PRESENTATION During our journey through Beaufort High, we have undertaken and completed many worth-while projects which have brought joy and praise to us. Needless to say, our annual, the largest and most important of our projects, has entailed much thought and hard work. We have burned the midnight oil under great stress and strain, but we have burned it willingly and conscientiously. This, the twelfth edition of the Mainsail, is the consumation of our efforts. It is our sincere hope that it will hold fond memories of your high school days. It is with great joy and humble pride that we, the seniors of B.H.S. present to you the 1961 Mainsail. 2 WE DEDICATE • • • WE DEDICATE .... To our beloved counselor, advisor, teacher, and friend. She has been strength for our weak- ness, guidance for our shortcomings, and knowledge for our education. She has endeavored tirelessly to instill in us purpose, character, humility, and other rudiments necessary for success. She has unselfishly given to us the benefits of her knowledge and experience, of subjects related to our social and economic growth as well as our basic education. These are the qualities of our model teacher, to whom we will be forever indebted. In appreciation for all she has done, we dedi- cate the MAINSAIL 1961 to Miss Lena Nelson Duncan. 4 Sa MAINSAIL STAFF 3-73 333 %e%' '6 7 Bobby Metz, Assistant Editor; Pud Hassell, Editor-in-Chief; David Jones, Business Manager; Lillie Grace Herbert, Assistant Business Manager. For twelve years you have worked to prepare yourself to be a valuable adult citizen in a democracy. As you encounter the many problems of adulthood, I hope that you can recall the teachings of those who have taught you during your schooldays, and from these teachings be able to cope with lifefs problems success- fully. Worthy ambition, adequate preparation, and sincere commitment to life are keynotes to success. So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Albert R. We feel we have set some shining examples in all the activities of our school. We do challenge all who may follow us to exceed our achievements and go on to do far greater things. We also urge our fellow students to always strive for the improvement of our school; it will never be any more than what we make it ourselves. 16 CHARLES THOMAS ARTHUR Chas Hethat mischief hatcheth; mischief catcheth. As we look back on this year, we feel we have progressed far from ’’Silly Freshmen”. We have taken part in many of the school’s activities and have done our best to improve ourselves and Beaufort High School. In these we feel we have succeeded. Much of our success we owe to our advisors; Mr. McQuaid, Mrs. Beveridge, Mr. Lockard, and our principal Mr. Gainey. As we begin our next step into high school, we hope to become a vital part of Beaufort School. If this hope is achieved, we will continue to do our best for our school. The 1960 Mainsail had already been sent to press when the Fabulous Seadogs captured their second consecutive Class A State Championship in basket- ball. The perfect season ran the victory string to an amazing 51 straight games over a two year span. There was never any doubt as to the out- come of the season as the Seadogs rolled over every foe with relative ease and a comfortable margin of at least 20 points. His teams have almost completely dominated the Class A ranks in the past five years, and many refer to him as the best basketball coach in the entire state. The school is also very proud of the fact that our boys received many favorable com- ments on their behavior in hotels and restaurants while on the tournament trips ; all-round State Champs! 69 CHAMPS IN ACTION The Big Stretch Battle Under The Boards Butch Tries Ballet Two For Pud David hits Big Cal rebounds Champs Take Over High Point Big Mac Returns The Victor Again Ray drives for two FOOTBALL 1960 First Row, Left to Right: Bobby Hill, Gene Mason, Mahlon Williams, Floyd Temple, Frank Sides, Ray Hassell, Pud Hassell, Robert Jones. Among the accomplishments of the team was the establishment of a new State record; that of not allowing a single point to be scored in 13 consecutive ball games. Our fine coaching staff is to be more than commended for the manner in which our young men conducted themselves, both on and off the field. They have proven once again that the building of character is all important in the makeup of a championship team. We feel sure that these young men will reflect credit on the school inall their endeavors.
