1967 Beaver Falls Area High School Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania Volume LI The Orange And The Black Although Brighton always favors The Crimson and the Gold And Maroon and Gray are colors That make the Beaver bold, We will own the lilies slender, Nor honor shall they lack, While the Tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. Through the three longs years of high school Midst the scenes we know so well As the mystic charm to knowledge We vainly seek to spell; Or we win athletic victories On the football field or track, Still we’ll work for dear old High School And the Orange and the Black. When the cares of life o’ertake us, Mingling fast our locks with gray. Should our dearest hopes betray us, False fortune fall away, Still we banish care and sadness As we turn our mem’ries back, And recall those days of gladness Neath the Orange and the Black. HP Foreword When a thoughtful TIGER Staff meets an enthusiastic, intense, triumphant, enchanted, and happy student body, the result is the 1967 TIGER, a kaleidoscope of moods. Moods, of course, are emotions; emotions are a vital part of people; and people, after all, is what makes the BFASHS collective TIGER a living thing possessing many moods. If he stretches his muscles, he’s an athletic tiger. When he’s patrolling, he’s a citizen tiger. If you find him quiet and meditative, he’s an academic tiger. What he’s doing determines the tiger’s mood, but so does his age. If he’s a one-year-old cub, new at the BFASHS paths and waterholes, he’s got to be a sophomore. With one-year’s experience at survival, he becomes a junior; and, of course, when he fights his way to three-year-old adulthood, he’s an unbeatable senior. Attempting to divide and classify, however, eventually becomes too complicated. The tiger’s mood, we found, does change both as quickly but as subtly as a kaleidoscope. We can only hope, therefore, that as you turn the pages of the 1967 TIGER you will see and feel what we sensed, the many moods of the BFASHS tiger. 4 Table Of Contents Faculty..................18 Music....................42 Athletic.................38 Seniors..................78 Classes.................130 Activities..............164 6 7 The Tiger is . 8 10 11 The Tiger is 12 13 The Tiger is 0 14 15 The Tiger is 0 16 Happy In Memoriam LEROY ANGLE The untimely passing of Mr. Leroy Angle during this last school year was a sudden and shocking experience to each member of Beaver Falls High School. As he left our midst, he took a portion of BFHS with him. His presence in our school system from the year 1931 until his death added a touch to our school that is hard to describe. Perhaps it was his co-operation and helpfulness that caused the loss that was felt. His departure from our scene can be likened to a machine running without all the oil that is needed. The machine will still run, but the smoothness and efficiency of it is greatly reduced unless all the oil is added. So it was with Mr. Angle and our high school. The school still ran after he left, but not as smoothly as it had while he still taught here. We of the TIGER staff truly desire to express the sorrow that all students and faculty members felt with the passing of Mr. Angle. RUTH MARSH Serving well over 500 students and teachers their lunches each day proved to be a very difficult job, but with the guidance of Mrs. Ruth Marsh, Lunch Room Advisor, the Cafeteria Staff performed their job with efficiency. Thus the passing of Mrs. Marsh during the last school year was quite a blow to this staff, as well as the entire school. The loss of her friendly smile and constant aid was extremely easy to detect. Most of us took her for granted, but with her unexpected death we soon realized that she had done her difficult job with a smoothness no one else could possibly copy. Her passing proved the statement true that you never realize how fortunate you are to have someone or something until after that thing is no longer yours. Mrs. Marsh came to BFHS in 1956, when she accepted the post of Lunch Room Advisor. Prior to this she had taught subjects ranging from science, Latin, and math to her field of home economics in various schools. Mrs. Marsh, although gone from our scene, will always be remembered in the hearts of many BFHS students and teachers. 