Students graduating under the commercial curriculum receives thorough and intensive training before going to work with local businessmen for three months of on-the-iob- training. getter citizen Physical fitness, loyalty, cooperation, and mental alert- ness are products of the athletic program. The prerequi- site of a Beaver Creek athlete, says Coach Allen, is to possess the characteristics of a Christian gentleman. Continual planning with the faculty and students, Mr. Bingham feels, is essential to successful attainment of educational obiectives ,,7 ,,,7,,7,,, W through varied activitieo Working together for the school and for each other, the Beta Club mem- bers unselfishly give their free time to serve in the school store. lndividaul abilities and apti- tucles are discovered and uti- lized through participation in the school band. BEAVER CREEK HIGH SCHOOL ..... a symbol of potential opportunities for each student. l.4 oreworal This edition of THE BRIDGE is an attempt to portray a cross-section of the activities, curricular and co-curricular, for which Beaver Creek High School is known and respected. Realizing that the purpose of education is to provide an environment conducive to the physical, mental, moral, social, and emotional devel- opment of each student in and for a democratic society, the administra- tion continues to broaden the curriculum and to increase the number of meaningful activities in order to meet the'individual needs of the student. Fundamentally, the philosophy of education at Beaver Creek High School is that the students receive training which will make possible intelligent participation in the democratic society of which the school, the community, the state, and the nation are integral parts. Successful fulfillmentofsuchaphilosophy demands the loyal cooper- ation of everyone even remotely connected with the school. The degree of success now being attained through this program is made evident throughout this edition by portraying many of the activities involved in the training ofcitizens to think and fudge independently and to function effectively as individuals and as a group. THE STAFF geclication To one who has taught us truth and goodness, love and appre- ciation, work and recreation, affection and friendship, beauty and aspiration, To one whohas shared with us our comradeship and adventure, our seeking and finding, serving and sharing, loving and being loved, To one who has become a part of us and we of her, To one who has been our teacher, but more. . .our friend, To you Miss Ruby Trivette, we the annual staff of THE BRIDGE of 1957, dedicate, This, Gur Annual. THE STAFF 1 5 A great amount of routine work by each teacher is necessary to help achieve the educational obiectives. An accurate and comprehensive knowledge of the students comes through a thorough understanding of the Teachers' Bulletin, the Students' Handbook, daily attendance records, and information compiled in the High School Register. Only through the utilization of such knowledge can the faculty attempt to meet the physical, vocational, ethical, and emotional needs of the student. ccculty The most revealing and the most vital of all records kept by the teacher is the Cumulative Re- cord, which goes with a student wherever he may attend school and which remains as a permanent record of the school from which he graduates. .or leaves. Not only a record of scholastic achieve- ment through the years but also an indication of the total development of the student, this Record is always the basis for future guidance andcoun- seling. w. Each student at Beaver Creek is required to register for five subiects each year, so the Sophomore may select three elective courses from a varied list. His individual ability, interests, and preferences become his guide for this choice. By the second year of high school the student is encouraged to carefully consider various vocations. A wise choice and an evaluation of his vocational plans give the student opportunity to exercise his own judgment and to assume responsibility for his own actions. Sophomore or C-Dequirecl. . . Pursuing the required subiects, the Sophomore takes biology and begins his second year of study- ing English grammar. The Freshman enters Beaver Creek in the fall with his course of study already chosen through the administra- tive plan for Spring Registration. Through Spring Registration the rising Freshmen from Elkland, Fleetwood, and West Jefferson Elementary Schools meet and discuss with Mr. Bingham and members of the registration committee the opportunities awaiting them at B. C. The most important phase of the Freshman year is, perhaps, his orientation to the new school with its unfamil- iar routines, teachers, and procedures. At this time the Green -almfl. White, student handbook, is the guide and is more avidly studied than is any textbook. A more rigid system of grading confronts the Freshman, for , here grades must be earned, and honor points are essential for graduation. Six letters. . .A,B,C, D,E, and F. . .are used in grading to determine the degree of scholastic achievement. An A is earned by a student whose mastery of far more than the minimum essentials is evident and whose work has extended far enough afield to exhaust the subject on a high school level . A denotes excellent work and superior accomplishment and carries with it 4 honor points. B means that the student has mastered more than the minimum essentials and indicates that his work is above average. A B is valued at 3 honor points. C indicates a type of work which, to a slight degree, surpasses the minimum essentials. This is symbolical of average work and is worth 2 honor points. D indicates that the student is barely learning the minimum essentials of what is required in the course. One honor point accompanies this grade. E shows that the student is barely passing the course and is being given credit toward a certificate. The student receiving an E is, inthe opinion of the instructor, one whose capacity and ability is limited, whose efforts have been exhausted, and whose repetition of the course would be valueless. An E carries no honor points. F means that the pupil is not making use of the instruments of learning. This may be caused by a variety of reasons, but he is -rg attempting to learn. With an F one honor point is deducted. Living and working with others in a healthy mental environment and assuming the responsibilities and privi leges of school citizenship is essential to becoming responsible, respected members of the community. reoh men Qequired. . English gram- mar and literature, civics, mathematics, and health and physical education. . .required , and with one elective, the Freshman lays the foundation on which all future choices and plans rest. Students who participate in the athletic program at Beaver Creek may choose one or several activities if they can meet the academic, physical, and ethical re- quirements. One year of health and physical education is required of all students, and many participate in the regular physical education program. Participants in the interscholastic program undergo a thorough physical examina- tion by a local physician. Girls participate in basketball, softball, rhythm classes, and calisthenics. Bas- ketball and softball are interscholastic sports, but by far the most important is basket- ball. Football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, and tumbling are offered for boys. Working and playing together as individuals and as teams, students develop a sense of cooperation and loyalty, fair play and good sportsmanship, and wholesome competition. Athletics fx: .5 -fe. Elective offices include President of Student Body, President of Student Council, all class officials, the outstanding boy and girl of the year, as well as many other superlatives. Student elections are conducted as are our political elections. To be eli- gible to vote in an election, a student must owe no fees, have no unexcused absences or tardies, and must be a school citizen in good standing. . We realize that the greatest of all lessons to be learned in life-is to get along well with others. ln our daily living we are in contact with other people, and our modern civilization intensifies our interdependence. Recognition of the social and economic aspects of mutual dependance becomes a symbol of maturity. Good public relations with the industrial firms and businessmen with whom we deal make possible the publication of our annual. ln turn, the patronage of the students and their families and friends makes possible the financial suc- cess of the commercial interests. . .one facet of interdependence.
