of job training is the electrical shop where a student learns the basics of wiring, insulation, and installation of electrical outlets. Art class provides training for students who are interested in art as an occupation. A course in fine arts may follow the study of basic art skills. However, any student may find a course in art an interesting and enjoyable experience. The future homemakers of B.F.A.S.H.S. are likewise provided with a special course all their own. The girls are taught everything from cooking to etiquette in their study of home economics. The future engineers and interior designers of B.F.H.S. are fortunate to have a course in mechanical drawing available to them. S. JANE CRAWFORD 34 JACK ZALUSKI 35 DONALD E. GROVE social studies - foundation for a sound democracy WILLIAM DUNFEE LEE D. HOLT Social Studies forms an important part in the curriculum of a high school because the students actually learn of man’s progress down through the ancient civilizations and his common problems, the institution of governments, the formation of economic systems, and the patterns of each developing country and being. Sophomore and junior students study about our nation, beginning with the early explorers and ending with affairs of the present day. Since this study includes such a broad area, the course is divided into two parts. Sophomore students also study the beginnings of man and his ancient civilizations. Any student may take an elective course in World History where he delves further into the origin of man and his early tribes and governing bodies. In order to graduate, every student in the school must take a course in Problems of Democracy and Economics. Students in the P.D. classes do not only learn of the advantages of a democracy but explore the problems involved in its operation. Vital Issues classes also learn of current problems and their possible solutions. Through a course in Economics, a student more fully understands the workings of our free enterprise system and compares it with the systems of other countries in the world. The students learn about the factors of production, the law of supply and demand, the Federal Reserve System, the stock market, and present economic conditions. As an extra advantage to B.F.H.S. students, a study in advanced Economics and Sociology is provided. Sociology explores basic problems of society including urban development, human relations, and racial and ethnic prejudices. WILLIAM R. BILKEY SHIRLEY RUKAS JAMES BETRES 36 PAUL R. BOOTH ROBERTS SARGENT TAYLOR H. COTTON DAVID L. FLORIE H. RAY SMITH HARRY D. MILNES physical fitness - a way to mental fitness EDWIN CARY With a look at all the other courses offered to the young people at B.F.H.S., it is hard to imagine that enough time could he allotted for a rewarding experience in gymnastics and health. On the contrary, every sophomore and junior student must engage in some form of activity whether it be archery, basketball, softball, or wrestling, for two periods each week. The students may perform the skills they have learned in class for the public at the annual gym exhibition. Also a required part of the school week for each sophomore and junior is an 80-minute study in health. The various topics for discussion in the past have been first aid, hygiene, and anatomy. Right in line with health class comes the opportunity for driver’s education available to each student at B.F.H.S. The participants are taught the basic rules of traffic safety in theory and are later confronted with the actual process of driving with qualified teachers. JOYCE MULLINS JEAN T. WALTON 38 ROBERT HACKER LEWIS M. HEETER LARRY BRUNO 39 DAVID MURRAY encouragement of the future through guidance Our first meeting with the B.F.H.S. guidance counselors possibly takes place in the last days of junior high, when they first speak to us of our future experiences at B.F.H.S. Our close associations with the guidance counselors begin on Orientation Day and last until after graduation. They are the men and women who administer aptitude tests, talk of college, tell us of career opportunities, rank the students, and help in class elections, parties, and the prom. A student can take any of his problems to his counselor and can expect a helpful reply. The counselors at B.F.H.S. probably have more to do with our future careers than any of our other associates. The counselors are aided in their knowledge of the student’s physical health by the periodic physical examinations of the students by the school nurses. LAREE RILEY IDA M. This is certainly true at Beaver Falls Area High School where our band supported the ''Fighting Tigers” at all the away football games. In August, under the direction of Mr. Harry Yokel, preparations for the half-time shows in store for football fans got into full swing. The weekly sessions included instructions in marching fundamentals, and new music for the first shows of the season. There isn’t much glamour in practice sessions; just work. Mr. Yokel divided the band into 4-men squads. Every squad had a set of directions, so everyone did something different at the same time—similar to the glass pieces in a kaleidoscope. Another change in the Tiger band is the addition of a 16-member all-girl precision drill team, planned as a complementary unit to the band, under the direction of Mrs. Marguerite Denison. After the end of the band’s grid season, Sights and Sounds of 67”, the Tiger band was kept extremely active at various parades, basketball games, and pep meetings. The climax of the year for the entire band was the Spring Concert, held the first week in May. The program featured different selections of music preformed by the Tiger Swingsters, and the concert band. The program was also highlighted by various solos and the majorettes. This was the last performance for the Senior band members who will always remember the exciting and fun-filled memories they have had with the Tiger Band. MR. Students from our band have the opportunity to compete for various memberships in the District, Regional and Honors Bands. To be selected for any one of