20 DR. J. RICHARD FRUTH Superintendent In his first year as Superintendent of the Beaver Falls Area School District, Dr. J. Richard Fruth has become a prominent and well-known figure in BFHS. Dr. Fruth is a graduate of Geneva College, Duke University, and the University of Pittsburgh. He was the former Beaver County Assistant Superintendent, a position which he held for five years. New Dr. Fruth is responsible for overseeing all activities which are undertaken in the school district and he can often be seen visiting all schools to make sure things are running smoothly. Yet he still finds time to take an active interest in our own high school’s extracurricular activities, as well as our scholastic achievements. His co-operativeness and capable leadership will long remain in the minds of BFHS students. Secretary 21 CHARLES HIGGINS GLENN L. PEGG GRANT SMITH Board Of Education The Board of Education has the important job of guiding and directing the processes necessary to maintain our schools. These civic-minded men and women supply us with the facilities to augment our intellectual and social growth. They give freely of their time and energy in order to better BFHS, and a special thanks goes out to them for their fine efforts. LEONA CARLISLE RONALD LENCH Secretary Solicitor 22 DR. JAMES A. MOORE Director of Curiculum Dr. James A. Moore, director of curriculum, is a graduate of Beaver Falls Area High School, Geneva College and the University of Pittsburgh. As director of curriculum, he recruits and interviews teacher candidates, supervises the student teaching program, and observes teachers in the classroom. His primary function is to provide the best possible curriculum for the students who attend the Beaver Falls Area Schools. He plans and directs the in-service training program for the teachers, trying again, to provide the best possible program of studies for the students, BEHS is indeed grateful for Dr. Moore’s time, talent, and work. JUNE VOGEL Secretary MR. HARRY D. MILNES Federal Coordinator Mr. Harry D. Milnes fulfills the position of newly elected Federal Coordinator in addition to teaching a psychology class at BFHS. As Federal Coordinator, Mr. Milnes handles all federal funded programs, such as Project Head Start, Manpower Development Training, and the NDEA and ESED Acts. He also makes application for projects, and after the projects are approved, reports periodically on them. We congratulate Mr. Milnes on his new position and the fine work he has done his first year. CONNIE DeSANZO Secretary 23 MR. WILLIAM A. SMITH Principal Serving as principal of any high school is quite an honor, and there is no person more deserving of this honor than Mr. William Smith. As principal of Beaver Falls High School, he is responsible for all the success of academic activities. During his first year as principal he has succeeded in having more student participation in school activities by instituting all-school” pep meetings and assemblies. But most of all, he has made both teacher and student feel more important by the individual attention he has given to all of us. BFHS could not have honored a finer man. BERTHA COX Secretary Wilma McCullough Secretary 24 MR. EVAN NARDONE Assistant Principal During his first year as Assistant Principal of Beaver Falls Area High School, Mr. Evan Nardone has carried a load of responsibility. He had to quickly learn the art of scheduling, counciling, and controlling fifteen hundred new faces. His routine day includes an office filled with troubled students, advice-seeking parents, and constantly ringing telephones. Mr. Nardone’s main duty is to assume the responsibility of the principal in case of his absence, and he fulfilled this duty quite ably during Mr. Smith’s short illness. We all must agree that Mr. Nardone has become a strong link in our administrative chain. MR. ANTHONY META Director of Guidance Mr. Anthony Meta, Director of Guidance, has put eleven years of his time and hard work into the bettering of BFHS. Mr. Meta’s main objective is to work very closely with the Senior class and to help plan all class activities, including the prom, Senior class parties, and the scheduling of tests for college bound seniors. One exceptional program he instituted is the annual meeting at which Admission Directors from several colleges inform students of the standards their specific choice requires for admission. However, those not planning to attend college have an equal opportunity to speak with directors from many of the vocational schools around the area. Without Mr. Meta’s assistance, many BFHS students would not know where to turn after graduation. During these three days all preparations are made for a successful football season. As the bandsmen work on their first half-time show, they practice regular and double time marching, show music, and various formations including straight ranks and files. The new in-coming sophomores are also properly initiated by the old band members. The 105-piece band was able to support the Fighting Tigers by attending every game of the season. All the bandsmen will never forget the Liverpool game when they performed a half-time show in pouring rain. Flag Day, July 4, and Geneva Homecoming parades were some of the other civic obligations in which the band participated during the past year. In February, a selected part of the band presented the annual Bandette Concert free to the public. The purpose of the concert was to entertain the people with pure band music. The band had little time to relax because they had to start preparing for the Spring Concert to be held the first week of May. This was the climax of the year for the entire band. The program featured ensembles, the Tiger Swingsters, majorettes, various solos, and the band as a whole. The Memorial Day Parade marked the final event for the senior members, and the end of another tedious but fun-filled year for the Tiger Band until the beginning of summer, when a new crop of musically inclined students from the various junior high schools arrive. 