Ca uceud WHAT IT TAKES TO IVIAKE A HIGH SCHOOL ALM RT H HUNTINGTON Prmctpul Twenty one years ago February lst the Beaumont Htgh School plant was opened Its ortgtnal faculty numbered exactly one hundred and tts student body numbered two thousand our hundred and ntnety one At that ttme the butld tng was constdered the finest that could be butlt adapted to the most up to date methods of tnstructton and operatton Today we are examtntng our procedures and practtces and trytng to altgn them wtth practtces that wtll make for a more efftctent school We cannot stand sttll because Itfe doesn t stand sttll We must gtve the boys and gtrls who come to us the best of care whtle they are wtth us We must connect our tnstructton vt tth vt hat they know of Itfe and thetr expert ences tn tt and we must try to tnsptrtt them wtth the tdea that they should do thetr best tn the communtty tn whtch they ind themselves To matntatn thts htgh school tn North St Louts two hundred and etghty stx teachers have been employed tn the past twenty one years Of these ntnety one novs rematn as the faculty of the present school Approxtmately thtrty stx thousand boys and gtrls have passed through the hands of these teachers About twelve thousand have rematned four years have completed thetr work success fully and have graduated The growth of Beaumont Htgh School ts due to the unsttnted devotton of the teachers who have constttuted tts faculty and vtho have stood by tt steadfastly durtng the enttre pertod of tts extstence Thts faculty ts gradually rettrtng We need to take tts place a group of teachers who wtll carry on just as understandtngly and just as unsttnttngly as dtfficulty tn securtng sattsfactory replacements In a democracy however much depends upon the schooltng that the average ctttzen recety es We hope that from our own classrooms there wtll come a new group of teachers to carry on and tnsttll the lessons of democracy that are necessary for the preservatton of our country A school has no vsay of earntng money for ttself but tt constantly needs tt to meet tts tnstructton operatton and matntenance costs Whtle the school plant was modern twenty years ago tt needs now Qlj a new roof espectally over tts lunchroom It needs f2l a moderntzed audttortum tn whtch phystcal management shall be easy and tn whtch the acousttcal qualtttes shall be equal to those of a movtng ptcture theatre It needs O3 up to date cooktng rooms The equtpment here suffers much tn compartson wtth the equtpment tn a present day home even though that home be a yery stmple one It needs C45 a rebutlt swtmmtng pool The abtltty to svttm ts one of the most useful of the phystcal acttttttes taught tn htgh school and may be the means of savtng Itfe It needs f5J proyectton rooms on each floor so that our tnstructton may profit by the use of motton ptctures whtch gtyes a new avenue through whtch the teacher may appeal to the student Whtle there are other needs to sattsfy these wtll cost a good deal of money In the past tt has been satd that the best school could be the one where a great teacher sat on one end of a board across a log and hts puptl sat on the other Ltfe ts not so stmple as thts quotatton vt ould seem to tmply and a school butld tng exen wtth a dey oted faculty and good understandtng support of the com muntty vshtch tt sery es ts not so good a place tn whtch to teach unless tt reflects the opportuntttes and prtttleges tnstde tt that the student has tn hts datly Itfe Four 5 . . 1 , 1 ' I , V I , . . .