these bands is a great honor. This year six Tiger Band members were selected for the District Band on three points: (1) ability in playing (2) school population (3) need of a particular instrument. After three days of practice, the students performed as a group in a concert at Greenville High School. Another competitive band, the Regional Band, staged its concert in March. Three students were recognized to hold this important position. After three days of practicing, they also performed at Washington High School. Honor’s Band, as its name implies, is a band which selects only the best students from surrounding schools out of five neighboring counties. Besides playing a prepared solo for the panel of judges, each student also had to go through a series of competition, which showed his ability before final selection is made. Three students from the Tiger band passed the necessary requirements to be selected. It is indeed a great honor in which the whole school can be proud. After selections were made, the students worked hard to present their annual concert at Westminister College. CARL HENNING Regional, District, Honors. DAVE BITTNER Regional, District. CECILE ROCHEFORT District JAN SHARRER District 49 LINDA WLOS District RICHARD BOGUSZEWSKI Honors Under the direction of Mr. Jay Mann, each Chorus— Boys’, Girls’, Concert, Chorale, and Madrigal Singers— provides all choral students with numerous opportunities for advancement in the field of vocal music. During the ’67-68 school term at BFAHS, over 190 sophomore, junior, and senior choir members worked many hours to blend their voices in presenting their vocal abilities in both the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The annual Christmas Choral Concert, held December 15, featured each chorus singing several selections ranging from the joy of the birth of Christ to the fun and excitement of The Night Before Christmas.” One of the highlights of the Christmas Concert was the combining of all vocal choirs with the high school brass choir in presenting the familiar carol, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” The music presented in the Spring Concert ranged from standard choral literature of Handel, Mendelssohn, and Brahms to lighter selections from recent films and Broadway musicals. Two added features were the combination of all BFAHS choirs in presenting America the Beautiful” and the presentation of the Symphonic Choir, which is the combination of Concert Choir and the Chorale. The new Symphonic Choir also presented several musical selections at the Address to the Graduating Class. The newly organized Chorale is the most advanced choral course within the curriculum. Besides appearing in all general choral concerts, the Chorale presented an extensive Palm Sunday Vespers. This group entertained for many community organizations and also entered the Carnegie Arts Award Festival in Pittsburgh. The Madrigal Singers, a select group of ten a cappella singers, provided many programs for the high school and community. This year the Madrigals had the honor of being selected to record the two official songs for the Beaver Falls Centennial. Choir activities for the year were under the direction of the BFHS Choir Council. These activities included concerts, student assemblies, sale of Christmas candles, after-concert dances, and the all-choir picnic. 50 concert choir Front Row: D. Searfoss, K. Marsh, B. Garvin, S. Quarterback, Bill Ross was the man with the arm as he completed 63 passes out of 152 for 917 yards and 9 touchdowns. Bob Garvin ’'snatched” the honors as the leading pass receiver catching 18 of Ross’s tosses for 256 yards. On the ground, John Parasida, was the big man rolling up 440 yards, rushing and carrying across 8 touchdowns. Parasida was helped out by Bob Stinson, a sophomore, who picked up 264 yards rushing. Highlights of the season were the 50-13 win over Ain-bridge and the hard fought 27-20 win over Aliquippa. The Tigers proved once again that the Top Cat” in football comes in Orange and Black. Although the Tigers turned in an unimpressive 5-9 record in always tough Section 111, seven of the nine losses were lost within a range of eight points. Among the heartbreakers was the 51-49 loss to Aliquippa, and a 76-73 loss to Sharon. Coach Frank Chan’s boys started the season with a sharp 6-2 record. In exhibition play, they lost a tough one to their rival, New Brighton, 70-69. The high point of Section III play was the thrashing the Tigers gave to Ambridge, last year’s champs, 67-52. The big man on the boards for the Tigers was Darrell Jones with 352 points, followed by Bill Ross who sank 331 points. Rain was the name of the game. Never was a Beaver Falls baseball team any more plagued by the weather than were the boys of Coach Joe Smartz. It seemed the Fallsmen would never get all their games played as they had postponement after postponement. The season did end two games early after it was impossible to catch league leader Hopewell. It is difficult to name outstanding stars in the abbreviated season. The burden of the pitching chores fell on dependable Bob Garvin and Mickey Pelaia. The team’s leading hitters were Merve Belke and Tom Huntington. The Falls Nine ended the league play with 6 wins and 4 losses with an overall record of 10 wins and 6 losses. We try very hard, seemed to be the motto of the Beaver Falls High School Tennis Team. The players always displayed their best efforts, even though they are tagged with the record of ten defeats. Play-off Matches. The Tigers took the Section IX championship for the third straight year with an excellent 15-2 record and they also managed to win the MAC Tournament Championship again this year. Co-Captains Bob Tomich and Mike Meteney were consistent all year with Bob placing 9th in the W.P.I.A.L. Tournament. He also proved to be a tough competitor in the P.I.A.A. State Championship Tournament. Bob Luce set a new school record by scoring 42 2 individual points in team play. Front Row: R. Luce, D. Walcott, D. Surgalski. Second Row: Mr. Kinkead, M. Meteney, K. At the Hopewell District Meet the