In our age, the age of turmoil, confusion, and anxiety, one must be aware and become involved. Today's youth and older generations express themselves in many ways: riots, sit-ins, speeches, editorials, etc. More often than not the speeches and editorials are ignored and the protests and anti-establishment movements result in lawlessness and rash police action. Why can’t these protests and peaceful movements for liberal changes be understood by all generations? As editor I intend to keep a liberal mind concerning the contents of the annual, and I challenge you to examine the material accordingly. In former years I feel Bearden students have been less aware of current problems and situations in our country. However, this year there is a handful of students who are helping their fellow students to realize that there is a world beyond the Knoxville city limits. We are living in an economically impoverished area where funds are scarce for education. We may think this lack of educational resources is outweighed by the fact that Bearden is one of the highest-rated schools in Tennessee. But when our state has one of the poorest ratings in education in the nation, how do Bearden High School students compare with students from top-ranked states? Will you be able to enter the career of your choice? Yes. The opportunity for self-expression and higher education is available at Bearden if one chooses to become involved. This year the Class of '69 is fast becoming the most aware and most involved class Bearden High School has ever had. My role in this change consists of recording the separate stories of concern, involvement, and expression truthfully and completely. David Anderson, Editor
