ECHO OF 1953P u I ft i I « J iy THE STUDENTS of BEARDEN HIGH SCHOOL Knoxville, TennesseeCLASS HISTORY Twelve years ago next September, we, a group of excited boys and girls, entered Bearden School to begin our formal education. Two groups were formed; one remaining in the main building, and the other using as a classroom the "Little White House," a dwelling house that was purchased by the school to take care of the overflow in enrollment. This first year at Bearden was very important to us because we began to form lasting friendships. Many have come and many have gone away, but perhaps the ones that best remember this part of our history are the fifteen charter members of this graduating class. They are Mary Jo Brooks, Peggy Clabough, Mary Ann Hagler, John Hays, Mamie Gary Henegar, Anne Morgan Iron, Thelma Johnson, Gilda Milani, Carroll McGinnis, Kenneth Parker, Susan Rose, Margaret Sanders, Ann Sutton, Sonny Towle, and Wanda Flanigan Underwood. The next six years passed rapidly, because the war had caused a shortage of building materials, we spent most of this time in dilapidated barracks. Here we worked hard to get a good foundation for high school. As we grew older, we became interested in sports and in the social activities of the school. Since we were in need of a new high school building, we became concerned about the future of Bearden. A new building became the hope of every boy and girl in our class. Upon returning in the fall, we were happy to see that construction of a new building was under way. All during this year, we anxiously watched the progress that was being made. We saw a beautiful auditorium erected on the spot where the "Little White House" once stood. Several times after the building began to take form, we walked through the halls admiring the unfinished classrooms. Yes, this was to be the future Bearden High School. As a class of happy freshmen, we entered the new building in September, 1949. Under the leadership of Miss Ellison and Mr. Parker we organized our class by electing the following officers: President, Bobby Underwood; vice-president, John Hays; secretary, Sue Christopher; treasurer, Emily Turner; and social chairman, Nancy Burleson. Class favorites were Sue Christopher and Bobby Underwood. We felt honored when Sue Christopher, a freshman, was selected Carnival Queen. Mrs. Cates and Mr. Bridges were our guides through the sophomore year. Class officers were president, John Hays; vice-president, Emily Turner; secretary, Sue Christopher; treasurer, Dorothy Ann Huskey; and social chairman, Asher Helton. Our favorites were Geraldine Rooker and Bobby Underwood. Anne Morgan Iron was the second member of the class to be selected Carnival Queen. In our junior year, Mrs. Aslinger, Mr. Davidson, and Mr. Stephenson were our sponsors. Our officers were president, John Hays; vice-president, Richard Waters; secretary, Ronny Simpson; treasurer, Emily Turner; and social chairman, Wanda Flanigan Underwood. The senior class officers are president, Johnny Hays; vice-president, Wanda Flanigan Underwood; secretary, Betty Lonas; treasurer, Harold Knott; and social chairmen, Madeline Pratt and Bobby Underwood. Mrs. Lowry, Mrs. Reynolds, and Mrs. Clark were our sponsors. In this year, we particilated in more activities than in previous years. Perhaps the greatest of these was the trip that the class made to New Orleans. To raise money for this event, we sponsored bake sales, school dances, a talent show, and other money-raising projects. Yes, we, the senior class, have made history at Bearden. Some of us will continue our formal education; others will not, but whatever course we choose to follow, we shall find adventure awaiting us. May these years be ones of lasting memory and happiness to all of us. Wanda Flanigan UnderwoodMR. W. R. TURNER PRINCIPALMrs. Ival Aslingcr Math and Bible Mr. W. L. To meet my needs the school of my choice had to offer superior business training and at the same time be inexpensive. After talking to my friends and Mr. Ramsey, Educational Director of Knoxville Business College, I enrolled in this school. Besides offering the regular business courses, the school is well-known throughout the city for its course in Public Speaking, the only one of its kind offered in Knoxville business schools. The courteous teachers and friendly students make studying at Knoxville Business College a real pleasure. Write, phone or come to see us for information 209 W.
