The fact that he filed first, and after the law had been in effect only five minutes, was not the result of a plan but accidental. Daniel Freeman was a native of Ohio and was born April 26, 1826. When he was possession. ' but ten years of age, the family moved to Illinois, where he grew to manhood. About the time of the Civil war he came into government service, and while thus engaged travelled a great deal throughout the West and southwest, becoming familiar with the territory. He chose the West for his permanent home before the close of the war. In July, 1862, Mr. Freeman selected a spot along Cub Creek, in Gage County, Ne- braska, and took a squatter's right on that land. This expired in December and on the last day of the year Mr. Freeman went to Brownville, Nebraska, for the purpose of filing a homestead application before reporting to the army. At a ball held that eve- ning in the hotel, Mr. Freeman met the clerk of the land office, who chanced to men- tion that since the following day was a holiday, the office would be closed. The clerk was an accommodating man and when Mr. Freeman explained that he was under orders to report to an army post on January 2, he made arrangements to file the papers im- mediately after twelve o'clock. So it happened that the first settler to file under the Homestead Act, which provided free homes for free men, was named Freeman. This first homestead lies four miles west of Beatrice, along Cub Creek, which is bordered by abundant timber. The original homestead included 160 acres and its boun- daries are still the same. Daniel Freeman lived on his homstead until his death in 1908. Mrs. Freeman occupied it until 1927 when she moved to Beatrice, where she still resides. The homestead is still in the hands of the family, who greatly prize its The spot is now marked by a tablet upon a stone from the old state capitol and X e f the grave of the first homesteader is appropriately honored by a marker. Vile are laying down Our books to say goodbye, And we feel regret, indeed, That the old school we must leave, But it 's boys and girls like us The old world needs. NVe have spent four years 'With teachers kind and true, For our boys we've yelled Out on the bleachers, too. Every happy, care-free day We will cherish, yes, for aye, And we never will forget Our school days free. What the future holds For us, We do not know. As each year unfolds New duties we will know. May we ever prove the worth Of the best old school on earth, And be proud to say, I'm from Beatrice High. --Jennie Burgess. CLASS SONG CTune: End of a Perfect Day j I love my dear old Beatrice High And I know my love is returned. But my heart ever turns and my soul ever yearns For the one I'll love till I die. H. S. rang' true. In the last two games of the season, the true color of Coach Garrett's gridmen came out and the B. H. S. football war- riors fought ganiely to tie games with Fremont and Hastings. The driving power displayed on that first march across the field to score the first touchdown of the season, brought the fans to their feet. That the team had real quality is shown by the fact, that, in spite of losing games, three members' of the team were honored by state newspapers and coaches by being given positions on all-state and all mid-state teams. Those players were Captain Dale Mcillanahan, Max Ramsey and Mel Smith. Football letters were awarded to Captain Dale McClanahan, Max Ramsey, Mel Smith, XVard Greenlee, Herman Siefkes, Harold XVittulski, VVade Traylor, Winfield Beck, John Denton, Martin Nichols, llenry Menke, Loran Breese, Robert Nelson, Orville Coul- ter, Dale Coonley. r N fi nf . 35 HOMESTERDER 36 HOMESTERDER 37 L-lJ'1111111EsTE1111ER T111' IIUNY: 1111111 S11i111-11, Her1111111 S11-flies, t'111'11y 1'1111s11, P11111111 IG. 1'. l1i:g'i1111111l111111 11111- l11L'l'12l11Zl1l2l1l. The home room meet, held April 10 and 11, brought forth more Very promising material. This year, as in other years, Coach Garrett has developed some ex- cellent relay teams in the 440, 880, mile and mile medley classes. These teams, together with the rest of the track and field events, are sure to bring the Beatrice High school its usual share of glory. The leading point winner for Beatrice will undoubtedly be Herman Siefkes, a two-letter track man and the outstanding performer in the sprints and distance runs this year as well as last. The schedule is as follows: April 10-11: Home room and inter-class meet. April 20: Gage County meet at NVymore. April 21: Kansas Relays at Lawrence. April 28: Mid-state track and field meet at Beatrice. May 4: Southeastern Nebraska track and field meet at Beatrice. May 11-12: State meet at Lincoln.
