Doug Roedl sweeps around end as a Columbus tackler makes an attempt to stop him During the hot days of late August the call went out for football candidates The outlook was bright but a championship team was hardly given a thought The first days were rough as the team began to get in shape Calisthemcs wind Sprints and passing drills got the boys in form Rigid training rules were set down The practice sessions were long early morning until late in the afternoon with a break for lunch. Day after day went by with the team showing great improvement. This was the same team that last year was short on experience but had high spirits. This year they looked like they had both but had yet to prove themselves under pressure. The first game with Watertown would prove a lot. Tension mounted as the game came closer. Everyone was hopeful that this WAS THE YEAR, It was as the game with Watertown and seven other oppo- nents showed. Beaver Dam became co-champions of the Little Ten and won recognition as the top defensive team in the state. 21

Dan Doherty Orthwin Gallitz John Kester School spirit rocketed to new heights with the beginning of the 1954 football season. The Beaver's first game was a victorious one, as they downed the Watertown Goslings 6-0. Next week, the team returned to Beaver Dam to meet the I-Ioricon Marshmen, and to give the home- town folks a good look at the team by trouncing Horicon 40-0. Following the Horicon game, the Beavers traveled to Oconomowoc and turned back a highly rated eleven. Cooney was the only team to score against the Beavers, but a second-half rally brought the Beavers out ahead by a score of 20-18. On the following Friday, the Beavers came home to smash the Columbus Cardinals by a score of 26-0. On the trip to Mayville, the Beavers managed to score in the last 25 seconds and spoil Mayville's homecoming 7-0. Next, they took on Ripon, and downed the Tigers 26-0, as they stormed on toward the title. Dad's night saw the Beavers eke out a 7-0 victory over the Waupun Warriors. This was a great climax to a very successful football season for Coach Henry Derleth, who enjoyed his first unbeaten and untied season in his coaching career. Richard Kester Richard Linde Seaufcvw
