MAINSAIL 1962 PRESENT A TION Of the past twelve years at Beaufort High School, our last four will be the most memorable. It was during these years that we learned, through the wisdom and guidance of our teachers, to accept and fulfill various responsibilities. It has required many hours of conscientious effort and much perseverance; but we earnestly feel that, in this, the compiling of a yearbook, our greatest and most important responsibility, we have once again reached the satisfaction of achievement. Therefore, with the sincere desire of sharing with you the joy that has been ours in publishing this annual, we, the Senior Class of 1962, proudly and eagerly present the 1962 MAINSAIL. Three years have passed since his arrival at Beaufort High School. Three years, and we still have not found adequate words to express the honor that he deserves. Here is a man who, in the classroom or on the field, has never failed to exhibit those characteristics which we know are essential in setting an example for others. Always willing to show personal concern for each of his students, earnestly seeking to share with them the knowledge that he has gained from his own experiences, and having the ability to accomplish these things with a somewhat humorous overtone, he stands among the greatest. Surely there can be no question as to the place that he holds in the minds and hearts of those who have been fortunate enough to know him. Therefore, in striving to make a great yearbook synonymous with an even greater coach and friend, we wish to dedicate the 1962 MAINSAIL, as an ex- pression of earnest gratitude and boundless admiration, to you, COACH CURTIS LANCASTER 3 “COACH'’ Roberta West Editor-in-Chief Nancy Huntley Business Manager Carl Tilghman Assistant Editor William H. Although you have encountered many difficulties in reaching your present plateau, you must realize that there will be more difficult problems to meet. At times you may be somewhat apprehensive, but this feeling must be overcome by the de- termination to succeed. Wisdom is a product of education. Education is a continuous process. SENIORS OFFICERS PRESIDENT Joe Eastman VICE-PRESIDENT Charles Dickinson SECRETARY Claudia Taylor TREASURER Nancy Huntley REPORTER Ray Hassell PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We, the Senior Class, are very proud of our accomplishments during the past four years in high school. We have striven to place our school among the best in the state. It is our sincere desire that those who follow in our footsteps will profit by our examples. Throughout high school, we have accepted our responsibilities with the utmost of pride and have enjoyed the reward of achievement which has been received with each task. Yet we recognize the fact that these responsibilities are trivial in comparison to those which will confront us in future years. May our success continue and may each of our fellow classmates go far in his chosen field of endeavor. As time passes, we shall ever cherish the fond memories of many hours of work and companionship at Beaufort High. 12 GLORIA ANN ARTHUR Gloria Well-timed silence hath more elo- quence than speech. This year we shall meet many projects that will require much hard work. But the willingness to work is an outstanding trait of this class. Of course, the largest project that we shall undertake this year will be the Junior-Senior Banquet. Many of us have successfully participated in the two which were produced since we have been in high school. We have been planning this year's Junior-Senior for a long while and guarantee that it will be one of the best. As a very active class, we have fifteen students who participate in competitive sports, three cheer- leaders, four majorettes, and many who are members of the various clubs. We greatly anticipate our Senior year and plan to leave Beaufort High School with a very successful record. 44 Alice Beacham Joe Bellamah David Beveridge Sandy Boswell Tommy Bridgers Sammy Brooks Paul Bryant Anne Clemmons Donald Conway Leslie Croom Jimmy Cummings Carol Dyess Ann Fulcher Judy Fulcher George Gibbs Ronnie Gillikin Wayne Glover Margie Grant Bill Hamilton Johnny Hassell Joyce Herbert Jarvis Herring Shirley Hill Walter House Robert Ison Ricky Johnson Earl Jones Sarah Kirk Richard Klemm Carl Klein Billy Laughinghouse Verdie Lawrence Randolph Lewis Sheron Lewis Johnny Long Helen Longest Gene Mason Margaret Merrill Mary June Merrill Norma Merrill Cecil Moore Jackie Neal Daniel Nelson Anne Newcomb Dorothy Penny Marion Pokrzyvwa Virginia Potter Mike Ricks Linda Roberts Jimmy Salter Barbara Sue Simpson Ester Small Mike Smith Danny Sowers Lloyd Staton L. We know the footsteps of our upperclassmen will be hard to fill, but we will do our best. If we are fortunate enough to have other advisers like Mrs. Jones, Mr. Banks, and Miss Overman, the fulfillment of our tasks will be easily accomplished. Congratulations to the Senior class on a wonderful year and an equally wonderful Mainsail The best of luck to all of them in future years. 46 G. Austin, D. Barbour M.R. Beacham, J. Becton T. Bell, C. Our enthusiasm has continued, but our fears have vanished. We feel that we have taken our place in high school and have accomplished a good beginning. Our class boasts of three majorettes, two cheerleaders, fifteen football players, and twenty-five Junior-Varsity basketball participants. We report with pride that one boy and two girls are on the Varsity basketball teams. With this fine start, we know that our class will play a big part in the continuing athletic success of the school. Scholastically, we strive for excellence, also, and look forward to the acclaim which we hope to merit when we have attained the status of Seniors. Our ambition is to make our school proud of the class of '65. 48 A. Becton, M.E. Bellamah M. Bertram, F. Biermann J. Bridgers, G. Broda R. Brown j. Burrows, R. Cahoon J. Chadwick, C. Conner B. We, the Seniors, have decided to acknowledge those teachers, from the first through eighth grades, who have prepared us for four of the most important years of our lives. There is no way that we can sufficiently express the extent of our appreciation and gratitude for the many hours which they have so freely given to us. However, we have chosen to rec- ognize especially one who, to the class of '62, will always remain dear. For she has not only instructed us in the knowledge of books, but she has imparted to us a wisdom and understanding possessed by few others. For this reason, we reserve for her a place in our annual as well as in our hearts. We say, Thank you, MRS. SHIRLEY BABCOCK. They have established for themselves a reputation as the winningest team in North Carolina history and the only team in Tar Heel basketball to win three consecutive State Championships. The Big Green of 61-'62 will miss the talents of Pud Hassell, David Jones, and Eddie Taylor. These players did much for the success of the Seadogs. But the end of Beaufort’s glorious reign in Class A ranks has come to an end. Having retired as undefeated 3-time State Champs, the Seadogs strive to maintain their fine records as outstanding athletes and to prove once again their fine sportsmanship in the Class 2-A Coastal Conference. This success has left them a reputation which will always be a challenge to uphold. The success of the Seadogs over the years reflects the high standards of leadership, character, and skills as taught by Coach Thomas H. McQuaid. He is to be commended for the fine achievements which were wrought by his efforts. The class of '62 wishes to express its best wishes to the Seadogs of the future as they strive to continue the success of champions. And this is a team, not five individuals trying to prove their skills, but one unit working together in the tradition of Beaufort sports- manship. This group, under pressure, exhibits the best in basketball performance with as many as three players scoring in the double digits. All of this has been achieved through the coaching of Coach Tom McQuaid. How- ever, with his record of wins, the state’s best basketball coach still states, The boys are the ones who do it. It is a coach's dream to have a group who wants to play as this one did. I wish them continuous success in all they try to do.
