THE SENIOR CLASS of Beaufort High School Presents RAE FRANCES HASSELL- Editor JEAN CHADWICK- Business Manager Foreword . . . The Senior Class presents the 1957 edition of The Mainsail. In this year's an- nual we have tried to present our outstanding people, our activities, and our athletics as we see them every day and as we shall always remember them. We feel that in so doing we have captured the heart of our school. Our greatest wish is that the 1957 annual will be just that to you, and that in future years, as you turn Its pages, you will feel, once more, the happiness, the helpfulness, the excitement, and the friend- liness that is B.H.S. Our thanks to one and all who have made this annual possible. We appreciate the helpand consideration given us by the faculty and principal. Also, we wish to thank the merchants and clubs for their support. And now, the 1957 edition of The Mainsail is yours. THE EDITOR. . . Dedication c He has been with us only three years, but we have all grown to love him. His wisdom and understanding have led us up the long road to maturity. Through his knowledge and guidance, we have learned the true meaning of sports- manship, loyalty, and school spirit. He has taught us to play the game fairly whether we win or not, for the real winner is the one who takes a defeat cheerfully. In appreciation for his guidance and understanding, we, the Senior class of 1957, dedicate this, our annual, with humble thanks, to Coach Hugh Gordon. . . . Faculty B. E. TARKINGTON My sincerest thanks to the class of '57 for the fine record they have made in our Principal school. You have proven on numerous occasions that you can take a problem and always come out with the most satisfactory answer for alI concerned. Your Junior- Senior Banquet was a perfect example of full'cooperation and well organized activity. My hope will be that you continue to use your talents with and for the good of others. By doing this I can assure you that life will always have a fuller and richer meaning for each of you. You bear a label Graduate Of Beaufort High School, so live to add honor and glory to your school, community and God. CLASS COLORS Green and White CLASS FLOWER Rose CLASS MASCOTS TERRI BRODA IVEY CHADWICK Class History We, the class of '57 finish our final year at Beaufort High, and we hope we have outgrown the reputation bestowed upon us when we entered high school. Looking back on our freshman year, in 1953, we were no different from the fresh- men that had gone before us. We were scared! Scared of the duties we would have to perform and scared of our upper-classmen. All in all that year was wonderful; for our leaders made it so. We can thank Mrs. Fodrie, Mrs. Beveridge, and Mr. McQuaid for the help and kind understanding all freshmen look for. The end of that year came and presto. Sophomores! We had a grand time that year. The teachers began to see us for what we really were. We were ho longer scared students. We had someone below us now! The Seniors, at that time, began to be more friendly with us, and a couple of Senior boys became interested in some Sophomore girls. We gave the Seniors a beach party, and the memory of it will al- ways linger in our minds. We grew up that year with the help of our faithful Mrs. Fodrie and Mr. Harrell. In 1955, we claimed the title of Juniors. We had to show to all we were worthy of that title. We were determinded to do just that; for when we entered high school we were given the reputation of being a wild and disorganized group. Our banquet was the turning point for us. We showed our teachers we could work together and really accomplish something great. Naturally, every banquet is thought to have been the best yet, and ours was no exception. The Night Club was a hit, and it was all done through partnership and determination. We want to thank Mrs. Shuey and Mrs. Lawrence for being so patient with us, for they are the ones who deserve the credit for making our Junior year the best yet. Now we are Seniors! Our minds are broader and our hearts happier, for we feel we have done much for our school. This year will never be forgotten. No matter where we go or what we do, we'll always remember Miss Duncan and Miss Smith for the guidance they gave to us. And now it's over! Four of the happiest years we could ever experience. This year has been great for each and everyone of us. The sports, activities, the Senior Privileges, and our Christmas Program have helped to make it great. We, the Seniors of '57, want to thank you, the facutly, for showing us the right road to a better education and for making our horizons brighter and our ambitions more meaningful as we look to the future years that lie before us. PAUL....................Manager PUD HASSELL......... Assistant Manaaer Prophecy Five years have