PRESENTATION At last we are seniors, and to many it would seem that we have finally attained our ultimate goal. Yet, it is only in being seniors that we realize that we have completed but one step towards fulfilling our goal of success in life. We stand now on the threshold of decision. The knowledge which the last twelve years have lent us has come about through the devotion and understanding of our faculty and advisors, and it is upon this knowledge that we shall lean in making these all-important decisions. Our high school days have been filled with many fond memories which we shall not soon forget. We have risen with the thought of that which we have achieved in the past, and will strive with what we have learned to better ourselves in future years. Thus, it is with high hopes and fond memories that we leave with you this, our 1963 MAINSAIL. No matter how high we rise, We discover infinite distances above. —Parlette 01012353484823482348535353535353480102 1 DEDICATION Since we have entered high school, our lives have been affect- ed by many individuals. Among these there is one that stands out in our minds. This person has given to us through guidance and encouragement much time and effort. Our deep feeling of appre- ciation for this particular man stems from his having come to Beau- fort just as we entered high school. Being truly grateful for the op- portunities extended to us by him we are honored to dedicate this edition to our Principal. We, the Seniors, therefore, dedicate the 1963 MAINSAIL to MR. ALBERT R. GAINEY, with deep appreciation and sincere thanks. 2 The call to make human life in this world happier, more useful and brighter, is real and imperative. Christians look to the Word of God as a source of help, some inkling of what should be done to meet pre- sent and future problems. I challenge you to go forth into this complex and difficult world and love it for all the challenges and opportunities it offers. Try to do for men rather than covet their possessions. Keep in mind that a truly successful life is not made by taking for yourself that which others have a right to share, but by ren- dering to others that which is worth more to them than they give in return. Live in such a way that you can say with James Russell Lowell: God bends forth from the great deep and says, 'I gave thee the great gift of life; Wast thou not called in many ways? Are not my earth and Heaven at strife? I gave thee of my seed to sow, Brought thou me a hundred fold! ’ Can I look up with my face aglow And answer, 'My Father, here is Gold'. 3 MAINSAIL STAFF GEORGE GIBBS Editor-in-chief DORIS YOUNG Business Manager SARAH KIRK Assistant Editor NORMA M ERR ELL Assistant Business Manager 4 CIRCULATION STAFF Virginia Potter, Mary June Merrill, Jimmy Salter, Cecil Moore SPORTS STAFF Johnny Hassell PICTURE STAFF Daniel Nelson, Joe Bellamah, Mah- lon Williams, Ann Williams, Judy Fulcher, Lloyd Staton LITERARY STAFF Anne Clemmons, Leslie Croom 5 PUBLICITY STAFF Jackie Neal, Walter House IN MEMORIAM MEMORIAM The class of 1963 leaves this fourteenth edition of the Mainsail in memoriam to the late Mr. George A. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Now as our life at Beaufort High School is coming to an end, it is with great pride that we look back on our many accomplishments. Our class had made a distinguished name for itself not only in the school but also in the community in which we live. We have students from our class who have succeeded in scholarship, athletics, and other endeavors. We have set a stand- ard at B.H.S. which will be a goal for upcoming classes to live up to. In leaving, we would like to thank our faculty and principal for all the aid they have given to make us better citizens. Without them, the class of '63 would not have been the class that it was--the greatest that ever graduated from the halls of B.H.S. 12 JOSEPH VICTOR BELLA MAH “I have nothing to declare ex- cept my genius. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE At last, we carry the proud title of Juniors. We have left behind us the fond memories of our Freshman and Sophomore years. We like to think of our class as the best Junior class yet. We boast three cheerleaders, five majorettes, six band members, eighteen varsity football and basketball players, and many participants in every club in our high school. We have before us the presentation of the Junior Senior Banquet. With many hard workers and three capable advisors, we are confident that our banquet will be a good one. Next year we shall be Seniors. We look forward to our final year in great anticipation. 40 Gerald Austin, Dail Barbour, Mary Ruth Beachem, Judy Becton, Tommy Bell, Carol Betters, Elizabeth Bolin Donald Cannon, John Cannon, Ray Courtney, Billy Davis, Don Davis, Fred Davis, Carrie Lee Dickinson Guy Dickinson, Allen Dudley, Mary Ann Dudley, Gay Felton, Patty Frivance, Carl Fulcher, Larry Garner Suzanne Guthrie, Dorothy Jackson, K. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE We, the Sophomore Class, feel that we will soon be entering our prime in high school. As we look back at our records, we find that we are more mature now than were the silly fresh- men in 62. With great desire, we will strive to fulfill the standards that were set by our upper class- men. Both scholastically and athletically, we have set our goals, to achieve excellence in the classroom and to be superior in sports. We sincerely wish to thank our advisors, Mrs. Joyner, Mrs. Caldwell, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Young, for bringing us closer to our goals. As our second year of high school comes to a close, we look into the future with greater expectations. 42 A. Becton, M. E. Bellamah M. Bertram, F. Biermann J. Bridgers, G. Broda L. Burrows R. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE We, as Freshmen, have reached a goal on our climb to graduation that once seemed so far away. Now that we have reached high school, we find that there is still much to be accom- plished. We are represented well in the school’s activities with participants in majorettes, cheer- leaders, Junior Varsity football and basketball, Varsity basketball and football and various clubs. Our ambition is to have the greatest number of honor students and outstanding members of any class of Beaufort High School. This ambition can be achieved only through the best efforts of all the students in the Class of 1966. 45 p ? p p AJkJLi .’ r I Pictured k. Aa J. Adair, P. Almond C. Arrington, C. Ballou C.
