The Administration has taken this as a motto and has faith- fully and excellently done its part in preparing us, the students of Beaumont High, for the job ahead ---the Winning and retaining of peace on earth and good will to- ward men. In. L. Cariker, Assistant Principalg Newman Smith, Principalg C. E. Ferguson, Registar. HUHHH ll lHHHHlIHN Sincerely endeavoring wisely to administer the school, this body of eight civic-minded citi- zens has led us through :mother year of war. Their part in preparing us, the future citizens of America, was ably done. It is a hard job to please a school full of peo- pleg the Board of liducation did not let this hinder them in carrying out their excellent program. We of not so acute judgment realize now that what they did was best, and will con- tinue to be so. Letting wisdom and foresight be their guide, they have chosen the curriculum, teachers, and textbooks for our fair school. Their repeated efforts at improving the school institutes con- fidence in us. Their superb ability at their task has been shown by the quality of this year's graduating class. They owe their fine pre- paredness to meet the problems of living to these fine people. The war has presented apparently insur-- mountable obstacles. Courageously they stuck to the job until it was done. This was their cog in the machine of education. We cannot be too high in our praise of the task they have done so well. The Class got under way when they chose for their spon- ser Mr. Smiley Davis. When talk of having a large bond rally was heard about B. H. S. --this turned out to be a reality-- the Junior Class got busy and elected Libby Abbott to represent their class, Who had stiff competition, for the representative for the Sophomore Class was Ann Williford, and the Seniors chose Elizabeth Tyrrell. The Juniors wound up the Bond Rally by selling 330,000 in War Bonds, and accordingly, Libby Abbott was crowned Duchess of the Bond Rally. The Juniors' good luck, or we could credit it to skill, con- tinued when we presented Days Without Daddy as their annual play. Parker surely proved his worth when he pull- ed out his Bull Durham, and began to puff away. Evi- dently Joe Mouton was practicing up, for he was the minis- ter that married Lynn Walker and Wilma Eddins. Every person present seemed to enjoy Days, Without Daddy . As a reward, the junior Class cleared a cool 35140.00 off the production. As the year rolled on, they presented Rings in the Saw- dust as their stunt. In this musical hit, many hidden talents were uncovered, for Arthur Inky Snow Smith did all the good by uaccentuatin' the positive and eliminatin' the nega- tibev. Carl Rankin made all the girls swoon to the tune of Don't Fence Me In . Dare Keelan showed his age as the son of Widder jaybird, and Flora Dean Ford demonstrated her encentric manner on Mamma's Little Angel . The class showed their appreciation to Mrs. Howell for her superb direction by presenting her with a vanity, back- stage. The entire class looked forward to the Junior-Senior Prom, and although it had to be postponed several times be- cause of conflicting dates, everyone felt that it was worth waiting for. Mr. Guither's Purple Swingstersn furnished the music in the gayly decorated gym that the artistic David Cargill provided for. You guessed it, the feller in charge of entertainment was Meatless Meatballs Smith. The bad news came out in May, with the Juniors looking forward to being high and mighty Seniors in three months. -H 55 H- SHPHHMUHES VICE-PRESIDENT, GEORGE MCDANIEI. They won 20 out of 23 games, the City Cham- pionship, and the North Zone of District 14AA. They were undefeated in City and North Zone play. In the City Park Department Tournament, the Royal Purples cleaned up, going through the Tournament undefeated. In the other tournament, in which they were entered, the Purples went to the semifinals, and were defeated by Cushing 30-24. Goose Creek defeated them in District playoffs, 51-32, and 46-31. With only one letterman to build on, Coach Hutchison produced -a smooth-working hotshot team. Their passing and shooting ability was praised many times by opposing coaches and men. Lamar Bubba Hart, returning letterman and guard of extraordinary ability, and Don Mace, smooth ball handler and hotshot, were the two stalwarts on defense and the lead- ers in the Purple offensive. Edgar Snow Arthur and Ray Don Carter, fast breaking forwards, kept the meshes warm with their repeated counters. Joe Mouton, center, kept the offensive moving by ringing up two points every few minutes for our side. These five were ably aided by Ted Jackson, Ed Hilder, and john Gambrell. All these were lettermen. The job of the second string was to keep the first string in tiptop condition, and they did just that. The second- stringers were Don VVillis, Richard Davis, Earnest Crone, and Carl Branson. Their rewards were reserve letters and silver basketballs. We cannot underestimate the ability and teamwork of the 45 Royal Purules. They've made a name for Beaumont High. Opponent Opponent Beaumont E R ENCH 2 4 -,-,YYY, YYVV- ,,g-YYYYY Y 2 6 ST. As the Pine Burr goes to press, it is impossible to foretell the outcome of the 1945 track season in terms of events won or lost. judging by the initial performance of the Purple tracksters in the Port Arthur meet, there are in the pictures on this page a number of outstanding performers in track and field events. Coach Davis, who has worked hard to arouse interest in track among the boys of Beaumont High, should be congratulated for his fine work with these boys. Richard really brought down the house with his neat interpretation of the difficult character. All the six feet and two inches of Reed Quilliam's bulk were thrown into his portrayal of Michael