. We Dedicate the 1956 Mainsail to MRS. MARY SUE NOE 0 aO We began our High School Days with her, and she with us by teaching. Our class has battled rough and stormy seas together, but a I ways her firm grasp has reach- ed down, ready and eager to pull us to the top. She has shared our heartaches with sympathy and our happiness with joy. She has understood our troubles and problems and has encouraged, taught, influenced, and loved us; and most of all, she has given us her friend- ship. As a token of our love and gratitude, we, the grad- uating class of 1956, dedicate our yearbook, the MAINSAIL to MRS. MARY SUE NOE. 31 n Jfflcnt oriam Bom Oct. 23, 1936 Died March 20, 1953 Another Senior has lost his life, another name Added to the highway's tolI — Another driver must go on living With a tortured soul. A Senior-Superlative loved by all Industrious, honest, fine- Bumming home from basketball practice. Death far from his mind. The night was clear and lovely, with bright Stars and moon-beams, Jamie was in life's springtime, his heart Full of bright dreams. Me leaves with each Senior a challenge, Obey traffic Laws, stay sober, don't speed. Help save the lives of tomorrow's youth. This is your country's need. Obey-----then make better laws dear Classmates, Is my last appeal- And please keep the icy hands of death From your own steering wheel. Don't let my going mar the joys Of your Graduation Day- And may God always be beside you as You travel life's highway. —Louise Spivey— A memory is etched in each Senior's heart Always to remain- Stunt Night-and the tragic death of Robert Norman Swain. President of our Freshmen Class The leader in our play- We seemed to know so little of death Until that tragic day. His smile was as bright as the sunshine His eyes os blue as the sky- He was such an important part of our class. Nine years at Beaufort High I So often he comes back to us on Memories golden wings- We can see him now, as he would have been In our rememberings. A natural leader, he would surely have Won the Victor's crown- And he would have made a handsome picture In his cap and gown. In the shrine of each heart is an album. We'll take where’er we go- Our high school pages, bright and happy are Warmed by his friendship's glow. In there we have placed our football team- Our band on parade- The cloistered halls of Beaufort High Where our Prayer Group prayed. The Junior and the Senior Prom- Our teacher's hardest test- The memories of our growing up years. Will always be the best. Wonderful-happy-go I den memories, of these Robert was an important part- We place them lovingly and carressingly in the Album of each Senior's heart. Bom Oct. 21, 1937 Died Jan. 17, 1956 -c •vT’ ' g £ faculty Many problems and happy moments have taken place in our lives since first we entered the first grade twelve long years ago. But down the path where our foot- prints trod we were blessed with the wonderful guidance of our principal and under- standing teachers. They helped us over the rough spots, helped us with our many problems, and shared in our happy moments. We hope that the footprints that we leave at dear Beaufort High will be memories to be cherished. Whatever has been achieved by us, we know that we owe much credit to the patience, understanding, thoughtfulness, and kindness to our principal, teachers, parents and friends. '• + I MR. BRUCE E. TARKINGTON Principal PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE lime is so all consuming, and changes re- ality to memories so quickly it seems. Thanks for being the first graduating class it has been my pleasure to have gone all four years with as your principal. My prayer is that you will always enjoy success with understanding and service toward others. U 3 , Facu Vii WXiAy 0 Cfa rt? ul MISS LENA DUNCAN A A.B. Approaching the ladder, his first step begins with the study of the fundamentals of education-reading, writing, and arith- metic. His steps slowly progress and in doing so they lose the beginner's shakiness. They become steadier and their imprints become deeper. Lingering on the eighth rung, he begins to realize a part of what lies before him. His footsteps lose all their unsureness and gain a feeling of security and hopefulness. The last four rungs of the ladder seem to count the most. The realization of what might become of one faltering step bears on his mind and makes him work hard to keep his pace steady and sure. COACH TOM Me QUA ID Coach McQuaid was selected as the coach of the year for THE NEWS-TIMES sponsored All-Conference team, and by stressing fund- amentals and good sportsmanship he carried his team to their first state championship. To us he is second to none. c ctivitlea c-. . - c- The activities and organizations make up a large portion of our school life. To us they seem most important, for we realize they develop initiative, leadership, traditions, and a sense of responsibility. It is through organizations that the students begin to plan their own footprints with only a minimum amount of guidance from the school faculty. We appreciate the opportunities we have and shall strive to earn the privileges given us to partic- ipate in the clubs and organizations at Beaufort High School. Each year of High School we have boasted a member of our class as Miss Seadog. She has reigned as Homecoming Queen and participated in the band performances during football season. We feel honored to have been represented by such good-looking girls. Our High School days have been filled with parties, dances, banquets and get-togethers. These have left footprints on our school grounds and in Our Memories. °o Our Miss Sea Dogs JEAN PITTMAN 1956 JOYCE CHADWICK Each year since the graduating class of '56 has been in high school, it has honor- 1955 ed a class member by supporting her in the Miss Seadog campaign.