44 MR. JUDY MOORE District, Regional LINDA YOUNG District, Regional Each year students in the Tiger Band compete for membership in the District Band. Five bandsmen were chosen in the selected group from Beaver Falls High School this past February. The selections were made according to the school’s enrollment and the need for the particular instrument. After three days of practice, the group performed a concert at Knock High School in Saxonburg. In the middle of March, the Regional Band, the last of the competitive bands, held its yearly performance. From the Tiger Band four students were given places in this distinguished musical group. The bandsmen were selected from the top half section of the District Band. The students, who lived with chosen willing people, practiced three days and performed their concert on a Saturday night at Union High School in New Castle. 48 BECKY FREILER Honors, District, Regional Honors Band is another competitive group that takes a bit more effort to be selected. Three Beaver Falls bandsmen were chosen from approximately 250 high school students in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, Clarion, and Mercer Counties. Each contestant auditioned with a prepared solo taken from a list given to them. They were also judged on their sight reading of an unfamiliar piece of music. After acceptance, the bandsmen were tried out for places in the band. The climax for these honored students was the annual concert they presented at Westminster College. All the choruses — concert, chapel, boys, girls, and madrigal — worked many long hours in preparing for their two concerts. The annual Christmas Vespers’ Service was presented on Sunday, December 11. One of the featured selections of this program was Mr. Mann’s own arrangement of the traditional carol, Silent Night in which 200 male and female voices combined to form one huge choir. Selections of many different tastes and moods filled the auditorium on the night of the Spring Concert. Chapel Choir, accompanied by percussion instruments, bass fiddle, and piano presented such selections as The Shadow of Your Smile, Imagination, and Happiness Is. The Broadway musical, Fantastiks highlighted the Concert Choir’s portion of the program. Many choir members were also busy singing for community affairs. President Greg Benedetti is busy giving instructions for a practice air raid drill while the invasion forces consisting of six men land in New York. The six brave soldiers proceed to capture a general who is guarding a secret weapon. 56 Disbelief would best describe the reaction of Queen Patty Verner and her court as Mike tells them that he defeated the United States and captured their new secret weapon. While back at the White House the President is realizing what has happened when Carol Burk, the professor’s housekeeper, tels him of the disappearance of the bomb. The excitement rises as Jim Morak tries to convince Dave Fencil to allow the captured professor to disarm the bomb. The audience will remember this scene. It is when the professor explains the nature of the bomb to the President and his advisor. Although the professor didn’t disarm the bomb. General Glen Iben thinks that he has the upper hand over Mike. At the end of the play, Mike marries Queen Patty and keeps the bomb as a peace weapon. 57 vx The Fighting Tiger Football Team of 1966 concluded a hard-fought season with a record of six victories and four defeats. Beaver Falls placed second in MAC competition. One highlight of the season was the 35-0 victory over Ambridge in the rain at Reeves Field. Another was a 13-6 win over Butler which proved that the Tigers have the ability and drive to beat that tough team on their own ground. With Quarterback Bill Ross making most of the throws, the Orange and Black completed 50 out of 118 passes. Jim Bonanno was the Tigers’ leading pass receiver, snatching 15 of the 24 passes intended for him. Of the 6 Beaver Falls TD passes, Grank Gray caught 3, Gary Crees took 2, and Bonanno got 1. On the ground. Tiger Herb Braxton was one of the leading scorers in the Midwestern Conference. Ken Shumaker made second team, All-State, and all WPIAL class AA”. Coach Florie. Wagoner, Johnson. Standing: Coach Chan, Yonlinski, Garvin, We try harder” might well have been the motto of the 1966-’67 Fighting Tiger Basketball Team. As usual, Section III produced tough varsity competition. An excellent Ambridge team went on from the section to become the state champs. Despite a disappointing 3-11 record in section play, the Tigers tried and tried and then tried harder. Coach Frank Chan’s men racked up a 6-2 record in exhibition play, a record which included first place in the second annual Beaver Falls Education Association Holiday Tournament. The Tigers rolled over Bishop Boyle and Springdale in the