Oh, what memories! But memories aren't the only things collected. One must list, also, the friendships formed, the knowledge acquired, the leadership developed, and the responsibilities accepted. There will be many times when you will use the training you have received, and you will recall with fond memories your sojourn at Senior High. We will remember the wonderful years at B.H.S., climaxed by editing this 1958 Hornesteader. Thank you advisors, staff members, and artists, Jerry Shaffer and Lawauna Hillers, for it was your co-operation and sincere efforts which made this book possible. Sincerity is a necessary quality for the success of any endeavor. In fact, all the qualities which we have acquired here in Senior High are necessary in the training of alert citizens. You are those citizens--the leaders of tomorrow. And to you, the students of B.H.S., we humbly and gratefully dedicate this book. Working toward even higher goals, the Student Council has carried out many service projects through- out the year. The group raised enough money this year to sponsor another exchange student in 1959. This was accomplished by selling Shares of Democracy, working concessions at athletic events and by enlisting the aid of outside organizations. A monthly calendar, listing all athletic events and social activities, was published by this group. The council members served as ushers for the Senior Open House, and working with Mr. Genzlinger, the Stu- dent Council has provided an opportunity for noontime activity by scheduling and supervising volleyball games. Also, on Friday noon's this group planned sock hop in the gym. A benefit Reserve -Freshman game was planned by the council. This group also held a Winter Won- derland dance December 14 in the Cafeteria, decorated in blue and white with a snowman as the main attraction. Thirteen members of the council spent two days at McCook at the State Student Council Convention. Besides learning many ways of building a better council, the members were entertained and enjoyed a pleasant trip. STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBLRS, FIRST: J. Everett, B. Lammel, K. Grueber, D. Byars, B. This is the second consecutive year that the Student Council of Beatrice Senior High and various service clubs in this city have sponsored a foreign student. The senior class was fortunate to have pretty, vivacious Ulka Urtan from Istanbul, Turkey among its members. Ulka arrived during the last week of August and settled down with her new parents, and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Williams. She also gained a new sister, Judy, who helped her become ac- quainted with the school and students. At first differences between her school in Istanbul and Beatrice High School bewildered Ulka. Particularly since her school there consisted of all girls who wore identical uniforms. She enjoyed the opportunity of choosing her own subjects and was happy there were not as many required. When asked what she thought of BHS, Ulka replied, l think the kids are friendly, the classes are difficult, and the Pep rallies are exciting since we don't have anything like them in Istanbul. Seventeen year old Ulka's stay in Beatrice ended the last week of June followed by a bus tour of the United States, after which , she returned home. Alan Fiala, Ray Goodenough, Linda Hogeland, Kayla Grueber, Kathy Weston, and Denny Byars were elected as representatives at large. Beatrice claims the honor of being one among the first schools to organize a Key Club in the Iowa-Nebraska district. This worthwhile organization is a service club sponsored by the Kiwanians. Some of the projects of the group so far this year were: ticket sales to the Fox theater, school Valentines Dance, a tar in the homecoming parade and a candy sale. This year there was a formal organization ofthe Key Clubs of the Nebr.-Iowa district. Two Beatrice members were selected as interstate officers. They are Denny Byars and Ladd Hubka. The purpose of the club is to promote an understanding of science through an atmosphere of learning and good fellowship. Many interesting and informative projects, such as testing the efficiency of fuels in gasoline motors, and making rayon fibers, have made belonging to this organization an interest- ing and worthwhile activity. T 137 The backbone of our yearbook and school paper were the photographers, Bill Waddell and Fred Nichols. These fellows did their best to carry out the assignments of editors. Although it was very demanding at times, they pushed their activities aside to fulfill their duties. Bill is a junior with his second year of experience in this field. His good nature gives that needed pep when things are dull. His valuable knowledge gained thus far should rate him tops in the future. Fred, a senior, became interested in photography last year and became a trusty assistant. He helps by taking pictures at games and other functions and gave up his library period to further the cause. His infectious personality adds spice and variety to the Iournalsim department. These two fellows give complete satisfaction. W--Q-vm-Q--s-gn,.,,3.,.. The sales weeks for Homesteaders were excellent ones from the view of the editors. A record number of 410 books was sold during their campaign. A dinner was held in the cafeteria to start off sales- week, with the staff getting their assignments from the editors. This assignment was stated in one word --SELL! To encourage selling, posters displaying the Sput- nik theme were hung in the hall, a play showing Edward R. Squirrel's Person to Person was giveng and various songs and skits echoed through the building. Two outstanding money raising projects were en- joyed during the year--a dance held in the cafeteria and concessions at the Omaha Westside basketball game. By the hard work of every one of the staff mem- bers, a prodigious and prolific sales campaign was had for the 1958 HOMESTEADER. The production of the 1958 HOMESTEADER was under the direction of the all-girl Board as follows: Eileen Blakely, Editor in Chiefg Marian Kitzelman Business Managerp Mary Swartz, Class Editorg and Bev Hautzenroder, Feature Editor. They carefully selected the members of the staff which consists of 43 members. Besides promoting sales the staff helps with layouts, ideas, and money raising projects. Photography Club Shutterbugs Every other Tuesday night at 7:30, the shutterbug fans of BHS gather around their sponsor, Mr. Cotting- ham, to learn more about the fascinating subject of photography. Plenty of experience plus examples of good and bad photography help to create a good at- mosphere of fun and learning. The club of 15 regular members is well organized under president Bill Waddel, vice president Roger Meisenbach, and secretary-treasurer Eileen Blakely. Eagerness seems to be the unwritten motto upheld by all the members as is shown by the rapid chang- ing population of the darkroom. Techniques learned this year were developing film, making reprints, enlarging photos, making Christmas cards and taking portraits. Photography is fun and entertaining when the principals and methods that occur in the developing stages are fully understood by studying the camera itself. The club was enthusiastic and learned much with the help of the school's modern and well equipped facilities. --0 415' , . f Ji' 1 : Y 3 , :,,,M, M X iii Y' ., 6 E0 Q, Qc V, '43 x 5 ' 4 A Q vw K MV 1,-m r 2 w -, M,,4a 9, ,f A + wa.
