II a du ll eu s SHAW'S GARDEN Dol PH Wioxr R wo RICHARD VANDERGRII T The Missouri Botanical Garden more popularly known as Shaw s Gar den has been an outstanding attraction in St Louis ever since it was opened to the public in l860 Occupying seventy five acres in South St Louis the Garden represents the largest collection of plant life in North America having within its collection more than l2 000 species of plants The Garden which is modeled after the Kew Gardens of London is administered by a group of trustees and receives no funds from either city or state being financed almost exclusively by the estate left by Henry Shaw Upon entering the Main Gate the visitor is welcomed to the Garden by a long series of lily pools which terminate at the mam greenhouse To the right of the lily pools is located the rose garden and to the left are many buildings of historical interest Among the popular attractions of the Garden are four nationally known flower shows orchids in January and February iris in late May chrysanthe mums in November and pomsettxas in December There are also plant cur1os1 ties the believe it or nots of the plant world numerous lily pools rose gardens and an Italian formal garden The Missouri Botanical Garden s specialties are its collections of orchlds of the mam entrance are the conservatories display houses and formal gar dens Great masses of rare and unusual iris and chrysanthemums are grown here In specially constructed houses are some of the world s rarest orchids as well as trees palms and hundreds of plant curxosities The winter flowering shrubs are displayed in the Lmnean House northwest of the main entrance It is the only greenhouse remaining of those erected during Mr Shaw s life time and one of the few mid nineteenth century greenhouses left in the country Today the historical attractions of the Garden vie with the living ones for popularity They include Shaw s country home Tower Grove which is furnished much as it was in Shaw s time and is now open to the public Shaw s tomb a museum and Shaw s town home with the Italian marble mantels the wrought iron open grille doors and the mam stairway This house was moved to the Garden and now serves as the Administration building The Bo tamcal Library contains a general collection of botanical publications with more than 52 O00 books 82 OOO pamphlets and many manuscripts The activities of the Garden are many and varied They include the maintenance of an arboretum at Grey Summit Missouri a tropical station at Balboa in the Canal Zone a laboratory and a famous botanical library The Garden also does research in the development of new plant varieties and pub lrshes various bulletins and other literature One Hundred Thlrfq Iour tropical water lilies, daffodils, snowdrops, hardy ivy, and cacti.