Christmas tourney. In spite of their exhibition showing, the Orange and Black lost their first eight games in Section 111 competition. Fighting harder, the Tigers finally broke the ice with a 77-70 victory over Ellwood City in the BF gym. They rounded out their rough Section III season with two more victories — New Castle and Butler. Co-captains Jeff Dewhirst and Bob Wagoner were high scorers. Jeff sank 211 points and Bob made 152. Jeff’s excellent performance on the court earned him a place on the Section III All-Star second team. Also trying harder was Coach Dave Florie’s J. V. squad. The J. V.’s tallied an impressive record of 15 wins and 5 losses. Although their varsity record may not reveal it, the Beaver Falls squad was composed of athletes of the highest caliber. Wherever they went, they were Tigers. Drive and determination led the Tiger Baseball Team to the Section V championship for the fifth year in a row. The fine pitching of Bob Garvin was a key factor in the Tigers’ success. Garvin pitched seven of the eleven BF victories in section play. Mickey Pelaia and Frank Gray also proved themselves on the mound. Garvin and Bob Wagoner were top hitters. Coach Joe Smartz’s men won five of their six exhibition games, losing only to Ellwood City. The Tigers came back to beat Ellwood later with a score of 10-3. The Orange and Black were victorious in eleven of their twelve section games. Beaver was finally able to nose past them with a score of 6-5 in the final section game after a furious Tiger drive to catch them. Inexperience was probably the main reason why the Tiger netters had a rough season. It was the first year for Coach Sam Sheffield and all the members of the squad. The tigers turned in a record of nine defeats. Led by John Parasida, the returning experience next year should give the BF netters a better season. The Orange and Black was beaten by Neshannock at the tough WPIAL playoffs. Led by Mike Meteney, Bob Tomich, Dan Patterson, Don Davison, and Kevin Carugati, the Tigers were a rough combination to beat. Reserves Pete Ferrario, Ray George, and Dick Walcott boosted the team. For the first time in Beaver Falls history, the Tigers took first place at the Butler Invitational and the WPIAL District I Qualifying meet. A fifth place at the Tri-State meet showed that the Tigers were the best in the county. The thinclads were 4-2 in duel meets. New school records marked the ’67 squad. Darrell Jones ran the 880 in 1:57.8. Ernie Briancesco clocked 10:35.1 in the 2 mile endurance test. In the field, Sam Freshwater set a school record with a 41 11” triple jump. Tom Weir, the sensational sophomore, set two school records—he heaved the shot put 53’61 i” and threw the discus 148’-1. Drive and determination marked the BF trackmen. They proved themselves to be fine athletes in one of the most trying sports offered at Beaver Falls High School. Tiger thinclad, Ed Rieser, is off with the gun in the relay. The 1966-67 Chemistry Club invited two speakers to lecture the organization in its effort to advance and supplement knowledge of chemistry outside of classroom work. Mr. Joseph Manfre of St. Joseph Lead Co. lectured the students on metallurgy, and introduced new facts and information on the subject. After he concluded his lecture, he answered questions concerning metallurgy. Mr. William Elliot of the Beaver Falls Paint and Glass Company led a discussion on the chem- istry of paints. He also answered all questions had on the subject after the discussion. The club also viewed two movies on aspects of chemistry. Amino Acids and Acids, Bases, and Salts were the films seen by the organization at the same time the subjects were being studied in class. At the last meeting of the year, the organization reviewed chemistry by playing the Match Game. Teams were made up of members of the club. Front Row: K. Mancing, E. Mancing, J. Infield, K. Young, B. The members of the Physics Club wondered too, and they found out by a movie entitled ‘'The Similarity of Waves” shown at one of the club’s meetings this year. At another of the meetings the members participated in a Microwave demonstration which included using a Microwave transmitter and receiver. Through membership in the club each person’s interest in the field of Physics has been greatly increased. This interest in the club led to the planning of an educational field trip to Shippings port. The club’s enrollment recently has increased to approximately fifty students of BFHS. To gain membership in the Physics Club you must have taken chemistry and be presently taking physics. While discussing mental health, the club invited Dr. David Chadwick to lecture the organization. Mr. Samuel McBride of the Beaver Falls Municipal Authorities aided the students in their study of water pollution and its effects. Since drugs and drug addiction are always interesting topics for discussion, the Lab. Biology Club asked a pharmacist, Mr. Joseph Russo, to speak on the topic. The club also took a field trip to Raccoon Park allowing them to study the further plant