We have chosen this for our theme because We, too, are Forty-Niners, and we are progressing every day just as our an- cestors did. One hundred years have passed since those hardy pioneers of 1849 set out for California in search of gold. They succeeded in reach- ing their destination because they Were persistent in the face of defeat. Though we in this day have no such frontier in the realm of exploration, frontiers are opened each hour in the hearts of men. Each supreme pur- pose in life demands a strong will and undaunted determination-parallel to that of the frontiersmen of previous time. We have only to determine our goals and go onward toward new horizons. While the aim of Forty- Ninersv of a century ago was the discovery of gold, ours is the attain- ment of success and contentment as We go through life. --Contributed by Marjorie McMahon and Jo Evelyn Culpepper. Dr. Joe Stoeltje ,12- Superintendent 4, 4-,sw i WESTWARD HO! appears to be most appropriate to t e very ime y dred Forty-Nine Yearbook. It is, furthermore, highly symbolic of the development of Amer- ican Life based on the concepts of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness which have so well served as the bases upon which the influence and power of American Government have h t' 1 theme of this, your Nineteen Hun- been built. This meaning of WESTWARD HO! might accordingly well be applied to each child born into American Life with assurance of the opportunities of developing personality, ability, and attitude in accordance with the Great Creators desire. Such has been characteristic of the Great American Nation, stimulated by the ideal hearing the phrase, Go West, Young Man and thus developing a World-status unknown in the History of Man. Sincerely, R. L. WILLIAMS. -15- Assistant Superintendent It seems there is a general feeling that the frontier days are passed. Men in all walks of life are saying, Give us people who can live and work with their fellowmen without strife. Perhaps, todays frontier is in the realm of human relations. Let all of us determine that as far as it is humanly possible we will live without strife with our fellowman as a neighbor and worker. In our atomic age it is essential that nations, people, and individuals live peacefully together, or civilization could destroy itself. Life without strife is our frontier. Sincerely, FRED W. HUNTER. 114- Principal The forty-niners is a very appropriate theme for the year book of the graduating class of 1949. Congratulations to the sponsor, the staff, and the graduating class. During your years in Beaumont High School you have had many enjoyable times, a few hardships, and a few set-backs. Now you have reached a period in your life, graduation, that you should never forget. May this Pine Burr help you to remember the friends, tradi- tions, high ideals, and the true purple spirit which have made this school an enviable institution. Sincerely yours, D. E. BAILEY. -15- Assistant Principal To the Class of 1949 I extended greetings and sincere good wishes. You have climbed one more rung in your educational ladder. Whether you go to college or out into the world, may you have fondest memories of the labors, joys, and accomplishments that have been yours in Beaumont High School. I trust that the lessons you have learned will serve you well in Life's School. May each of you prove worthy in every experience and opportunity that comes to you. Cordially, A. P. GRIFFIN. -16- Registrar Congratulations Seniors of 1949. As the spirit of adventure and courage to conquer manifested itself in the pioneers of 1849, may the same spirit endow you with the desire and ability to pioneer in your chosed field of endeavor. As the spirit of true Democracy was carried westward in 1849, may you carry the spirit of Democracy with you into your field of operation that this Nation may remember you as a true and courageous pioneer in the great field of human relationships. With an air of professional theatre predominating the actors and a setting of luxury in drapes, lighting and red plastic furniture the curtains opened for two nights, April 6-7, on the Senior Class Production Stray Cats. Success highlighted both of the evenings in full force. With a plot as legendary as time itself and with a cast, dialogue and setting as modern as 1949 the show un- raveled the story of a will, providing a legacy of four million dollars to one of the three Skinner nephews- Tom 1Everett Brunsonl, Dick, the leading man, Qsmoothly executed by Jack Wilderl or Harry fEarl Sullivanl-who is married by a certain date. The will is not found until- the mornin-g of that date, and when the proviso of the will is not found until the morning of that dateg and when the proviso of the will is made known to the nephews, all are still single and have but fourteen hours in which to secure a wife. Tom and Harry, both from the country, lose no time in getting to Dick's photographic studio in the City. All three pretend they are not even interested in trying to ful- fill the requirement of the will and win the money, then each, secretly, works in frenzied haste to secure a wife and claim the legacy. The bell boy Cjack Yianitsasl took a small role and developed it into the leading male comedy star part and played his audience into hilarious laughter on every en- trance and exit. Playing along with him as leading femi- nine comedian was Gladys Halbouty as Mrs. Jennie Long, the rich, matronly widow that longed for four million dollars and a yearning to be young again! The other two cats who fought so viciously and cleverly to marry Dick for his inheritance were Leona Brooks 1Patsy Bennettj and Wanda