ao 'iciAteA As one walks into a school building for the first time he may not be conscious of the ladder of education he is about to climb. Approaching the ladder, his first step begins with the study of the fundamentals of education-reading, writing, and arith- metic. His steps slowly progress and in doing so they lose the beginner's shakiness. They become steadier and their imprints become deeper. Lingering on the eighth rung, he begins to realize a part of what lies before him. His footsteps lose all their unsureness and gain a feeling of security and hopefulness. The last four rungs of the ladder seem to count the most. The realization of what might become of one faltering step bears on his mind and makes him work hard to keep his pace steady and sure. Q o