life. Front Row: B. Blankenbicker, H. Boguszewski, D. Schwenk, J. Smith, H. Coogler, J. Cline, B. Ricscr, R. Brute.” Sound familiar? If not, it is probably because you didn’t take a year or more of the fascinating, but very complex foreign language known as Latin. The 35 BFHS students belonging to the Latin Club this year found their meetings and field trips to be most enjoyable. Their meetings consisted of a comparison of our present-day elections to those elections held in the days of the Romans, a comedy skit entitled A Roman Newscast,” and a showing of slides of the city of the seven hills,’’ the very beautiful Rome. The club also took a field trip to Buhl Planetarium where they saw the Latin Festival, a movie on Italy, and a sky show. At Christmas time, the club held a clothing drive, a canned-food drive, and a toy drive. The products of the various drives were distributed by the Salvation Army to needy families in the community. Two other Christmas projects included making rag dolls and selling Christmas wrappings. The money made on the wrappings sale was contributed to World Service Projects. In addition, the girls went Christmas caroling at the home of former faculty members and students. February 18 was the date set for the club’s biggest annual social event. The Tri-Hi-Y used the theme Flower Drum Song” for their formal. The cafeteria was decorated as a Japanese wonderland to add to the theme. To end an old year and prepare for a new year, the club held a banquet to induct the officers for the coming year. The Hi-Y is composed of young men interested in servicing their home, school, and community. Aside from contributing a toy to the Student Council Toy Drive at Christmas, the Hi-Y distributed Christmas toys to children of needy families in the community. At the end of the year, the money which was left in the treasury was donated to World Service Projects. The club, together with the Tri-Hi-Y, sponsored a formal using the theme Flower Drum Song.” The formal is the major activity held by the organization. At Christmas the Hi-Y went Christmas caroling. Then the club for you would be the Business Club. The club this year was as busy as the business world itself. The club’s regular meetings for its eighty members included a skit on the do’s and don’ts of business, a movie entitled, Main-street, U.S.A.,” three student speakers from Garfield Business Institute, and tips on good grooming habits for business employees. The club spent a day in Pittsburgh as their field trip for the year. Did you notice a lot of oversized posies standing near the Art Room this year? If so, you weren’t imagining anything. You were seeing the work of not only the entire Art Department, but also many of the Art Club members. This year’s Art Club was an active one to say the least. Their meetings included such things as a film on Leonardo DeVince and another on Michelangelo. They also made frightful Halloween masks for all the children at the Children’s Home in New Brighton, and planned a picnic at Brady’s Run for the club’s membership of approximately 30 students. The Art Club, along with the guidance and aid of the entire Art Department, awarded their annual scholarship again. This financial aid helps some BFHS student further his interest and talent along the lines of art. Art Front Row: D. Wagoner, D. Market, K. Koziol, B. Stacy, B. Callahan, L. Bush, C. Macioce. The Roar is distributed twice weekly and contains current news stories at BFHS. The Journalism 11 class assumes responsibilities for the Tiger Cub. The Cub is BFHS’s monthly magazine. Its purpose is to publish stories of interest to students other than news events. As a result, poll questions, feature stories, and editorials are found in each issue of the Cub. Each member of both classes is given a staff position and must carry out his individual duty in order for everything to run smoothly and to be released on time. Taking over the city is perhaps the most interesting and important activity of the Win the Peace Club. Members of the club are elected to various positions including mayor, tax-collector, the school board, comptroller, and city council. Other positions were appointed. The practice of taking over the city for one day a year began about 25 years ago and has continued ever since. It was introduced by Mr. William Bilkey, a current sponsor. The club’s purpose of studying and discussing local, national, and international problems, and observing local government action is fulfilled not only by taking over the city, but also through club programs. This year, Mr. Chester Roser, Republican candidate for local office, spoke to the club on his reasons for seeking office and his plans for the city’s future if elected. Members were given the opportunity to question Mr. Roser after his speech. Ron Henry, BFHS exchange student to Germany, spoke of his experience while in Germany and also gave a brief history of the country. The last two club meetings consisted of the election of officers and reports given by members who took part in governing the