Taylor CKathleen Wilsonl. Kitty Baker, the leading lady fcarried by Joye Cobb? Dick's stenographer, and a very clever girl, is very much in love with Dick and feels it keenly that Dick has over- looked her entirely in his frantic search for a wife, pro- posing frantically to the three catsg jenny, Leona and Wanda. She plans to get the three women together in the same room and it is but a short time before the matter of the secret proposals is the main topic of conversation. Each is indignant and agrees to decline the matrimonial offers and leave Dick in the lurchg but this was just a ruse to throw the others off their guardg for that same evening, at the time set to give their answers, each woman accepts Dick's proposal and Dick finds himself confronted with the startling fact that he is engaged to all three of the women he has proposed to. And now, he has suddenly become aware of the fact that he doesn't want any one of them, but is really in love with Kitty. just how Dick released himself from his obligations to the other three women, hofw he got the deserving girl and also the four million dollars was a delightful and complete surprise to capacity crowds at both perform- ances with a minister Uohn Tullisj tying the knot. The bell boy Uack Yianitsasj took a small role and developed it into the leading male comedy star part and played his audience into hilarious laughter on every en- trance and exit. Playing along with him as leading femi- nine comedian was Gladys Halbouty as Mrs. Jennie Long, the rich, matronly widow that longed for four million dollars and a yearning to be young again! The other two cats who fought so viciously and cleverly to marry Dick for his inheritance were Leona Brooks CPatsy Bennettl and Wanda Taylor lKathleen Wilsonl. Kitty Baker, the leading lady icarried by Joye Cobbb Dick's stenographer, and a very clever girl, is very much in love with Dick and feels it keenly that Dick has over- looked her entirely in his frantic search for a wife, pro- posing frantically to the three catsg Jenny, Leona and Wanda. She plans to get the three women together in the same room and it is but a short time before the matter of the secret proposals is the main topic of conversation. Each is indignant and agrees to decline the matrimonial offers and leave Dick in the lurchg but this was just a ruse to throw the others off their guard, for that same evening, at the time set to give their answers, each woman accepts Dick's proposal and Dick finds himself confronted with the startling fact that he is engaged to all three of the women he has proposed to. And now, he has suddenly become aware of the fact that he doesn't want any one of them, but is really in love with Kitty. Just how Dick released himself from his obligations to the other three women, how he got the deserving girl and also the four million dollars was a delightful and complete surprise to capacity crowds at both perform- ances with a minister fjohn Tullisj tying the knot. -138- UNIOR PLAY With the curtains opening on a scene of antiquated beauty that caused breath-taking ahs to How through an appreciative audience for two nights, Song of My Hagan, spelled tremendous success for the junior Class of 19 9. Linda Edmunson, so proficiently carrying the starring role of Sylvia Moyne, lead us back to a southern Virginian plantation of 1874 through the reading of a diary dis- :overed by she and a college roommate, Laurel, cleverly protrayed by Marie Truett. Adding to the colorful scenes of the present and past came the true to story book style Michael Willoughby, convincingly played by Bobby Car- raway. Perhaps highlighting the entire play were the aeautifully paced love scenes and jealousy conflicts of Sylvia and Michael. With this drawing room setting, the plot will be re- membered as having been the story of a modern day Sylvia reading an old diary of her grandmother's, as the lights dimmed down, and then up, on the year of 1874 with another Sylvia betrothed to marry Harley Foreman. lNoel Edgarl, whom she did not love, but had vowed to marry at a time when she felt that her sweetheart, Michael Willoughby, had disproved his love. Not knowing that he was shielding her brother, Stephen Moyne, fArthur Nallj, she accuses him of being attracted to Desiree Loring, tFran- :es Ragsdalel, and fighting a duel in her behalf. Agitating this situation were the two attractive little cats Faith, tCarter Arthurj, and Shirley, tlda McFaddinJ, and a sweet, loving mother, fMary Morganh, who was interested in a practical son-in-law, instead of one so handsome and dash- ing! The result of the past romance found Sylvia of 1874 marrying the l:oy she did not love because of vows and pledges made before she found that Michael's love was true and that he was protecting her family name by Shielding her brother in his duel escapade. Through this discovery we come back to the modern day with a Sylvia, who decided to break her engagement to a boy that she is about to marry because he is steady and practical, and gives her love to the modern Michael, with his handsome face and dashing style. Never let it be forgotten that the comedy scenes of this production came in just where they were needed, after so many intensely dramatic scenes with all the vitality and professional capability an audience could desire. Could you ever forget Mandy, 1Ann jonesl, and Poley, tRoss Wilderb, the two typical southern plantation servants with their own little private love affair? The parts that get the least attention and are so vital, are stage technicians. Efficiently working backstage, to make onstage, so successful were Marjorie Rowland and Bill Mason.
