All of the techniques of good housekeeping must be exercised hy the custodians. Keeping the halls and rooms neat and clean is a major task, as is the seasonal job of precise placing of containers at strategic spots during a rain storm. The ladies of the cafeteria are faced with the imposing task of preparing for the students and faculty, meals which are both appetizing and nourishing. This they do with amazing facility and with a minimum of reward. To the members of these two staffs congratulations should be given and an couragmg word that their work in ke eping BHS running smoothly and efficiently 1 truly appreciated Mrs Madeline Granc er CAFETERIA STAFF Mrs Elsie Vanderhook Mrs Mildred Albers Mrs Ruth Scoggins, Mrs Delores Lottman and Mrs Vera Koch Cafeteria Director 4 lu , en- W ' 1 i X : . As a result of houm of hard work by enthusiastic students, the BHS chapter of the Fu- ture Farmers of America, under the watchful eye of Mr. Busboom, received out- standing recognition during the 1956-57 school year. At the annual state FFA convention, Beatrice was rated as one of the two Best Cha - P ters in Nebraska. Having received this honor, our chapter will compete for na- tional recognition. More honors were bestowed upon our members when Dale Linsenmeyer was elected Vice-President of the Nebraska Future Farmers of America and four of our seniors received State Farmer Degrees at the state convention. These outstanding far- mers are Mark Claassen, Dale Linsenmeyer, Dean Spillcer, and Robert Wiebe. Seven members displayed musical talent the past year. Keith Pelton played in the state band and the FFA Quartet sang at the state convention. Dean Spil.ker sang with the National FFA Chorus at the National Convention. FALLS CITY In the season's opener, the Orangemen scored early in the game and then opened their defenses for a second quarter Falls City touchdown. The second half proved to be a stalemate of fumbles and punts with the final score reading a 6-6 tie. BEATRICE VS. PLATTSMOUTH Missed PAT's were the Orangemen's downfall in a Twin-Rivers Conference tilt at Plattsmouth. Wayne Wit scored both Beatrice touchdowns in the 13-12 loss, BEATRICE VS. LINCOLN SOUTHEAST Routing Lincoln Southeast, 37-0, Beatrice turned in the first victory of the year. Sifting through the Knights' defenses to score were Wit, Kennedy, Stindt, and Lockwood. Another goal was scored by Morgan on a pass from Oehm. BEATRICE VS. LINCOLN NORTHEAST Another victory was added to the record when the Orangemen trounced Lincoln Northeast, 27 -13. Led by Wit and Stindt, Beatrice avenged the tie suffered in the hands of the Rockets last year. BEATRICE VS. NEBRASKA CITY Insuring a joyous Homecoming, the Orangemen defeated the Pioneers, 21-12. Bottling up Nebraska City's speedy half-backs, Beatrice's defensive team was the deciding factor in the victory. BEATRICE VS. FAIRBURY Suffering a dual conference defeat in the hands of Fairbury, 6-0, the Beatrice gridiron machine couldn't seem to get started until it was too late, BEATRICE VS. FREMONT The Orange and Black team took another loss on the chin as the highly touted Fremont Tigers mauled them, 20-7. BEATRICE VS. HASTINGS The Orangemen lost another Mid -East Conference tilt when Hastings won a frigid, windy outing, 19-7. This loss placed Beatrice in the third berth in this conference. BEATRICE VS. CRETE In the season's grand finale, Beatrice gained sweet revenge for last season's lone loss by stopping the Cardinals, 18-13. The victory, marked by several thrilling long runs, gave the 1956 Beatrice football squad a record of four wins, four losses, and one tie. 81 Sludcnl Manager -se Kenny VVhitC , I IX In x J i Rodney Bartcls ' Rodney Schuetlc Larry Barlcls hen AICLIUSIIIIXI Enscmg Nkfrighn Dun Cookus 14,4 .., Larry Morgan C ary Ophm Don Dah 'Q 'f 3 N NIJIXIIJII Iialdlm m Kd T N 2 X, I '1'-MQW fr fs Xx f x SN yy i Z QP' 1 . FIRST ROW: Gage, Madison, Wit, B. Hohn, and Broadbooks. SECOND ROW: I-lar-tog, L. Morgan, L. Bartels, Buettgenbach, Grell, B. Lockwood, and M. Oldfather. Z a Coach Darrel Genzlinger's basketball squad, led by Larry Bartels, Bob Buettgenbach, Larry Hartog, Larry Morgan, and Wayne Wit, compiled a '7-10 season record. Placing high in both conferences, the Beatrice Orange- men experienced a roundball session which certainly had its moments of both elation and dejection. The Orangemen opened their season, winning a close decision from Lincoln Southeast. After dropping a tilt to Marysville, the Orange and Black cagemen slipped by Seward, 66-52, Returning to action from Christmas vacation, Beatrice lost to highly rated Fremont but defeated Falls City, 59-41. After losing to another rated team, Grand Island, the Orangemen dropped games to Omaha Westside and Columbus. Highlighting the season was Beatrice's victory over touted Lincoln High, 51 -41. The Links were held to only eight field goals by the aggressive Orange and Black defense. Victory and defeat alternated the rest of the season, creating excitement for the fans and causing gray hairs for Coach Genzlinger. The Orangemen nipped Crete in a hard fought fray but lost the following game to Lincoln Northeast. On a weekend outing the Beatrice cagemen defeated York but lost to a strong Hastings team, 49-38. Again filling the victor's role, Beatrice edged arch- rival, Fairbury, in a nip-and -tuck battle, 50 -46. The regular season was ended in a repeat performance from last year, a heart-breaking 51-50 loss to Nebraska City. In the district tournament, the Orangemen were far off stride and dropped the final contest to Lincoln Northeast. I I K ,, .-.5 Na- gli., Af' f FW by 4 ' . 1 my Q x . gr' Y I .iv Q ,fry if .W .... The 1957 Beatrice Orangeman squad, pooling talent, effort, and determination, completed the most successful track and field season in many years, The Orangemen received their first trophy of the year by placing second to Hastings in the 22 -team field at the Central Nebraska Invitational at Hastings College, April 14. On April 17, the squad avenged the earlier loss to Hastings by edging the Tigers, 73 112 to 69 1!2, in the Mid -East Conference title contest held at Nebraska Wesleyan College. Emerging as the first team to unseat Falls City from the Twin Rivers Conference thin-clad top berth, Beatrice added this championship and also secured the conference all-s ports traveling trophy for their collection on April 25, at Falls City. Continuing their winning ways, the Orange and Black athletes won the first district crown in many years by Up and Over. eking out a win over Lincoln High, '70 -68, The Orangemen then entered the State Meet as the underdog , picked to place no higher than third or fourth. But to everyone's surprise, the Jones Boys' repeated as Class A Champions, again edging Scottsbluff for the crown. Larry Fisher, Gold Medal weight-man from last year, heaved the shot 57' 4 3!4 for a new State Record. Wayne Wit jumped 22' 1!2 to win Gold Medal broad jump. Larry Bartels won the Class A high hurdles while Bob Hohn placed second in the Class A low barriers. Defeating Lincoln High in a duel meet and copping top honors in a triangular meet with Seward and South- east were other victories for the squad. Further achieve- ments of the group were the naming of Coach Jones as Lincoln Journal-Star Coach-of-the -Year and the breaking of five BHS records. Redmond, L. Bartels, and L.
