reoh men Qequired. . With four of his five subjects. . . English gram- mar and literature, civics, mathematics, and health and physical education. . .required , and with one elective, the Freshman lays the foundation on which all future choices and plans rest.

O Qlectwe. . . The Freshman enters Beaver Creek in the fall with his course of study already chosen through the administra- tive plan for Spring Registration. Through Spring Registration the rising Freshmen from Elkland, Fleetwood, and West Jefferson Elementary Schools meet and discuss with Mr. Bingham and members of the registration committee the opportunities awaiting them at B. C. The most important phase of the Freshman year is, perhaps, his orientation to the new school with its unfamil- iar routines, teachers, and procedures. At this time the Green -almfl. White, student handbook, is the guide and is more avidly studied than is any textbook. A more rigid system of grading confronts the Freshman, for , here grades must be earned, and honor points are essential for graduation. Six letters. . .A,B,C, D,E, and F. . .are used in grading to determine the degree of scholastic achievement. An A is earned by a student whose mastery of far more than the minimum essentials is evident and whose work has extended far enough afield to exhaust the subject on a high school level . A denotes excellent work and superior accomplishment and carries with it 4 honor points. B means that the student has mastered more than the minimum essentials and indicates that his work is above average. A B is valued at 3 honor points. C indicates a type of work which, to a slight degree, surpasses the minimum essentials. This is symbolical of average work and is worth 2 honor points. D indicates that the student is barely learning the minimum essentials of what is required in the course. One honor point accompanies this grade. E shows that the student is barely passing the course and is being given credit toward a certificate. The student receiving an E is, inthe opinion of the instructor, one whose capacity and ability is limited, whose efforts have been exhausted, and whose repetition of the course would be valueless. An E carries no honor points. F means that the pupil is not making use of the instruments of learning. This may be caused by a variety of reasons, but he is -rg attempting to learn. With an F one honor point is deducted. Living and working with others in a healthy mental environment and assuming the responsibilities and privi leges of school citizenship is essential to becoming responsible, respected members of the community.