elapsed. The Class of '57 is holding its first reunion. Of course this group ot young men and women is quite different from the group of gangly, awkward boys and girls who de- parted from B.H.S. just five years ago. This class was so famous that Barbara Taylor, who is now editor of the Carteret County News- Times, has decided to write an article telling what has happened to each member. And believe me, success istheonly way to describe this class. Oh, here are a few notes I've made for the article. Dawn Taylor, who is a former president of the B.H.S. Prayer Group, has entered the missionary field and is now serving in the little African village. Last Outpost. Nancy Broda is the new principal of our old Alma Mater. (Oh, here's some sad news. It finally became too much for Mr. Tarkington. Not long after the class of '57 graduated, he was caught SMOKING in the halls of B.H.S.) On Nancy's staff are two very dependable teachers. The first is Jane Safrit, who is Assistant Teacher in Miss Gladys Chadwick's Senior Latin class. And it is rumored that she is very strict. Seems she gives the students 2 stories to translate every night. Don't be so cruel, Jane. Remember how we used to hate to translate? The other class member on Nancy's staff is Vonda Goodwin. Vonda teaches Physical Ed and Health and coaches the girl's basketball team. By the way, the team has a perfect record so far. They've even beaten Pamilcol Catherine Potter, a sensational new opera star has just made headlines by eloping with Elvis Presley. His private secretary, Margaret Springle, was admitted to a mental institution upon hearing the news. Her last words were, Elivs, you ain't nothing but a hound dog. Polly Chadwick, Sylvia Dudley and Martha Ransom are all happily married and well on the way to raising a happy family. All the paper planes that Daniel Ricks threw during classes have finally paid off. Yes, Daniel is now one of T.W. A.'s best pilots. Speaking of pilots, Dan's sister is a test driver at Parker Motors. Yes, Grace has finally made her dreams come true. Rae Hassell is head doctor at Duke Hospital. Two of her classmates work as nurses at the hos- pital. They are Janice Becton and Mona House. Allen Windley's most famous paintings are on display in the Louvre in Paris. Donna, the neatest- dressed girl in the class and Winki Willis are now modeling for that new and fast rising company. The Downum-Smith Designing and Modeling Company. Barbara Downum is head designer and Charles Smith is the leading photographer. Jean Chadwick, the Math wizzard of the class, is now a Professor of Calculus at UNC. Jackie Chaplain now owns the Open Grounds Farm and two of his best secretaries are Peggy Ipock and Lydia Conner. Just goes to show you, once a farmer, always a farmer. Horace Swain and Clarence Ipock have made several successful test flights to outer space. Ronald Rollison now has his own fleet of fishing boats, and is about to run Harvey Smith out of business. That gal from Williston finally hooked Hugh Fulcher. And beleive it or not, she made a fisher- man out of him. Milan Buttry has a contract with WNCT. She plays the organ on Sammy Bland's Folk Caravan. Go cat go! Betty Whitehurst is manager of the new Roses 5 10. It is said that she is the best one Beaufort has ever had. The dime store even has things that sell for a dime now. Dorothy Searle is Beaufort High's new band director. Oh no, Mr. Jones hasn't left us. He is now a professional chaperone of high school dances. Gene Small and Julius Dunn, the architects of the class, are designing a new high school. Morehead School is trying its best to get Beaufort students to attend school over there, but no go! Have you ever heard of such a thing?! Rita Mason is fast becoming one of America's best writers. One of her books is on Miss Smith's Must Read list. Frances Johnson is sports editor of the News-Times. The Romeo of the class, Bobby Merrill, is still a bachelor and lives in one of New York's ritziest penthouses. He only has 15 maids to come in every day. Frances Mears, who had a headstart on the rest of the girls, has five little girls all dressed just alike. Oh, and here comes Elbert! He does look a little haggard, but then who wouldn't—with all those mouths to feed. And there comes the newest married member of the class, Daphene Dudley. Oh, I'dbetterstop a minute. Someone important must be coming, everyone's so quiet. Why it's General Lytle Smith and he's weighted down with medals. That executive who arrived in a brand new Cadillac is none other than Dicky Moore. Wonder what happened to his old one? That seems to about cover everything. Oh, and by the way, in case you're wondering, your star reporter is none other than Shirley Pittman. SHIRLEY PITTMAN Latin Banquet What are those slaves doing to your feet, Mr. Tarkington?
