This year the Junior Class really treated the Seniors to a marvelous Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom. The theme, Sayonara, was carried out in every detail. The gym was gaily decorated with Japanese lanterns and featured the new effect of the ceiling's being lowered. The decorations also featured Japanese Cherry Tree centerpieces as well as a Japanese scene backdrop. The seniors, juniors, teachers, and friends were entertained by the Triple Trio, dressed in typical Japanese costumes and by the Mixed Ensemble who sang Japanese Sandman. The main speaker of the evening was James King who spoke on Heights to Climb, Steve Brott was the toastmaster of the event, and Alan Fiala offered the invocation. Ray Goodenough welcomed the sen- iors, and Bob Lockwood, senior class president gave the response. After the program the students and their friends enjoyed an evening of dancing. The teachers stand solemnly as the graduating seniors march into the auditorium. This is the beginning of the end for the Senior Class as they file into their places at graduation. Linda Hogeland and Helen Schmierer were the two speakers at gradua- tion. Linda's speech, A Caution to Everybody, dealt with the ideas presented in an Ogden Nash poem, She admonished the Class of 1959 to always be inquisitive and to always be ready and willing to learn. The Challenge of Giving, presented by Helen, was concerned with the new responsibilities that the Class of 1959 gets as they now graduate. She said that it is now our chance to give to others the benefits that we have previously received. One of the most important events in the graduation ceremonies was the special recognition given to Miss Mary Sturmer, who is leaving the system this year. She was presented a dozen roses by Hale McCown who spoke in behalf of all of Miss Sturmer's students, past and present. Many scholarships and honors were bestowed at graduation and above is Steve Lovell shown getting his scholarship.