city. Front Rou : Mr. Holt, M. McDonald, P. Bliss, L. Volk, J. December 3 marked the date that transformed the BFHS cafeteria into a medieval castle to correspond with the theme of the annual Ushers Club formal, Camelot.” The cafeteria was decorated with streamers of crepe paper in the royal colors of blue, purple, and gold. The main attraction was a huge gold throne in the center of the room. The formal is the main activity enjoyed by the girls who render their ushering services at all school activities including football games, concerts, and school plays. To entertain and inform the members at meetings, various programs were held. Mrs. Barbara Moretti, cosmotoligist, spoke to the girls on the proper application of make-up while demonstrating on herself and three club members. Ron Henry, BRHS exchange student, spoke and showed slides of his stay in Germany during the summer of 1966. To climax the year, the annual Ushers Club banquet was held at the Willows. To do research, to experiment with extra sensory perception, and to investigate the happenings in ‘'psychic phenomenon” fulfill the purpose of the newly organized Parapsychology Club in BFHS. The club operated on its own for about one year before it became an official school club. Its meetings consisted of discussions concerning strange happenings, and seances were held to contact spirits of the departed. Because it is a newly formed club, the activities have been somewhat limited. However, a barbecue for members and their guests took place last summer. Now that the club has its roots planted, it will soon be engaged in many other projects. Sound Crew One of the most important clubs that contributes to the success of BFHS activities is the Sound Crew. The club provides audio service for any authorized activity, including dances, banquets, and basketball games. The opening exercises held before school each morning and the Tiger news cast at the end of the day are also under the supervision of the Sound Crew. The crew holds two meetings a year. The first is to train new members and the second is for the election of officers. Front Row: S. White, V. Hysell, R. Newhouse, J. Smith, P. Hamilton, S. Davis, K. Coog-ler, L. Covington. The purchase of brightly colored jackets for each member was the highlight of the club’s activities of the year. The main purpose of the Pep Club is to promote general school spirit for all sports and interscholarstic activities. If you notice more enthusiasm and overall added school spirit at BFHS this year, you realize the influence of our newly organized Pep Club. Last school year the organization began by drawing up a constitution, but it was not recognized as a full-fledged club at BFHS until this year. Membership in the club is determined strictly on a voluntary basis, with two people representing each of the school’s homerooms. Front Row: G. Krawchick, J. Wood, J. Ricci, J. Fyke, D. Thompson, W. Some students, the 28 members of the Projection Club to be specific, gave up these precious study periods so that the other students of BFHS could enjoy the advantages of many films seen in all their classes. During this past year nearly 1,000 films were shown by the members of this busy club. Approximately 400 hours worth of films were viewed by many students of BFHS. These figures do not even include all the assemblies and plays where various films were shown. This was all done with solely one training night for the boys. 190 Were you aware that 50 of the most rough and tough guys of our school get together several times throughout the school year and collectively plan their strategy? Yes, it’s true. The name of this fearful group is the Varsity Club. Their strategy for this year included going to New Brighton to play the Brighton Varsity Basketball team, planning a hayride, a dance, and a dinner with dates for the members of the club. Their most important plan of the year was choosing one of their members to receive a $100 scholarship. The deserving student had to be not only a fine athlete, but a C” or better student. The club’s main purpose is to promote sj orts at BFHS. Varsity Front Row: H. Nelson, K. Shumaker, L. Croston, R. Caputo. B. Wagoner, J. Dewhirst, D. Davis, T. Kaminski, J. Smilek. Second Row: M. If you boys of the underclasses like activity in the clubs you join, you should carefully consider tse Sportsmen Club. It was more than active this year. The club organized a small rifle team and sponsored some of its members in the Safe Hunter’s Course. They also planned two field trips which included stocking trout at the Little Beaver River and taking an educational trip to Pymatuming Fish Hatchery and Bird Conserva- Sportsman tory. Throughout the year members saw films on hunting and fishing. The main purpose of the club is to support and enlarge the enthusiasm of its members in the field of sportsmanship. The Sportsmen Club teaches its members to be careful, conservative hunters and not haphazard, dangerous men. Front Row: B. Tkacik, R. Eberhart, M. Hudak, M. Osman, B. Gahles, K. Shumaker, C.