Frame, Emil's uncle who trans- ported him to a small midwestern college town, only to find that he had a Hitler youth on his hands. Marjorie O'Madigan gave an understanding interpretation of Leona Richards, Michael's fiance, who gained the boy's hatred by her Jewish blood. The loving pose below was one of the many torrid little scenes between the two which added to the appeal of the play. Jessie Frame, Michael's idolizing sister who turned to Emil for comfort when her brother announced his marriage plans, was play- ed by Erbel Simmons. Pat, Michael's daughter by a previous mar- riage, who took up for Emil repeatedly, only to receive a blow on the head for her trouble, was played by Myrtle Mae du Perier. Beulah Mae Dimmitt was Frieda, the Frame's maid, German by birth, but American by choice, and Jerry Asaro the college janitor, Fred Miller, who had his eye on the key to the professor's labora- tory, and the military secrets behind its doors. Jimmy Mall, For- rest Smith, ond Morris Drew McCall deserve honorable mention for their able characterization of Dennis, Tommy, and Butler, Pat's three friends whom she paid to come to the party she gave for Emil. After seeing the play, we didn't wonder that it played to a full house all during the '43, and '44 stage season, and that it was vot- ed one of the outstanding moving pictures of the year. We only wonder that our senior cast wasn't imported to play the roles on Broadway, and in Hollywood. After some confusion, 'het' 'Plan a quiet wedding, but Grandma Day lJune 'EnglishJ, Aunt Kate lBobby Sue Cainl, and Aunt Annie lShirley Furbyl are af a different opinion. Professor Fud KArthur Beckl, a publisher, arrives at the Day home with a reporter Uoyce Pintschl, who is immediately captur- ed by, Grandma Da-y. Mrs. Bustle lEvelyn Balcarl, the general housekeeper and Leota lGrace Abneyl, the maid, have their hands full preparing for all the wedding guests, while the plumber lParker Folsel odds his wit to the situation. Danny's girl friend, Piggy Uacqueline Myersl, creates several high moments with her chemical explosions. Harriet Day lwMargaret Wileyl, the daughter-in-law, is the pac- ificator in the Day family, and does her bit in solving the Day's problems. With everything under control, Reverend Frederick lJoe Moutonl begins the ceremony. Miss Dorothy Coats did a superb job in directing her first pro- duction at B. H. S. Those contributing to the success of the play were Betty Wyatt, Billy Richard, Charles Landry, Eldon Chester, Beulah Mae Dimmitt, Marilyn Neil, and Felice Michelson, Miss Fannie Bouton, in charge of properties, was assisted by Grace Lillja, Mary Terrell, and David Cargill. -H 87 ll- 'ESJLJ f s Q 1 W ? 6 41 ' ,,. ..j'K .. is .S QQ'T ' School News Fl1RST SEM'ESTlElR Co-Editors: Myrtle Mae duPerier and Reed Quilliam: News Editor: Martha Jane Morris: Associate Editors: Fred Sutton and Joe Hodges: Sports Editors: Butler Hancock and Mildred Whatley: Feature Editors: Jay Crager and Wylie Harris: Make-up Editor: Langley Hellwig: Exchange Editor: Sam Smith: Photography: Howard Wingren: Printing: Channing Padgett: Copy Editor: Doris Jane Wilder: Typing: Cala Sue Carroll: Circulation: Jimmy Moll: Printing Instructor: E. Meetings are held during the sixth period every Monday, and talks concerning the topic of the program are given by the four discussion leaders--two on the affirmative side, and two on the negatixe. which are followed by a general class debate. The questions for debates range from local affairs to in- ternational problems, and the students select their own topics. Some of the topics which hate been discussed at regular meetings are as follows: Dewey or Roosexeltg XVhat to Do XY'ith Germany Compulsory Military Training: Should the lilectoral System of Electing the President Be Changed?1 Has l-fnglund Acted Unwisely and Unfairli XY'ith Greece?g Voice of Youth Members Herbert Allen, Anna Jean Baldwin, Lois Jean Cooper, Jay Crager, Wilma Eddins, Audrey Ellis, Parker False, Edward Frost, Leonard Goldstein, Donny Greenberg, Joe Grcene,, Butler Hancock, George Hayes, Dorothy Henderson, Dare Keelan, Nadine Langford, Thomas Lipscomb, George Love, Gloria Luke, Felice Michelson, Ray Mitchell, Durwood Norwood, Bills Richard, Kenneth Richardson, of 90 Youth Should the Chinese Government Cooperate With the Chinese Communists?g Should Persia Grant Oil Concessions to Rus- sia?g Should the Treaty Power of the United States be Cur- tailed?g and Should a National Service Law Be Passed? Aside from the regular Monday meetings, the Voice of Youth Club occasionally presents an outside program. This year several of these programs have been given. October the eighteenth a two-act play on the Constitution was pre- sented at the Rotary Club, and repeated on the nineteenth in the Beaumont High School Auditorium. Post-War Ed- ucation was the theme of the discussion given November 29th at 7:50 P. M. over KRIC on the Pilot Club's Forum of the Airn. In the Voice of Youth Club, students learn to investigate problems and to present both sides of a question, which is very necessary in the democratic way of life, The purpose of this organization is to further patriotism, to improve Clt' izenship, and to create interest in domestic and foreign af- fairs. You'll be amazed at how quickly small savings accumulate into substantial amounts, when dividends are compounded semi-annually! All investments at this institution, up to 35,000 are insured by an instrumentality of the United States Government. And we have paid all our shareholders dividends of not less than 255 per cent per annum for 22 years without interruption. And oh, yes-when the time comes to build a home for yourself and the One-and-Only, maybe we can help you out on the little matter of financing it!
