Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1954 volume:

VM Foreword We, the Class of ’54, enter the final months of our twelve years at Beaufort High, finding that the thought of leaving is difficult to face. There have been times when we wished that our high school education was over... and yet now that we are faced with that situ- ation we are truly sorry. The memories, friendships, and experiences we have shared during these years have made an impression on us that we will carry the remainder of our lives. It is our hope that this edition of the MAINSAIL will help you to recall all the things which make up what we call school life. We refer to pep rallies, football games, final exams, chapel programs, Junior-Senior Banquets, report cards, dances, holidays, and so many phases of our journey through Beaufort High. With every wish for your continued success in life we present to you ... the MAINSAIL. Whenever we needed a friend or advisor, she was there willing to help us. She was never too busy to lend a sympathetic ear to our troubles, or help us to solve our problems. She opened to us a wider field of learning and showed us the importance of exploring deeper into the realms of nature and learning. As an expression of our love and gratitude to one who has been so kind and dear to each of us, we, the Seniors of '54, dedicate this, our annual, to Mrs. Mildred Lawrence. Principal’s Message - V — ’ ''W :;v r, -'•T1 • % I feel this has been a year of many accomplishments for our school. The credit goes to the student body, interested patrons of our school and our excellent teachers. I wish to thank everyone for the part he has had individually and col- lectively in raising our school to greater heights in its effort to serve the communities in die district. There are yet many things to be done, but I feel sure that since we are resolved to give our children the best in- struction available we will continue to work, and thus climb to even greater heights as a school and community. ■ • . v • ■ .• ft 'Aw'S'.-i. 1 ---. , ....... .--'V. • .... w — • . . . , ■ V.:;: . « '- - -.4 . ow. ■?. • S (0 Ch fl 0 (3 d fl .s « Faculty MISS LENA DUNCAN MISS GLADYS CHADWICK MRS. DARLENE MATTHEWS WILLIS Beta Club 3,4; FHA 1,2; District Class History In 1949, seventy-five Freshmen walked proudly down the halls of Beaufort High School. It wasn't until we began changing classes that we realized we were completely lost. With the help of our homeroom teachers, Mrs. Salter and Mrs. Beveridge, and the push and pull of upper classmen, we finally found our places and settled down. Before the year was over, we were in many activities of the school, with F.H. A., Glee Club and Banquet waiters and waitress serving as our main interests. None of us will ever forget the supper we served the Seniors at State Park. Many times we will wish we were back there again eating ail that chicken we had left over. In 1950, we came back in full force as Sophomores. This was the year we tried out our bossy words on the poor Freshmen. Under the kind hands of Mrs. Lawrence and Miss Thompson, we grew to be a very outstanding class, for this was the year we discovered that our classmates were painters, speakers, actors, athletes and leaders in activities. The trip and wiener roast for the Seniors at Flanders Beach, we will never forget. This was the time we beat the highly superior Seniors in a sack race. Our Junior year found us full of dreams for the banquet. Mrs. Salter was back with us, and with her came a helping hand, Mrs. Willis. Selling magazine subscriptions and sponsoring dances were our biggest undertakings that year. Ail our work was not in vain, for we had a Mexican Banquet that far surpassed any other before us. After much hard study, we were ready to be- come hard-boiled Seniors. There were only thirty-eight of us Seniors when we proudly walked in the front door and through the balcony. Miss Duncan and Miss Chadwick greeted us and under their guidance, we soon set to work. This was the year that was full of hard work mixed with activities, for now we were the leaders in our school. Some of us were preparing ourselves for college, others for local jobs, and many for marriage. Some big events during our Senior year were the Christmas Party, the best annual yet, the arrival of rings, the big trip to Washington, and last, but not least, our graduation exercises. It was hard to leave our friends for we knew that we would be scattered to all parts of the world, but we realized that we had to say good-by and go out on our own. We are hoping that someday we will meet again in the halls of Beaufort High School. Anita Copeland Historian Prophecy of Class of ’54 Here it is 1964, a whole decade since I have seen any of my classmates of the class of '54. I have been out of the States since the fall after we graduated. I have often wondered during this time what be- came of all them. If I could only meet just one of my ole classmates, maybe I could find out how some of them are making out in this big wide world. Guess I had better stop dreaming and get on my plane before I miss it. As I boarded the plane and settled down in my seat, an attractive young lady came to fasten me in. Her face seemed familiar. Grace! Yes, this attractive stewardess was none other than Grace Whitehurst, an old classmate. My dreaming wasn't in vain after all. Well, you can imagine what went on during my flight--yes, you have guessed it! Grace and I talked about our classmates of '54. She informed me that she had just returned from a trip home, so her infor- mation was fresh off the wires. Bobby Davis is now Coach of the Notre Dame Football Team, with Kerry Lewis as his Assistant Coach. While we are