Needless to say, our annual is the largest and most important of these projects. It has entailed much hard work and time-consuming thought and energy, which we have givenwillingly and conscientious- iy. This, the eleventh edition of the MAINSAIL, is the accumulation of our efforts. It is our sincere hope that this annual will always hold fond memories for you and will ever prove a source of enjoyment as you reread it over the years to come. It is with great pride that we, the Senior Class of Beaufort High School, present to you the 1960 MAINSAIL. Dedication Through the years that we have known her, this person has instilled in us a desire to grow in knowledge through improvement of our cultural selves. Through her wisdom and guidance, we have come to realize the value and importance of learning. She has done her utmost to direct us with untiring patience and understanding. In her own quiet and exemplary way, she has inspired us to think, work and live to the height of our capabilities. Always willing to help and advise, she has proved to be an indispensable part of our high school years. Thus it is with deepest appreciation and greatest pride that we dedicate this, the 1960 MAINSAIL, to you, MRS. GRACE FODRIE. I am proud of your coopera- tiveness, your friendly enthusiasm and your spirit of fun. Yet I am apprehensive. I fear that upon leaving school, yoi may fail to grow and broaden. You must realize that life necessitates a constant expanding of mind and heart in ordei to be lived successfully and fully. I fear, also, that you may forget your responsibilities as citizens. Although abilities may vary, life's responsibility does not—each person is called upon to live and serve with the best of his capabilities. A principal feels that he should tell each graduating class many things, but Rudyard Kipling has expressed the essence of these thoughts in this quotation from his poem, If. If you can keep your head, When all around are losing theirs Then you'll be a man my son! 12 As secretary to the principal, Miss Hill has one of the most responsible and time-consuming jobs at school. She has more than met her responsibilities. She has diligently devoted her time and energy for the benefit of our school. Acting as friend and advisor to all, she has proven herself more than necessary to us. We deeply appreci- ate all she has done for us. MISS VIRGINIA HILL MRS. GRACE FODRIE The library is naturally a vital part of school life. We are very fortunate in that we have an excellent librarian who devotes her all to operating smoothly a well-equipp- ed library. In addition to this, Mrs. Fodrie is assistant principal and school treasurer. Her duties are many and varied, and she has always fulfilled them with more than adequacy. She is a vital and much-respected member of the faculty. 13 Lunchroom Staff First row, left to right: Blanche Everett, Marcella Cain, Mary Murphy, Hazel Chadwick, Olabell Willis, Helen Arthur, Edith Pratt. H. S come to a close, it is with a feeling of great pride that we look back on the past twelve years. Our class has made numerous contributions to the school as well as the community in which we live. From our class have come many outstanding students in scholastics, athletics and other activities. The record of B.H.S. has been upheld and has been improved by th seniors of '60. This we realize could not have been possible withou the help of our faculty and principal. To them we say thanks for helping us, the graduating class, to becomi one of the greatest in annuals of B. H. S. 16 JOANNE JULIA ALLEN Josie Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Young Flower Rose Colors Green and White Class Poem Through the years we've been together, We have come to realize That to work and learn together Is to strengthen friendship's ties. In all things we have been as one, And our rewards have been The joy of seeing work well done And sharing it with friends. Now our happy years are o'er, And each must go his way; Yet in each heart, forevermore, The memories will stay. So with hearts full and heads held high And eyes turned toward the sun, We bid one fond, one last goodbye. . . Our high school days are done. Many times during the past year upperclassmen have teased us and called us that, but Mrs. Beveridge, Mr. Fodrie and Mr. McQuaid have ably guided us over these and other rough spots this year. Though we were slow in starting, gradually we have gained momentum. We now boast of four Student Council representatives, seven Debating Club members, three cheerleaders and two majorettes. Throughout the rest of high school, whether on the athletic field or in the classroom, we will strive to be a credit to our school. 