This Is Our Be Where Oil Flows 'AA GEYSER OF OIL,', the headline on the front page of the Beaumont Enter- prise of January 10, 1901, said. At ten o'clock that morning on a rise known as Spindletop just south of Beau- mont, Captain Anthony F. Lucas brought in the nationls first oil gusher. With it the modern oil industry came into existence and soon after the gas industry. Oil companies were organized rapidly. Official records show that nearly 600 were formed in those early days. Some sold out. others failed and some were frauds. but from among the companies formed came the Texas Company. Gulf Oil Corporation and Magnolia Petroleum Company. ln a few short years the boom was here to stay. For the first time in history a great source of fuel was available. lt was close to ocean transportation. This com- bination made a new industrial revolution possible. There is little wonder why Beau- mont calls itself the city 'fWhere Oil Be- Oil Wells Blending with Beaumont's downtown skyline where the Neches River curves lazily toward the Gulf of Mexico some 42 miles distant is Bethle- hemls bustling shipyard pictured at right where some 2,000 people from the city and surrounding area earn a living. This is where off-shore drilling for oil was pioneered and where strange-looking craft still rise to towering heights along the building ways before the tremendous resources of oil in the Gulf can be tapped. Bethlehemls Beaumont shipyard is more than just a shipyard. lt is a steel fabrication plant where steel beams and trusses for highway bridges and buildings are put togetherg where huge refinery pressure vessels and towers are built: where weary ships of the nation's maritime fleet come in for remodeling and repairsg where new technical advances are made every day in what is still a comparatively new industry-off-shore drill- 1ng. came an lndustryfl