Tigers finished in 6th place. There were five BFHS members who qualified for the WPIAL finals: Ernie Briancesco, Paul Sargent, Tom Weir, Sam Freshwater, and Brad Yorke. Tom Weir placed 4th in shot put competition, and Sam Freshwater took 6th place in the triple jump at the finals held at Mt. Lebanon. Their record shows 2 wins and 2 losses in dual meets, 3rd place in the Butler Invitational and the MAC, and 2nd in a Tri meet. Two Tigers broke their own previous records and set new ones. Sam Freshwater broke his own 4V 11” school record in the triple jump with a leap of 42’ IOJ2”. Tom Weir broke his 53’ 6 2” shot put with a 54’ 8” toss. The Tigers continued their traditional spirit and drive in one of the school’s most demanding sports. Sam Freshwater breaks record in triple jump. 72 Rich Goosby kicks off to a start in the 100 yard dash. Paul Sargent breaks the tape in the low hurdles. Gene Sargent receives the baton from Bob Bardes. Tom Weir displays winning form in the shot put. It’s up and over for Tom Kairis in the high jump. 73 cross country Profit Row: G. Dawson, G. Beaver Falls High School added still another sport to their athletic roster this year, and proved that the Tigers can adapt and excel in a new field. Coach Frank Chan became head of the first Cross Country Team at BFHS. The Tigers finished their season with a 34-14 slate and some outstanding performances by the Tiger Thinclads. Darrell Jones set a new course record against New Brighton by covering a 2Va mile course in 11:34.5. During the season Darrell lowered many course records. The Tigers turned in their best team effort to nip Nes-hannock by a 27-28 score. In a dual meet there is a total of 55 points for mo teams. Scoring in a cross country meet is based on how the members finish in a race. In a meet, each team runs its five best members against the other team’s five. Teams are scored by the same number of points as the position of the runner as he crosses the finish line. For instance, if a team’s runners place 5th and 7th the number of points is 12. The team with the least points is the winner. Cross Country is a sport which requires stamina, drive, determination, and speed. After such an excellent season the Tiger pacers proved they have all these qualities. I'ronf Row: H. Shleifer, D. Ross, D. Walcott, K. Wagner, K. Stuart, D. Schmidt, R. Dyehouse. Second Row: K. Through the French, Spanish, and Latin Clubs, the students at BFHS, learn more than just another language. They strive to develop and supplement an interest in Roman life and times, and they better acquaint themselves with the present-c ay culture and social values of Spain and France. These clubs are also designed to help develop skills in reading, writing, and speaking these languages. Those students involved in the service clubs, Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, Ushers, Red Cross, Sound Crew, Tiger Corps, Projection, Pep, and Win the Peace, at BFHS are happy when they can be of service to someone. These clubs help the students learn to get along with others and help the students live up to the ideal of a good citizen serving his community for the members are not only called upon to serve the school but the activities of their community. Concerts, plays, and athletic events are not only attended by an enthusiastic audience, but also by members of the Ushers Club, Tiger Corps, Sound Crew, and Pep Club. The Projection Club aids in the showing of films, opening exercises, and evening announcements. The Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, and Red Cross sponsor various service activities such as food and toy drives and other similar projects while Win the Peace serves the community by molding future leaders. When people attend any school function they should appreciate those behind the scenes, workers who keep things going. The highlight of the Tri-Hi-Y social life was the formal co-sponsored with Hi-Y. Students interested in their future careers may join Future Teachers, Future Nurses, Future Homemakers, D.F.C.A. or the Business Club. Through these clubs the students are able to gain some idea of what the various professions are like and develop interests which will benefit them in ful-filling their future goals. Through field trips, projects, and speakers, the members are familiarized with problems, tasks, and opportunities awaiting them in their near future. For BFHS students interested in writing and literature Tiger Roar, Tiger Cub, Quill and Scroll, and the Literature Club may be joined. The motto of Tiger Roar and Tiger Cub might very well be the quote used above. These are not clubs but actually classes where students learn to write both newspaper and magazine articles. The main duties of these classes are to publish the biweekly newspaper, The Tiger Roar and the schcx l magazine, The Tiger Cub. Quill and Scroll is an honorary society for high school journalists who have a high scholastic standing as well as working on one of the school papers. The Literature Club is somewhat associated with those previously mentioned but instead of writing members read and study authors and their novels. Front Row: J. Yanik, M. Timko, M. Moore, M. BFHS students who want to get away from the grind of work for a while may join the hobby and athletic clubs. The purposes of these clubs are to promote understanding, fellowship, and sportsmanship, and to develop social as well as athletic abilities. For girls interested in athletics there is GAA while the boys who have lettered in a sport belong to the Varsity Club. The Sportsman’s Club enables boys to hunt and camp while the Chess and Radio Clubs are hobby clubs which promote a more proficient game of chess and amateur radio as a hobby. National Thespians is for those students interested in acting and dramatics and the Art Club’s aim is to benefit those students who are particularly interested in various phases of art activity. All of these clubs help to round out a student’s academic life. Front Row: J. Wagnor, B. Van Horne, S. Padgett, D. Povenski, M. Majcher, F. Deltino, W. Chapel, A. Hrcnyo, M. Bathgate.