36 ALICE BEACHAM STEVE BEACHAM JOE BELLA MAH DAVID BEVERIDGE SANDY BOSWELL TOMMY BRIDGERS SAM BROOKS ANNE CLEMMONS ANN CONWAY DONALD CONWAY RAYMOND COURTNEY SHIRLEY COURTNEY JIMMY CUMMINGS CECIL DUDLEY CAROL DYESS ANN FULCHER JUDY FULCHER GEORGE GIBBS RONNIE GILUKIN WAYNE CLOVER EDWARD GUTHRIE BILL HAMILTON RANDY HARDY JOHNNY HASSELL JOYCE HERBERT JARVIS HERRING SHIRLEY HILL WALTER HOUSE RICHARD HUNNINCS ROBERT ISON RICKY JOHNSON EARL JONES SARAH KIRK CARL KLEIN RICHARD KLEMM BILL LAUGHINGHOUSE BARBARA LAWRENCE VERDIE LAWRENCE RUDOLPH LEWIS SHERON LEWIS RONALD LONG HELEN LONGEST GLORIA MATTHEWS JIMMY MATTHEWS GENE MASON MARGARET MERRILL MARY JUNE MERRILL CECIL MOORE JACKIE NEALK' DANIEL NELSON RICHARD NEWMAN DOROTHY PENNY TIMOTHY PENNY JOE PITTMAN KENNETH PITTMAN SHIRLEY PIVER MARION POKRZYWA VIRGINIA POTTER MICHAEL RICKS JIMMIE SALTER SUE SIMPSON ESTHER SMALL CARY STALLINGS LLOYD STATON L. Standing: Douglas Swain, Ray Hassell, Chuck Lewis, The determination of the Seadogs proved sufficient. With an undefeated season, they ultimately captured the Class A crown. Their record of twenty-seven victories was unmarred. The team work of capable individuals proved to be the winning factor. Compliments were re- ceived, not only for their performances on the court, but Calvin Jones, Allen Autry, Charles Hassell, Frank Potter David Jones, Leon Thomas. also for their personal behavior in public. Yes, the omens were with the 1959 Seadogs. The boys have said that theii singing, Where Were You On My Wedding Day and Everybody Likes To Cha-Cha-Cha, contributed to theii victories. They are true State Champs, man! LARRY DUDLEY Manager COACH T. H. McQUAID Again it is said that Coach T.H. McQuaid is the most admired and respected man at B. H. S. It is the unanimous feeling of the players that Coach McQuaid is still the cham- pion coach he has always been. In allhis years at B.H.S., he has never had a losing season. His guidance has filled the school with trophies. Coach McQuaid is able to bring out the best in a player.Superstitious as he is, he has thrown away the old suit, but has the green tie and socks. Third row: Piggy Potter, Chuck Lewis, Vic Smith, Daniel Nelson, Frank Sides, Eddie Taylor, Ernest House, Ray Hassell. Not pic- tured: Jerry Gillikin. The 1959 football squad made history at Beaufort High School. They brought the coveted STATE CHAMPION- SHIP to the school for the first time. Besides winning the championship, they renewed the waning interest in foot- ball. The enthusiasm of the team was tremendous, and it has been said this was a contributing factor to their success. Their won-loss was excellent. During the play- off games, no opposing team was able to score against the fighting Seadogs. The team were true champions on the field, and they were champions off the field also. Their behavior on their trips to and from the games and in public was commended by all. The 1959 Seadogs are a group of boys that will be remembered for along time. CAPTAINS Calvin Jones Freddie Hooper Denard Harris Butch Hassell COACHES Jimmy Fodrie, Curt Lancaster, The coaching Staff was probably the most essential part of the championship team. Head Coach Curtis Lancaster made his coaching debut at B.H.S. From the very first he had the respect of every member of the squad. They admired his excellent character and his coaching abilities. Coach Jimmy Fodrie was a very important assistant to Coach Lan- caster. He was not only a coach but also a champion to the boys. Coach Tom Ralph Hewitt gave devotedly his time toward the effort of the team. He was well-liked by the boys. Coach Lewitt also coached the J.V. team.