on the subject of sports, Grace said that Colleen Guthrie was Coach of the Beaufort Girls' Basketball Team. Her team has a record of no losses for three years. Also, Jimmy Willis has recently joined the world renown Globe Trotters. Judy Mason and Bobbie Dennis are dancers of the Ziegfield Follies in New York. Kay Willis and Doris Temple are happily married and have a set of twins each. Jessie Wilkins is Carteret County's new Home Agent. It is rumored that she is the best one they have had for years. Herb Prytherch is Head Doctor at the new hospital at Cedar Island. On his very dependable Nurses Staff are Phyllis Pake and Shirley Dudley. Danny Bates is now a Professor of English at the University of North Carolina. He was always good in English back in school. Street Wetherington, the fisherman of our class, is now the captain of a fleet of menhaden boats and half owner of the Beaufort Fisheries. Barbara Harris, after years of hard practicing, has become a star concert pianist; and Patsy Daniels is a sensational new opera star, now touring Europe. An ultra-modern new movie theater has just been built in Morehead City under the management of Connie Sabiston. The two architects who designed the theater were Elzie Tosto and Curtis Josey. Joyce Willis and Inez Woodard, the best looking girls of our class, are now modeling for the Robinson Designing and Modeling Company in New York. Jane Robinson is head designer. Anita Copeland and Hugh Mason are the Sports Editors of the Greensboro Daily. They are doing a fine job from what I hear. Malcolm Sabiston is the new owner of the Jefferson Hotel, and his wife, the former Marie Robinson, is dietitian. Some of Donald Fulcher's greatest paintings are on display in the Louvre in Paris. It has been rumored that Wayne King is fast becoming radio and television's most popular star. It seems that he was very good at that back in his school days. Billy Hudgins and George Lewis, two eminent scientists, have just completed their fifth successful flight to the moon. Quite a place, isn't it, boys? Walker Moore has completed his ministry schooling and is now one of North Carolina's best preachers. His wife, the former Edna Young, is an excellent Sunday School teacher. Earl Noe, Principal of Beaufort High School, has on his very dependable staff, Janice Keller and Frances Fulcher. Janice is head of the Commercial Department and Frances is the head of the French Department. Earl says they are two of his best teachers. Gerald Taylor and Sue Gibbs have teamed up and recently added three hundred acres to their one thousand acre farm down in the Deep South. They were good help on the farm as kids. Sally Taylor is the new owner of Taylor's Community Hall. She really has some business. Emma Perry entered the missionary field. She is the head of her YMCA group in Asia. Grace has to leave now, however, she reminds me that she forgot to mention that the pilot of the plane is our own Freddie Merrill. Gracious, if the Class of 54 has accomplished this much in its first ten years out of school, there will be no stopping its progress in the years to come! Sadie L. Harris Last Will and Testament ARTICLE I We, the Senior Class of '54, being of weak bodies and cracked minds, leave this, our last will and testa- ment as an expression of our sorrow in graduating. Juniors At last we have left behind the name of Freshmen, and Sophomores, and have become the proud Juniors of ’54. We think our class is quite special since we boast ten oasketball players, seven football players, seven band members, two cheerleaders, two bus drivers, and many members in all school clubs. We have dreamed of our Junior year for a long time and now at last our dreams have been realized. We, the Juniors, are looking forward to April 30th, our banquet night with great anticipation. Since we have the splendid advisors, Mrs. Thomas Noe and Mrs. Wren Lawrence, our dreams of attainment will we are sure our banquet will be a success and be realized. Freshmen At last we have reached high school. We have had all the teasing anyone can give us by calling us little Freshmen. However, we have been looking forward to high school for a long time and we did-not allow a little teasing to darken our many pleasant hours. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so our class members are liberally sprinkled through the many clubs and athletic teams of Beaufort High. We hope to be able, during the remainder of our stay at Beaufort High, to live up to the fine records of the classes which have preceded us. Street Wetherington----------------------President Jimmy Wheatly-----------------------Vice President Nina Faye Kirk---------------------------Secretary Inez Woodard-----------------------------Treasurer The Prayer Group was founded in March 1953 by the Methodist Youth Fellowship. The first leader of this interdenominational group was Ann Noe. The Purpose of the Prayer Group is to give the opportunity of a daily devotion to all high school students and to bring about improvements in the school through Christian ideals. As projects for the 1953-1954 school year the group has prepared devotions for assemblies; supported the honor system; given a chapel program on the honor system; supported a campaign against the harmful effects of alcohol; presented an Easter program; and has made improvements around the school. The average attendance is sixty-six. “Pinyer tyioup, Jimmy Wheatly - - Nina Faye Kirk - - Patsy Daniels----- Barbara Harris----- Rae Frances Hassell ------------President -------Vice President ------------Secretary -------Song Leader Assistant Song Leader Beta Club The Beta Club, under the leadership of Mrs. Anne Salter, has done a wonderful job this year.
